The food here is yummy. Chef’s lamb chops and Dal makhni is lip-smacking, perfectly cooked and great value for money. πŸ’™

The food is the best indian food I have ever had, can't wait to go back again. I had dinner with my friend. The naan breads are light and fluffy unlike the naans at many other indian restaurants in Chch. There is a good selection of other breads too. In terms of the food, my favs were the Malai kofta and Palak panner The restaurant feels very clean and has plenty of seating. Duty Manager was so polite and helpful. Asked her about some dishes and she explained those really well. Highly recommended. Thanks

This spicy jewel of India is hidden on the Main Street of seaside township of Sumner in Christchurch. The menu is not large but full of choice, we could of decided between plenty of favorites. With Sizzling starters at $18 and Mains at $20 you can not go wrong. The meals were full of rich Indian flavors and large enough. Lots of rice supplied with main courses and the Garlic Naan felt very fresh. Will be back, and soon to try the rest of the menu. Enjoy, finger licking good ;-)

Very nice meal. Service a wee bit slow as I think they were very busy on takeaways. Will go again.

I love Indian Sumner, we've been going here probably once a month or every couple of months since we moved to Christchurch 2.5 years ago. We're big foodies and I try and eat vegan, the vegan adn vegetarian options are really good! I'm genuinely surprised about the negative experiences/reviews as we've always found the service and food very good (super friendly and helpful staff) and no complaints re cleanliness. There must be a bad egg within the staff as this isn't normal and we've never experienced bad service or food. Hopefully this has been addressed as I would hate people to be off by these negative reviews, it's a bloody great Indian and good atmosphere. I've even booked it for my birthday on Saturday the 12th Oct.

I have been going to this restaurant since 2 years. Fantastic food in the heart of the Christchurch City Center. Very delicious food and worth for your money. Best customer service and the people over there are really helpful all the time when you were there. One of the best Indian restaurant. It is really worth giving it a try if you like Indian curries.

I have been going here for more than 2 years, both the food and service are extremely good here.Β
Once we went late night at around 9:30 and the guys over there opened the kitchen just for us.Β
I don't think this kind of service will be offered anywhere else.

Unfortunately we chose to dine at this place. Arrived for dinner around 6.30 pm. We were the only people at that time. Our table was dirty with grease marks all over it. C'mon guys you could have given us any other table. Windows were dirty, toilets were shocking and there was no sense of cleanliness. Finally got our drinks after 20 minutes and then it took another hour for our food. We would have no complaints if the food was good as we were not in hurry. Nothing was eatable, burnt naan bread, cold curries served in dirty plates. It was a disaster and it was the worst dining experience with laughable service. When we spoke to waiter, the guy couldn't care less and wanted to see our back asap.

I wanted to write a detailed description of our experience but the memory is too painful to recount. Just do not go into this place. Our only regret was that we did not refuse to pay for the dreadful food we were given. We were just happy to get out, learn our lesson and never go back in. We didn't bother to complain. With hindsight, that was a mistake and one that we will never repeat anywhere else.
This site will not let me give it zero star, so I have to give 1 but it is minus 1 .

The best Indian restaurant in Christchurch. Always consistent, great service and fabulous food! We eat here every week, the staff no us by name and our favourite dishes are always consistently great. The meat to sauce ratio is perfect and full of flavour. Whether you dine in or takeaway you are guaranteed a great evening

I really don't understand the negative reviews!!!! We are from Glasgow and know a thing or two about curry. Indian Sumner never disappoints. The food is exquisite. Ambiance, service and music all compliment the food. Anyone reading the reviews don't be put off. Go and judge for yourself. There appears to be a common thread to the negative comments that leads me to agree with the other reviewer, it could be the opposition.

Great ambience and friendly staff, but the food was disappointing. I had rogan josh, but it was mainly sauce and very little meat. The taste was like a packet curry, with no freshness or zing. I felt as if I'd been ripped off. The rice was not very freshly cooked either; it had been reheated in a microwave. I could have cooked a better meal at home for a quarter of the price.

We had a pleasant night at Indian Sumner.

The food was tasty, however none of us were asked for the spice level we wanted which some of the crew found interesting.

No Kingfisher Strong was available (a cardinal sin to some if us). The service was friendly but they seemed to struggle with dealing with a large group.

Overall a good night and enjoyable food.

Having dined at this delightful restaurant numerous times I cannot understand the 1 star rating, ridiculous, best Indian food I have had...friendly efficient staff. Recommend the mixed platter...superb.Great value for money. Definitely a 5 star rating.

I can completely understand why this restaurant received a one star review. The service was friendly and the music and atmosphere were certainly authentic, however this is where the authenticity ends. The 2 main dishes we ordered tasted identical, contained no vegetables and bore a surprising similarity to ragu with curry powder. I have to add that the naan bread was very nice, however the rice tasted as though it had been pre cooked and microwaved. I was really looking forward to this meal, unfortunately it was the second worst Indian meal I have ever eaten.

They make a pretty good curry here. It's a definite if your craving Indian in Sumner

Have eaten here probably a 100 times, is our Sunday evening ritual. We enjoy the food every time and never get tired of it as it is amazing. We spent a month in India and cannot say we found anything better than what is on offer here. The staff passion and enthusiasm for the food and creating a great experience for their customers is second to none.

Great food everytime. Could eat this every day.

The best Indian without a doubt! I am a lover of Indian food and have tried numerous Indian restaurants around Christchurch, but none compare to Indian Sumner, which is probably why it has gained such a loyal local customer base.
I have been to Indian Sumner countless times and the food is always delicious, both entrees and curries. The setting is cosy and authentic, with friendly and attentive staff.
I don't know how this restaurant got a 1-star review, but I am inclined to think that the author is associated with rival restaurant Little India!
Sumner Local
The worst interpretation of Indian cuisine I have ever experienced.

Have been twice and both times bhaji's raw in the middle and mango chicken is like watties tomato soup, curries are tasteless and consistently poor quality, quantity combined with a 'don't give a toss' service.

Go across the road for great curry and service to match

Best Indian food I've ever had in NZ. I have been visiting this place for years now, and the food quality and taste haven't changed a bit. Friendly staff and owners, nice ambiance.
