Review The Grand Cafe - Christchurch

I went there for a buffet dinner. The staff are very polite and helpful. They explained where all the food stations were. Basically they have a soup, salad, seafood, cooked food, roast meat and ham, pasta and dessert section. There wasn’t much variety in food but what was there was of pretty decent quality and after going through and trying all the stations I was very full. The price was 38$ pp. We went on Thursday and got a one dollar deal for soft drinks. If you want 10% discount, head over to the casino which is right next door and sign up for a “player club” member card.

Good quality for money, got the buffet all you can eat! $20 and good selection. Good service

Went for our anniversary Nov 11th and had a beautiful meal and great service topped off with special cupcakes. Highly recommended for special occasions or regular visits menu is reasonable and appetising.

Had the buffet breakfast and it was delicious. I highly recommend it. Make sure you get yourself some of the sweet waffles and perfectly cooked hash browns. We went for a Birthday Breakfast and it was the perfect location for an enjoyable and filling way to start the day.

High tea. One of the few places left that offer a proper three tier high tea of savouries, scones and sweets in town. And we're not talking just any old pastries and sandwiches, these are quite finely crafted and more imaginative than most. Bookings are essential. The price is very reasonable and good value. It would be nice to see the staff get better uniforms than t shirts though.

Great Service, staff very friendly. Food was excellent, but need a few signs to let you know the names of some of the food selections. Very helpful lady on reception. Great value for money, would highly recommend a visit but best to book at this time of year.

All tables covered with white table cloths plus linen servietts. Service was excellent. Selection of food would satisfy every person who dines there. Top value for the cost of food. The staff where attentive until restaurant closed. This was my first visit to The Grand Cafe.. I recommend this cafe to any body who has not tried the food

Grand cafe delivers a buffet meal which I personally feel could be better for the money. It offers a good selection but needs that bit more. Seafood and desert could be better. Of course being at the casino has its advantages of you like to have a wee gamble.

Mums Day Out was Fabulous The High Tea was fantastic and we were really impressed with the selection. Taste sensation was an explosion in the mouth with the perfectly formed art forms on a plate Customer service was second to none and could teach others how to make guests feel special We are thinking of another reason to go again Thank you for a great day out.

Nice enough. Good value. Good choice. Not like pre-quake in Gary Miller's Executive Chef days there when you felt like you were in a Las Vegas Casino restaurant with whole salmon and beef fillets coming out on the hour. But that was when they were still getting funny money from the horse racing and training royalty.

Fabulous place for a buffet meal. Beautifully presented food. Not like other restaurants that are noisy and crowded. Well worth a visit.

Great food. A very good selection and the service was good. The restaurant was just a bit crowded and noisy. Pleasent evening.

Awesome. Eat as much as you like buffet for $39 and the food was brilliant! Drinks not expensive either, just regular bar prices but will def give back for the buffet!

My work team had our xmas lunch at Grand Café. Staff were lovely & the food was topped up for us when everyone arrived. I'd be happy to go back there. Haven't been there in years as last time was bad.

Good food. Loved all the lovely selection of desserts, and the soup tasted nice as well. Would wish it had more mains option.

The worst lamb shank ever. The smell was awful as the waitress put the plate down. The meat on the bone tasted like straight out of a can. 24hr slow cook dried out the meat and not enough sauce to save that.
Guess that is why it is so cheap. As all the quality of food has been sacrificed.

Last Sunday I went to the casino for my dads birthday and I have only been to the breakfast buffet twice now and I love it! I really enjoyed the breakfast buffet as it is affordable and worth the money. The buffet is about $25 I think, but it is cheaper at $20 if you have a casino membership card which costs nothing. If you want to apply for a membership card just bring a photo ID along with you. My favourite and most enjoyable part is the hot drinks buffet machine as you have hot chocolate and other types of coffee which comes together with the entire buffet. The breakfast buffet also caters to vegetarians and those who can't eat gluten products. The best thing about the breakfast buffet is that there are more products there than inside my kitchen!

Best value breakfast in Christchurch BAR NONE! Service is as you'd expect. Have been for evening meals a few times. Not so impressed with the food. If after a quick and reasonable feed then try the Monza bar. Overall value for money, the fare is ok, the environment is fine and staff are very good at their jobs.

Went there tonight as a group of 15, meals we got were around $30 each with vegetables as extra for $7-50. Every meal was bland and the side veges were bland. Myself I ordered lamb rack and have to say it was pretty below average. Would not recommend for a meal at all and the fact the meals are expensive just adds to it.

Went to the Grand Cafe last night for fine dining. It was anything but fine dining! I got the lamb kofta and it wasn't good at all the meat was very dry and no dressing for the salad also there was egg and anchovies in the salad which was not stated in the menu. My partner got pork belly and for $32 you would expect a decent amount it was very small and nothing special. Could have done a better job at home. My friend got fish in chips the chips were undercooked. As a matter of fact all of our hot chips were undercooked and not salted. I will not be back and I do not recommend this place at all. Waste of money. The service was lovely though ;-)

We went to the Grand Café for New Years Day lunch. The restaurant was fully booked but we had a booking so were seated fairly quickly and menu's and water provided. Drink orders were taken with the meal order. Both husbands had the set menu on offer of breads, roast and dessert. Commented that the roast was unusual in that there was salad on the plate swimming in the gravy???? The wives ordered from the main menu and all I can say is that my meal was delicious. I had the seafood cocktail (prawns, crab, crayfish etc), the lamb cutlets and a platter of desserts. The entire meal was absolutely delicious. Only problem was that there were no further offers of drinks or of coffee after the meal and as the restaurant was half empty by that time there were plenty of staff available???.

Had the lamb roast. It had been roasted, and roasted, and roasted. Dry as a the Sahara Desert. Outside was almost burnt and the inside a dark grey. Covering it with a really dark sauce doesn't hide the fact that it was over cooked. But at least it still had taste. Mains took a while to arrive and most were starting to cool (Heat the plates people).

Meals are reasonable sizes and very good price. Staff seemed atentive yet not interested.

Was dining in today with my husband with their lunch deal 3 course meal $19 and food was terrible. From the entree of baked bread which totally old.
Bread that was served and chewy seems like its been days old bread now comes the msin which is the Asian chicken noddke and my husband got the kaikoura salmon which is alright but the noodle it taste yuck or tasteless its llike boiled water with noodle on top and some slices of chicken and vegetables. It was really dissapointing and the dessert not good at all. It's not worth $19 meal and it;s totally not worth the wait. It just ended up a very dissapounting date with my husband. kfc is way worth more than the food they are serving and imagine the price massively expensive with no taste at all

We used to dine at the restaurant at least once a week before it changed after renovation and from buffet to a la carte. I have been once since it changed and never again. The food was not cooked properly (microwaved potatoes and then browned)and unappetizing. I liked the buffet so when they change the chef and go back to buffet I will go back. Expensive too. I have heard many others say the same thing ie they do not like the food and will not go back until it changes back to the original buffet.

Dined last night at the Grand Cafe and must say I was very impressed. The refurbishment is amazing, place looks really cool.Great to see they have gone a la carte, great selection of options, my salmon was perfect.

Very friendly service from our waitress and great recommendation on the wine matching.

We'll be back for sure.

I dined at the Grand cafe and the refurbishment looks fantastic, and the new menu is delicious. We were so impressed with the service and the ambiance. We dined in the lounge area, which had a lovely intimate feel. The team at the casino has obviously put a lot of thought and effort into this total turnaround of a restaurant.

We had dinner at Grand Cafe in the casino and the place looks awesome but then the rest is crap like the service and food.I would never ever suggest this restau to any of my family & friends. It is very disappointing.Waitress does'nt have any idea about the whole part of the menu and she was very unsure of what she's talking about.I mean as a waitress u should know whats on the menu, the entire part of the menu as every other restaurant i have been to.Giving a wrong info about the menu nothing is precise at all and serving a very cold bread and it is crap.Even the bread that u can buy in pakNsave is even better then that bread and then asked the waitress to heat it up a little bit and she answered back if we want it in the microwave?how is that?then she took the bread and toasted it like your eating a cracker. The Mains is no good!Pork well done!!glasses does'nt looks clean full of white spots..Lastly the payment mode!If you cant accept credit card on that day becoz your having troubles about it or what so ever dont you think you are supposed to advice the customer about it.I think every customer should know what mode of payment you can only accept in that circumstances!!!!AND i think as a front desk person you should be more polite and accept that you were at fault in that matter!!!Oh well its a learning experience.

I know the "Grand Cafe Restaurant" at the Casino since winter last year and i enjoy it every time.
But i know that the Restaurant is under a new manager since that time. The breakfast buffet is always great, well presented and tasteful - as the dinner buffet is as well. The service staff is friendly and offer service to high standard. I am sure the previous reviews are correct but the restaurant has improved a lot. As I have heard there will be a refurbishment of the whole restaurant this year.

Dined here on a Friday night. For $38.00 per head I expected more. Choices very average; speed of replacing empty dishes poor; cleanliness of servery area’s poor; waiting staff good. Nice decor, but overall disappointed. Breakfast is much better option in my opinion.

food was bland, looked as though it had been sitting around a long long time. deffinately not value for money. waitstaff were friendly but remove your plate before youv'e even finished your meal. never going back.
