Review Bishop Brothers Public House - Christchurch

From the moment we walked in we were taken by the warm and friendly greeting. The place is spacious and comfortable. It’s easy to hear conversation at the table. Very modern and tidy decor. First time here, and pleased with our “find”

Bishop Brothers Public House an overall brilliant dining experiance with a few small hiccups. We started with the Baked Ciabatta Loaf which was very heavy on the garlic in the best way possible. The restaurant was clean and had a good atmosphere and the staff were absolutely delightful to deal with. We ordered the Beef cheeks in a ragu which was pleasantly prepared with some of the most tender beef I have ever enjoyed and a hearty serving size. The 300-gram Flintstone Ribeye – $35.00 was great value for money and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The guide in the menu detailing the temperatures and colour of the cooking range was a brilliant addition that helps eliminates any concerns of the steak not being cooked exactly how you like it. It was cooked perfectly with a warm red centre and the mushroom sauce that was paired with it was creamy and delicious. The duck fat smashed potatoes and the buttered vegetables were both some of the best I have had. The shoestring fries that were listed on the menu unfortunately turned out to be steak cut fries and were so over seasoned they were unfortunately inedible. We finished the night with a slice of passionfruit cheesecake which was sadly a huge let down. It appeared to have not been mixed properly as it was full of white lumps. It was so tangy and sour that we couldn’t even get halfway through it. Despite the sour taste left in our mouths at the end of the meal it was not enough to ruin what had otherwise been an exquisite meal. Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to Bishop Brothers.

Great food great service great prices, a good meal as u would expect from the public houses in the Christchurch area, they definitely don't give u a small meal for the price u pay ! And it was nice and tidy very spacious and as usual very friendly and helpful staff 👍 would highly recommend a visit.

We knew this place through grabone and this place is definitely good for dinner. With the grabone voucher, the price is soooo good as you only pay $40 for the $80 voucher. I am always a steak lover, and I have to say the Ribeye is soooooo good with good size 300g and choice of two side dishes! Yum yum food~

The man on the phone and chef were very lovely and patient when I asked about vegan options today. They went out of their way to communicate what options I could have which I really appreciate. Everyones meals were huge. Our waitress Sakura was an absolute gem. She was so friendly and professional at all times. She was very efficient and served many tables on her own. You're a star Sakura. Thank you so much for making our family dinner special : )

First time here, we're newish to the area and have been looking for a good value local. The staff were incredibly friendly, we were able to bring our little doggo who they also tended to and the food was wonderful and amazing value. Think this is the new spot for us. Thanks so much guys. :)

Chilled Pub environment with a comfortable dining area. Live TV, gaming machines and the rustic wall decorations contribute to an authentic ambience. The Pizzas are great! Very cheesey and reasonably big - you won't go home hungry. -1 ⭐ as vegetarian options yet no vegan options are given.

Satisfied with the food and service! We ordered the pan fried salmon $34 - it was cooked tender and the roast vegetables were delicious too. We were there on Monday evening. The waiter serving us was very attentive and offered wonderful service!

Absolutely terrible service, and extremely rude staff. These idiots allow you to book when they have a function on, so when you arrive they can't seat you. When you purchase a GrabOne voucher specifically for that meal it is extremely irritating.

Also the owner Mark Pearce is very combative on Facebook when giving them a low review, the guy has no idea how to run a business.

Had salmon eggs Benedict. Was okay nothing great to rave about. Was served on buns and not much with it just slaw and salmon, eggs, sauce on bun. Below average. For the price I paid for it? I'd rather go to maccas and get me a fillet o fish combo and will be satisfied.

Bishop Brothers is an over-priced restaurant and bar. Guessing food is over-priced to cater for those at the bar. Ordered the chicken and bacon wrap which was pretty good but would not pay that much again.

So we used to love this place when it was Little Italy. It wasn't the greatest place, but the staff were friendly and the meals were simple but generally well made. Unfortunately, I can't say that that reputation has carried through into the new renovated Bishop Brothers. It looks absolutely fantastic, the renovations are great and it looks like a modern yet rustic tavern that could be in Central Christchurch. Unfortunately for myself and my family, that's all kind of where it ended. One of the issues with the previous place is that you could smell smoke emanating from the smokers on the pub side of the bar - this hasn't changed at all unfortunately. You were also sheltered from the pokie players before, whereas this time, you can actually see them as you dine.Despite this, the place looks great. Seating is spread to give people plenty of room and they're comfortable. Staff were generally pretty attentive throughout and apart from a few questionable acts, I thought they were friendly and attentive. The food was the let-down unfortunately and not in just 1 way but with all our meals, when dining for lunch one day.We had chicken wings to start with. These were less grilled and quite soft-skinned as if entirely cooked in a microwave. Unfortunately some of them were also very, very pink on the inside towards the bone. Something you don't really discover till you have bitten into it. Biting revealed not just the bone to be pink, but also some of the flesh. Pink enough for me to warrant concern and because there was a sauce, very difficult to see if there was actual blood - so we opted not to eat anymore. Unfortunately, we'd already bitten into some of the undercooked chicken. Now we did mention the pinkness of the chicken to the waitress. Move on we thought, so on to our mains. My wife ordered a Beef, Bacon and BBQ Burger that came armed with a 200gm burger pattie. I ordered the Camembert and Chicken Melt. The pattie in my wife's burger would have been lucky to have been much more than 100gms and the bacon was burnt. Meanwhile the Camembert & Chicken melt was ok, except it had far too much Cranberry Jelly and the toasted ciabatta that it is served with was incredibly stale, so much so that I didn't eat much of that at all. All of these we mentioned to the waitress. In fact, I went up to the counter to complain about the size of the pattie in my wife's burger and she stated that she herself thought it was a bit small ... which raises the question, why not send it back at that point rather than annoy your customers? We did get a free kids meal out of it, but that doesn't really compensate you for food. The place has won some sort of beef award in the past, but can't cook bacon? A real shame because the place looks great. Maybe it was an off day, but it wasn't particularly busy. In any event, not the most pleasant experience I've ever had in a dining establishment.
