Review Rosebank Estate Winery Restaurant - Christchurch

Rachie H
We had our end of year work dinner here tonight. It was s buffet style meal. The meal was good , a little something for everyone's tastes. Pretty basic, but as a chef I know that the basics are sometimes the hardest to get right. The staff were really professional and the manager was clearly overseeing the quality of the service which was great to see as in my experience, managers are not very visible and it was great to see him looking at the quality of the good and the quality of everyone's night. The grounds here are simply stunning and whoever the grounds keeper is should be awarded a medal for excellence (really)!. There is a fully stocked bar and the decor is eclectic and a little dated but that all adds to the overall aesthetic of the place.

A group of eight of us booked in for coffee, but stayed on for lunch, at Rosebank today. We had a lovely experience. The large dining area was fresh and cool on a hot day. The room was decorated beautifully for Christmas, and tasteful background Christmas music was playing. The staff were most pleasant and accommodating, and the food was delicious. Recommended.

Visited Rosebank estate with two people i work with who have disabilities. The lovely woman, Tanya, who greeted us and served us was absolutely amazing! Helped us sit down by the window, helped one of the men with putting sugar in his coffee and stirring it and also offered to swap an orange juice for an apple juice because the person who ordered it didn't like it (nothing wrong with the orange juice, it was great and the proper stuff, just not the type he liked) she spoke directly to the gentlemen using their names and really made us feel welcomed which is not always the case in many other places when it comes to disabilities. Fantastic experience and highly recommend it to anyone! Will definitely be back, thank you!

We had a lovely experience at Rosebank, we were very well looked after. by all the staff. They would check in to see if everything was ok and we even got blankets when the weather got a bit nippy outside. We all enjoyed our food and it was lovely to sit outside, as the garden is beautiful. We will be back again.

A group of 22 of us from Church went to Rosebank for lunch today and all enjoyed a delicious meal and coffee. It was very pleasant in the diningroom, and we had a relaxed and happy couple of hours. Thank you so much.

Great place for a group celebration especially if you have children with you. Lovely grounds, plenty of space for children to have a run around. Minimum menu but food was delicious. Team very friendly and helpful.

Lovely surroundings. Coffee was made to how I like it, being keto. We had lunch which was OK. Staff were friendly, service was prompt too. We will be returning with friends soon.

We had a work function here and the food was great. Staff were friendly and the restaurant itself looked quite nice. Might go again sometime, thanks for a pleasant evening

Was here for a training event. It was well catered and the venue staff were lovely. Have previously had brunch at the restaurant and that was a pretty good time :)

Went here for breakfast on a Sunday morning, we were the only people in the restaurant which for a place like this is understandable. I ordered the big breakfast and would have to say it was very nice.. slightly pricey however.

We had our work Christmas function at Rosebank last night .
Setting was nice
Food was terrible: No Christmas theme at all
serving spoons weren't to be found so you had to use rubber tongs from one dish to another
large boiled sausages
tomatoes and big chunks of mozzarella cheese
Chicken dish was half cooked and bland unusual taste
Salad consisted of large lettuce leaf and cut up eggs no salad dressing
and bread rolls like rocks
if i was asked what was the nicest part of the meal it was the roasted lamb roasted ( well I think it was lamb)
I have eaten at a lot of different restaurants and this was absolutely the worst.

Having returned from here, I felt I must post a review to show my dissatisfaction with the entire evening.

We booked for a group of 20 people and were told that there was another group of 34 booked in that wanted to be dining by 7:45pm so therefore, we had to be seated at 6pm. As we had children in the group, we agreed with this time.

We were all seated in a 'U' shaped table which was completely useless as we need to either get up from our seats to converse with family, or yell across the tables. Totally ridiculous to have this configuration when we were the only group in this area.

As there was this large group, we were told that we were getting the shortened menu? On this shortened menu, there were 6 options, but only 4 were available.

Entrees and mains came out fairly promptly and my main of steak was very tasty, however, came with a side order of Human Hair !

As it was a family member's special birthday, I did not want to create a fuss so decided not to say anything at the time. My Brother-in Law enquired why I had not finished my meal, so I told him. He complained to the wait staff, who quickly came over and apologised. He offered me a complimentary beverage but no mention of a refund or half price meal. We then witnessed the staff getting a 'dressing down' from the management at the bar, which was not a good look.

As it was a special occasion, we had brought our own cake, but were told when we brought it in, that we were going to be charged $1 per slice to cut it, and then a further $2 surcharge each to put in on plates. They totally ruined the surprise of the cake and we ended up eating the cake from paper napkins.

Dessert Menu came out and guess what, the one dessert that was requested, was unavailable.

The dining area was unbearably hot as there was no Air Conditioning anywhere that we could see, and we couldnt have the sliding doors opened as it was too windy. All my family were constantly fanning themselves to keep cool.

I went to pay for my meal and again, bar staff apologised for my meal. I received my single non alcoholic drink for free.
When my family went to pay for their meals, the waiter told them that if I had of told them of the hair in my food when it happened, then my meal would have been free !! Why was this not mentioned to me when I paid?

All in all, this was a terrible experience and will not be repeating again, nor would I recommend this restaurant to anyone.

My wife and son, and my Mum and I went there for Mother's Day, and although I requested in the booking to be seated in the middle area of the restaurant we were unpleasantly surprised to be seated outside in what looked like an attached make-shift tented area, giving us the impression they had overbooked for the occasion. Being the only ones seated outside we immediately felt disconnected from the restaurant and from the special occasion that it was meant to be.

Being unhappy with the arrangement I requested to the management for us to be seated inside as per the originally-agreed booking, and we were relocated to a new table inside.

Shortly after being seated inside, one of the other waitresses came over - stood at the end of the table, glared at us, and remarked "Weren't you the ones sitting outside? Have you just moved to this table on your own without telling anyone?". My wife was completely embarrassed by her comments and started crying, and my Mum just couldn't believe what she was hearing. I told the waitress that we requested to be moved inside, and that the management agreed to give us this table, and she walked off - offering no apology for her comments. The waitress should have asked management first about the arrangement, or vice versa, before coming over and making such a rude uninformed comment to us as guests. If it wasn't for the fact that we had food already on our plates and no other place to go (being Mother's Day), we would have left immediately, but instead we decided to stay and make the best of the situation.

When I went to pay at the counter the total bill didn't sound right. So after asking the counter clerk to itemise our bill, she noticed the plate of fries that we ordered for my 3 year old son was charged at $15.00 instead of $6.50!

On the brighter side, the food was nice, given it was a Buffet, but our experience with the staff had completely ruined the occasion for us.

This is the second time I've been to this restaurant (after deciding to give it another go!), but it is definitely going to be the last. Even on the first visit there were a number of issues which contributed to a bad experience. In my opinion, the staff don't look happy to be there, with a lot of them looking quite flustered and not organised. Perhaps this company makes great wine, but they certainly don't have any idea how to run a restaurant.

I found the staff to be very accommodating, and the setting was very beautiful, however the main course let it down completely. The lunch main ~ Presentation was uninteresting and non eventful and it was very bland in taste, which was very disappointing.
I did however find then Pavlova dessert to be very well presented and absolutely yummy. I would certainly go back just for the pavlova desert and coffee!!

To Rustyfrog,

I was also dining last night and was also appalled…. however my frustration was not towards the staff but was towards your table. The behaviour of your table was absolutely disgusting and frankly childish. I would think that adults would be able to cope with situations like ’late meals’ more appropriately, instead of having tantrums, swearing loudly and interupting other diners. We had a Delicious meal and my steak was cooked perfectly. I have visited Rosebank on many occasions this year and still would speak very highly of this venue. Later on I found out we had the same waitress at yours and I would like to personally thank her for her wonderful service, perhaps this table was just to hard to please??

We were in a party of 24 that "dined" at this place tonight. The booking was made 2 weeks prior and we would have thought that would have been enough warning!
We had to go to the bar to get our own drinks and it was than hour before orders were taken.
Simple questions re vegetables and method of cooking of foods could not be answered by waitresses.
Another 45 minutes before the entrees arrived and the wait staff had no idea who the meals were for.
Another 45 minutes and the mains started to appear and once again no idea of who the meals were for.
I don't know if it was because of our complaints to the manager, but main meals were atrocious with cold pasta, under cooked steaks, raw vegetables.
Not a good experience and so much for a special occasion.

Management were not wanting to accept responsibility and one waitress was seen leaving the premises in a hurry and crying - maybe dismissed by management.

The management has problems here and need keep there finger on the pulse.

We have dined here before and thoroughly enjoyed it, but tonight was the worst "dining" experience I can remember - Anywhere!

Our son was married at Rosebank Winery in March 2011 just after the new owners had reopened the establishment. We found the owners and staff excellent to deal with and they went out of their way to make the wedding and reception a great time all round. The food was excellent and so was the service. We returned in Sept 2011 for lunch and received the same great food and service. Reviews prior to March 2011 may have been disappointing but under the new management this place is awesome.

A group of 9 Adults attended Rosebank today for a friends birthday. It was the worst service I have EVER experienced!
We were not welcomed, we did not recieve one smile, despite our own warm efforts. The food was average, we had to ask the waitress for drinks each time, our plates were taken too promptly, a couple of times trying to take unfinished meals. At the end the main waitress advised it was one entertainment card per table, we advised her as per the book its 3, she said nothing and stonefaced took our hundreds of dollars with so much as a thankyou. Two of the women decided to complain, when they went in to speak to the Manager he was sitting with the rest of the staff, He told the women we just wernt happy because of "the f**king entertainment cards" saga and we got the service we deserved having the cards(not that they knew we had them until the end). The women were shocked and he then told them he didnt care because he was "selling the f**king business" and then told the woment to f**k off!
This was absolutely disgraceful and they do not deserve to have a business.

My family and I went out to Rosebank Estate recently and are very impressed with the friendliness of it.
The Chef came out to greet us after we had completed our meal which was wonderful. The food was fantastic and pricing very realistic. The staff were so very helpful and warm.
I would recommend Rosebank to all.

I attended a Christmas function at Rosebank Estate Restaurant where myself and my colleagues were incredibly disappointed. Starting with rude staff, poorly laid tables (no wine glasses, but wine bottles on the tables when we arrived) and horrible seating arrangements - as few as 4 seats per table. Only a few were larger tables with up to 8 people.

The meals came at all different times and weren't as per the menu we were given. The steak was either burnt or tough - no steak knives provided either.

I won't be returning, or recommending a meal at Rosebank!
