Review Cafe 218 - Christchurch

Cathy Smits
A beautiful cafe with lovely attentive staff. They are always so kind to my elderly Mum and myself when we are there. Always appreciative of their great service, coffee and food.

Our food was OK. The bagel could have been a bit more toasted and the amount of cream cheese was fairly minimal, and the butter for my toast was very cold and hard, otherwise it was all good. The Earl Grey tea was nice, a good flavour.

Very nice triple shot flat white and lemon roulade. Great service

This place has awesome freshly prepared food. Coffee was great as well. The service was excellent. Will be back again👍😁

Great drinks, berry smoothie was the best. Breakfast was very good, eggs poached perfectly and the best tomato sauce I've had in ages. Excellent service, all staff were helpful, prompt and made me feel welcome. A few other cafes in Christchurch could learn a lot from these guys. Will definitely be back.

Got the breakfast. Eggs were cooked to perfection! Bacon was yum. The big downfall was the sausages, they were nasty. All 1 texture and just tasted of herbs, they didn't belong on the breakfast at all

Excellent service. Gorgeous and well presented food. Very tasty. I had a caramelized onion beef roll and custard square. Both were very nice. I went and thanked the staff before I left. Been there before and will definitely be back. Thank you to your wonderful team.

Enjoy the best flat white in Christchurch, mouth-watering scrambled eggs, the most gracious friendly service and a charming warm atmosphere.

Cafe 218 ..... More than satisfied with the service from the staff here and the service during and after ordering. I booked a table at a time that fitted with my schedule, and even though we were early, it was ready ... Food selection is very good. Coffees great. It is a nice place to sit and relax in between shopping (or work meetings that some appeared to be doing). Excellent service and plenty of on-site parking. Recommend to others wishing for an excellent service..

Great place for a delicious coffee after a hard day of Moorhouse Ave shopping. Their all day lunches are very affordable and incredibly substantial. They also have a generous assortment of mouthwatering cabinet food. The staff are an absolute delight.

An amazing place to go when you want great coffee, service and food. The staff are always going above and beyond and it makes me mad when I see people leaving negative reviews when they're clearly just complaining for the sake of it as I have never had a bad experience here. The complete opposite in fact to the point I feel as though I'm treated as family and always welcomed. I see this with many other customers who also frequent 218. Keep up the great work team, don't let a small percentage of people stop you from being amazing!!!

The best carbonara in town! Delicious food and even better service! Staff were so lovely would definitely recommend coming here if you have the chance 💗

We returned to Cafe 218 after a couple of good experiences and can only assume it has changed hands.Dont reprimand your staff in front of customers, I felt embarrassed for them being treated like that and having to serve below average food.
My wifes meal came out 10 minutes before mine. The chicken panini by the waitresses admission was 2 days old, the chicken was dry, tough and tasted slightly gamey. The roast vegetables were overcooked. My fish was greasy, the chips were fine. We expressed our disappointment to the waitress and the waiter clearing tables, this was passed on to the chef we think but no one followed through with our complaint. In short, they have lost our business.

While clean and airy the food is the major let down.

My Bacon and eggs (expensive $17 - certainly not worth that!) got slammed down in front of me. Scrambled eggs were watery and runny pile. The bacon a oily, pale and under-cooked mess - grease running on the plate. One taste was enough to know that I wasn't going to eat the meal - let alone stay in the cafe.

The coffee too was disappointing - more like tar - yuck.

Whole experience left bad taste in the mouth and out of pocket - so disappointing after reading such good reviews.

I had a market breakfast.when you order they ask for your choice of egg that I went for poached. They weren't like poached as I expect !I would say they were hard! Bacon was really salty!
Coffee was good and staff were really nice and friendly.

Quite expensive but nice cafe for a lunch place. I saw none of the dishes listed here in pictures, and there was nothing Mexican about it. I had a spicy pumpkin soup for $14 which was nice, but not big enough for a lunch so ended up getting a sandwich as well.

I first went here after a review in The Press said it was worth a visit, and I loved the menu — was really different and tasty, and hand-on-heart I had the best version of a market breakfast I've ever had in my life. Now though...eek. There was this awkward moment when the manager yelled at her staff in front of customers (both cruel and unprofessional) and, sad to say, many of the things that made the menu exciting have gone and been replaced with the usual fare you can get anywhere. This place is just...blah.

Hands down the best cafe in Christchurch at present.

My wife ordered french toast and fries, the french toast was perfect, fries were "healthy looking" without all the normal grease,

I ordered Thai fish and chips, it would have to be the best meal i have had this year.

Price $54 with drinks and a scone to take away,

Great value, Great setting and great staff,

will come back defiantly.

The first time I came here I only had a mocha and didn't get to sample the food. The service was so excellent that I knew I had to come back. I can now say with confidence that the staff is wonderful and friendly and the food is yummy at a reasonable price.

The cafe is spacious and clean with a lot of light and a sleek modern design which just makes it a perfect place for a spot of coffee and a nice chat with some friends.

Also I saw a bird. Birds are cool.

Phoned ahead to book and call was taken by very friendly staff member. Unfortunately on arrival though the table had not been reversed luckily there was one available. Both ordered the Thai fish with kumara chips which arrived in good time. Nicely presented. My husband was happy with his however my fish and the kumara chips were slightly over cooked and just spoilt the taste. Finished the visit off with two lattes " in cups thank goodness" so hate the cafés that want to serve lattes in a glass which does not retain the heat.
