Review No. 1 Chicken - Epsom

Christopher Fohetaha
The quality of the food was excellent, and the service was satisfactory. I asked for help three times, and each time, he treated me positively. The only complaint I have is about the size of the store. It was hard to eat comfortably because the space inside was small. If you're looking to try a new chicken place, I highly recommend it.

No1 Chicken, the name says it all – it truly lives up to its reputation as a premier destination for Korean chicken aficionados. My recent visit to this charming take-away spot left my taste buds singing with joy, but my wallet did feel a slight pinch. The star of the show, of course, is their Korean chicken. Crispy on the outside, succulent on the inside, and bursting with mouthwatering flavors, No1 Chicken's offerings are nothing short of addictive. From the classic soy garlic to the fiery hot options, each bite is a flavorful journey to Korean culinary paradise. The menu at No1 Chicken offers a delightful variety of chicken combinations, sides, and dipping sauces, ensuring there's something to satisfy every palate. The freshness and quality of their ingredients are evident, making the slightly higher prices easier to justify. While it's true that No1 Chicken's prices may lean towards the higher end of the spectrum for take-away options, the delectable taste and the overall experience make it a worthwhile indulgence for anyone craving authentic Korean chicken. So, if you're looking to treat yourself to a finger-licking, Korean-inspired feast, don't hesitate to make No1 Chicken your go-to choice – it's a taste sensation that's well worth the occasional splurge.

The chicken is golden and crispy. It's better to order it without the sauce and get the sauce on the side, as if it's sauced I feel they put too much of it. The place is small and mostly for take away, but if you want to eat there keep in mind you may not find a spot to sit down. The stools are a bit wobbly and should be fixed or replaced. All in all, if you like fried chicken (Korean style) it's a good place to go.

My personal favorite: crispy cup chicken

Still Crispy even after coating!!!!! Unforgettable taste !!! Bigger portion, better taste, more drink options and better customer service compare with CBD branch.💯

This place is great. The chicken bites are great, and the chips are well made as well. Get the seasoned ones as the plain while tasty are a bit dry. They have friendly service, and it doesnt take long for them to cook your food nice and hot. If you get chips they will combine in the same box and make it easy to carry and eat. Well recommended

Fantastic, flavourful chicken at a good price. Big portion sizes. I recommend the half and half so that you can try a couple different flavours. The seasoned chicken is sweet chili, and there is a little spice.

Korean establishment. Simple, clean & cozy ambience. Well ventilated & no oily smell. Crispy chicken was nice , crunchy & delicious. Spicy option is another good choice for those who loves spicy food. Order & food is served in 10 minutes. Most customers prefer to take away & enjoy their hot food in school or at work. Friendly & courteous staff & food is cooked happily.

A small shop by the entrance of the Newmarket train station on Remuera Road. They do have a couple of tables and a few stools on the side for eating in but it looked like most people took it for takeaway. You order and pick up the food at the counter. I grabbed some chicken for eating in. You can choose either half or whole, with or without bone, with different seasonings. I grabbed the boneless half chicken and it came with side pickles. The chicken was nice and crispy even smothered in the sauce and the sauce had a nice flavour. Quite a nice place to stop by for fried chicken.

For 13$ chicken n chips and 6$ korean hotdog, i wasn't expecting a big portion, i was surprised and the taste is really good, chicken and hotdog is very crispy and not overbattered. I will definitely comeback.

The best Korea Fried Chicken in town. Worthwhile to buy the crispy chicken and buy the sauce separately, if you gonna take home to enjoy though.

Korean fried chicken - close enough to home to always tempt you on the way back from the gym. A convenient snack is their boneless fried chicken - think popcorn chicken, fried Korean style, which means double fried - and they also serve other fried goods (their chips look pretty amazing which means I need to stop by for their chips one day) along with their usual chicken offerings.

Very nice Korean establishment. Simple, clean and a cozy ambience. Was the perfect amount for lunch.Excellent fried chicken with sauce and the dumplings too

Tried many fried chicken places - No. 1 is still the best! Tasty af, not overly battered, not overly saucy, and the chicken is not dry. Chips are nice and crispy and is covered in some of that yum seasoned sauce. Super bloody full afterwards aye.

I always grab the chance to get a half crispy and half seasoned chicken whenever I come to Newmarket. My wife and I particularly like the pickled raddish.

Indeed the No 1 chicken for us! :-)

Wasn’t a fan of the sweet chicken just because it tasted like it was coated with sweet chili. The original fried chicken was a lot better! Almost like street eats. Small table settings, quick service, in the heart of Newmarket.

Afternoon snack from no1 chicken. I love the seasoned chicken one. We managed to try this after lockdown lifted in Auckland. Will come back soon, it’s yummy

The boy staff was very unfriendly. He never answers to customers and there is lack of communication. He didnt give us radish pickle as well. Previous girl staffs wasn't like him. Anyway chicken from no1 chicken is always good :)

Our favorite fried chicken ! Better if they have delivery service

a little place next to train station, they serve a really good and crispy chicken! Both the crispy and spicy chicken are so yummy!

I got the seasoned cup chicken, and was pretty disappointed. The sauce was underwhelming in flavour and congealed - dunno if this is the typical experience, but I’m not impressed at all.

The chicken itself was seasoned well but dry and only crispy on some parts. Probably won’t be back, unfortunately - I had high hopes from recommendations.

Seasoned Cup Chicken: 3/10

No.1 Chicken is indeed No.1 in terms of spicy fried chicken with korean cuisine styled sauces. I always go for the boneless 1/2 chicken and it is amazing. The taste, crispness and tenderness of the cooked chicken is just the perfect combination for a weekend meal.
Ellie
Personally, I feel the chicken was not that tasty. On the bright side, the crispy half definitely had enough crunch.

Korean fried chicken. Portion was not too bad. We ordered the half and half crispy and seasoned chicken. You can get with or without bones. Flavor-wise, it was quite average. I was expecting more flavor from the sauce. Service was a bit slow. Some people came after us and they got their food first.
Karen Yeung
The seasoned chicken was a tad bit too sweet for my liking, I’d prefer it to be a little more balanced. However, the crust on the chicken was absolutely delicious as well as light and crispy. The pickled radish is a nice side dish to cut the oily feeling from eating fried food. The wait was a little too long in my opinion, though we did go during 1pm on a Monday.

5/5 Taste
4/5 Display
4/5 Quantity
4/5 Customer Service

Great Korean Fried Chicken Takeaway shop in Newmarket!

Their popcorn cup chicken is only like $7~8 and it is soo worth it. I personally like the seasoned one, nice and crunchy yet sweet and spicy.
It's Korean fried chicken but the cook is a Chinese man. One portion of chicken(approx $30) can feed two adults.

Location:4/5
Taste:4/5
Service:3/5
Value:3/5
Variety: 1/5

👍Crispy coat with tender meat. I can taste the freshness and rich flavor of the marinated chicken.

👎Narrow space to sit inside. They don't provide water. You have to buy it for $4 each. Not many choices on food. You'll get bored at the end when eating only chicken all the time.
Claire
Really good chicken, perfect for takeaways. The spicy variety has just enough spice to make you sweat but not too much. Staff are very friendly. You can see the kitchen from the dining area so you know they serve food hygienically.

Takes a while to get food if there's a long queue so it's advisable to go during non-peak times if you don't like waiting.

This place is perfect if you have a fried chicken craving!! Generous portions and not at all greasy. I surprisingly really enjoyed the crunchy radish on the side.
The menu is very limited and a range of sauces would be appreciated.
Amanda
i am so hopelessly addicted to this place. i like to order their original crispy chicken unseasoned. they’re just so perfect and boneless and with the pickled radish cubes, they’re perfection. 😭😭😭 currently sitting on the train with them in my lap ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

Awesome seasoned chicken and goes really well with the pickled turnips. Ordered half boneless seasoned chicken and I couldn't finish it really even though they're so tasty. The only thing is they didn't provide any napkins or forks for takeaways so if you couldn't wait to get home to eat it, you have to use your hand. Be prepared to lick but remember, Don't eat your fingers!
Hungry Zombie
Always my go-to place to grab my all-time flavour Crispy half for dinner. This place usually full and pack of people. They always take order on the spot and freshly fried the chicken. Each time my visit the quality of food always keep consistent. I would recommend anyone who craving about fried chicken, go to no1 chicken!
Kelly Wu
Not a happy visit. The size of the chicken bites is so small not even popcorn chicken size. The seasoned chicken is basically with sweet chilly sauce and it is too sweet. I wouldn’t go again. There are much better value chicken in KFC.

Korean fried chicken is the best thing since sliced bread as far as I'm concerned. Unlike it's American variant, Korean fried chicken has a much thinner, delicate crust that's crystalline-like; add in the fact that it's boneless and you've literally won at life. The shop itself is tiny & if you're eating in you can expect to be bumping elbows a lot, but that's fine by me. This humble little spot in Newmarket gets a fiver from me. If I can't be bothered making the effort to dine at Pocha - No.1's where you'll find me.
Vanessa Gao
One of my favourite places to have Korean Fried chicken. The place is small but the food is delicious. I often come and grab a small bowl of fried chicken which doesn’t appear a lot but is very filling. The best thing is the chicken is crispy and fresh but not too oily.
Tony Shi
One of my top 5 Korean fried chicken stores in Auckland. Have been here multiple times but still won't get bored of it!
Not a lot of options on the menu but every option is done incredibly well.
Everytime I go the staff are always extremely friendly.

I got curious as this place got a lot of good reviews in Zomato. I finally decided to try it. We ordered the crispy chicken and the seasoned one. I loved them both, but I enjoyed the crispy chicken more. The place, though, is quite small. I think they should have a bugger place for the customers who would like to dine there.
Rob Boiser
Our favourite go to place when we were still living in New Market. SweetChili Chicken and Plain chicken is to die for. Me and partner goes here to dine or do takeaway order maybe like 2/3times a week. Very affordable. Very delicious. I miss this place just by writing a review
Flora
Crunchy fried chicken with sweet chili sauce. Love it! My colleagues say this is one of the most popular Korean fried chicken in Auckland. Come and try!
Wendy Wang
Fried chicken is good. It’s very tiny place inside, so it’s better to take away. But very high of calories with lots of sweet source on the top.
Tony Ma
I’m not a big fan of deep fried crispy chicken and adding sauce to make them soggy.

We usually come here when we get munchies at night.

I still like my chicken crispy. Sauce add seperately.

Yum.

Service: 4/5
Environment: 3/5
Food Quality: 3.5/5
Food Quantity: 4/5
Price per person: $10-$20

Ordered the cup chicken and fries to takeaway.
The chicken was super crispy and wasn’t greasy like KFC. The sauce was sweet and tangy which was sooooo good 🙆🏻‍♀️
100% recommend from me!
Eloise Kerr
I'm obsessed with this place. As a white person it took me a while to adapt to the flavour of their seasoned chicken but once I did there was no going back. The quality is always consistent and they're usually pretty speedy too. Cup seasoned chicken is my go-to when I want to treat myself.
Jenny @ga.eats
Undoubtedly one of my favourite weekend meals. All you need to do is boil some rice and eat half a boneless seasoned chicken while binging comedy specials on Netflix. Super juicy, tender chicken pieces with a light and crunchy coating drenched in perfect sweet and spicy sauce. I like to take the residual sauce and mix it in with my rice. If you haven’t tried this place yet, it’s just outside the train station in Newmarket.
The Poor Foodie
Food: 5/5
Service: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

This place is my new favourite! Felt like fried chicken after watching a movie in broadway cinema so I just called the place for an order before leaving the cinema. 15mins and the chicken was ready:) chicken was still crispy even though it was cooled down after walking home. The homemade picked radish was on point also! I ate half of a chicken alone in one go!
Emma Smith
BEST CHICKEN AND CHIPS EVER!!!😍 Staff are great, food is cheap and really yummy! Only thing is that there’s not much room in the place for people, only has two actual tables and a tiny space for people to sit in. Apart from that 10/10

Who doesn't love fast, delicious, juicy, spicy fried chicken?? This place is it, I've had a few different KFC (korean fried chicken ) joints before and this has yet to be dethroned.

Their chicken is really really juicy, and the skin is perfectly crispy, exactly the combo you want for fried chicken. Everything is boneless and super easy to eat, it's just the perfect snack/main or whatever occasion.

Every box of chicken also comes with house made pickled radish cubes, if you've never had these with fried chicken, they are the bomb, it's the perfect counter balance to the fried stuff.
Clare Ang
Satisfying Korean fried chicken! sufficiently salty, savoury and spicy. Great portion size as a light snack or lunch. will be back in future to try the chicken with bones on.
Kicky
I tried to have a take away menu buy Crispy Half & Seasoned Half (boneless), the chicken meat is tender and the crispy coated is quite crunchy but the taste of the crispy coat is not too strong, the seasoned one was too sweet for me. Overall for me is just average and standard.
Jennifer Marie Seah
Overhyped, rude frontline staff and questionable policies. Staff do not know where to find their own up-to-date menu online when asked on the phone.
Chicken is decent but still overhyped- seasoned vs spicy seasoned are essentially the same but that the former is sweeter and the latter has more chilli, but are generally more of the same as expected.
Forced to advance order when reserving a table. Not going there again.
Alice In New Zealand
Love this chicken so much. I usually have this half, boneless flavored chicken for 2. Love the radish as well. It is famous among Korean people as its tasty good:) they got cup chicken as well.

So I love me some fried chicken from time to time and on various occasions after happy hour I have bought chicken from here.

I love the spicy Korean fried chicken with all the saucy goodness! Goes well with beer and wine, maybe even vsop!

Today I went in for a cup chicken, took like 25 minutes though. Didn’t like it as much as the other things on the menu but overall a great place if you’re a fan of fried chicken
Tom Wong
I love this place! If you love fried chicken here is the place to be! The chicken is crunchy and flavourful and the portion sizes are pretty generous. The chips are also super amazing. The only possible down side is that the wait time is a little steep and the price is reasonably high to fill you right up (for a fastfood takeout option).
Ria Amin
Spicy seasoned chicken is frickin' yumm! If you love Korean friend chicken definitely give this place a try. Actually finger licking good. fair warning that the spicy one is actually spicy so they usually give pickled radish which helps so much with the heat.
Angela
This place is perfect for after school or after work snacking. The cup seasoned chicken is super yummy and deliciously flavoured with Korean sticky sauce. It’s quite a small store but there’s usually seats available. Service is very consistent and good :)

We went for dinner tonight at this store.

We wanted to order "crispy half and spicy seasoned half" under the "original chicken" set. However, was told that under that "original chicken" menu, we were only allowed to order "crispy half and seasoned half", not "crispy half and spicy seasoned half". The difference is the word "spicy". We were advised to order under the "chicken half" menu, for "crispy half" and "spicy seasoned half" separately. We were puzzled as to the rationale behind this arrangement, as the difference was just "spicy seasoned" and "seasoned". Anyway, we just followed the staff's advice and ordered "crispy half" and "spicy seasoned half" separately under the "chicken half" menu which cost slightly more expensive in totality.

The service was pretty fast although there were quite a number of customers there.

The chickens looked good and appealing, however the tastes were just very average, below our expectations. Would go to Katsubi High Street in future when we crave for Korean fried chickens.

Food & Beverage : 5/10
Service : 6/10
Price : 5/10
Ambience : 5/10

Chicken is okay here, tried boneless half and half and cup chicken and they were alright. I personally like spicy seasoned chicken the most. The regular seasoned chicken is a bit too rich though.
SJ
Eating the chicken here reminded me so much of when I used to live in South Korea. It's that good and the flavours are so close to what fried chicken is like in Korea.
Rob Lam
Business name is mis leading, not actually a decent place for chicken. Crispy chicken literally had no flavour in the batter and or the chicken itself. Had some drum stick and wing pieces where it looked like they were sliced in half on purpose and used the sliced off pieces to make up for some chicken pieces. Some pieces were tasty. Not many seats and tables as well, small area. But generally OK I guess as it’s Korean

This place is awesome. If your after tasty fried or crispy chicken to eat in or on the go you need to check this place out. Ideal for small or large meals and my kids really love the chicken in a cup

Emma
Got the seasoned cup of chicken. Really decent serving size for the price although the sauce got very overpowering by the end and I had to give the rest of it to someone else to finish. The chicken is well cooked and crispy though. Also tried the non-seasoned one which was also very good but slightly on the bland side.
JArmstrong
I get cravings for the chicken here! Love the sauce they but in the chicken, it is a little sweet and spicy, probably what makes it so addictive. The portion looks small but it really isn’t. Nom nom nom 😋
Gastrophilist
Perfect crispy fried chicken. If you are just after fried chicken, its one of best. Have your own sauce to go with it like peri-peri and enjoy!

Spicy sauce is a bit too sweet for me (Yes you read that right).

Excellent service. Price wise in the middle range, not cheap but not too expensive.
Dannielle Andrews
Great chicken! Seasoned chicken wasn't for me but my partner was obsessed with it. I like their fried chicken more. They have great chips as well. Highly recommend.
Foodie
The chicken here is great, nice and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. It’s great when you eat it straight away but when you leave it for a while it will get slightly soggy (due to the sauce unless you get crispy). My favourites would probably be the spicy and seasoned one. The crispy one was also great but it was slightly bland for me. There is quiet a bit of sauce for the spicy and especially the seasoned one. Due to little space the store is quiet clustered and it’s not so easy to move around. There are only about 2-3 tables while the rest are just stools facing a wall, so if it’s rush hour you won’t find a place to sit. The only other thing is the wait takes quiet a bit (or it could be because I was quiet hungry and it was rush hour). Overall it was good? I would prob come again next week but try avoid rush hours.
AA
Crispy and succulent chicken. Great portion for the price. Good service, freshly made. Not much seat available though, but its the food and service that matters!
Rosanne Choy
Tender on the inside, crispy on the outside. No 1 chicken really knows how to get their chicken done right. Their seasoned chicken is also delicious and would recommend it highly.
Hasiba Zareh
I was really expecting the seasoned chicken to have a real spicy kick to it. Sadly it didn’t.
All in all it was okay, next time I go I will be asking to make it a lot more hot!

Update I tried the spicy boneless chicken and it was amazing
Saphic Chan
Our go to place for korean fried chicken. Fast and easy takeaways, just call 10 minutes ahead! Their chicken batter is so crispy and crunchy that it doesn’t get soggy on the 15 min drive home. I say you takeaway, and enjoy them at home with a couple of cold beers! Reheating the leftovers the next day wasn’t too shabby either. We love their spicy seasoned, but not for the faint hearted. It is really spicy!!! Else their crispy is great too!

Eating in can be a little uncomfortable especially in summer, it gets a little too warm. And you’ll leave smelling like fried food.
Grace Huang
I finally got to eat some korean fried chicken after hearing all my friends talk about how I was missing out.

Service: 9/10
The staff was polite and took our order efficiently. We were able to receive our order within 10 minutes. It is quite expensive for not a lot of food.

Food: 9/10
I ordered the spicy seasoned chicken which came with radish to lighten the meal. The chicken was crispy and tender. The chicken wasn’t too spicy and it was perfect for a hot day.

Ambiance: 5/10
The decorations were pretty nice and everything was very clean. There isn’t a lot of seating so it’s not suitable for large groups of people. It was extremely hot because they didn’t have air conditioning or a fan.
Kyu
Half and half chicken listed $28 on their menu. Charged $30 so asked. This was Dec 2017. Its 17 Jan 2018, menu still $28. They should have told us when ordered over the phone. Dodgy owner.
John Kemp
After reading the view the major of them rule...
Staff at work said it smells good that's good enough and it sure taste good...I would go back again that's that... very Good over all No 1 Chicken Newmarket.
LoveEatLive
I came here twice.. the crispy chicken is dry.. the chips have no seasoning .. no sauce whatsoever.
Ordered the seasoned chicken and there was too much sauce.. all I could taste was sauce.
There is a very small about of actual chicken blown up by the use of batter to make it look like a deceiving serving portion.. perhaps chicken to batter ratio of 2:8

Will never eat here again.
I don't usually write negative feedback but I am just so disappointed in this one. Really need to improve quality in terms of texture.

Value for money total $13 for 2cups boneless chicken #crispychicken #seasonedchicken, good location and it took 10 minutes to cook. So fast, so yummy, recommended 👍👍
Jan
Perfect place for a snack! The crispy chicken is exactly what is needed to go with a few beers with friends. The shop itself is rather crammed so takeaway would be a better option.
Aimee.
They cook the chicken for you after you order so everything comes out hot and fresh. I got the seasoned flavour of chicken and it was super tasty and juicy. Not dry at all. The outside was crunchy and well seasoned with sesame seeds.
Geena Han
i came again today, so so so tasty that was the best Korean fry chicken in the world, must order spicy seasoned boneless one, eat with sour daikon, i have to say the world so wonderful!!
Elisa
Quick and easy, chicken is always juicy and tender. Original is nice and crispy, but my go-to is always the marinated boneless chicken.
Good service, premises are a little small so we usually takeaway instead.
Sharon Louie
Chicken isn't my favourite meat but after tasting no-1 chicken, omg. I love the seasoned chicken the most and it's a great place to hang out with friends. I recommend getting half the seasoned chicken and half the crispy chicken.
Tenz
Don't remember the chicken ever being this dry from No1 Chicken. It tastes similar to an over cooked chicken. But overall great service. Always ask for the side radish ☺️
Mina
Popped in for an early dinner tonight.

The combination of succulent chicken with golden brown crumbs is in perfection with their crispy chicken.
The combination of sumptious chicken with honey like texture sauce is amazing in their seasoned chicken.
Chips were slightly undercooked, but otherwise satisfactory.
Itslydialee95
Used to be my go to place for Korean chicken but definitely not anymore especially after buying a whole chicken for $28 only to be given these scrawny little soggy chicken pieces.
If you are all about great portions this place is not for you.
Nick Li
used to be really good, now it's really dry and portion seems to be much smaller.. not sure what happened but don't think I'll go back as regularly as before..
Daniel
Not as good as I expected.
My friends told me it was really good.
The one time I go the chicken was all tried up and shit lol. The chips were better than the chicken.

Don't know if it was just a bad batch or what.
Hungryfoxbb
Best Korean fried chicken I have tried so far in NZ. Very authentic Korean fried chicken and their picked radish is great too - they will give you another bag of it for free if you ask for more! That's true Korean kindness. Hopefully they'll keep up their good work!
Trina Wang
Food was good. We order spicy seasoned chicken and fried chicken. I recommend service should be more friendly. If you like to have a good snacks time, here is a good place to go! Shenda

Not bad. I ordered half crispy chicken and spicy sauce chicken. I recommend order the spicy sauce chicken. Crispy chicken don't have much taste on it.

Location:5/5
Service:3.5/5
Environment: 4/5
Food: 3/5

Did the chef change?

I used to go there but today was quite disappointing. The wait was long and chicken were dry.

Their cup chicken is a great little snack to have, and to share with friends. Hopefully this was just a one off so we can keep going back there.
Shazza
Very friendly service and they fry the chicken right there in front of you when the orders are in
So it is very crispy and hot =) We always have Original crispy half seasoned half in boneless. Me and my partner got weird craving for this place and we just have to go and eat it. It's our choice over KFC ;)

A small little Takeaway shop. You must really love deep fried chicken. Its not bad but I've tasted better chicken at a normal takeaway shop that does burgers etc. Go for the boneless chicken and it comes with small radish. However you will feel like you're going to die from a heart attack, I can feel the arteries being blocked!
Francis Goode
Decent chicken however, had too many small bones so it was quite inconvenient to eat, I'll try boneless next time. The desks were not especially comfortable due to the small space provided, however the atmosphere was alright. May come here again to try new chicken.
Orient Express
My friends and I were looking for a good feed and decided to try this place as we were in the mood for some Korean fried chicken and I'm glad to say we were not disappointed!

We ordered boneless Seasoned Chicken and Crispy Chicken. The former was coated in sweet sauce which was based on the Korean chili paste you often see in Bibimbap and hot plate meat dishes. The latter was plain fried chicken so no surprises there. I felt both had their merits but slightly preferred the Crispy version. The meal is served with a small platter of pickled radish (probably to be used as a pallet cleanser). The portion sizes were big and we felt like we got our money's worth. Most importantly, the chicken pieces were appropriately sized and not drenched in oil! My only gripe is that the restaurant did not offer rice which I feel would have complemented the chicken perfectly.

The staff were friendly and took payment before preparing the food in the same way fast food joints do.

The restaurant itself is quite small so there weren't many tables. In saying that, it's probably a better idea to order takeout and consume with a giant bowl of white rice at home anyway!

No 1 Chicken is not the best Korean fried chicken I've ever had but there's little about the place I can fault. The frying technique in their signature dishes is evident so it's hard to imagine ever receiving a bad dish. I can see No 1 Chicken being fondly remembered for delivering fun, appetizing food to a hungry group or friends and/or family which at the end of the day is all you can really ask for.

Came here the other night with the flattie. Really enjoyed this place. Really good chicken bit I wouldn't quiet say my best.

THE FOOD
Crispy Chicken Boneles (4/5) - Loved this. Good crunch, fresh chicken, well cooked. To make it a 5 would include a bit more flavor or something in the batter.

Seasoned Chicken Boneless (4.5/5) - Loved this more. Ssme as previous. although i wish I had ordered crispy chicken and just used this flavouring as a dipping sauce to maintain the crunch. I also wish i gor the bone option instead.

Pickles (5/5) - This is a complimentary side but I must say this is one of the bests for me. Nkt sure what they had done but was so crisp and tasteful. Loved the tang.

Fries (4/5) - As good as fries get.

THE ENVIRONMENT (5/5)
Liked the board where customers have eriten their bit. Good lighting, energetic vibe.

THE SERVICE (4/5)
Really pleasent service from staff. Just a heads up its order amd pay first.

WORTH IT?
Yup

The fried chicken here is quite delicious, and always well cooked (not greasy, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside). We come here often for the Crispy or Seasoned Fried Chicken - and share box between two people. The sauce is super yum and not spicy.

They also have a Spicy chicken option, which comes with a spicier sauce. My advice is, if you generally stick to a mild spiciness level on most cuisines, then don't go with the Spicy option!

Although the chicken is nice, i don't think it is the best fried chicken store around. I find that without the sauce, the chicken flavours does get a little boring after you've eaten quite a few pieces. Regardless, we still go back heaps anyway! So looks like something about it works.

Cute little fast food place in Newmarket! Authentic Korean fried chicken. Got the half crispy half seasoned, came with some radish on the side. The chicken wasn't oily, flavoring was great and not too salty etc. portion is quite big, would recommend just a cup chicken for takeaway unless your eating with 5 friends HEHEHEHE
Natyo
We ordered half spicy seasoned chicken, half seasoned chicken and the 2 piece crispy chicken and chips.

Pros: seasoned chicken super tasty and the spicy had the perfect kick. Cubed pickled radish is like the ginger you get with sushi - nice palate cleanser. Chips were yum yum - fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the out. Liquor shop only two shops down with awesome selection of soju!

Cons: 2 piece chicken was a drum and two small random pieces of chicken (?)

Suggestions : Wish they provided plastic gloves like I see in kdramas ! Also, go for boned as the meat tends to be juicier !

Good chicken however few things to note. Twice had headaches after eating there..also diarrhoea once or twice. Also they must be the stingiest restaurant I have ever come across. They charge us 50 cents for a squirt of ketchup in a little sauce dish. They don't give you any water ( even tap) you MUST purchase water or other type of drink. So stingy on serviettes.. Side dish radishes etc. If they are so stingy on these types of things then I can extrapolate it to them being stingy on ingredients such as oil?? Reusing frying oil too many times is known to be bad.... Hmmm thoughts on my headaches.....

I was at a loose end on takeaway Friday and this place popped up on a search. I ordered one spiced chicken and chips and one crispy chicken and chips. Warning #1 watch out because the chicken pieces have bones inside; I almost broke a tooth hoeing into the first nugget. There was variability in the pieces, some were very moist inside but some were a bit dry. The coating was crispy but not oily. The chips were nicely fried. Warning #2 the spicy chicken sauce is hot! It smacked me hard right from the first bite, the pieces were coated in a sweet sticky very hot sauce. Not the best I've eaten but who can resist crispy bite size chicken pieces?

I went back tonight and ordered half chicken crispy boneless pieces which were more tender and juicy. I think I fell victim to ordering the wrong dish last time. The pickled turnip pickle accompaniment provides a refreshing contrast It pushes my rating up past 3.75 close to 4

There are a lot of my favourites, it was hard to choose which to get but ended up getting the Chicken and Chips. Taking a first bite, it brings back all the memories from the time I was eating chicken and chips instead of fish and chips. Great substitute to fish.

They were really kind when they served me, the waiting time wasn't that long either because the chicken was already cooked and was cooling down.

Inside has that Korean vibe, the chairs and tables are what you would expect at home in the dining room. The tables look strong though. The best chicken takeaway in Newmarket indeed.

A beautiful aroma hits you as you get out of your car at the Wilson car park at Newmarket. Explore the origins and you find No. 1 Chicken. So gave it a shot and it was magic on the taste buds for a while after that.
Ambience: Its more of a "take away" place, but they have a couple of tables and chairs to sit down and have an explosion in your mouth
Taste: Beats KFC miles out of the competition
Service: the two ladies handling the outlet were all smiles and quick with churning out your self service trays
Value for money: Some may say its pricey, but I say for the price you pay, the quantity you get is laaaaarge
Verdict: Please do go and savour some of the absolute awesomeness

Very good deep fried chicken rather small menu though so they could add things to it but overall veru happy with the meal I had there will definitely be heading back there at some point.
FoodiePhysician
Had the half and half fried chicken and marinated spicy fried chicken.

I used to think this place had the best fried chicken in Auckland; could finish a whole box in a sitting by myself. Its certainly changed a but for the worst.

I have had this before; used to be pretty spicy regardless of choice but spices have dulled down a bit. And portion sizes as I recall used to be a bit bigger and the chicken used to be crispier; its a bit softer now especially the marinated chicken. It tastes almost soggy. The more I eat the blander it gets.

Hmm, not as good as I remember, 2 Yums

This place is awesome! They have a very small menu but cook everything deepfried on it to perfection! The chicken is super crispy and super juicy. If you're a lover of fried chicken I cannot recommend this place enough. My favourite is the spicy seasoned chicken in a cup... spicy popcorn chicken perfection!
TinaS
Ordered seasoned and crispy chicken (with bones) and I can see why they call themselves no 1 chicken! Crispy chicken skin is super crispy and spicy. The seasoned one has alot of flavour in it. I wish they serve other Korean dishes though...

Service was super fast..Tried the boneless seasoned chicken in a cup! It was like popcorn chicken but better.might try something else the next time we go there

Ok my son asking for a cup of chicken which drew me in, which i will agree is tasty. However i am very disappointed with the crispy chicken and chips combo. Sold as 2pieces only to get home and get a drumstick + cube size of nuggets that looks like it was part of drumstick? Query this only to be told yes that is the 2nd piece which is a thigh? Go figure?? Really?? Not much else to rate on as this was my first and will be my last trip here.

Very delicious with a few drinks hehe! We got the half and half. I recommend you getting the one with bones in them for more of an authentic feel to it haha. Otherwise great flavours !

Great chicken place and i prefer mine crispy! Fish is good too :) my chicken pieces were quite small though otherwise id give a 5. The cups were amazing and great quantity for the price. Overall great eat.
Brian
Love the fish & chips... cheap and yum only around $6 for two hokkis and chips !!! as well as the popcorn chicken :)))))))))))))))) chicken is ok..

A Korean twist on fried chicken. It's like kfc chicken but 10 times better with more flavour, crispness and without the grease. I had the cup of spicy boneless seasoned chicken. It looks small but actually it's very filling! The chicken was super tender and fried batter was perfect. For only $6 it's worth it. If you are craving for fried chicken this joint is worth checking out either takeaway or dine in.

The boneless crispy chicken are really tasty and crispy. Also love the seasoned chicken with chili sauce. It's a place for a quick bite and it can't go wrong!! Highly recommended.

This place is always busy. I like their fish and chips dinner pack. The batter is very light and crispy and you get a decent serving of chips. Only negative point is that I've gone here several times in the weekend and the have run out of fish or chips - or sometimes both!! Really running out of chips 😂

This place sells Korean Fried chicken, and is probably the best you can find in New Zealand. Their seasoned fried chicken, (양념치킨) is fried chicken mixed in with a spicy sauce, which is great, but it gets too salty to eat if you eat a lot of it. The Crispy Chicken, (후라이드 치킨), is too bland, so I would rather get a KFC rather than that. But good rating overall, restaurant was clean and staff were friendly.
Adam Kerr
The chicken here is amazing but be warned the spicy chicken is very spicy! Right to my taste.

Although, I felt like fish and chips also, big mistake. The fish was Tarakihi, apparently. The Hoki wasn't available, and we think we know why. The fish was obviously not fresh at all, it had a strong odour, to me it smelled like ammonia, to my partner it was similar to the blue cheese we had last night but way less appealing. We are now worried if we are likely to have food poisoning or not.

If you can't be bothered serving a quality item, take it off the menu. I'll change my rating if you can explain why we threw your fish out tonight.

We need more Korean fried chicken place. Fried chicken and beer combo is the best. We like going to No.1 chicken because you can opt for boneless fried chicken instead the usual wings. Finger licking good! I personally prefer the plain taste, the spicy one is not bad too (not for those who can't handle chilli though). I like how they give you radish as side dish.
Cindy Lin
No 1 Chicken is the place I always go to if I ever feel like fried chicken. The staff are always friendly and the food is often fast. The boneless fried chicken is very well seasoned, not dry at all, and is always a good amount for around $14. Only thing I would criticise is that if you are wanting to eat at the restaurant is that it is very small and gets really crowded at times.
Diner8Here
These guys first appeared at 88 broadway near BK newmarket and relocated to present site at the ole JAX wine/bar site, one day i ordered 2 piece chicken n chips and gave me a drumstick cut in half, chips were good and another time i just wanted chips only for my pie (brought else where by the way) and turned down order as not allowed, even though listed on menu for 4$, i dunno!?
very popular place for the local Japanese/Korean lodgers at nearby apartments though.
If u smell fry chicken fumes at the start of Remmers road, no.1 chicken is nearby...
Medium_Rare
Overhyped.

That'll be the word I use to describe my dining experience at No 1 Chicken.

The spicy chicken wasn't really spicy and the sauce looked faint and unappealing on the fried chicken.

In terms of portion, I think it was a little less than expected and there was just an overall sense of disappointment from the table after reading the fabulous reviews others have given.

Showstopper: Nice and dry, the chicken wasn't covered in grease, which is a strong positive.

Overall Grade: B
Emma Patricia Katili
Boneless, crispy fried chicken. They only give a small serving of mustard with the chicken but the korean pickles are nice and the chicken doesn't really need extra sauce anyway.

No 1 chicken is definitely ranks pretty high in the fried chicken scene in Auckland. We dropped by around 6 and the place was packed! We decided to grab the half spicy seasoned and half crispy chicken to go.

Chicken is cooked fresh so takes a few minutes but totally worth it. The spicy chicken was definitely my favourite. Crunchy and covered in spicy ish sweet sauce, probably the best chicken I've had in a while now. The crispy chicken was simple but still quite yum. I'd definitely come back!!

Lost marks on service- lady at counter was super unfriendly when we were deciding what to order and also super unfriendly when we asked for chopsticks.. but dont let that deter you from trying this nommy chicken!!
A Tale Of Two Tummies
Food ordered:
Crispy Half & Seasoned Half
Chips
1.5L Drink

Bill: $35.50

Big tummy: We were introduced to No 1 Chicken courtesy of a FB article revealing the "Top 10 Fried Chicken Joints" in Auckland. The article itself was pretty flimsy, as it included a lot of places which I personally wouldn't put in my Top 50, let alone Top 10... but one thing that stood out was all the comments asking where 'N1C' was on the list. Trusting the general public more than some finicky food "critic", we decided N1C would be the one place we'd try out - and we certainly weren't disappointed. Their seasoned chicken is quite possibly the tastiest form of fried chicken I have come across in Auckland, while the fried chicken would have to rate right there as well. They also provide a little side dish of pickled radish with their meals, which cuts through the oiliness and sweetness of the chicken perfectly. Admittedly, the chips are nothing special, but you don't go to a place called 'No 1 Chicken' for the chips. Definitely one of my new go-to's for fried chicken.

Little tummy: I looooove fried chicken, so was excited to discover a new store full of highly-rated fried goodness. We ordered the half/half option so we could try both their traditional fried chicken and their seasoned one. My boyfriend preferred the seasoned chicken, while I definitely preferred the fried - which worked perfectly, cause it left more fried chicken for me haha. My only criticism would be that the little plates of sauce/mustard provided with the chips are seriously tiny... like enough sauce for maybe a few chips, then it's gone. We'd definitely come back for the chicken though.

As the name of this restaurant, it's truly the number one chicken. The spicy crispy chicken is very awesome with reasonable price. Compare to the Kiwi style crispy chicken, I prefer here.
CrazyCatLady_EmmaC
The chicken taste amazing and fresh. Love their crispy chicken and spicy chicken. Would recommand takeaway because the restaurant is not very big.

After passing this place so many time after work.. Finally I decided to try some chicken. I went for the spicy chicken, I ordered boneless half chicken to share with friends,, $15 which is quite reasonable.. But I'm not sure how they measure the potion of each serve cuz I saw some got more some got less.. Did they count by prices?? 😏😏 if so I think I had about 10-15 pieces in my box, but they are quite big thou...
The chicken came with white daikon pickle, which i didn't like at the first bite but after the second tried it taste better haha.. The spicy chicken was actually rather sweet for me.. But after keep eating more it turned to be spicy and taste better just like the pickle haha for some reason 😂 that's what happened to me lol

The waiting time was a bit too long if you are rush for the bus, cuz there was only 1 order before me but I was waited over 15mins for just some deep fried chicken😐.. Anyway the chicken was good,, so waiting is okay 😊(if you are not in rush of course)

I am completely addicted to the seasoned fried chicken, love it even more when its in the cup as the portion (and price!) is just right for me.

Staff are very friendly and it doesn't take long at all for them to serve the food piping hot and simply mouth watering.

Always coming back here for more!

Having made a promise not to drink during the week, in an attempt to lead a healthier lifestyle, I sometimes find myself waiting, quite impatiently, for Fridays. Not that I've ever been a big drinker, but there is always a bottle of wine or a couple of beers in the reserve. Don't you?. Hurrying home excitedly one such Friday after work, my eyes fall on a sign. No 1 Chicken. Spicy chicken. Oooh. Beer goes with many a good range of dishes, but beer and chicken is like wine and cheese, they are meant to be. Especially in Korea, where there is even an official word for the combo, cementing the bride and groom until death do them part: Chimac. Chi for chicken, mac for macju, Korean for beer. Appropriately, No 1 Chicken is also Korean, and I thought it would be a good occasion to introduce A to the Korean styled spicy popcorn chickens.

Discovering this place was an absolute joy. The crispy chicken is to die for. If KFC made chicken like this, they'd probably make a fortune out of it. I can't pass by this place and not pick up a box of these yummy treats. Even though it's not what could be classed as cheap, the portion and taste make up for it. $13 for a full box of crispy chicken?? Yes please. Definitely worth a try.
Amit Tripuraneni
It is fried chicken and its more like popcorn chicken but the sauces they finish them off in makes it more than a standard fried chicken outlet. Their small pack for $5 will fill you up, so portion sizes are decent. Try their spicy chicken for a real kick.
ShoRt
If you are bored of the regular fried chicken, try this KFC - Korean fried chicken! Get it plain fried or seasoned (make it spicy) for a kick. You can also choose boned or boneless chicken! I recommend the half fried, half spicy seasoned, boneless.

But don't get it for one person... Because you won't finish it if you are a regular eater. Trust me I tried. They obviously do half sizes and also chicken cup if you are not greedy like me.

Not sure how they make it so crispy but it is and it stays that way! So order beforehand for a quick pickup and enjoy it with a beer. Ah....
Jason
not too bad half & half !!! atmosphere was not looking good. service was good ! food tasty was average. price is little bit more cheaper than other chicken shop. fried chicken was not oily. : D

If you want take-away food and into the whole sweet-spicy taste, this is the place for you. Excellent quality and very nice staff as well. Worth your time and money.

The best I had so far!! Ordered the spicy seasoned chicken and for once it's spicy!! I love it. A bit on the pricy side though but the cup version is definitely worth it. Will definitely recommend this if you are looking for authentic korean fried chicken!

I have been here twice , they make decent korean style fried chicken. The price is affordable and the chicken tastes good.

I personally prefer the original crispy chicken over the seasoned one, but the seasoned chicken has a nice garlic scented sweet and sour sauce on top of it which is not too spicy. The chicken comes with a plate of pickled radish and they give u some mustard as dip. Korean fried chicken and beer matches each other so well:)
Mandy
The best Korean fried chicken I've had in Auckland

I absolutely love fried chicken and I'm always on the lookout for good fried chicken that isn't oily and tastes really juicy. No 1 Chicken is definitely the place.

We came here for lunch on Sunday and it wasn't busy at all. We were the only ones there. It is located next to the Wilson Car Park and Bruce Lee Sushi so they recently changed locations. We decided to order half seasoned and half crispy chicken. The ladies that work there are polite but I really wished they wouldn't speak Korean so loudly when customers are there. In my opinion, it's a little rude. We waited about 5-10 mins. The chicken arrived with a side of mustard and radishes. The chicken was really good! It was not oily at all and I felt like I could keep eating the crispy chicken without getting sick of it. The seasoned chicken was really good too but it was very sickening after a few of them.

Picture:
- Half seasoned (left) and half crispy chicken ($27); it comes with a side of mustard and radishes but not pictured

I am in love with their crispy chicken and I will only come here for it but as for the seasoned chicken, I would only have one or two bites. This place has definitely won me over by their original crispy chicken.
Regina McDad
Another fried chicken shop?! NO YOU ARE WRONG it's THE fried chicken shop. The smell of fried chicken always fills up the whole building and carpark . It makes you demand more for their No 1 Chicken. I kid you not.
Hungry Hippo
The first time I tried this place, it was a cold winter's night and I was hungry. The first place that caught my eyes was this small Korean fried chicken restaurant that was near Burger King. I had the boneless seasoned cup chicken and it was unbelievably amazing! It had warmed me up straight away and left me wanting more!
Even though it changed addresses that is by the train station and near Bruce Lee Sushi, I come here with friends whenever I can and I always brag about this place! Simply because the fried chicken, the crunch, when you hear it and bite it, it's absolute heaven!
Kwan-Lyn
My friend who is Korean brought me here when it first opened after trying the chicken here the night before. It was as good as she claimed it to be. Soon, this place was frequented by our wider group of friends for a good month or two. We even started a tally of visits on their wall of photos...

I personally like the boneless crispy half n' seasoned half chicken, to be shared. I find that this combination is a good balance of the almost over-the-top moreishness of the seasoned half chicken, with the less exciting, crispy half. This is accompanied with a complimentary side of cold pickled radish that goes down a treat. I've also tried the whole chicken for both varieties, which some friends argue contain more flavour from the bone, however to me it just isn't as satisfying as a whole piece of meat, without the fussing around and messiness of bones (having said that, I am not the best person who eats off the bone).
Vicki Ko
Love this place!

Both the seasoned chicken and the fried chicken are delicious but I do prefer the seasoned chicken. If you're a small eater like me, the cup seasoned chicken is a good pick. It's enough to make me full, along with some chips - a cheaper option too. Only $6 for the cup chicken! Also, they close quite late so if you're looking for a late dinner/snack, this is the place to go :)
Michelle Huynh
Good ~ the non seasoned one

Shared a bucket with the sis ! Ohh it's good it's crispy and it's not KFC

I still don't like the seasons one
although they have changed the sauce to more garlicky. It's too sugary
would be nice if it was actually spicy ?

Ahh it's fried chicken !! Must give it a 4/5@
Jaya
Came in here after movie on Broadway as we were looking for something easy to eat. Their chicken bites are OK--probably too oily for my taste. Then again, if that's what you're after, this will be a satisfying treat.
FOODFANATICJIMMY
A nice and cosy little restaurant that also specialises in 'yang nyum tong dak,' just like the other restaurant that I reviewed on. Overall, this place is slightly more affordable and 'budget friendly' with 'cup' options to cater the needs for students and people who want a quick snack (but a little less serving than other chicken places). They also had a variety of chicken and chips and fish and chips combinations which was quite convenient. We ordered half of the 'spicy seasoned' chicken along with some chips and a small cup chicken aswell. The cup chicken is a perfect fit for a quick snack or for ladies who want something simple but delicious. Unfortunately, I can't review on their fish quality but their chicken was perfectly seasoned and well cooked. I love spicy food so the spiciness was quite pleasant. Obviously this place is not of a formal setting so nothing fancy here but is perfect for a late night snack or to crave that hunger for chicken! It's MUCH better to takeaway and eat at home since parking is a real hassle and seating is not too fancy. Definately worth trying this place out!
Fairy-Anne Glenn Guiang
The Chicken lived up to the name of this glorified chicken/fish n chips joint. We ordered Crispy Boneless Chicken and we enjoyed it but the amount of sauce was not enough. We had to pay for additional sauce. We we're also surprised that they move to Remuera Road since Zomato still have the old address. The chips is a bit under cook which is way different than what I remembered it to be. The interior was impressive as well to a chicken/fish n chips shop. It is recommended to just do takeaway and eat somewhere else since the parking is impossible in the area. If you want solid chicken satisfaction this is the place to be. Take it home so you can save parking fees and so you can have lil bit extra sauce :)

Awesome chicken and always quick as can be ! My favourite defiantly has to be the cup chicken that's seasoned and reasonable priced.
The chips are tasty and cheap and the staff are friendly and unlike some food places it's always clean.
Sushmita Ann Daswani
Really love their chicken both savoury and plain(crispy)! I think it's a little bit expensive for the portion you get but its all worth I guess. Only fault of this place is the space there's not many tables and it usually gets packed after school.

Time and date : weekday dinner takeaway

Food ordered: crispy chicken and seasoned chicken

Ingredients: cooked and seasoned on the spot

Taste: Finger licking good, especially the spicy fried chicken

Authenticity: very similar to korean street food I had in S.Korea

Enviroment: did not stay as I had it as takeaway

Service: friendly

Cost: 27 for half n half i think

Will I return : definately

No.1 Chicken, in Newmarket, has become a nice addition to my Korean food addiction since a 'spicy chicken' friend discovered it last year. If you're after a quick fix, with really good fries attached, you've found the right place. Their normal fried chicken can be a tad boring but the seasoned boneless chicken is meaty and savoury, not too spicy and very fresh.Nice naughty treat before the movies anyone?
Kirsten
Came here one day after school with friends and decided to try this place out! We ordered the Seasoned Boneless Chicken, and wow, it was delicious! I've always wanted to try out Korean style chicken and I will definitely come here next time!
Cheapster
The chicken. What can I say.

I passed by with a couple of friends while looking for a cheap, filling lunch in Newmarket, and looking inside to see people dining on fried chicken with a sticky sauce looked like the most appetising thing.

The guy behind the counter was friendly despite what seemed somewhat limited English. We went for the half-crispy half-seasoned chicken and one portion of chips to share between the three of us and it came out pretty quickly, and portions were bigger than expected (it really is a whole chicken, in pieces). While the crispy chicken is seasoned minimally (this is good as it's not too salty), the seasoned chicken outshone everything. It's tossed in a thick, sweet, savoury, spicy sauce that has me thinking about it even a couple of days after I've had it. Pickled radish helped to cool the spicy sauce, and for $29 for three it really filled us up.

If you want to experience No. 1 Chicken for all its glory just go with the seasoned chicken. You won't be disappointed.

Decided to try this place out because of all the hype it was receiving. We ordered half n half (crispy/seasoned) it was a little expensive for t.a. fast food. We loved how our order came with a bag of pickled radish helps cut down the oil. Chicken was good and made to order, so it was fresh and crispy. Only complaint is that the crispy chicken is a dry, but its not a biggie. Will come back when I'm craving fried chicken.

Dam you, was so excited to get my two pieces of chicken and chips takeaway, when I opened my box I found half a drum stick and one chicken nugget like chicken bit full of bone. The drum stick was half a drum stick given there was bone on one side and a small portion of over cooked chicken on the other side. Never again that was an awful experience, I hope none of my friends go there either

Came across this place after searching for a Korean fried chicken shop online. Bought their fried chicken and like what I ate. Definitely will come back to visit this shop and highly recommend this place anyone who loves Korean cuisine

I am from Korea originally, and have fond memories of eating half/half Korean fried chicken. No 1 Chicken was delicious, and was quite good value for money. It would have been better if the chicken pieces didn't look like they were leftovers from carving out the meaty parts of a chicken.
