Review Baretta - Christchurch

Caroline T
Got the grabone deal for a going away present to my mom. The food was wonderful but my only complaint would be that 3 of the 5 courses were all deep fried so it sat a little heavy especially with a panacotta desert. Other than that though, everything was wonderful and great wine pairings.

Went here for lunch with my husband (we had a grabone) and was really impressed. We got (to split) the steak sandwich and pasta carbonara. Both were super delicious. My husband reckoned it was the best steak sandwich of his life. It was not very busy, which surprised me because the service and food was so good!

Outstanding. We had the grabone degustation dinner with matching wines and it was FLAWLESS. Amazing service, great atmosphere, we could not ask for better. 10/10.

Awesome decor, friendly staff and even more delicious food.

Had a great lunch here on Saturday. The welcome was good and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The meal was very good, each dish we had was exceptionally tasty. The wine was great too. All finished off with a very nice coffee. Couldn't have been better, will revisit!

Stopped in for dinner as it wasn't crowded, pleasantly supeised. The menu is small but the food was delicious. Service was great too, we asked for some red sauce to go with the fried ravioli and the chef seems to have made it from scratch! Only complaint is that the bar was slow, we were done with dinner before getting our second drink.

Really good value 5 course degustation meal. All courses very well cooked and presented. Efficient and friendly service. Great wine matches. The only let down was a TV on the wall in the restaurant area which could be off when people are dining. All in all a very good evening.

Went there for lunch, was not very busy. It's definitely more night clubbier than it is restauranty. It has dark decor and minimal windows . But other wise nice enough. It does have a court yard, but the weather wasn't particularly good so we didn't use it. Staff were friendly and efficient drinks and food both came quickly and were good. Tired some food of their express menu which seems to be a basic lunch time menu. It was good though and reasonably priced. Happy to say the food was basic but much better than expected

Amazing Italian food. Portions are big so get ready to get a doggy bag. Nice backyard with bars outside and we got lucky with some live music just before Christmas. A place frequented by locals it seems. Thus, very friendly atmosphere.

Great food (highly recommend the arancini balls and chicken burger - although a little spicy), beautiful coffee, and lovely atmosphere outside! Only negative is I wish there was more comfortable seating outside like they used to have.

Absolutely incredible dining experience. The entrees, mains, and desserts were all outstanding. The service was the best that I have had in recent years. I will be coming back and I highly recommend going and trying the food at Baretta.

Went here for lunch. The service was spot on and the pricing was reasonable but a little on the higher side. They have a lot of gluten free options which was brilliant and the pizza was delicious to the point that I took the left overs home... all in all, a nice spot to stop with friends.

One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. Restaurant by week - bar/club by weekend. But don’t let that scare you the food was fantastic. It’s a shame that they have one Google review platform for both the bar and restaurant. Because the food is incredible and ratings are brought down by clubbers

Poor service
Poor attitude
Overpriced drinks
Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy
(also no redbull.... wtf)

Wonderful bar and club. Can't speak for the food as we did not have a meal there but we thoroughly enjoyed the open and wide bar atmosphere. This place also has a great DJ! Standard alcohol prices, good music and great crowd.

Always great food and great service, relaxed dining in a group or more intimate if in a couple..prices reflect the quality and presentation of food

I ordered the Ora King salmon with verjuice, orange and cress salad risotto... I had assumed I would get a salmon fillet and was most disappointed to see tiny flecks of salmon - what a complete waste of such a beautiful fish. For pudding I had the creme brulee - nice. We were a very large group and I think staff struggled with producing so many meal even though we had pre-ordered.

From its lifestylish outdoor arrangement to its indoor castle Inn terior, this Italian specialty is one of my favorite places Christchurch has to offer. The service is top notch and the food is seriously very delicious from its small but accommodating anti pasto starter to its Carne Pizza mains, my only gripe is the price for starting dishes such as the Baretta salad which is a plate of leaves for $22 which is silly really even for fine dining. However this is compensated by the fantastic service, delicious pizzas and crazy fun nightlife

The pizzeria that keeps on giving. By evening Beretta is mature wifh class and by late is transformed into a sprawling tranche of the Christchurch night life. I do love this place, great cocktails. Recommendable to all.

Tonight (30/12/16) around 930-10pm I was enjoying a few drinks with a group of mates when I ordered a drink from the bar (quad shot of jack daniels on the rocks), took it back to our table, had a sip and noticed the glass was dirty (lip stick all around the glass). I took the drink back to the bar and asked the blonde girl who served me if I could have another where she told me she would poor the drink into a clean glass, I said no I would like a new one altogether.

I have had meningitis before so even if the glass was cleaned I am very cautious which means I see the glass and the drink no longer sanitary.

So anyway, she poured me a drink but it was only a double shot. I told her the drink she originally served was a quad shot which is when she told me I had already had a drink and she couldn't remember giving me a dirty glass and she could just give away free alcohol. It completely embarrassed me in front of everyone at the bar listening making me feel like I was trying to score extra alcohol for nothing when putting the old drink and the new drink side by side there was clearly nearly double in the old drink. I said to her if that"s the case I would rather have my money back for the double that she had re poured as at this stage I was clearly not happy with the service and how she handled the situation, when she continued to tell me she couldn't give me a refund. I know it's only a glass of spirits but being embarrassed and having service like that just getting into town lost your bar 6 customers wanting to have celebratory 30th birthday drinks at your bar. As all the bad reviews say on this site the service is poor

We visited with a Grab One voucher on a Wednesday night. The food was lovely; very tastefully presented and tasted lovely. We love the ambience of Baretta. The wine list was very average and quite pricey for what was on offer. Not a great selection.

The service was very substandard. The waiter tried hard but was clearly too busy for just one person to manage.

Whilst we love the ambience and don't hesitate to go if there is a Grab One voucher on offer, I would not pay full price as I consider it to be overpriced for what you get.

Amazing food..l had the pork belly and it was so tender and the accompanying vegetables amazing..the staff were friendly and extremely helpful..l highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal

Outstanding place. Suitable for a formal or a casual outing. Food/beverages A+. Phenomenal interiors and ambience. Very friendly staff and top notch service.

Tried this for first time, everything was delicious. Staff were very attentive. Entrees were very nice, and big servings. Pork belly for a main was awesome. Very tender melted in mouth, would definitely go back.

Steamed mussels and Arancini were the entrées. These were just beautiful.

I had the glazed pork belly as main. The lean part was too dry and needs more seasoning/gravy. The dish was not balanced.

Veal ribeye was for my partner and it was a good one.

Btw the vintage deco style is a big plus.
Baretta is one of my favorite establishments in the city for two reasons: 1) the food is amazing and 2) their outdoor patio bar is a great place to mingle with young professionals in the city. Visit Baretta on a weekend night and be sure you're into the bar well before 10:00 as the line of 20 and 30-somethings extends down the block. If you're visiting for the restaurant and a little taste of Italy in Christchurch, be sure to make a booking a few days in advance. They DO have Entertainment Guide coupons!

FOOD: My husband and I started with the grilled ciabatta with parsley pesto and olive jam. The bread was extremely filling, so I definitely recommend sharing with several people. The olive jam was my favorite spread, but the parsley pesto is light and bright and an interesting take on pesto. We decided to split the side salad with parmesan cheese on top and a light balsalmic dressing. It was a crisp salad with a lot of complementary tastes. I ordered the Chicken Leg as my main and it was cooked beautifully: juicy and tender. It was served with pickled pumpkins (which were very interesting) potatoes with ricotta and garnished with radishes. I cleaned the plate! I just wish there had been about one serving less of the pickled pumpkins. My husband ordered the Squid Ink Gnocchi with mussels and calamari. If you enjoy the smell of fish and seafood overload, this is the dish for you. My husband enjoyed it, but the smell was overwhelming for me (a non-fish eater). We opted to pair the meal with a bottle of Chandon, but their wine list is quite extensive and the waiter will be more than happy to offer pairing suggestions. In fact, the waiters at the restaurant are on top of their game. Never was a glass left empty nor were we left alone for too long (but not in a creepy hovering way). He seemed to have his eye on our table at all times which made the evening a breeze.

Step outside before or after your meal to enjoy a cocktail from the patio bar. Often there is live music playing and heated tables to relax on.

What's the catch for the place? Be prepared to hand over your first born child with the meal as it ain't cheap. But quality food and impeccable service comes with a price.

Only been here a few times. The first was for an evening meal. Beautiful food and great service. We went for an afternoon platter on a nice day one other time. I definitely recommend one of the platters on a nice day outside listening to music and having a beverage. Attentive staff great food and a nice unique environment. And the value for money aspect was fine. Not faultless but up there as far as restaurants in Christchurch are concerned

Okay food, reasonable wine selection [pinot noir had heaps of residue in the bottom of the glass], below average service [guy apologised because he forgot about us!] plus had to go and ask for a water refill. Nice surroundings but won't rush back

Excellent service. Reasonable selection from the menu and good wine/beer list. For a mid week business dinner this couldn't have been a better discovery while wandering around central Chch.

Just been here again and this new visit reinforced my high opinion of Baretta. Excellent staff and food.

Restaurant
layout is great with excellent decor. Unfortunately that's where it ends.
Overall the meals was tasteless, presentation was boring and the meals arrived
lukewarm. We were still very hungry after our meals, which is a shame when
paying $36 for a steak with an extra $9 for veggies. Overall a disappointing
experience where only two diners were happy with their meals out of eight in the group, we won't be returning in a hurry.

Great atmosphere, food ordered was a platter, good variety and plenty of it, so great for sharing, on Fridays nights when buys always opportunities to get served and plenty of seating outside with fab heaters on cold nights.

While this was one of my favourite restaurants in Christchurch, the food really isn't up to standard with the new chef as we have come to expect. New front of house staff also don't seem to be as comfortable. Sadly I would no longer recommend.

What a lovely evening at Baretta! Our waiter James was friendly, helpful and took great care of us. The food was divine, the atmosphere buzzy but relaxed and of course the decor very cool!
The deal voucher we bought excellent value and gave us the excuse to eat and drink twice as much as we would have! We could not fault any aspect of the food or service, how often does that happen!
Earlier in the week we had a completely different experience at a similarly priced and cold, noisy restaurant with staff who didn't seem to care and excessively large meals with far too much, far too sweet sauces.
Thanks Baretta, we'll be back!
Ps and the toilets smell good!!!!

I'm upgrading Baretta to "average" because I DO like the décor. I like the vibe on several of the times I've been there, I just dislike the staff.

It's hard not to feel that there's a "we're too cool for school" attitude from certain of the people serving, despite a lack of attention to order of serving and poor expression of courtesy or politeness.

The music is great, the food passable and the alcohol fitting in nicely with what is a beautiful fit-out.

Pity the only time I've been treated like a valued customer was when I wore a tux to a ball and popped in looking more affluent than the norm.
Scarlett Fairhall
Great wine list but staff were very rude, before we even sat down they demanded a credit card off us, when asked why the excuse was basically they couldn't trust that we wouldn't do a dine N dash... Very very rude, then when we went to pay they couldn't find my card that I handed over and had to flip through the book 3 or 4 times to find it.. Further to that just about every time I had a sip of water a waitress would come and refill it, really felt like she was just bored. If the glass was empty a refill would be great but she was just excessive. - Would only go back because they have my favourite wine that I cannot find anywhere else.

Went to Baretta for dinner on the 18th March and it was exceptional. This is my third time to Baretta and it has been outstanding every time.

Our waiter was excellent, very friendly and efficient.

The food was amazing! I had the Beef and it was perfectly cooked. I also loved the pea and panchetta side, absolutely delicious.

The only con was that there was no Baked Alaska on the menu anymore and it was delicious, however, I had the coconut chocolate pudding and it was equally delicious.

I will be recommending Baretta to all my friends and family and will definitely be back.

We had a beautiful evening at Baretta on the 6th Feb. The food was outstanding and the service was absolutely amazing. It is a credit to the owners. Well done and it is lovely to see a restaurant of this quality coming back to the city. I highly recommend a visit if you enjoy good food and great service set in lovely surroundings.

Baretta Bar & Restaurant exceeded expectations. Our group of 9 went to celebrate my birthday. There have been some negative reviews but I can honestly say that the service and the food was exceptional on this occasion. We all enjoyed ourselves and the meals were great. A credit to the staff who were very pleasant and welcoming. Nothing was a bother and congratulations also to the chef who did an amazing job with the meals. Well done guys and a great time was had by all. We look forward to coming back in the future.

We arrived to an almost empty restaurant and were told there were no sit down tables available. So we went to leave and after much confusion and awkwardness we were
given a table. The waiter was kindly and tried hard but interrupted and adjusted napkins, water etc about 25 times in 45 minutes. The waitress made us feel like an inconvenience. The food was rather bland. When we left almost all the tables were still vacant. Struggle to return.

Went for a quick lunch, and started with an excellent cappuccino. The two linguines were well presented, with good flavour. I might just suggest that fresh peas would be greatly preferable to frozen peas with the beef/lamb linguine, and the addition of some fresh mint on top would be nice. It would also be nice to have 1 or 2 more pasta options, such as puttanesca, and a slow-cooked bolognese/ragu.
There was an unusual dish on the specials menu featuring both salmon and gurnard. Not sure how well those 2 fish would work together.
This is a great addition to the dining scene in Christchurch.

I had lunch here on Sunday and the service was terrible. we had been there for 1/2 before we got water and a drinks order taken and after one hour we had still not received any food. the food was OK not fantastic.
they need to improve the service as there were 9 of us and we had entrees we shared and a main, with wine, and it was well over two hours. the restaurant was not that busy and there seemed to be a lot of staff on.

Outstanding service and food, by far the nicest restaurant we've been to in Christchurch for a long time.

The food was delicious, cooked perfectly and for a very well-presented restaurant, priced very reasonably. Our waiter was attentive, polite and prompt despite clearly being busy with other tables.

Would recommend going earlier in the night as it got louder due to the bar filling up (Saturday evening, you'll get that!), but not uncomfortably so.

Absolutely recommended, we'll definitely be going back.

We (my partner, our 6month old bub and myself) went to Baretta for dinner on fathers day. We had a great young guy as our waiter he was very prompt, we ordered the fillet and chicken and they were GREAT! We were regularly checked on and well looked after. Then at the end our bill was less than $100! I was very happy and will be going back for sure!

I went to Baretta bar with some mates on a Thursday night for drinks and we thought it was really cool so went back for dinner on Saturday. However we got there and had to wait for about 5 minutes for someone to talk to us, they told us to take a seat in the restaurant and someone would be over. We sat there for 20 minutes and got no acknowledgement despite having 2 wait staff just cleaning/resetting tables and talking. Was very excited to try the food but left instead and went elsewhere.

Have been to Baretta several times, but had dinner there last Sat night and the new menu was great - the steak was perfectly cooked and that is coming from a fussy diner.

Particularly love relaxing at Baretta on a Sunday afternoon with friends as they offer a great selection of wine, live music and food to share (try the cheeseboard). The staff that hv served us have all been fantastic - love the place!!!

Very disappointing. The decor is beautiful, the toilets spotless, but oh dear, that was about all the good points we found when we dined there for lunch today. Our Waitress was probably the most unhelpful we have encountered. We inquired as to whether or not it was her first day there and we're told she doesn't usually waitress, just does "odd jobs" there. We would suggest they put her back in the odd jobs cos a waitress she aint! People skills are very important in the hospitality industry, and a smile goes a long way, a grunt does not! We ordered an entree to share, and a light meal each to follow........it all arrived together, and we found it all rather bland and tasteless. We were the only customers there and can fully understand why. We will not be returning.

Pros; Good Food, and cool inside

Cons: Service was very lame,. We went for dinner at 7pm and the music was far too loud for diners. We found that the maitre d' wasn't exactly friendly, and made a fuss when we arrived about our booking. Never got to the bottom of that one.

I wouldn't go back for Dinner, as there are far better places out there for quality dining, but would go back for some beers with mates.
