Review New York Deli - Christchurch

Brett “Barfussnz”
I have tried all three locations and all seem to be great. I have tried most but stay true to the New York Pork on Turkish. Consistently fresh bread and roasted pork. Love the addition of crackling. Always get the fries as the seasoning is savage. On negative would be portion size or chips for price. Otherwise get on this.

Absolutely delighted. Staff was super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable on their products. Were happy to answer all my questions. Menu is well laid out with plenty of options. The deli is tucked away slightly so keep your eyes peeled so you don't miss it and there is off-street parking which is a plus. Great hours and ordering online available for those in a rush. As for the food that I purchased - incredible. Well presented and packed full of flavour without being over the top. Just the perfect blend of everything. This will be my new go-to for Christchurch.

Have only recently started coming here as I didn't know they did vegetarian food. However I was pleasantly surprised. Partner got the NYC steak hero, and I got the vege bagel. So good. Not a bad price, give it a go

We were taken here by a friend who is now a local, she had visited here several times. So we patiently joined the queue of office workers waiting for their lunch. It me several minutes to make my selection, and then I changed my mind twice whist being served. I finally settled on the Bronx Beef. I liked the way you see them cut the meat up thickly as my sandwich was prepared. The others two diner also enjoyed the options chosen. It it was a small place with a few seats, a great lunch was enjoyed.

Got a sandwich and some chiparoonies from there today and by god was it delicious. When you order a sandwich from these guys, not only do you receive the most mouth water sandwich but the best service and great banter ! Quality crew and quality food. Thanks team !

Great sandwiches! Several choices for toppings and bread. Not sure if it's expensive or not because everything in New Zealand seemef over priced to me but I enjoyed this place quite a bit while I was in Christchurch.

The food is quite good and the staff are friendly. There's a decent amount of variety too. The dining area is nice. Prices are on the high end for the quantity though. Definitely worth a try.

The best service! First time having new York deli and didn't know how it worked at all. Got explained everything and were very patient with me. And food was delicious! Will definitely be back 👍🙂

I friggen love this place. These are proper made to order rolls/sandwiches. Where else can you get smoked salmon as your chosen meat?! YUMMMMMMM! Too busy for me to get my lunch here though, the line is out the door, but it's so worth it.

Loooove the New York Pork with crackling, definitely my no. 1! Also, really enjoy the New York Choc Brownies!! This place is a super fancy version of 'subway', and definitely worth the extra $$

Love it every time from the Lincoln road location, never stingy on the meat and the sandwiches are always consistently good. Happy chatty staff too. 5 stars

Friendly staff. Amazing fries and sandwiches. Very filling and delicious. Dine in or take-away. If you like pork crackling, you have to try theirs!!

By far the best sandwiches I've ever had, also some of the tastiest food I've ever had. Priced competitively with certain big name sandwich chains but with much larger servings.

Came in for dinner before going to a concert and staff was really friendly, food (Steakhouse New Yorker, Pork Sandwich and a side of chips) were excellent and so quick! Def going again :)

I waited almost 20 Minutes for a toasted bagel and cream cheese and there were maybe 4 other people in the place. When it arrived it was barely toasted and inedible.

My partner and I loved this place when we lived in Christchurch, no sandwich place in Auckland has come close. When we were last in Christchurch it was worth a 30 minute walk to obtain delicious sandwiches. Everything about this place was just as good as we remembered it. Keep making delicious sandwiches!

This place may have nice options for the meat sandwiches but I ordered the vegetarian sandwich which was a big mistake. The sundried tomato pesto was sour which tasted awful. The salads were not that fresh either. Overall I believe cheese should be added at no charge. There was not enough pesto and no other sauce available without being charged, overall a bland dry sandwich. Friendly service though.

Got the Obama blt, was served by a young girl who wasn't overly friendly. A LOT of mayo was put onto my sandwich which I only realised while the next girl was putting brown iceberg lettuce and very old looking tomatoes on top of my burnt bacon. Wasn't overly impressed, could only manage a couple of bites. I've been to the bush inn nyd many times and never had any problems with their food or customer service. I personally wouldn't return to the addington store

Yes yes, very yes. The multigrain bread is some of the best I've ever tasted, and really makes some of their sandwiches. I've been through the whole menu now, and can safely say that everything is top notch. Prices are reasonable too for the quality you get.

I used to love this place but it seems to have taken a turn for the worse recently... The last couple of times I've had a sandwich it has been quite average. This place used to do amazing meat - lean, tender, generous - however the last 3 I've had, the meat was , fatty, chewy and the bread went soggy before i could eat it. I'm not sure was has lead to this but i won't be going back anytime soon.

Finally a great sandwhich joint in Christchurch! We went on a Saturday around lunch time and the line was out the door (this may have been due to a plethora of athletic events as most patrons were on a high school athletic team). The smells emanating from the restaurant were strong enough to keep you firmly planted in line though. I'd like to say the line moves fast, but, alas. Though this place is called "New York Deli" it's definitely a take on some American staple sandwiches. As a former New Yorker, the pastrimi ingredients weren't quite correct, but as a new local Kiwi, I thought it sounded great anyway (I never liked American pastrami sandwiches anyhow). The names all have a fun New York theme like Brooklyn Short Rib, Bronx Beef and Salmon on Broadway (except the Obama BLT, that was a random outlier). I opted for the NYD Cheesecake (last minute switch because they ran out of the Chicken SoHo) which is a seasoned flank stank (cooked more medium rare than dry and chewy) with chipotle BBQ (more bbq than chipotle) and cheese on top. I opted to add some veggies at the end of the line, too, as the service works much like a Subway store. I had my sandwhich on turkish bread, but there are two other options which both looked fantastic and fresh as well. I'm excited to go back and try some of the other options, but also, to arrive before 10:30 am and try some of their bagel creations. If there bagels are as good as their bread options, you won't be disappointed.

My sandwich was tasty and the store was nice and clean. A great deal nicer than places like Subway. Service could have been better but a decent experience overall.

The service was average; nothing outstanding. The sandwich that I had was delicious and a good size, and the coffee was lovely. I really admired the store's decor and theme, and found everything to be tidy and clean. Keen to come back again.

Come hungry! I can't help but visit this hidden gem that serves mouth-watering sandwiches, more often that I care to admit. I have tried most of their sarmies and am yet to be disappointed. (although the Brooklyn Short Rib is my go-to) Fresh bread, fresh salad, fresh cooked meat... topped up with delicious relishes and fantastic staff makes this my favourite food place in Chch. Do yourself a favour and go there today.

Delicious! Great service, the owner himself is frequently working here and is lovely. My partner and I go here quite often for lunch. We always get the New York Pork sandwich and it is amazing! Thoroughly recommend!

It wasn't until recently that I visited New York Deli at the recommendation of a friend who's a regular NYD patron. I'm not a huge sandwich enthusiast, and it was the sandwiches my friend was raving about. It was therefore with mild trepidation that I decided to dine at New York Deli one Sunday evening. I noted that salads were on the menu, and I'm always partial to a good hearty salad! Now here's the secret to getting the best salad in town courtesy of the very knowledgable and flexible staff at NYD: order to DINE IN! The takeaway salad container is dwarfed by the size of the enormous oval shaped dine in plate, which was filled with extremely generous helpings of all ingredients at my request! A+ already in my books! Then, to top this off, the staff advised which dressings to accompany my particular choices, and they hit the bullseye with this also: the flavour combinations were nothing short of superb! So it is a big thumbs up to New York Deli, and you guys will be seeing much more of me in the future. Thanks for the awesome service you provide our city, and you guys do the best salad for the best price in town! :) Steve

I would eat here every day if I could! This is my new favourite place of all time. The breads are sooo fresh, and they use real meat (non of this processed stuff), and the meats are cooked to perfection. I recommend the New York Pork (add a strip of bacon as an extra), it has roast pork, onion jam, crumbled crackling, apple sauce - hmmm mmmm. My friend swears by the Obama BLT - comes with 3 layers of bacon, lettuce & tomato, mayo, mustard.
Pricing is reasonable.
Parking can be a bit of an issue during peak periods. But it is worth the hassle!

I enjoyed New York Deli on new Regent St, so was happy to see it moved in 500m from my door. And well within walking distance of a group of friends various offices, thus an ideal working day lunch meeting spot. just beware they get very busy at peak times, so timing is everything.
beautifully cooked meats, generous amount of fillings, tasty condiments/sauces and great bread. all in all a great sandwich.
Nice space with good use of natural light and clean lines. One of the best sandwich places I've been to in Christchurch.
