This is the worse place to eat a friend and I go out for a nice lunch order the "fresh fish and chips" meal arrives on first look you can tell it is really over done the batter is hard as then cut open the fish and the smell was awful then the waitress trys to tell me it's cause I'm pregnant that my smell is off walked out and will never ever return this place say fresh fish there was no way that the fish was delivered fresh today really un happy that my words don't describe how pissed off I am!!!!!!

This was literally the worst restaurant I've ever been to! The food was disgusting - service wasn't any better. Couldn't even get a drinks order correct. Would not recommend this place to anybody! If I could rate it 0 stars I would! Disgusting.
Patrick Gibney
Distressing to see the negative Comments about this place, as for me and my wife we LOVED the food and the staff who were very keen to please, Because there was an inconsistency with service from another night, they gave us a free pint of beer ! Liked the staff even more than the food ! Give them a go, it’s a good restaurant

Worst place we have ever been to. The wait staff couldn't care less about you and then to serve a raw chicken burger and have no one really care that it was raw is just shocking!!!! Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Cara Jerard
Is this place under new management? My mushroom dish that said it came with haloumi, Brie and blue cheese came out with a tiny sprinkle of what tasted like plain grated cheese melted on top, it also said a red pepper coulis but it was plain old tomato sauce! If you can't make the dish because you didn't have the ingredients then you should tell the customer, trying to fool them isn't going to work!

Absolutely love this place (I feel at home for some reason). The food is food - real food. The staff are intentful and happy hour makes me rather happy. Don't judge this place by the negitive reviews (in which I didn't).

Main meal was great. Had to go find waitress for desert menu. I asked for a dairy free desert due to being lactose intolerant. Came out with cream on it. When we asked she didn't understand there is a difference between lactose and gluten intolerant. Not good enough imagine a peanut allergy. I won't be back to dangerous for me to take the risk.

Absolutely shocking!!! Half way through eating our entrees we were asked if we were ready for our mains. We asked if we could wait till we have finished our entree so the waiter said I'll bring them out in ten minutes. My partners main was cold was then replaced after being told that his main was not for us it was for another table (what a load of shit therefore that table would have had a cold main!!) Once his meal was reheated the potato was raw. After telling the staff this all they said was we are sorry. We were offered a 10% discount off his main a whopping $3.50. We felt rushed through our whole meal and then when we asked staff for the owners details they said we can not disclose this information. I'm pretty sure if I owned a business I would want to hear constructive criticism to ensure I am running a good business!!! Will not be back and would not recommend to anyone!!!

Totally disgraceful place to eat. Food terrible, atmosphere terrible and freezing cold - room and food. I would like a refund as I certainly don't want a credit because I won't return
Tim Corcoran
Still hadn't finished my entree which come out about 10 mins after the other when the staff Brought out our mains. Meaning my main had to go cold while I finished my entree. Sat my plate on another table once I finished my entree and watched 5 different people look at the plate but leaving sitting on the table despite them seeing it was empty Certainly on the do not return to list

Worst steak ive ever had in my life! Ordered medium well n it came out with a pulse.......I can cook better than that sad excuse for a chef. Sent it back n the next one that came out was bleeding all over the plate. On the bright side I can't say enough about the restaurant manager, totally kept his cool n was so helpful.....best thing about this place, he gets 5★............this review is purely based on the food
Jordan Doidge
Poor over cooked food that we couldn't even finish told waiter who agreed with us she said she had told the cheif befor the food was served that it wasn't right . Got 10% of the bill will never go back
Olivia Allan
Terrible food. They burnt the vegetables and the stuffed chicken literally had one piece of basil in it. Complete rip off. Will not be returning.
Elise Olivier
Did not complain with management. Been there yesterday and fully agree with the most negative comments. Will not go back.
Kelly Tuinenga
Dont think it deserves a 1. Terrible, overpriced an not nice food at all! So disappointed.

Best urban pub with an atmosphere straight from the coast. Very quick service and haven't been disappointed with the service in the past and tonight included

I don't normally do this and opened this account to say DO NOT GO HERE

PEOPLE WITH FOOD ALLERGIES, OR DIET REQUIREMENTS DO NOT GO HERE. menu was not clear and answers were not clear or forth coming I still don't know if I could have had the brownie???

This was for a work do of 15 people. The entree was reheated or brought in from Pak n Save. The main meals took 15 to 20 minutes from the first meal out to the last meal out. (at this time there was only one other table in the whole place) A Desert was forgotten, a knife got dropped over a persons shirt with sauce etc, a little apology and a giggle. BAD SERVICE. one of the main meals veges looked like was the last from the bottom of the pot, mixed veges, ha there was only cauliflower. A person went up to bar to get service to the table and asked them to do their jobs after we had finished dinner, at this point they got cut off and 3 people ordered drinks then the whole table got cut off from alcohol beverages, it worked out that it was only 2 drinks per person over the whole night....

the company can spend $2000+ easily on a work do and we spent under 1/2 due to poor service and bad vibes.

Have never been disappointed with the food. Usually I have the Fish and Chips which is always fresh like the sea but today for lunch I decided to have the Whitebait fritter $26 and I wasn't disappointed. Served with salad and fries and within 2 fresh slices of bread it was huge. My husband had the Beef burger $24 which he always has, 2 patties which are moist and perfectly flavoured, not mixed with sausage meat and with all the trimmings. I hope this place never closes. Maybe just update the inside and try an all day brekky, a daily roast and soup of the day.

Is was as its meant to be, good service bit expensive but i can over look that. I like the theme venue, great for after work drinks, needs a bit of a refresher and it will make it great

Awful, awful food. Mussels were just reheated shrunken mussels. The waitress wasnt sure if they had been made fresh but were warm on outside andcold in middle...! Manager came and advised they were out of mussels and asked if i wanted something else. I declined. My wife ordered salad (swimming in dressing) and ribs which were drowning in a rich spicy sauce that wasnt mentioned on the menu. NO APOLOGY for a poor meal that I returned and my wife didnt eat. Overpriced. Poor service. A very VERY bad version of Lone Stars... Which is across the road if you are in the area!
Winona Bell-Scott
Highly disappointed. Over priced and terrible quality food. However the Waiter was very friendly . I will never eat here again. Don't waste your time going here.
Aaron Roberts
Food was over priced and small portions and slowest service i have seen other people just left. I recommend going across the road to lone star.
David Hardy
Yeah...nah. We found the prices they charged were at the high end (eg $35 for a steak) but the quality was as if we'd cooked it at home - nothing sensational. You can go to other places and get stunning food if you pay $35 for a main. I had to pay full price for my less than ordinary experience, lots of people seemed to have had vouchers via Grab One.

I have dined here twice once spending $180+ on dinner & drinks for our family - we had smiles and were treated reasonably well although although you kind of get the feeling of disconnection with the staff, food was really great although when we left the place we had our 3 children with us as we approached our vehicle we had a dog run towards the kids barking making them scream out of fear a few seconds later the chef comes out from the kitchen and puts the dog in his car and does not even acknowledge my crying terrified daughter, not professional at all (we were parked next to chefs car). 2nd visit was last night (Monday) using deal vouchers we were treated horrible!and by the manager she greeted us with Hi no smile very cold almost, took say 15 minutes for water then a further 25 mins for bread, the mains were quickly followed, well we sat waiting all we could see were 3 girls standing around in their katmandu jackets drinking drinks acting very unhappy they had to work...the fact we used vouchers I think is the reason we were let to feel like lower classed unimportant people! Will never ever return the worst feeling in the world.

Horrible experience. Me and my partner booked the table at 730 (for an anniversary dinner) both 22 years old. We were seated and ordered a lemon lime and bitters and raspberry and coke. We ordered our meals and ten minutes into waiting we had a waitress come up to us "they are telling me to check ids" we questioned this as we were sitting in a quiet restaurant waiting for a meal. Then followed by her supervisor we were escorted out. This was hugely embarrassing and extremely inconvenient. They should not have sat us at a table and made us wait if we weren't aloud in. Absolutely not a good experience at all.
Louise Wedlake
Underwhelming! Certainly not a gastro pub as advertised. Should have known better we weren't impressed last time we went (about 2 years ago) and only really returned as we had a gift voucher. Poor service, poor food, not value for money at all. Will not be returning!
Beth
So terrible! The food was so expensive and really badly cooked eg. cold chips, burnt tough as leather steak, greasy and disgusting. We are by no means fussy but the food was probably the worst we have ever had. The only thing on the menu that interested us at all was the steak which can served with a boring salad, stone cold chips and no sauce. The best they could do was a bit of Garlic butter on the side! My husband's "sirloin" was in fact two very small very burnt super tough pieces of very poor grade meat. For $27!!!!
On the up side on the whole the staff were good and apologised for our appalling meal. For better prices and a lot better food we would go to somewhere else in the future. Don't waste your time with these guys until they pick up their game.
Surroundings are cheesy, no atmosphere.

We went to this establishment, Papanui branch, Christchurch, on 5 December as we had purchased a deal voucher.

The meal and service were fine - can't complain about that. The fun part comes when it's time to pay.

We had advised them when booking and ordering that we were using a voucher - o.k. no problem!. However, upon paying, West Coast Bar and Grill refused the voucher saying 'it had already been used' - it absolutely had not. Their response was that this is a common occurrence as people print off the vouchers more than once and try and present them several times. When I asked to see their voucher records (each voucher has a I.D. number) they showed me a messy, A4, crossed out sheet of paper which I would have to say anybody would have difficulty in reading - obviously paperwork is not one of their skills. I will point out that our voucher number was not crossed off on the Page however they refused to accept it anyway. I therefore not only had to pay for the full cost of the meal but also a voucher that they refused to accept.

I have used many of these vouchers at different restaurants, never with a problem. And interesting most places have the I.D. numbers on their computer system so when it puts through the till it marks it off as being used - not some jumbled piece of crossed out mess on a single A4 sheet. My advice to anybody using vouchers, be cautious if you are buying one for this restaurant, it sounds, according to the manager on the day, 'this is a regular occurrence', and we have to turn many down. Well - perhaps that because your system is a mess and can't even be deciphered by those that work there!

Vouchers are a great way of trying new places and I'm certainly not knocking that system. I put no fault on the voucher company - they sold the voucher in good faith. Vouchers are also great for families/groups, and/or those on a limited budget, a really great way of getting out and about. However, if you want one accepted at West Coast Bar and Grill you might want to think again!

Just Brilliant....went there for lunch yesterday. Wow great place, service was great , we were even offered a heater, food was fresh and so tasty whitebait sandwich and porkbelly. The service was outstanding the best we have seen for a while in Christchurch. We will defiantly be going back there soon. Thanks heaps West Coast Bar and Grill.

In general the food was OK. However the service by the Maitre d' was appalling. I don't think I have ever had such rude service anywhere ever and the group of 12 I was with were completely gobsmacked at the attitude and behaviour of this particular person.

I will not be going back to this place unless there is a change in Maitre d'.

Did not have a very good experience with this restaurant. Food was well presented and cooked, but very slow - waited over 45 mins. Service was not great, with long wait times to have the orders taken or plates cleared. Basics were not done - such as water on the table, or cutlery to eat items. When I posted my experience in a review on another site I got a reasonably rude phone call from the operations manager of this place who didn't really make any attempt to apologise for the event, wanted to know if I was the only one in our party who didn't enjoy the dinner and told me that she was concerned that people may read the review and not think favourably of them. I was essentially told off by this person for writing my comments as it went to the "CEO" of the company, and I was told she was disappointed that I had written a review. I doubt I will be back here, and would encourage others to think carefully about dining here, or at least writing an honest review.

Went here for my boyfriend's birthday and the place was amazing. Loved the waterfall and the warm pub style restaurant. The chicken dish I had was nice and my boyfriend loved his steak

Knowing about the famous waterfall and sound effects of the West Coast inside the restaurant I decided to book a table for two requesting a view to the waterfall. I was told the only table available beside the waterfall was a table for four and as I was booking a table for only two people they couldn't guarantee us that table but told me they would do their absolute best to give it to us. Sure enough when we got there the table was already occupied - by one person! So we got given a table which was directly behind the waterfall (a big stone wall) and so couldn't see anything of the waterfall. I didn't think what they meant by "we'll do our best" was actually "we'll accept the first person that walks in and seat them at the table for four with the best view". Never mind, I tried to put that behind me. After being seated me and my wife ordered but they got the order wrong no less than 3 times. My wife ordered a raspberry and coke drink with no ice, and it arrived with ice. Simple mistake, but one that happens nearly every time she requests no ice! I ordered the Whitebait Butty as a main but it arrived as an entre! And my wife ordered the fish of the day with fries instead of salad, and it arrived with salad instead of fries! When I asked why there were so many mistakes, they said "we have a new chef on tonight". That's just no excuse when paying $80-$100 for a dinner for two. Even when we asked the waitress what the salad was made up of she didn't even know, so points off for lack of staff training as well. The food was ok, not fantastic, but good enough. But the whole night was practically ruined by the fiasco of errors that following from the moment we walked in.

If you are after a "pub meal" with a bit of style, this is a great place to go. Reasonable prices, excellent service with a smile and pretty good food. The place has an interesting atmosphere with it's waterfall and sound effects of the wild West Coast. The only down side is perhaps the meals took a tad long (45mins) to come out given that they weren't hugely busy, but not unreasonably so. We'll be back here again.

Service was very slow for our Sunday brunch, but then most of the tables around us were asking after their meals also. When we politely asked the manager, she said 'it has been only 25 minutes' (and this just for a straightforward breakfast). When our meals arrived after 45 minutes, not everything was on the plate, such as butter was on my partner's plate but not mine (so he gave me his), and the food was not very warm. We'd long ago drunk the coffee we'd ordered for our meals, and were ignored when we asked (again, politely) for a complimentary refill (to go with our late food). Never again.

2 star rating = Meh, definately experienced better...
Restaurant was empty apart from 2 tables the whole time we were there, (long enough for a game of rugby) but were told it was not possible to have a table to dine,(understand there may have been later bookings HOWEVER we could have ate and left in time) nor could we order off the main menu if we didn't have a table. I don't understand why this could be an issue, but we opted for fries and garlic bread instead however were disappointed that the garlic bread was doughy and underdone.
Hopefully you guys can get it right next time

We have just returned home after a lovely time at West Coast Bar and Grill.

The adults meals my husband and I had weren't quite to our liking but the service and all the other food was so fantastic we'll definitely be back to "try again".

I wish I got the name of our waitress because whatever she's being paid it is not enough. She was amazing, so friendly and chirpy but not in an annoy way. She was great with the children and the free birthday sundae made my nephew's day. I truly have not had service that good in a very very long time.

To the blonde haired woman who served the table reserved for Paul at 6.30pm tonight - YOU ARE FANTASTIC!!!

Went for dinner, was excellent service. The small where on the small size for the price and a little slower then I would expect to come out, glad I had coupon from entertainment book, would not go back with out. Waterfall in the middle of restaurant great, a little put off by the helicopter noises and gun shots… Partner complained as did not have any wild food as he expected, not whitebait and only fish was fish of the day and mussels.
