I’m a regular here after my first experience here over 3 years ago… it’s got such a unique feeling, 70’s decor look and the food and atmosphere are amazing. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The live music on Friday nights is outstanding

Cute little bar/restaurant. The fondue is definitely worth the price. They also have a friendly staff that was very attentive. I would like to come back when it is a bit busier but we enjoyed the food and drinks all the same.

This place is truly AMAZING! The food is delicious, especially the cheese fondue. The staff are always very attentive and cheerful ! Their Belgium biscuit cocktail is definitely a must try. Highly recommend !!

This place has a great 70s vibe and decor along with music to match. We tried the fondo with cheese sauce and we got the gravy as well. Awesome feed veg, beef, prawns, chicken and pork belly all cooked just right and good size. Great place even had mulled wine in a crockpot on the bar. We will be back for the desert fondo.

Wandered in while trying to find somewhere to eat, everything else was closed. An amazing surprise. The fondue was brilliant and the staff were great! The bar vibe was great too.

We have been here a couple of times in the last month and it has been fantastic each time. We had a fondue and it was amazing, what a great idea. We went for beats by bingo too and that was a brilliant night. Great staff, awesome cocktails epic food. Well done, we will be back.

My first fondue experience and it did NOT disappoint. The service was fantastic even with a staff member down. Will definitely be back!

We were very lucky to be welcomed by the owner and were given a nice small tour for the place. We got a chance to try out table shuffleboard near the entrance. I do recommend the dessert "Chocolate fondue pot". Love the high view and open area. Its a good place to try at different times of the day. Sunday is board games day.

We called with short notice on a Saturday night, for six of us, and even though they were very busy, they accommodated us extremely well! We had a drink first and were then shown to a great booth table, where we were encouraged to try their famous fondue. I could not recommend this higher, plenty of food and absolutely delicious! We all had a fantastic night and will definitely return again. Thanks Danny and team, you were great hosts.

Had another brilliant night out at the Retro, been a fan since they started out over in Addington. Food is always great, and good drinks selection. Great vibe.

I was at Retropolitan for a 50th a couple of weeks ago and had a fabulous time - the food was amazing (especially the pork bites!) and the service was awesome. Highly recommend 😊

Salads (halloumi & pulled lamb) were both great and my friends loved their angus burgers with potato skins and portions were big enough (as you would expect for this price). Service was very basic and quite slow though.

Awesome food! Danny, Sheryl and the team are great hosts. We (like to think) we go here all the time. They are also really great at catering to GF / Coeliac options which makes it very easy for us. Thanks guys!

Wanted to try this place as I love themed restaurants. We went for lunch on cafe side and ordered an eggs bacon Bennie and the chicken burger with potato skins. When the meals came out they looked great I had to cut the burger in half as was a bit of a hand full in the end had to use knife & fork to eat it. On eating this burger discovered it was full of hair fibers and was completely disgusted, I tried to get wait staff attention but had to wait as where to busy talking to each other. When the wait staff did come over I told her what I had in my food and had to point it out she agreed and said sorry. When I went up to pay the counter staff had no idea what had happened with the meal and did not seems to care. They didn't charge me for the meal which was a given anyway. But the fact that the chefs/owners where there and did not seem to care either was not very good customer service at all. In fact the dirty cloth the chefs had in the kitchen was enough to make me want to be sick. This cloth was used to wipe hands, benches& God knows what else. I will not be going back very dirty and very poor customer service.

So trying to love this place. The decor is great and fantastic vibe. However, have found the food fairly average and expensive on our four visits. Tonight took the cake. Ordered chicken Maryland, because they were out of salmon, and what a disappointment it was. Tasted like it had been in the freezer for a year, and no coating or flavor on it. No one asked how our meal was so we've just gone home and probably won't visit again.

What a cool place. Awesome music. Retro decor, complete with the old electrolux at the door. My meal was exactly what I wanted, and tasted divine. Service was great and I would recommend this place to all my friends if they lived in Christchurch. . But if you ever visit then look for the Retropolitan, you won't be disappointed.

Had a really fun evening here tonight. The welcome from the owner on arrival was almost as warm as the roaring wood fire. We started our night in the bar, admiring the nostalgic decor over a couple of Cassel and Sons beers. We shared an entree of the prawn cocktail - well presented with 7 large juicy prawns and a tangy but light dressing. Then came the cheese fondue in a pot we chose ourselves. The fondue itself was very cheesy with a hint of garlic and not too heavy or greasy. The accompanying meats were well cooked and spiced, with the jerk chicken supplying a nice heat and the crispy pork adding a good crunch. We ended the meal with a banana split, which was elevated with fried cinnamon dusted bananas. A couple of games of shuffleboard later, to settle who payed the very reasonable bill, and two very satisfied customers are looking forward to our next visit - and a chance to try some of the other retro dishes on the menu. Really good value and a great atmosphere.

2 friends and I decided to go for breakfast today. We arrived at 9am only to be told that breakfast isn't until 11am on a week day and 9am on the weekends. Since when has breakfast been at 11am, that's either lunch for brunch. When I stated to the staff that their website and their menu didn't say anything about a start time she just said to me that she has no control of the website. They have an open time of 8.30am and breakfast until 3pm, so wouldn't you think that going at 9am you should expect to buy breakfast. Needless to say we didn't stay and we certainly won't be going back again either

Very cool place and lots of interesting things to look at, but was quite disappointed with the service. Although the staff were polite we waited far to long to be acknowledged and offered a table, so we just stood there awkwardly not knowing if we should go ask the bar staff or what to do. Food was good and came out fast but just a bit expensive for what it was. All in all worth the visit but probably won’t go back.

My new absolute favourite place! Incredible food, great service and the retro concept is so cool. Both the cheese fondue and the chocolate fondue are to die for and I cannot wait to go back!

Very attentive and friendly waiter. First class service! Tasty starters- pork belly bites and garlic bread. Delicious mains- chicken Maryland, vege main of the day and beef cheeks- all were rated highly by the table. Was great to share a fondue dessert, the perfect amount between the four of us and a good way to end the night. Cosy environment and we loved the lampshade decor! Well done Retropolitan and many thanks to our waiter, we will be returning! Five stars!

Went here for a function, we paid $700 for 70 people. The venue was good however the food was average. We asked for enough platters for 70 people however they charged us $5 per item of food rather than for the price of a platter. Which resulted in about 10 platters total, which was not sufficient for 70 people. Everyone left hungry. I think this is unacceptable for people who are coming in and spending money on drinks etc very disappointing

Very disappointing. Service very poor, no greeting on arrival, simply shown to our table with orders taken in due course. Had run out of Speights Gold Medal ale, no Brioche bun and no substitute offered for garlic bread. Three of our four meals arrived lukewarm, not asked how we enjoyed our meal. Asked what chef's dessert special was, although waiter promised to come back, never did and were not given opportunity to choose desserts. Left with no desire to return.

I think the food is good , some dishes better than others and fairly priced - again some dishes better value than others but I’ve been trying a lot of different places and I think it’s great. I’ll be back . Great cafe and I like the outdoor bar area on a nice day ...

What a great wee place! Super friendly as stuff, food was pretty yummy. Will definitely be back!
