Review Burgers And Beer - Christchurch

Mixed review. THE CHIPS, omg best chips ever, so salty and yum! Iwi burger was a hit!! Big and yummy, the kids burgers were yummy and generous sized!! Voodoo was a bit sloppy but tasted pretty good, and then the Zodiac burger i got on a Gluten Free bun and unfortunately the whole burger was just soggy, tasteless and gross, there wasn't much pork and the pork had no flavour, some salt would of done it greatly! The onions and stuffing was just a mushy mess and tasted burnt, couldn't taste gravy, lettuce was all wilted from the heat (understandable) but was just a yucky burger. So apart from the Pork Belly Burger it was pretty good, maybe the team could look at a way at making it more flavourful. Thanks

Love all the burgers here! Especially the chicken ones, a lot of favour and they are big and filling!! Most people that work there are nice and have good chat. You can also get the app and check in 5 times to get free chips or onion rings, I'm happy they have kumara chips now and they are great!!! They complete the burger. Definitely recommend for any burger lovers

Popped in on my way to a birth, fantastic quick service, would give more than 5 stars for the service I received above and beyond. Great food.

It's a good place to take your kids and have a inexpensive burger and fries. I love its horror gimmick. Very cool.

Best chips and gravy in chch by far. The service is also insane, there’s a cowboy that works there and he’s the bees knees! Definitely the goat + thx for extra gravy you beasts

Guaranteed a great burger (and large) every time. The chips and gravy are great. Best of all is the friendly staff that give great service even when rushed off their feet. Only negative is the wait times some times but that's a minor and only occasionally

Quick service, nice big burger and chips. Friendly staff

Took the work crew out here last Saturday ( we are a rowdy fun bunch too!) group of 9 and boy oh boy were we impressed. Best burger I've probably EVER had, totally generous portions and the CHIPS if you think the burgers are good .....wait until you taste those. Nomnomnom! Only two people were on, all of our meals were served together fresh hot and just DELICIOUS. Thanks so much guys, we will be back! 🦄🙈❤️

Best burgers and chips of any gourmet burger place in. Christchurch. Good range of drinks too and reasonably priced. See Big AL's Food Reviews on Facebook for more details

Went with work friends, so there was 8 of us. We all got served delicious burgers at the same time and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The chips with gravy were especially good.

I normally rate Burgers and Beers a five star, however today they sadly only deserve 2 stars. Three of us went to try their breakfast menu this morning and we were all disappointed. The food serving sizes were abysmal....definitely not worth the price whatsoever. My breakfast was the least value for money of them all - a weird pancake/burrito type thing with a very small dash of Nutella (you could barely see it), half of a length wise sliced banana and I had to pay en extra dollar for a few small pieces of bacon. That was it. The only generous part of my serving was the maple syrup! Soooo not worth it! I don't know why you guys have bothered doing breakfast if you can't do it as well as your burgers. This is going to let your brand down badly :(

Worst burger I have ever encountered. I've actually never taken the trouble to complain about bad food at a restaurant before but I am compelled this time by what we were served up and because of the ridiculous waste of money. We had the fish and Iwi burger, the gf buns were stale, dry and rubbery the worst I've ever come across. the fish was like watery porridge and had absolutely no flavour, accompanied by some sad lettuce and why why why was the wasabi aoli sadly absent? The iwi was not much better, a dry burger and pattie with mush in between and again tasted below average. Sadly we got take away so couldn't return it but couldn't eat either. To be fair the kumera chips were nice, but honestly burgers and beers that food was a shameful waste of energy.

The best of humanity work here. Highly highly recommend as a good place to spend your money. The margarita slushies with a shot of vodka is the way to go anytime of day any night. Also the food is great.

The staff at colombo are always the coolest people! 20/10! Love coming back for good food and good chat! Whoever does the hiring is on point !

10/10. Bloody good buggers, and bloody good burgers! Great food, and excellent service. Don't go there too often but the guys remember my order from the time of before, all the same. Great yarns while waiting for the food, and hardly any wait at all at that. I don't normally write a review but really thought it was worth leaving some good feedback. Highly recommend.

Burgers didn't really taste like anything and the buns were cooked to a crisp which I didn't like. We got hot chips which seemed to be the last broken crispy ones left at the bottom of the chip bag... won't be raving about this place and won't be returning
Donna Ellis
Yum yum yum ,amazing service and even let me take my Chihuahua round the back so I could enjoy crispy chips and a nice cold beer with my pooch .Very helpful staff ,even taking the time to explain that they could take stuff out or add stuff in .I'll be back for a burger next time

Been to columbo st branch many times and can never fault the food, sometimes there's a bit of a wait but the service is top notch. Always been served with a smile especially by the lovely Molly. The chips & gravy are to die for.
Yonni Relf
I actually loved it. It was a good burger. I recommend going there.
Janine Wesley Bristowe
Best, best burgers out!!!! They had a 20m wait , they were worried about the wait but when you have burgers tasting like that!!!!! They shouldn’t have no worries at all
Chris McEvoy
Excellent burgers, chips and onion rings, oh and the beer was nice too! Would recommend to anyone.
Jessica Eastwick
The worse burgers we have ever had, horrible!!!! The chicken had huge lump of something in it everything about them was so disgusting one bite the rest in the bin what a waste of money
Jason van den Boomen

So it was Friday evening, order a burger at 6.40 pm, don't get it until 7.15pm! I get that it was Friday night but at no point was I told it may be a long wait. It was for only one burger. Service is service. And at that price I expect service.

Awesome food and customer service. Voiced my disappointment in the lack of options available for re-usable utensils and plates and got a wonderfully considerate response which was very receptive to embracing more sustainable business practices! Setting an excellent example for others in the hospitality industry.

Went here tonight. Both of us had a Pulp Fiction burger. Beef pattie, cheese, lettuce, pickle and royale sauce. My husband did not enjoy his Pulp Fiction - it was bland and just not exciting. I ate half of mine and took half home. To me it was very tasty and hot. I did ask for extra royale sauce to be fair so it was nice and saucey. My husband had the fries and gravy. Apparently they were very hot and delicious. The gravy was nice and thick and just stuck to the fries. It was a very rich, deep flavour for the gravy. He loved it. Coke in a can and a house wine in a warehouse glass. Not nice. Not sure I can rate the wine in a warehouse glass or coke in a can as it is a burger joint so that does not help rate the 3* score. Will go again for the burger with extra sauce. But not for the beverages.

Loved it! I had a chicken burger and it was so goood! And the chips and the gravy are just amazing! Customer service was great and we got our food pretty quick.

Friendly staff, nice and clean restaurant, stunningly crafted burgers! The Iwi burger with pineapple and Moroccan seasoning!! The chips are some of the best around!
Table For One
Came here late at night looking for something decent to eat, wasn't dissapointed! The burgers are massive and delicious, and you can't go past the chips with gravy either. Be warned though.... the food is messy so don't come here with someone that you're trying to impress. Even though it was late the staff were still alert and friendly, much more than I would be at 10pm. The decor is pretty neat, I love the retro tables and chairs.

I love the burgers here, delicious and great value for money.<br/>I've had both the Chicken Pig (chicken, bacon, avocado) and King Julius (chicken Caeser). I think the chips are a bit over-priced but they are tasty.<br/>My only issue is that even if you dine in the burger is served in a paper bag and is very messy to eat. Because of this I always get takeaway and eat it at home on a plate.
Free Trade Winds
It's a burger and beer joint, yeah the name is a fair clue.  Burgers are fast food.  The novelty here seems to be that they do fast food but really, really slowly.   Oddly, the pigeon English sales docket says, "Eat In Quick Service."  The place was mostly empty, yet we endured more than 45 minutes wait time from ordering to eating.  I suppose it gives them a captive audience to sell beer to... <br/><br/>I ordered "Peal Habour" (sic) - a fish burger named with some casual racism.  It offered little in a big, doughy and under-grilled bun.  It was especially little on the fish - a smattering of small pieces. The sauce claimed to be wasabi aioli.  It was void of any heat.  <br/><br/>The other order was King Julius - egg, chicken and bacon.  This is a combo that you have to work hard to screw up.  It was impressive that their  "already famous Caesar dressing" managed it though and all by itself.   Sickly with an odd metallic aftertaste.<br/><br/>You're paying $13.50 for their 'regular' burgers.  You'll get slow service and a burger that compares poorly to the bland multinational  offerings of BK et al.  They don't even do tap beer.
Eliza Cooper-Finch
Big tasty burgers, awesome onion rings, good price, chilled out, menu confused me a bit, would be better if it was written out/laid out more clearly for simple blondes like myself.

Literally it's my girlfriend's fav place not mine. 13.5 bucks for a tasty burger as big as her face, to her it is adorable. I have to admit the chicken pig one tastes really good. The only reason why I don't like it is because the burger is too big for me. While I don't have an alternative option when I come here to her company. And it always takes us too long to wait for the food.
Jeff Knaggs
Tasty burgers, chilled atmosphere. Don't go expecting a fine dining experience. You order at the bar and your number is called when your burgers are ready.
Victoria
I had one of the vegetarian burgers (cheese retro)  and it was pretty good. I will mention that I believe that they cook their fries in animal fat, so if you're a vegetarian watch out for that!

A lot of the previous reviews seem to expect this place to be some kind of four star restaurant. It's not, and you shouldn't expect it to be. This place is the gourmet equivalent of Burger King, and you come here for damn good burgers. And beers. The burgers are a decent sized meal on their own, and for $13.50 each it's not four star prices either. You don't get service (per se). You pay up front. You get your meal in bags. If you're nice, you put your rubbish in the bins provided.<br/><br/>Once you understand all this, most of the time these guys make the best burgers in Christchurch. Annoyingly, their beef patties tend to be a little less tasty than, say, Burger Fuel. But Burger and Beers have the great sourdough buns, and excellent adventurous flavours in their burgers. They're some of the most expensive, especially when you add in chips and a drink, but overall I'd say these are the best you can get.<br/><br/>They do make pretty nice chips too, and with the gravy, bravo. I'd avoid the onion rings as they are usually too salty and a bit greasy. I'd also avoid the Peal Habour fish burger. It tastes alright, but is often too soggy.<br/> <br/><br/>2017 update: The prices have remained the same, so they're now cheaper than half the Burger Fuel menu and significantly better. Consistency has increased in my opinion. Bravo.

We went to Burgers &amp; Beers tonight as my partner bought a grab one voucher "Two Super Bugger Burgers for $18".<br/><br/>We were quite excited as it looked different to other places. We didn't mind the self service however it still has to come with a smile.<br/><br/>It was very empty in there so we sat down and waited for our Burgers. Surprisingly they came in paper bags instead of plates. As soon as we took the burgers out of the bag we were disappointed. They didn't look appealing at all and there was not 320 grams (as stated on the menu) of meat in there. <br/><br/>It was a very sloppy, hard to eat and flavorless burger. We were glad we picked up the two for one deal of grab one, we would of never paid $18 for this burger.<br/><br/>We will not return and would of rather had dinner somewhere else.

Sunday 30th March 1.30-2pm first time at Burgers and Beers and was less than impressed.<br/>I got the impression from the wait staff that they were too cool to offer proper service. No greeting or smile and did <br/>not offer any guidance on how we should order, wasn't until we sat down did we see the ordering procedure on the wall, which was not where you would notice it when standing at the counter.<br/>Burger was underwhelming ordered a burger with blue cheese, but lacking in taste and texture. Burger sloppy, and very little blue cheese flavour.<br/>I would be very disappointed if I was the owner of this eating place, as the quality of service, cleanliness was not up to standard. Not surprised that there were not many people eating there.

Burgers and Beers sounded good and as we were on our way to a show on 16th Jan, we thought we would call in for dinner first.<br/>The two staff were at the counter to welcome us, minus smiles and frequently called us "mate" and "buddy". Having not been there before, we were unsure how the ordering worked. We were told to order at the bar. We did. My husband then asked if the food would be brought to our table. No reply, just a blank look from the server. He asked again and was told, "nah, we will call your number". Two other couples came in separately after us and we watched them place their orders. When the numbers were being called, ours was skipped and the two following numbers were called, despite us ordering before both of them. My husband asked at the counter where our order was and was told, "sorry mate" with no explanation.<br/>Our food arrived. We had ordered a Billy Beef and Bearnaise burger and a King Julius burger and one chips and gravy. We were served two chips and gravy and when checking our receipt we noted we were also charged for them. We were not given a refund despite us telling them we had not ordered two. <br/>My husband's burger was an extremely poor excuse for a burger. One patty supposedly 160gm (there is no way that pattie was 160gm), two onion rings dripping in fat, a wilted piece of lettuce and a blob of what was supposed to be bearnaise. The patty was dry and something we would expect size wise from McDs on a bun that was huge. My burger was tasteless and the chicken was bordering on being undercooked. Neither of us ate all of the burgers or the chips. We gave the chips to the family at the next table so as not to waste them (and our money).<br/>I was disgusted by the price of the food that we got. $13.50 for a burger of that poor quality! Outrageous. <br/>We will NEVER return there. Perhaps the guys at the counter could get some lessons on better customer service and the Cook should be replaced.<br/>What I would like to know is if the owners read these reviews, what do they then do about them and can we expect any feedback?
Olivia
My first experience at burgers and beer was below average. My second experience I took two bites of my burger and found the chicken was raw. I was absolutely disgusted as pregnant at the time. No apology just refunded the money for my burger so had to go find somewhere else to eat. I vowed to never return.<br/><br/>Two years later, the recent visit for this review, my husband brings two burgers and chips home from Burgers and Beers as had a long day on a Friday. Really didn't want to eat it but I was starving so gave it a go. I had a vegetarian burger which was disgusting, no flavour and a mess to eat. My husband had a meat burger and we shared the chips and gravy. Even though we were starving we couldn't finish it as tasted so bad and we lost our appetite.

Went to the Cranford Street restaurant tonight for dinner.<br/><br/>We arrived at 7.30 and managed to claim a table and order straight away. Ordered 3 burgers, two lots of the chips and onion rings, 2 beers and an OJ (total spend just under $80). Was told at time of ordering that it would take half an hour.. food finally arrived at 8.20. For a meal that was mostly deep-fried I can't help but feel slightly annoyed at the wait. <br/><br/>The burgers were okay, I had the venison which was nice and fresh and actually tasted pretty good. The chicken burger was pretty average, my partner gave up a third of the way through and took the fillet out before finishing it. <br/><br/>The chips and gravy weren't too bad.. the onion rings however were literally dripping with fat and were incredibly salty. Didn't really feel as though I got my moneys' worth in the sides department at all. <br/><br/>The service was alright, the staff were clearly busy and weren't particularly engaging but at least were polite. <br/><br/>Overall.. still feeling sick from the grease and slightly ripped off, we won't be returning. Rated them that extra star purely due to the pleasant surprise of the venison burger.

First time I had been over this side of town since the quakes and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount or restaurants in the area my friend and I decided to get some lunch at burgers and beers as it looked quiet different although I was a bit skeptical as my friend was vegetarian and the last burger place I went was dreadful and I was worried I would be a bit disappointed however when we walk in the person behind the counter was friendly explaining how they work you order at the counter and come get your food ( this is very forward thinking for nz it's a style of service I've come accross a lot overseas and seems to work really well however looking at previous reveiws some New Zealanders appear to be a bit small minded to understand this interactive service style) we explained to the server that my friend was vegetarian who explained that they do use beef fat to deep fry which does limit the options but that the tree hugger burger was vege and could be changed to suit tastes as my friend didn't like feta they swapped it for cheddar and avocado and I got the flaming Mexican and chips at first I thought the prices were possibly a little high but when we got the food I understood why it was huge and really really nice if anything it's underpriced go to any other restaurant and you would get half the amount of food that quality for that price<br/>So overall great food great service great price only reason it's not a 5 out of 5 is cos another couple of vege options would be appriatiaed

Me and my wife decided to go based on the positive customer reviews on their company website (not this one!), and I have to say the whole experience was very average, if not quite disappointing.<br/><br/>When we walk in we picked a table and sat down and then realised there were no menus on the tables, so assumed we had to order at the counter instead. There was one guy at the counter – he was the only staff member I could see in the whole place – he was friendly enough, but not entirely engaging. We ordered from the menu at the counter and surprised we had to pay up front before the food was made.<br/><br/>I ordered the Iwi Burger, fries and a beer. My wife ordered the Chicken Pig burger, and a coke. The can of coke was quite cold, and seeing as my wife had a sore throat (plus it was a cold night) so requested for a room-temperature can of coke, which they didn’t have. So she requested the coke be swapped over for a hot coffee with plenty of milk instead. The server then told her they had virtually run out of milk, and wasn’t enough milk left for a milky-coffee! So she asked for a room-temperature glass of water instead – at this point I was frustrated my wife had to resort to water – and then server told us we’d need to keep the can of coke because “we’ve already bought it” so no refund for the coke was possible!<br/><br/>When the food was ready, instead of it being served to the table we were waved over to the counter by the server to get it instead. Then realising the burgers and fries had been put into takeaway paper bags, I asked if there were any plates or trays to eat off? Nope! We were told the idea was to take the food back to the table and eat the food out of the bags! At this point I thought to myself – is this a restaurant or a takeaway bar?<br/><br/>My burger (Iwi Burger) was ok, quite a good size, but tasted quite bland. My wife didn’t really like hers much either (Chicken Pig burger) as the chicken wasn’t breast chicken but a sort of chicken fillet, but ate it as she was starving. The fries were nice, but the gravy it accompanied was very runny, not thick and tasty at all. Not at all what I expected from a place run by a renowned chef in Christchurch.<br/><br/>I came away confused about the place – in one respect the prices are way too expensive as a takeaway bar, but the service fails to meet expectations as a restaurant. In the end, I was very disappointed that we paid $40 to eat burgers and fries out of paper bags with no table service.<br/><br/>I very much doubt I’ll go ever back.

Place was fairly empty considering it was dinner time, told the service girl I was in for takeaways - asked for a Stoke IPA while I decided what to order. I was ordering for 3 so potentially a $40-$60 sale, was told I needed to pay for my beer immediately. Tab? I said. Dine-in customers only, the response, that will be $7. Aghast, I paid for my beer and retreated to a table to read the menu. Minimum spend of $13.50 for a burger seemed pricey but maybe they are great burgers, I always give the benefit of the doubt. So I decide to order, intending to go with a combo burger, beer, chips for myself and two burgers with extras for the others I was hunting and gathering for. So potentially a $60 order. I order initially my own combo, but am stone walled before I can complete it. To my amazement, the $22 combo of beer, burger, chips cannot on any level be bent to include Stoke IPA. What beers does it include, I ask. Stoke Pale Ale etc, not IPA is the answer. Skip it I say, if you cant manage the .50c buy price difference, I have lost my appetite. I order 2 burgers for my friends, and pay my $27 for what is apparently, a privilege - I said I would get them something so I cant go home empty handed. <br/><br/>As I leave the cold, sterile environment of B&amp;B, shaking my head at the service fail I have just experienced, I walk past Argee-Bargee (my usual port of call), my smiling Indian service guy laughing with his staff. I wondered how, in this day and age, someone could get it so, so wrong. <br/><br/>My daughter recently asked me about doing a hospitality course, to my surprise it was free. I suggest B&amp;B directors, send themselves firstly, and then their staff, on a course pronto.<br/><br/>The burgers were average at best, might try a different burger shop next time.

Arrived at the restaurant around 12.45; place looked fairly lively but nothing too insane. 3 of us ordered just before 1pm - there is a good selection of burgers on the menu (venison was what I picked). However, it is bizarre that the service staff tell you "they don't do combos", and instead you have to order chips and a drink as some strangely-named meal deal - that is still a combo, stop trying to be pretentious you sell burgers for goodness' sake.<br/><br/>We were kept waiting almost 45 minutes for our burgers, which is far too long for the type of food. A table next to us actually erupted into cheers when their food arrived, so I'm guessing it took even longer for them.<br/><br/>As far as the quality of food goes:<br/><br/>* Chips were very good<br/>* Aioli and gravy were poor<br/>* Venison burger was nice, albeit a bit dry<br/>* Chicken burgers looked good<br/><br/>For $22 for a burger + chips + soft drink it isn't exactly great value. However, it was tasty enough and the food seemed pretty fresh. The wait was simply unacceptable for the type of food though - no burger can take 45 minutes to cook, end of story.<br/><br/>I would only return if I was with a group who really wanted to try it. Otherwise, I suggest you save a bit of money and try Burger Wisconsin, which offers better taste for less money (and you actually get your food before the Second Coming as well).
Jodi
Very disappointed with the vegetarian menu, as one of the burgers with deep fried Camembert, which is listed as meat free, was cooked in animal fats which only left the falafel option. <br/>The burgers themselves were disappointing and very average for the price. <br/>Definitely will not return.<br/>In comparison to specialty burger joints like ferg burger this was such a let down.
Glenn
Burgers are tasty, nothing that amazing.<br/>"Wasabi Aioli" Never again!!<br/>Step up from MCD's, however some improvement on burger quality needed.<br/><br/>A great idea though, something different.<br/><br/>Will return.
