Review Shanghai Chinese Restaurant - Hamilton

I was so impressed by this place, the food quality was outstanding and the portions are large. Presentation is great. Honestly even if I had this in china I'd be impressed. Literally the best Chinese food I've had in NZ. They were busy but the food still came out in about 10 minutes or so. I especially recommend the 生煎包 (like a big meat bun with soup in it). Pretty affordable overall. We were a table of 3 adults and we all ate till we're full. Would definitely go back.

We were a party of 8 tonight and we were catered for very well. We had an amazing eating experience. The food was delicious. The portion sizes were good service was great and it was all very reasonably priced. We will definitely go back .

Could not fault the food ordered way too much but every plate was perfect 😋 staff were great. Peking duck pancake was perfection. Inside small and cosy could be bigger but on all 10 out of 10

I read the comments here and found many people are not satisfied with their service. I went here tonight and found the food does taste pretty good and the service wasn't that horrible tho not as friendly as in other restaurants. Price there are quite reasonable as well. It still worth a try anyway.

Tasty, quality food: stir fried pork, mixed mushrooms & sizzling egg plant with pork filling. Soopa Yummy 😋 & BYO is a plus.

Best chinese restaurant in Rototuna. We've been here a few times and the food is always good quality and generous portion sizes. Definitely worth going.

Terrible customer service, it's almost like they don't even want you there. Food is mediocre.<br/>I suggest take your money elsewhere for better food and service.

Came here for a day work trip few months back. Wow, this place has great shangahinese authentic food. Especially their deep fried dishes. Have contemplated multiple times to drive all the way from Auckland just to eat again. I thought hamilton would lack Chinese food options but this I would say trumps all other Shanghainese restaurants out our way.

Amazing food! Xiao long bao is yum and everything tastes so good. Atmosphere is great. Very Oriental. Service is nice. Crew is very helpful and prompt.

Everything was really nice. Loved the sesame fried balls 😋. very fast with bringing out the food. Good size meals, and good prices. The menu had lots of options.

Such a delicious place to go to! Wish more people knew about this restaurant as it doesn’t get to recognition it deserves. We always enjoy every meal we have there and it’s such a nice place to eat with decent prices and just amazing food. Always really fast service, food comes out in 5-10 minutes after ordering! would recommend this to anyone that asks

Shop was not so big, with few decent size tables, perfect for big meals with bunch of people. <br/>Ordering was easy as they had a seperate english menu with pictures of the food. <br/>Quality and quantity of food were amazing. Big portion with huge chunks of meat, and very well balanced taste. They weren't too greasy like other Chinese Restaurants and I liked how they served rice in a big pot for us.<br/>One staff there, slim Chinese girl with glasses, she was pretty damn good at sales, upsold extra dishes, even spoke some Korean to amaze us.

Absolutely amazing food. Simply delicious. I ordered the fungi noodle soup, Shanghai pork buns and pork stir fried noodles. Each one had incredible flavour and was made with fresh ingredients. <br/>My new favourite restaurant.

2 Jun 2018, me , my husband and auntie .<br/>Staff is friendly, next time better book table first, cause almost no more table.<br/>We order <br/>八珍上素 stir fried vegetable combination, <br/>糖醋鱼片 stir fried fish sweet and sour, and <br/>杏鲍菇炒鹿肉 Pleurotus eryngii fried venison。<br/>Everything is fine, just the sweet and sour fish too sweet .

A cute place restaurant with such lovely decor. The staff was really friendly with excellent service. The food was amazing with great prices for the portion size. Keen to come here again!!

Very authentic Shanghai style food. Every dish we tried was tasty and definitely recommended. It was quiet for Saturday lunch but the service was fairly good for the amount of food we ordered. They offer a wide range of dishes so it may be hard to pick a dish. However, they have a menu book that has photos of the dish and also a screen where they show the food. We will still come back to try the other yummy dishes.

After reading all the low rating comments, me and my colleagues decided to pay a visit and see this rude counter lady. So we went there last week for our food-adventure company lunch... the food was excellent even from a Taiwanese dude's standard, the place was clean and tidy. It is definitely a place I will go back to.<br/><br/>So... What about the service... well... I think it might just be a culture misunderstanding after I meet her in person. When I had business trips in China, it is quite common to see the staffs work in a restaurant serve without smiles whether you are Asian-looking or not. It's just the way they work - smile is not part of their service. Take the previous owner of the Kiso Sushi in Cambridge as an example, the wife was really unfriendly. You will even see her face gets less friendly when you order too much... But man, I miss this old Japanese couples, they made such beautiful sushi...

On Friday (26/05/2017) I went to order dinner at Shang Hai Chinese Restaurant in Rototuna, I ordered 1 Chicken Fried Rice and 2 Fried Rice Noodles(sliced Beef). When I got home I realized that both Fried Rice Noodles were only filled 3/4 of the bowl, I thought this was odd as I had ordered the exact same items on Tuesday (23/05/2017) and on three other separate occasions and received full bowls. For all three items this cost +/- $41, So I took my order back and ask why this had happened. The YOUNG girl at the front desk started explaining why but her explanation did not make sense to me. She grabbed my items and went to speak to the chefs then told me to have a seat and wait. I asked her how long the wait would be and she RAISED her voice at me and said she doesn't know and told me “go sit”. I asked her to go and ask the chef how long but she refused. While I was waiting a man came out from the kitchen and started talking to the young girl at the front desk, she pointed at me, the man looked at me and they both started laughing. <br/><br/>On previous visits to this restaurant I have received very BAD customer service from this young girl. She always seems irritated, she is always on her phone and has no way of greeting and taking orders!<br/><br/>She gives off a very bad vibe as if she doesn’t want to serve customers of colour/non Chinese-Asian descent. <br/><br/>I will NOT be going back to this restaurant!

This restaurant is so so dirty and is a total fire hazard the staff are so rude can't speak english, wipe food from the floor with the rag they use to clean the filthy tables. They put sirimi in fried rice and it takes forever to get takeaways whereby you must ask them 3 or 4 times if the food is ready which they seem to produce from under the bench. not happy with this restaurant and i don't know why health and safety haven't been there to close them down yet.

Very Shanghai style. Still busy even at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.So fulfilled with 4 dishes. Will be there again next time to Hamilton. Recommended.

Had our first takeaway experience last night as we have dined in twice before. Ordered a full peeking duck 24hrs in advance as required & were very excited about it also got a chicken with cashew meal. When we got home we opened it up & could not for the life of me figure out what extra dish they had given us by mistake, maybe a thank u for spending $85 we weren't sure. After really looking thru it we figured we were looking at either they had given us all of the duck bones with 3bits of onion from the peeking duck or someone else's scraps of a meal. It was so bizarre we couldn't believe it. They are lovely when dining in but we will be careful to examine our next takeaway from them.

Food was authentic and tasty and would recommend the dish that we had.  The service, however, was terrible and we had a really bad experience.<br/><br/>We ordered takeaway and had to wait 45 minutes, only to find that our food had been prepared a fair time prior but no one thought to let us know our order was ready even though we were sitting there and were the second customers to arrive.  When we finally approached the counter to ask for our order (seeing that a customer arriving much later after us had gotten theirs) we were asked whether or not we paid which added to the anger.  Then when we commented on the fact that we had been waiting in the shop and that someone could have let us know, the waiter just shook his head and ignored our comment (twice).  <br/><br/>Sitting in the shop for 45 minutes, we were also not impressed with either of the two waiters in the restaurant who did not seem interested in being either polite or competent.  We were very upset by the experience, more so because the waiter did not seem to care that we waited for so long or felt the service could have been improved.  <br/><br/>Admittedly the dish was very nice and we would order from them again, but won't be expecting any good manners.  Compliments to the chef, but none to the young men serving the customers.

Authentic Chinese in the heart of Rototuna.<br/><br/>Small restaurant, a little bit cramped. Parties of 4 should have no problem. Any more should book to ensure you get one of the two large tables. Recommend booking anyway as the restaurant fills up quick.<br/><br/>Could benefit from having another waits-person on as the waitstaff seemed spread a little thin. Food comes out quick but service relatively slow.<br/><br/>Delicious food, good portions, fair prices. Will definitely be going back soon.

With an increasing Asian influx in Hamilton, many Asian diners are popping up all over the city. However my experience at these places have been disappointing due to the lack of authenticity.<br/><br/>This place in Rotouna however is straight legit Chinese food, none of that takeaway oily stuff but authentic food which is priced extremely fairly. The portions here are mammoth sized and overall my experience here was awesome.<br/><br/>Showstopper: the noodles where by far the best tasting, chewy and wholesome.<br/><br/>Overall grade: A-<br/><br/>
