Review Cassels & Sons Brewing - Christchurch

Aug 9 Update: we came back for the $75 takeaway deal and the pizzas just aren't that great. So expensive for such small pizzas! You can't pick up a slice without half of the toppings sliding off. Disappointed but still a great spot to grab a beer. Original: Bumping spot on a chilly Friday night. Parking can be tricky but worth it if you snag a spot. Delicious beer, we'll be back for sure!

Delicious local beer, multiple great pizzas options. Friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere.

The best beers in Christchurch. Great food. Brilliant service. Definitely be back!

Had a lunchtime meal, which was exceptional for pub grub. So good we went back a few days later for an evening meal.

Such an amazing place! Food was delicious, staff were fab and the outside area is dog friendly 🥰

We turned up without reservation and I wanted to try their milk stout and pizza so bad that we agreed to sit outside in the half dark and in the wind with our jackets on. Not the most comfortable way to eat pizza, but it was so worth it! The food is delicious and so is the beer. And everyone knows it, so it's always busy. Note to self; next time we'll book a table :-).

Really enjoyed our work function there, the place is nice, the food and drinks are great, especially the beer tasting and buffalo wings! The last call is a bit too early if you ask me, otherwise no complaint.

Great spot to dine at, sip a beer, awesome live music on occasion as you review all the purchases made next door at The Tannery, lol

Glad I didn't turn away when I first tried to enter through the mall doors and found them locked! Right when I was about to give up, I thought I'd check what the separate black building at the end was and luckily THIS was it! Bar staff helped me try a few samples to pick something perfect for this cold winter day, and (as no real surprise) their two-time world's best stout was the suggested I ended up going with. Smooth, not too creamy nor roasty, and light yet like stout. Overall, feels like a friendly place where some come to eat and others come to drink, but it's warm, there's a decent number of tables, and they've got a good tap range so again... Glad I actually found the entrance!

A great place uf you want to meet friends for a nice beer and food. Hand made pizza with unIque local flavours. Own beer on tap. Made in same area. Not high end. Reasonably priced.

Nice place, but it needs to lift the game. It all seems like we're good and don't need to get better, but we've been a few times, and no change is exactly what you get. It's considered a fancy place, so let's lift the game peeps.

The staff on Saturdays for breakfast are amazing. The food is so yummy. What a great breakfast go there.

Another great pizza from these guys. Always go for the Akaroa Salmon one. Went on a Tuesday and got the 2 for 1 deal. Great value.

I'm not a big drinker so I like quality and the beer here is definitely quality. They have many of their own brews as well as some others. The food is good too. All served up by fiendly helpful staff. Thanks Mr Cassels great vision to build this pub and The Tannery.

The surroundings are uninviting, uncomfortable and loud. The joint made me think of a milking shed/warehouse thrown up to milk/divest people of their money with substandard beer and food.Have been to this brew bar on three occasions and its always much the same with its below average beer and food. I will not be returning for a fourth time.  They always try to sell you only their beer(there's hardly any other beers on offer),its none to good compared with other craft brewers. Every time I've had their beer it brings on digestion problems,so never again. As for the food,we ordered fries($10) for a half filled bowl, 2 pizzas($26 each) they had very little in the way of toppings on both and more cheese is needed. The food we received looked nothing like the photos here on Zomato. For our $62 spent on food, there was nothing to recommend. The only redeeming feature was the front line staff who are really good,so instead of a 1 rating, its a 2.

Friendly, honest people complemented by food of the same genre. Leanne and I were made to feel part of the family which added to the the atmosphere. We were pleasantly surprised by the perfectly cooked eggs as the taste was fantastic - we could only attribute this the them being organic and freedom farmed. As foodies we love this focus on quality taste instead of quantity. Well done Cassels & Sons and the great staff.

Went there a few months ago and was happy! Ordered pizza which was really nice, lots of flavour and the staff at the bar we very helpful with choosing a brew! Good location and could potentially be a very successful place.

Very well known and loved place among the locals as well as visitors!! Perfect atmosphere on a cold night surrounded by boutique shops :-)<br/>Known for its crafted Beers and Woodfired Pizzaaaaaa... must try ! <br/>I could have given 5 rating but the staffs in there are quite in a rush to clear the tables. May be the staff needs to be bit more polite!!<br/>Would definitely recommend to go to Tannery and end your day with amazing food and beer !! <br/><br/>

We came here for brunch one day while strolling around the Tannery. The atmosphere and decor was nice, with good service. Loved their range of home brewed beers. The food was pretty good, with fair pricing. Recommend coming here for a brunch or lunch while having a look round the Tannery

Sunday brunching. We had rung to book but might have been ok anyway. Usual brunch options available. Service was a little slow but was apologized for so that makes all the difference! I had the eggs benedict which came on a nice crispy hasbrown. Eggs were very orange and runny. Holandaise was very good, if a little too much of it. Others had the big brekkie, loved the kranski. The hot cakes, which were huge and fluffy. And a tasting paddle for the bro in law. Cool little spot that has popped up post quake and right next to the tannery, arcade of boutique style shops. Makes for a nice morning out

Went here twice yesterday for brunch and dinner as it was pretty much my last day in Christchurch and my friend loves their coffee, pizza, and beer. Amazing brunch, pizza, beer, and good coffee. <br/><br/>Had Egg Benedict and Flat White for my brunch and Pigeon Bay Pizza, Fries and Pale Ale for my dinner. I am a fan of their hash brown and hollandaise sauce! Super good. Their flat white was good too. Pigeon Bay was one of the best pizza experiences but then I just love pizza in general. Decided to order fries and their aoli was great and the handmade tomato sauce was interesting as it has a hint of cinnamon. I had Pale Ale and it tasted pretty but not too pretty.<br/><br/>Atmosphere inside was good and homey but the outside was kind of dead. <br/><br/>I think the pricing was fair for such great meal.<br/><br/>Would definitely pay a visit when I come to Christchurch again

Brilliant spot for a drink. Menu is not big but everything looks fabulous. Calamari and flatbread both pretty yum and the burgers were great, love it when a meat patty is cooked to medium. Fries are worth a mention too!!

I had rang and booked a table for 2. When we arrived we had to wait as the table had some other people seated, then told that we were to be seated outside in the smokers area, weren't given a choice we don't smoke. The lighting was poor couldn't read the menu very well. The food wasn't that great have had better. Will not be going there again. One of the worst dining experiences we have ever had.

Great food, great staff, great venue. A perfect place to spend an afternoon with friends. Love the whole feel of the restaurant. Staff are well informed on the menu and always ready to answer any questions. Great selection of beers and the pizzas are awesome.

On out trip to Christchurch we wanted to check out a Vineyard and a Brewery. We didn't plan on doing both the same day, but it was awesome.<br/><br/>We arrived when it was packed, so it took a while to get a seat. Once we did get a seat, it took a little while to be served, but after that it was an excellent night.<br/><br/>The beer taster box thing was an excellent idea. Really enjoyed the Dunkel which had some really strong chocolatey flavours going on.<br/><br/>We got the calamari to start which had a lovely sauce with it. And the Te Oka pizza was such a delicious pizza!<br/><br/>The atmosphere was great, and if the service had been just that little bit better it would have been 5 stars.

Well, I decided to go to The Brewery for lunch on my 21st, I didn't have ID so I rang up asking if I needed ID for a lunch and that I was not interested in any alcohol, which I was told because it was a cafe/restaurant, that I did not need one, I end up arriving there and after knowing I had been talked about by 4-5 staff members for about 5 minutes one finally confronted me asking for my ID, I said I didn't have it and that I had called before, she asked if it was for my 21st as she must've heard about it and I said yes, she walks away and about 2 minutes later I'm confronted again saying that I will need ID to be served, I asked where the manager was and she went off to go get him, after about 10 minutes she finally returns but without a manager, I leave bewildered at what just happened, 50 minutes later into my travels home my girlfriends mum had been ringing up wondering why on Earth we were told something and then the complete opposite happens, ends up they apparently want to apologize and want me to come back in, I was not very interested but was pretty much roped into going back in so I could have a good 21st, upon by re-arrival I was confronted (not greeted) by the American Manager, who belligerently stated that I was not getting served as I had no ID, I asked him why I was told over the phone that I didn't need ID which he quickly replied stating that I wasn't told i didn't need ID, but that I did! I tried assuring him that I wasn't told what he claims, which pretty much fell on deaf ears, he ended up bringing out a guy that had apparently been on the phone with me and asked him what had happened, the guy could barely even look at me when he blatantly lied trying to say that he had told me I needed ID, but then I wondered where did the cafe/restaurant part come from then? I told the manager, well I know what I heard over the phone and it wasn't that, the manager flicks his hand up and then says bring your id next time then walks off back to his office without even wanting to make things all sorted.<br/><br/>I've never heard of people outrageously lying to customers and also managers been downright arrogant to customers, disgusting, and they claim they pride themselves on customer service? What a complete joke, McDonalds has way better customer service than these buggers will ever have!
