Review China Wok Restaurant - Christchurch

Karl Marks-Cockett
We visited The China Wok straight after eating at another restaurant and walking away from there still feeling hungry. So we didn’t order as much as we would normally at a Chinese restaurant but what we did have was delicious and great value. Plenty of people dining at the same time, a great atmosphere. This is our second visit here, definitely recommend visiting. Looking forward to trying the fish next time.

Truly authentic chinese flavor and experience as whole, including the same disengaging and borderline rude service you’d expect from many restaurants in China, and the service is slow, but consider the customer volume at that time, I guess is kinda understandable. The food quality, however, is the next level, it very much resembles the real taste of China, especially the North and Southwest, particularly their exquisite noodles that are absolutely hand made and different from everyone else in town, so darn good! The fish, is okay, nothing too especial.

the beef with chilli bowl dish i ordered was good in flavour but felt the beef was not soft as it should have been. i spoke to a gentleman on the phone as they didnt have the dish in their uber menu. he was excellent. was very patient and understanding and made sure i got what i ordered. really nice people to order from.

China Wok Restaurant is an absolute gem. Authentic dishes, it's cheap and cheerful and always full (when I've been there anyway). Every dish I've had has been delicious! Highly recommend.

This place serve really good Chinese food. One of their specialty is noodles. Their noodle is thick and super chewy. There are many variation of noodles you choose from. They have other great dishes as well. The portion size is huge for a great price.

This restaurant could be one of the best Chinese restaurant in Christchurch. They are really good on spicy food especially thier spicy roast fish. This time I try their new spicy and pickles chill roast fish, which is give me full of supise. Mostly the meal here would be a little be heavy on oil but this time not. Highly recommend !

This place was quite a find. It's not an auspicious name but the food is great, a very hearty style that appears to be from western China eg, Szechuan style. Very tasty and big sizes for a reasonable price.

The food here is extremely authentic and probably better than some of the places in Los Angeles where Chinese food is everywhere. We ordered the spicy lamb in pot, the wok fried chicken knees, and pig ears and they were absolutely delicious! The food came out quick and the owner was super friendly.

Best braised whole fish used to be the best in town. High chair available, quick service, easy ordering, good pork hock and noodles.

Fantastic hot spicy soup which lived up to it's name! I also loved the dumplings and my egg and vege noodle. Warm atmosphere and obviously popular with the locals. Will be back.

I had braised eggplant on rice. The eggplant was so tender and delicious.

Probably the most authentic Chinese food I have tasted in New Zealand. Most of the customers here are migrants. The price is really good for the amount of food. Highly recommended!

Was feeling hungry after a swim at Jellie Park. We (adults) were discussing lunch venue options and my 6 year old niece suggested one place nearby that serves hand-made noodles with quail eggs; I think it was the quail eggs that has sparked her interest - she likes tiny cute things LOL. Anyway, we ordered 2 portions of lamb noodle soup and a stir fried cumin lamb. They did not disappoint, the hand-pulled noodles had a great bite and the lamb broth a slightly peppery taste; even the kids had no problem slurping them. I found the pickled garlic quite interesting too. Cumin lamb was good and lean; not too oily. Service was good despite the busy lunch hours on a Saturday.

Was told 10 minutes pick up which turned into 25 minutes, dumplings soggy & chicken curry was thigh pieces which were grisly, fried rice was ok. Wouldn't recommend.

There were so many people inside we decided to give this place a go. It's great how they have a tray of condiments at each table with soy sauce, vinegar, salt, pepper and chilli sauce.

Top picks would have to be the noodles. The noodles are so smooth with a great texture. I cannot stress how well the noodles are made. The portions of noodles is generous. The noodle soup we got had a delicious broth with tender pieces of marinated beef.

The rice was piping hot and everything came out hot. Flavours were great, some of the dishes had a bit of a kick but it was a nice balance.

Service is quick and staff are friendly. Easy to find parking and place is neat and tidy.
