Review Wok On In - Christchurch

“Kopitiam” expectations exceeded. Would like to point out how clean the customer area is. Went to try out the watanhor and it did not disappoint. Had it with the in-house complimentary chili. Tasted garlic, ginger & vinegar in the chili mix. Added extra “kick” to the flat noodle dish. Have a no-brainer 5star, because for the price of $15.50, it was really aplenty one could ask for. Strictly eftpos or cash only. At times when eftpos machine is out, bank transfer is possible. Please take note, especially tourists. Credit/debit card / paywave are not available options.

Cosy restaurant with small space and kitchen, so adjust your expectation accordingly. Good value, fast service and authentic Malaysia food. We like the nasi lemak, hokkien mee, char kway teau and char bee hoon.

First time trying at this resturant, they were so busy! 🤗 Everything was great, big portions and reasonable prices for each of them. Definitely will go back again👏

Incredible place. Authentic through and through. Great genuine service - amazing food. Like just simply fantastic. Rate this place an 12/10. So good we have eaten here multiple times on a 1 week holiday to Chch.

A unique traditional meal of street food. Is worth the visit if you craving for asian foods or just a big meal. The portion are generous and the the interior are plaster with Penang street are wallpaper. It is self service and cash only. Closed on Monday. Open during lunch and dinner, shop closed in between.

Genuinely the best, most genuine Malaysian food you’ll find in Christchurch. So awesome having a bit of home so far away from home. Highly recommend dining in as some dishes are best for it. Takeaway is still great but you might need to check with staff with what you pick. To have meals like this at their prices also puts keeps regular customers happy. Very rare to find a gem like this with meals for around $16 in 2023. - Happy local

Delicious, fast and well priced! Busy at lunch time, but with good reason. Can't wait to go back and try all the amazing looking dishes!

As a Asian I can tell you right now, this is what we call trandation asian food taste. The fried noodles fried rice absolute must try item. Dry enough not like some "chinese"restaurants their fried rice are wet. If you would like to try some really good and good value asian food. Here is your first choice!

This is a lovely malaysian retaurant. They serve you some chinese tea to star. The staff were very courteous. Its a nice and small restaurant. We had a tomyum soup and wonton soup. It was very good. I enjoyed them. Then chakwetiyav was nice too. I would definitely recommend this place. The price is very reasonable 12 dollars every thing on menu and 6 dollars for the soup.

Came here first time with my son. The Wonton Noodle Soup was so delicious. Generous portions of wontons. Tasty noodles. Later visited by myself for the second time. I will come again for sure because l cannot find better wonton noodle soup anywhere else. Deeply impressed!

I love the prawn noodle soup, but everything looks fantastic and tastes authentic. Shop always full of discerning people. Takeaways also available so posting menu. I'll definitely be back.

The sambal fried rice is a 5 star dish on its own 🔥 a must try spot if your ever in chc

Always have had a great experience here for many years, generous large portions at an affordable price and the Malaysian flavours are on point. Service is super quick. Place speaks for itself as it is usually full and you may need to wait for a seat. Highly recommend!

We ordered Lor Mee and Nasi Lemak. I must say lor mee is pretty authentic, better if they have had added a little more minced garlic to give that kick. The Nasi Lemak is a disappointment. The coconut aroma is lacking in the rice which is essential in Nasi lemak. We will be back to try the black vinegar trotter soup and assam bee hoon soup that were not available when we patronised the shop.

It is a small place but the food and service are both amazing. Totally worth going to. I would definitely recommend it. A+++

Always be the place to go when we craving for authentic Malaysian flavours, they never stingy on ingredients, affordable price with huge portion to be shared, plenty of options and many can be made vegetarian, free chinese tea available.

Awesome fresh food. Eat here at least once a week. Friendly, fast, fresh and affordable.
Book ahead if a large group. Roti and curry sauce is my favourite. Open for lunch most days.

Quick and cheep food, but to be honest my meal was very bland, tasted like powdered 2min noodle soup as it had no depth of flavour. Unfortunately I won’t be back

The food itself was tasty and cooked/ready in under ten minutes. Though, I definitely would have appreciated better serving sizes. We got ours takeaway and the sweet and sour pork didn’t even reach halfway up the container. Unfortunately we were also overcharged which is frustrating.
They are good for a quick weekend takeaway meal though wont go back due to the small serving sizes.

Good portion sizes, wontons were delicious, wish there was more sweet and sour sauce tho!! I got the ginger chicken with stir fried Veges and rice. It was very bland and didn’t taste like ginger at all! Veges were kinda gross too, was lots of cabbage! I probably wouldn’t go there again but it wasn’t bad overall.

Been to Wok on Inn, on multiple occasions. Definitely a cheap eat place. Inside the restaurant is small and gets loud with a lot of people. Dishes are pretty authentic. Curry Noodles are delicious. Service was also rather fast. Not a bad experience considering the price.

We had the nasi goreng and green chicken curry. They were both really good! I would 100% recommend Wok On In for your next takeaway meal. The meals were reasonably priced and big enough to share.

Excellent food for an extremely good price. We've been here twice now and every meal has been great. The service is really fast and there's free green tea. Don't expect fancy decor, just good food!

If I had to summarize my experience here, I would say it is good, cheap and fast.

This used to be my takeaway joint during the time I was living in avonhead..I still go here sometimes, if I am out of options and on a tight budget..

Pros:
Consistently good food
Very good price
Takeaway waiting time is usually quick

Cons:
Decor is lacking a bit
Staff could look like they enjoy being there

Recommended Dishes:
Nasi Goreng
Hainan Chicken Rice
Dry Wan Tan Mee
Char Kuay Teow
Malaysian Chicken Curry

Solid takeaway spot for Asian style food. I've never tried any other Malaysian food before, therefore I cannot make a comment on the authenticity of the food. But overall good place for Asian food at a very good price.

Embrace the cheap décor, as Malaysian food of this style isn't meant to be eaten in some fancy restaurant while being served on white square plates. The food here is tasty, and very cheap. With filling mains averaging under $10. Beware however, as all dishes taste like they have A LOT of MSG in them, this doesn't bother myself very much, but others maybe very turned off by the flavouring. Service is what is expected when paying $10 for a meal, also don't go to the toilets.

Love it. Great priced food and great tasting food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Malaysian Chicken Curry and Rice is my favourite dish here. It is so good that I have to have it every week. The other things I like here are the Laksa and the Prawn Noodle soup.
Sesamesamba
What a great value for money. Very delicious and flavoursome. I had Laksa noodles and the soup was amazing. Would go back many times again. Somehow the way they cook their dishes makes the vegetables esp. like I've never tasted before. Very happy with this place.

Best value Chinese restaurant in Christchurch. Superb authentic Chinese fare, highly recommend. the decor is very basic but who cares when the food is that good, whats more you get change from a $10 note, try doing that anywhere in Christchurch these days.

Wok On In ~ And I certainly will again. This little restaurant came Highly recommended and delivered on its reputation. I was with three Ladies, two of which are Asian. This did not help in the ordering process as the waiter spoke Perfect English and understood fully my requirement for No onion.

There was a quite broad selection on the menu and the meals that we chose covered the spectrum. I chose one platter for the table and we all shared our individual meals although I have to admit, I was reluctant to share mine.

Having read the previews available I chose to try the chilli sauce even though it is Not one of my Favourites, Yes it was a cut above the average. The Plum sauce was excellent.

All round the cuisine was Well above average. And yes, it was notable by the number of Asian people there. The Waiter was friendly and asked if we enjoyed our meals.

The Toilet ~ well I would not eat my meal off the floor in there but then . . . . Why would I ? there are tables for that purpose in the Dining room and I wouldn't Pee in there.

The Decor is at its Best - understated, but I Don't eat Decor. Very functional but Not Flash. Clean and well maintained.

If asked, even if Not asked, I would have No hesitation in recommending this small restaurant to Any one. All up Well worthy of my Five Stars

Have been to Wok on In a few times now, eating in and take away. Prices are amazing. Food even better. Chilli sauce out of this world. The flavour is so beautiful and subtle and authentic. We order mainly specialities and Chinese style and have never been disappointed. All fresh veges, the beef melts on your tongue which is in huge contrast to other takeaway and small restaurant outfits. Can have long waittimes especially lunch time. Order in advance. Friendly staff. Atmosphere is not customer friendly, it is cold in there so I prefer take away. All in all has always been 5* - we love it!
Amanda
The food is amazing quality. Fortunately we live close by and eat there regularly and have been eating there for quite some time. Have finally decided to write a review as it is consistent quality each time.

Don't order western dishes like satay chicken/beef or sweet n' sour dishes, but order proper asian dishes. They also alter the intensity of the spice.

Only thing about the place is that the toilets are not to western standard and the environment doesn't look appealing.

Prices - $10 for dish and it's a large portion.
