Review Portstone Nursery Cafe - Christchurch

Beautiful plants. On a wet day we'll worth a walk around undercover. Lots to choose from gifts, pots, plants, water features and a lovely cafe. Helpful cheerful staff. Competitive pricing. Opportunities to get the plant in that you are wanting....
Helen Clayton (Helennz)
Love visiting here. There are always new plants or other things to see in the shop. When you are done you can visit the wonderful Cafe on site.

They have everything you may ever need for landscaping , even hire out a landscaper. The plants are of high quality and very healthy . So many water features and compared with other garden centres, reasonably priced . We are travelling around NZ for 1yr in our motorhome and allways stop for a walk around at the garden centres, love it . Large cafe indoor and outdoor seating clean toilets. A large car park and some parking on the road side.

Love this place. Beautiful plants and in the store itself hard to just walk past all the gorgeous giftware. When you are done visit the cafe, but it might pay to reserve a table as they are very popular

Great place. Lots of plants and pots to choose and cheaper than other shops. Love the coffee shop too with the garden view.

Needed some hard to find plants which they had in stock, quick reply to email asking for information on the items required. Very impressed great helpful staff larger than I had imagined with large comprehensive range of gardening supplies and plants. Also, a cafe on site sadly didn't have time to check out - Cheers

My favorite garden center in Christchurch. I was very happy to finally obtain a Slipper Orchid. Supports local growers and wide variety. Very helpful staff!

What a great find! Great service - friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. A great selection of plants and pots. A lovely cafe inside, too.

Amazing service and such a beautiful garden centre with everything you could possibly need!

I wanted to buy a number of large pots to establish a herb garden and Leigh was fantastic. She curated a selection of large pots and sent me photos and pricing to make a selection. I live a long way away and on my next trip to ChCh I took my trailer and picked up my purchases. Very pleased with the quality and pricing, I was able to get exactly what I was looking for and order some grape vines and decorative trees for Spring.

So happy with my statues and pots, great place to shop. Well definitely be back 👍

Wonderful garden centre, plenty of variety of indoor and outdoor plants, helpful advice available from staff. Good selection of products to help increase your crops, as well as many different brands of seeds and bulbs are available. A great place to visit to find just the plant for your home or garden. If unsure then take time at Leeves for a coffee and a bite to eat before returning to the plant section.

I love going to Portstone Garden Centre because there is everything there that makes a visit worthwhile. We thoroughly enjoy the café, great food and friendly staff. I always find something if not a lot of plants to purchase, and then there is a great shop to explore. The 'staff'' all super friendly and helpful. I would recommend this garden centre to everyone.

Whoever made my mocha this morning was on point. Not easy to find good coffee round here. Milk was the perfect temp, and nice ratio of choc and shot. Friendly service. Thanks!!

Well worth the trip across town to visit Portstone Garden Centre. Such friendly staff, good selection of plants and the gluten free food selection at the cafe is delicious. Well done Chris and the crew at Portstone.

A 40 ish minute wait for two eggs and some still slightly frozen potato hash, no thanks. The "homemade" hash was obviously pre made, frozen and reheated, but not heated all the way through. The only happy staff members were the man taking orders at the till, who was trying his best to placate the customers in addition to us who had been waiting a long long time, and the girl making coffee who was lovely, despite being extremely busy and stressed without any support from the chefs or other staff. I felt sorry for the two front of house staff. Not going back.

Clean, pleasant, with an appetising selection of counter food. Apparently there is a menu, but I didn't see it. Automatic door and ramp make wheelchair access easy, though the tables inside are the kind with pedestal legs that make getting comfortably close to the table in a wheelchair difficult--weather permitting, next time I'd eat outside at one of the more traditional tables there. The outside space has water features and various other garden objects on display. Coffee was coffee (what can I say, we're not connoisseurs). Would happily return.

Went in for a coffee - person taking orders did not hear or remember my friends request for soy milk. Massive (and really unnecessary) argument with the owner ensued - my friend was happy to pay the extra 50c for soy that wasn't charged, but he just couldn't let go that a simple mistake was made. Such a horrible little man!

Also the dog was wandering freely between the garden centre, Cafe AND THE KITCHEN!!!!!

Wouldn't go back there if you paid me.

Always heard good things about this little cafe.

Service on the day was good although a lot of social chatter behind the counter whilst we were waiting to be served.

Coffees were up to standard. No spillage.

Wide selection of food and a menu (wasn't aware of the menu until we had sat down)

Ordered from the cabinet. I had a lasagne, which was heavy on the carrot - but still delicious. Good value for money. It would have been elevated to the next level if it came with a side salad.
My friend had the stuff kumara which also was presented well and it came with a side salad.
All in all enjoyable.
Clean and tidy..
Staff were friendly.
All up $30 for two meals and three drinks.

I have been to Portstone many times over the last year for coffee and food from the cabinet, It has always been good, though the service is often slow when the owner makes the coffee.
Last week I took 3 friends along and had to put up with an annoying tiny dog roaming freely around the cafe. This is unhygienic and dangerous, it didn't bite anyone but growled at a small child right behind me and startled me.
Add to this the one extremely rude server who brought out our coffee, minus the hot water for the two long blacks. When this was pointed out she snapped at us and said she only has two hands. Odd when the young lady behind her was delivering coffees with a tray (politely).
The dog plus rude attitude equal the end of my visits there, I'd recommend a better cafe nearby but don't know of any closer than the red verandah.

Went for lunch. The waitress, who I presume was the owner was rude, disrespectful and unaccommodating. It is the worst customer service I have experienced and left me feeling discriminated against as a patron dining alone. I had ordered lunch from a lovely service person, but after the rudeness of the owner, I asked for a refund and left without dining.
This is the second time I have visited; the first time the dog (that roams free around the cafe) growled aggressively at my 2yr old, while we waited in the line.

I had organised a coffee group to meet regularly there in the coming months, but will be taking our business elsewhere and recommend that the owner is considerate of others, in groups or alone in future and treat patrons with respect and courtesy.
