Review South Of India - Christchurch

K Thi
Food and service just ok. We felt the food was tasty and a good generous amount. I give 4 out of 5 because waiting too long.

Wonderful place for Indian meals. Use this place often and never lets us down with taste quality. Totally recommend 👍😊👍

I have had a wide range of Indian here in Christchurch, and these guys make the tastiest fricken curries. The Rogan Josh is life changing.

Yummm, ordered 5 entrees for 3 of us + 2 naan breads. The fried Cauliflower and cottage cheese entrees served with onions and spices were the stand out dishes 6 stars. So good!.The other dishes IE chicken, prawns and naan bread were good fare. Not often I give 5 stars but hell that was good!!!

Insanely busy but, they fitted me in, bless them. l now understand why as this is easily the best Indian food l've had for years. In fact, it's so good that l'm leaving a review before l've even finished eating as, l need a break before l go in for more of my Lamb Nawabi. (I think l got the name right) I chose it because l hadn't heard of it before and even though lamb is often a disappointing choice, it was outstanding and the lamb was actually tender. I ordered onion bajhis to start and they were so good l had to force myself to stop eating so as to leave room for my main. Definitely will be back.

Good service but the medium was very hot also the mild was hotter than normal so jus bare in mind otherwise good ☺️

The most beautiful restaurant, smells amazing when you walk in the door, staff are super friendly, the food is absolutely delicious !!!!!

We are from out of town so our “go-to” spots were not an option tonight. However, this spot was an excellent stand-in. We started with the Chicken 65 which was spectacular. Then a Lamb Madras & Paneer Jalfrezi for dinner - scooped up with a perfect garlic and cheese naan. If we were locals we would definitely be returning!! 10/10

I Went to this restaurant with family. We had butter chicken, it was delicious and very tasty. Also lamb madras which was super yummy. But the garlic and cheese naan bread was out of this world. The best I’ve ever had. Thank you, we’ll definitely be back for more of your Indian flavoursome food.

Thank you so much for my butter chicken a popular place to stop for lunch especially after a swim at the local hot pools and walk on the pier in Brighton

Cheese nann here is awesome. Highly recommend. Super cheesy, stringy cheese, mozzarella? Super tasty meals. Heat of the meals can sometimes vary. With kids, mild is always the safest bet, as medium heat can sometimes vary from medium, to hot. Maybe a side serving of chilli on the table, as then folk could add heat to suit. In all my years eating here, can say the food is safe, and often served with a smile.

Food was really amazing, would recommend.

Amazing authentic Indian food. Not sweet like many places. The best Chicken Dopyaza in Christchurch and the Dal Makhani was deliciously flavourful and not too creamy

Discusting customer service skills, learn to be a NZ'er or go home. Takes 2secs to say goodbye. Common courtesy

Have been to this place many times over the last five years and after the last unsatisfactory meal i will not be returning. Its always a hit and miss situation here. Half the time the dishes that i got where only just passable and the other times they were substandard. Often the place was in need of cleaning as well. There are other Indian outlets that are much better, cleaner and cheaper too. So that's where i go now.

Our go to Indian place. Great curries, bread and appetizers. Customer service is always great. Staff are quick to assist at any moment. Never had a bad experience.

Nice atmosphere and aloo wada entrée was nice however Palak Paneer and Paneer Makhani were both very disappointing. Not much flavour. Needed salt or something!
Sarah
Average food, poor staff came here for lunch and went to the women's toilet which first of all was outside only to find the door unlocked with one of the male staff members using the bathroom to do number 2. I've also received a dirty dish towel in with my naan when ordering takeout from south of India all this on top of the above average prices will ensure I won't be coming back

The best Biryani in Christchurch. Nice beachside restaurant. Beautiful indian music, spicy curries, topped with a Mango lassi. Definitely must visit Indian restaurant in Christchurch.

We have just left this restaurant and to be honest it was all round disappointing. It was cold, dirty and uninviting and we should have left before ordering but decided to not take it at face value, sometimes this can mean the food is amazing. Not in this case. We ordered the Onion Bajees first..not too bad. Then after a huge wait, of at least 40 Minutes our mains came. Daughter one had a Prawn dish..mild..it hsd no heat or flavour and the Prawns had a really funky taste about them..not nice. Daughter 2 had Butter Chicken..mild..it had no heat or flavour.and which didn't taste like Butter Chicken had hardly any Chicken. I had Chicken Korma..definitely like no Korma I have ever had. I ordered medium heat..there was none and it was the colour of a yellow highlighter. Husband ordered HOT Lamb Vindaloo...no heat at all. The whole meal tasted strange and we have had MANY curries in our time. It was disgusting, we all feel ill and we won't be back. All the staff member could say was that their reviews were good and no one had ever complained
Brendan
Top quality curries. Great variety to choose from. Always friendly service. You can see through to the kitchen where you see the chefs working hard and having fun. Highly recommend the paneers.

South of India doesn't look like much from the outside, or even the inside for that matter, but it is worth the trip to New Brighton (or one of their other restaurants) if you get a chance.

The decor inside isn't anything to write home about but it is relatively well presented, clean and spacious. There is plenty of room between tables and the restaurant is well lit.

They offer both dine in and takeaways, so while the restaurant is sometimes quiet, the takeaway component can mean there are at times quite a number of people waiting around.

We have tried a number of dishes at SOI both dining in and taking away and the food has always been beautifully cooked, flavoursome and looking amazing.

Sometimes the amount of meat in some of the dishes is a bit miserable and there are times when it can take SOI a very long time to get food out. Have experienced as much as 45 minutes waiting for food - but it can be worth the wait.

My single pick to try is the garlic and cheese naan. My wife and I used to love garlic and cheese naan from an old local in Wellington, when we lived there and have struggled to find one as good ... until we moved to Christchurch. SOI's garlic and cheese naan is a must have!

Had a great Chicken Tikka Masala takeaway for tea was great and just the right warmth with authentic taste. I also love the poppadoms n Paleek Paneer as a vegetarian dish. Good value especially at lunch time

I been here twice and I would conclude, the food was nice and it's in good portions..All the meat is halal..Waitress are polite as well as theirs manager..My favorite would be theirs big portions of tandoor chicken and serve sizzling on hot plate..I will definitely coming back..

We have eaten at this restaurant twice and both times the food has been excellent. Tonight we had the vegetarian platter and 2 vegetarian mains. Really tasty and enjoyable food. We asked for medium having had hot last time which was super hot (Indian hot, not Kiiwi hot!), so we wanted to enjoy the flavours instead.

I have ordered several times from this restaurant and the food was ok most of the time. Yesterday I placed an order but the quality of the food was poor. Found only 4 pieces of chicken and lots of potato in Chicken Vindaloo and barely any potato in the Aalo Paratha. When I called today to inform the manager about this. I was told by the Manager that what I was saying couldn't be true because his staff told him differently.
The manager didn't even mention his name and told me even though my complaint wasn't true they'd provide some extra food when I order next time. I will never place an order with This restaurant again and suggest my family friends the same because when they make a mistake instead of owning it and apologize for it they indicate that customer is lying.

Our first visit here and worth the trip across the city. A good suburban Indian restaurant. Service excellent, fast and efficient. As lunch diners we were impressed by the extensive menu and good prices ranging from cheap to near moderate. Mango lassi was superb but the dearest we ever paid for at any Indian lunch dining venue. Rice and generous naans are included in price. I ordered paneer makhani, my Indian wife ordered chicken vindaloo. Both medium. Although mine was delicious it lacked hotness completely but my wifes dish near blew her socks off, plus many used tissues!! She rated her dish below other similar restaurants in flavour. The Indian male staff, although serious, were professional. Just one who took our order we found rather surly, never spoke and seemed not to appreciate our business. Regardless, a pleasant dining experience that I would highly recommend. We will surely return.

GO here all the time, and am never disappointed. I only ever order the palak paneer which is vegetarian but my partner orders meat dishes and loves them also. The mild is quite spicy which I like as it adds to the authenticity.
Portion size is good and always very hot in temperature.
Naans are huge and are free when you order takeaway which I have not found at any other Indian restaurant yet.
Prices very reasonable too.

Sad to give a review like this in the new year, went to this place took a takeaway, sadly the portion was so little (it was less than a kids meal, and charged me and my friend 18$), the container was filled 3/4 of coleslaw and rest chicken, very unsatisfied with the portion served.
Christchurch Curry Club
The Curry Club went here for a good night out and a decent curry and I have to admit that they delivered. The service was well above average and handled a few late arrivals with ease and adjusted the order without complaint.

The food was tasty and well presented. The group shared platters to start with which were very good. No complaints about the mains either and a good supply of kingfisher strong to wash it all down.

Well worth the trip across town!

We go here quite a bit to eat and have take away also, although prefer to dine in.
The staff are always very friendly and ensure we have everything we need. The food is always very quick to come out to us and presented well. Everything we have tried on the menu, korma, madras, kadhi...has been lovely and we will keep going until we have tried the whole menu.

This restaurant is of very high quality. I have eaten in some of the best Indian restaurants though-out NZ and this one is right up there with them.

The service was very good and organised, with very polite and attentive staff. The food presentation was also very good. A credit to the chef.

My wife and I started with the platter for two. I recommend this if you want to get a feel for Indian cuisine.

I am also one to try something a little different from the menu and this place offers a large variety. Something for everyone.

I chose the Chicken Kadhai. It was done to perfection and I would recommend it especially if you enjoy coriander in you dishes.

Congratulations South of India, we will be back on a regular basis.... Keep up the great work!

We decide to go to South Of India at NEW BRIGHTON. My first impressions were very good, nice surroundings and pleasant staff who quickly attended us. Great choice of dishes for a Dinner menu and neatly descriptive. We ordered 2 Garlic Prawn, lamb chops, Samosa etc and for mains Chicken Tenali and Sagwalla dish. Food arrived promptly and was very tasty. We all enjoyed our meal and also heard other favorable comments from nearby tables. We look forward to our next visit.
Sarah
We Love it! Great food, great taste and great service. Was a great place to dine, The guys were lovely and were very professional have never been treated with so much professionalism at a restaurant before. We had banquet for the night that was absolutely fantastic. Not only was the service great but the food was really nice as well! Absolutely recommend!
Sam
My meal was delicious and well presented. To be honest it was better than I was expecting.

Great service. Great staff. Great food. Great location opposite beach. Comfortable chairs. Classy crockery. My favourite Indian. Unbelievably low prices for lunch menu.
Marcel
Been there twice now and the best Indian I've had in NZ. Even better than Corianders and that's saying something. Great service too.
Cheryl Cooper
One of the best, if not the best Indian food I have eaten. This will be one of my return "spots". Well done. Great service. Very clean. Most of all the food is authentic. Love it!!!!

Tina Turner would rate this restaurant as "Simply the Best"! We have dined in virtually all the Indian restaurants in Christchurch but I don't think we will be eating anywhere else but South of India for a long time. The food is superb and the staff second to none. I thought long and hard about writing this review as I thought we should keep the place a secret but that would be selfish! Try it and you will not be disappointed. Did I mention that it is very reasonably priced too?
