Review Red Elephant - Christchurch

Rio Rivan
Great tastes of Thai food, not too spicy. Nice decoration and great service. All waiters were polite and helpful. Sometimes there is a traditional thai dance performance with music.

Very good Thai food similar to what I've had on my many visits to Thailand. Staff was courteous and charismatic. Apparently, the old chef came back several months ago and rescued this place. They do karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights.

Had an excellent meal here yesterday. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, incredibly tasty meal. We shared the sizzling black pepper beef and the roast duck red curry. Both were incredible, best Thai red curry I've ever had!

This a SERIOUSLY a hidden gem. This food is better than any other Thai food around! Don’t let the location be a deterrent! The restaurant is tucked away and very quiet. The decor is beautiful and the service is really great and friendly! Above all else, the food is INCREDIBLE!

My wife walked down from where we're staying for 2 nights in Christchurch and got us takeaway as I'm in a wheelchair. She had chicken in peanut sauce and got red chicken curry for me as can never remember whether I have green or red (milder). I think I'm glad she accidentally got red because it almost as hot as the green I normally have at home. We each found our meal mouthwateringly delicious - mine was one of the best I've ever had!!! 👍👍👍

Fun restaurant, caters more specifically to large groups and can BYO wine. Has karaoke some times. Fine is OK, nothing special but pleasant. Has a nice atmosphere

Good service and brilliant environment. Highly happy as it wasn't my type of scene. I was under dress lol but love the food style and and the drinks. Thumbs up...

We had a delicious lunch. Two red curries, one with beef and one with chicken. We had the fresh spring rolls and curry puffs for entree. It was delicious. Thank you.

Worst ever dining experience! Went in there on Wednesday with four other friends. The menu did not have much of a selection when compared to other Thai restaurants in CHC. My friend ordered for a dish requesting for 'extra hot' (spicier than Thai hot) and I ordered for a dish (Chili and Garlic stir fry- chicken) 'Thai hot'. Surprisingly both dishes ended-up been sweet and not hot and/or spicy at all. It was like eating sugar syrup with vegetables and meat. My dish although was charged extra for the chicken, I had to swim in the dish in search of chicken - there were no more than 5 or 6 strands of shredded chicken in it. The dish although was a stir fry, it was more like a soup; lots of liquid which was so so sweet and oily. The portions were so small irrespective of the exorbitant prices, especially when compared to other Thai restaurants in town. The food didn't taste anything like Thai food either; no fragrance and tasteless. Service was terrible too; we had to stay in the counter for a good 5-6 minutes to pay the bill and there was no one although we kept ringing the bell. Totally disappointing and of course I will never ever go back again.

Service was poor - the staff had no idea how the menu worked. We were forced to have a set menu with a group of 32. The waitress kept changing her mind about what the menu meant. We were left thoroughly confused. One response to a question was "I don't know, nobody orders the soup - I just know about this dish". We were a group of 32 - one would assume the set menu for 'for 4 or more people would apply'. No - it became clear that each couple was treated as a separate set menu at the higher price. We were told we couldn't order from the regular menu because the group was large, then got charged the higher set menu price of $32 per head even though our group was 'more than 4 people'. The food took ages to come out. People still hadn't had entrees and some had already finished mains. You want your group to be eating at about the same time, so people aren't finished their meals before others have even received entrees. The food was really bad. I'm a big Thai fan, and I have sampled just about every Thai joint in town. This was my first (and last time) at Thai Red Elephant. The Tom Yum was Tom Yuk - it didn't even look or taste like Tom Yum. It was a very strange colour and consistency. The green curry was so bland I wasn't even sure it was a Thai curry. I could have made better myself at home. Poor service. Bad food. Over priced for the poor quality of the whole experience. Won't be going back.

Really disappointed with your system for ordering online and having food delivered. After ordering, a woman rang and said our meal could not be delivered. Did we want to pick up or cancel our order? We asked where the restaurant was located as we know of 2 red elephants. She replied by saying we wanted to cancel our order. We said we didn't want to cancel and asked what street it was on. She gave the same response. We then said we would pick up and would the delivery fee be refunded. She gave the same response yet again so we did cancel our order at that point. She said the money wouldn't show up in our account for a few days. We ended up getting our Thai food elsewhere so essentially spent $80 on takeaways that night. Really unhappy customers. Needless to say we won't be back.

Best thai I've had in Christchurch since moving in july. We got it delivered, it was fast and piping hot. So tasty! Rice serve was ample for one large meal, I suggest getting extra rice for left overs (if you manage to keep some) beautiful green curry, so tasty and great curry puffs

We have really enjoyed our evening tonight. From the moment we walked in, staff were friendly and welcoming. They bought colouring pencils and paper over for our young daughter. The Thai dancing was an extra special touch, which we all enjoyed especially Miss 3. Food was flavoursome, just right portion size and good value for money. A lovely night out for our wedding anniversary dinner- thank you.

Food wasn't bad but the staff were incredibly rude to us. We'd barely walked in the door & we were told that we had to watch our alcohol intake. Never experienced anything like this at a BYO restaurant before. We were made to leave early after one of the staff members made one of our guests very upset. Won't be coming back here again.

For a friends 40th birthday dinner, booking for a large group made over a month in advance and we were advised they were licensed, but also BYO. The quality of the food was ok, a solid 6/10. Unfortunately from the moment we walked in... the staff were rude, the service was poor, food delivery was poor, and we did contemplate leaving and going to a different restaurant. Also during a conversation with the door security, it was clear he had a poor understanding of the liquor licensing act. Unfortunately I can not recommend this establishment, and I will not be eating there again.

Perhaps I'm the only one here with the weird feedback. Went there with friends yesterday, booked online so we've been given a table already reserved for us. The staff was very customer oriented and the food was good too. The only problem we found was, the dinner furniture's spacing. The gap between chairs and table wasn't standard. The chairs are all fixed so you can't move them forward. All the chairs in one pot are attached so if somebody will try to lean over, the whole row of chairs will lean automatically. Also, many of the chairs' armrests were broken too.

My husband and I ordered our entree , the entree was awful spring rolls hard and dry , waited half hr for that to come out, then the restaurant filled up , we were waiting for our meal , and staff started serving meals to the other guests we complained , staff said they had phone ordered , we were unimpressed waiting a hr for our meal , finally mine came out 10 mins later hubby's came out , we complained and they gave us a gd discount . Never again will We go there.

Food was good. We were craving for some spicy food after 8 days in NZ with steaks and burger etc. hit the spot. Did not see any other gusts however during our visit on a Wednesday. Stewardess was lovely and helpful. But think she was not correct about the dinner packages for 2 which the explanation she provided was confusing. Overall good food.

The staff did not have a problem serving patrons who were totally smashed as they walked in the doors. Nor did they move a finger to remove the seven very large girls with glasses of wine sitting on the loos. Staff ignored our requests to get the situation in hand. Came close to calling the police -these people should be closed down. Plastic tables, two? maybe three floor staff- would do better at a K Rd food truck at 3am.

Didn't have a great time at this place. I have tried better thai food. I think they can do better!
Ambience was OK-2.5/5..
Service -3/5
Food-2.5/5

We had a great time on Friday night. The staff were great and the food was delicious. The food was also very efficient and staff ensured that all meals were correct

The bouncer on the door and a plentitude of signs advising that a $7 (and one bottle pp maximum) corkage fee applies, suggest this is less a restaurant and more a booze barn This perception is furthered by the most basic of Thai menus. It is fully priced - the menu showing on this site is now 30+% more expensive.

The food was boring. This was the stodgiest Phad Thai I've confronted, so so so ... bland. The green curry too was set at rest home level flavourlessness.

Shortly after nine an older guy starts playing keyboard to support the karaoke machine (wtf?) ...and oh hello, it's open mic time. It's kinda dumb and fun but we quit when our colleague was randomly abused as a "n****r" by another patron. That abuse wasn't the bar / restaurants fault, but it is that kind of place.

One of the worst Thai food I tried. Was very expensive. They changed there menu... Didn't update the website. Staff very ignorant. Won't be going there ever again
