Review Chong's Restaurant - Christchurch

Eljas Hyyrynen
I had a proper meal of soup, lamb and rice. Note that rice/noodles are not included in the meal so order that separately ($2). Free wifi. Excellent kiwi juice, try it! It seems there are quite many Chinese restaurants nearby. This one is worth trying, the menu looks quite good and I got served well and fast.

Food at lunch was excellent and plenty of it.. Really happy with the meals. So much we went back. Place is little hard to find but well worth it..

This was our second visit, we were here a month ago and thought it was well worth repeating the experience. The food is good honest Chinese. Having read other reviews I fell it needs an uplift in its ratings. Maybe it has undergone a bit of a refurb in this time? Can’t fault the food or service.

We went there to get takeaway, the serviCe was great, but I find the food too sweet to my liking, the pan fried dumplings were so yummy though! Might be back to try other dishes

Didn’t read the reviews before I came. Glad I didn’t because I think they’re not very representative. I had a tasty meal here and the service was fine. Give it a go!

Surprisingly good. Seems authentic. Delicious dumplings and very friendly staff. It may not look like much, but worth a visit for a cheap and cheery dinner.

Been here lots. Staff are always friendly and attentive. Food quality is great and always fresh. Lots of haters in previous reviews. Ignore those!

was a bit nervous as I was the only one there, however the food was good and the service was brilliant, would certainly come back

Just your average Chinese restaurant. Nothing fancy. But the food was good

A very ordinary dining experience. If it wasn't clean, we'd rate it 1*. My wife & I dined here recently on a frosty Saturday evening. We had to leave our coats on as it was so cold. The decor is stark white & black - not at all inviting or relaxing. Our dishes were served on cold plates! It was hard to find the small bits of chicken amongst the thick layers of batter. We had asked about this, but the uninformed waitress didn't seem to know what batter was. Nor did she know anything about wine. Our vegetarian fried rice dish was quite nice, but that's all! Would not return.

Decent food. They refused to let us use the entertainment book voucher, despite the terms and conditions allowing us to. Only go if you’re not intending to redeem a voucher of any sort.

very good food, reasonably priced, too, and hot pot was a great experience

The restaurant was empty, just me and my partner and a family of four, who had most of their food by the time we got there. We only ordered one thing each and had to wait 45 minutes for two plates to come out. Not only that, but none of my veggies were on the plate as they were supposed to be according to the menu. I probably wouldn't have complained if the food was good. Not a satisfied customer and this is unacceptable smh! NEVER AGAIN!!

Hot pot was very tasty. Loved the spicy soup.

One reason I give it a higher rating is its location to the central Cathedral Plaza district at the main tram station. This is your basic Cantonese xiao chou style street cooking. Some of the dishes can be quite oily. The hot pot is apparently the specialty here, but I did not get a chance to try it. The fried dumplings were very nice, but the chicken/corn soup required chili sauce and soy to give it some ummph, as It had no flavour whatsoever. The noodles were OK. but not the egg noodles that you normally would get with chow mein, which was the combination fried noodles on their menu. A bit skimpy on the meat as well but nice flavour overall. It was nice to get a BIG cold Tsingtao to wash it all down however. I went in with no expectations and got an average Chinese meal. I will make an effort to try the hot pot next time.

OMG why do I have to ruin the day for my family by choosing this place????!!!! Any 12 year old can cook better food!!! I'd rather eat plain rice with soy sauce.

This didn’t have a wow factor. Nice enough place. Good value for money. Staff friendly enough. Nothing to brag about regarding the food, it tasted fine, tasty.

Best Chinese I've had in a long time, vege fried rice was perfectly seasoned and super fresh! Also had the spicy pork and it was amazing quality meat, would highly recommend

The best place for Chinese hot pot and BBQ, fresh ingredients and nice seasoning.

Reading some reviews is interesting as you can see how they get pissed off. If you have already noticed what Asians are eating there, why would you still order something like sweet and sour pork...

I am Asian and I never had anything else but hot pot and bbq there. And it never went wrong.

We ate here on our last night while staying at the Quest Apartments. I didn't even notice it at first due to the small shop front but was surprised by the space once we got upstairs.
There was 6 of us and we ordered Chicken & Corn Soup, 2 x Combination Fried Rice, Chicken & Cashew, Beef with black pepper on a hot plate and stir fried lamb with spring onion. They were ALL delicious and there was barely a crumb left! Beautiful flavours & really fresh. Not salty or fatty like so many Chinese restaurants these days. The staff were also very helpful and efficient. The only negative thing we could say is that they were unfortunately out of dumplings tonight.
In general, I'd highly recommend it! 👍🏼

Hold the salt!. Our first clue should have been what everyone else was eating in the restaurant. All the Asians were having hot pot, the non-Asians were eating meals from the regular menu. We ordered sweet & sour chicken, veggies, jellyfish, dumplings and hot plate lamb. All the dishes were too salty for our preference, especially the lamb dish.

I purchased a voucher for Chong's & went with a friend & his daughter & really enjoyed it :) I think without the voucher it is slightly on the expensive side of dining but the experience is definitely worth it. I only wish I'd got more vouchers!!! I will definitely be a return diner :)
