We would rate this restaurant a 3.2. We ordered the spaghetti bolognese, because they ran out of lasagne. The bolognese was nothing special, just plain spaghetti and marinara sauce with some meat. We also ordered the pork belly with cranberry and apple sauce, which in theory sounds fabulous - but in reality was quite disappointing. The pork belly must be old because it was as tough as nails to saw through, and the whole table shook when we tried to slice the pork belly. This is not the kind of pork belly that melts in your mouth, unfortunately. They were also out of every juice except for orange juice and they were also out of ginger beer. This restaurant certainly has inventory issues, and service is pretty damn average - the waiter was polite but the manager/owner was not friendly at all, when we asked for marinara sauce on the side to dip the garlic bread. This restaurant is nothing special - interiors are also drab with fluorescent lighting. Definitely not a romantic restaurant or one that you would want to go to as a tourist visiting Hamilton.
I was hesitant at first because of the rating but when I started reading the menu I started to get a lil excited. My husband had pepperoni pizza it's refreshing not to have a thin crust base it was soft, light & fluffy not doughy, very yummy I on the other hand had selection of sea food it's a big portion with meaty half crab on top jumbo prawns biggest I've eaten in NZ with tasty fish, squid & mussles which by the way are cooked perfectly. I would rate it 5 for food but the bread that comes with it is too soft & buttery the dish is already rich a nice plain just baked white loaf bread would be perfect but all in all it's was awesome. I'll definetely come back when I go to Hamilton.
All 3 of us enjoyed a really nice evening at Piccolo. All 3 meals were really nice, well presented and well cooked. Garlic prawns were delicious and came with a caper sauce , seafood in tomato sauce was really nice and came with ciabatta to mop up with. The steak with peppercorn sauce was really tasty and cooked perfectly. So pleased I didn't read the reviews before hand ..... our experience was great. I took tiramisu dessert home and it was as good as I've eaten at other Italian restaurants.
Have been here a few times and the food is great! I love the pizzas, there is a heap of variety of flavours and theyr all quiet unique.. i do think that its a little expensive for the serving you get.
Decided on a whim to eat at this place last night after not hearing much about it and was pleasantly surprised.
Although the place is a little small and we got a funny table plonked beside the counter but the food was great and more than enough.
We got the garlic pizza, the scallopine, the pollo mignon and two glasses of wine for $60, a very good price for the amount of food.
After coming in and ordering our mains and sides I decided to have a look at the reviews. After a not so pleasant read from the 2009 and 2010 reviews I got the feeling we made a mistake. After just leaving I can say that what we experienced was nothing like the 2009-2010 reviews, the chicken was tender the mushrooms were juicy. The potato was real potato and creamy. The service was good and will be going again soon
On a friends recommendation, we came to this restaurant for lunch. We each ordered a seafood pasta main, as well as an entree and a dessert.
We found that the Mussel entree was both ample as well as delicious. The Mussels were perfectly cooked and the accompanying broth was magnificent.
The mains were all greatly appreciated (the pasta was of perfect el dente consistency and the accompanying sauce and seafood were very good) and we found that the desserts were also of a good quality.
While the decor wasn't as overly "Italian Peasant" as most Italian restaurants, it was clean and well presented. The waitress was friendly and helpful and was neatly dressed.
We each had an Italian beer with our meals from the drinks menu (sorry can't comment on the Wine list as we did not partake).
Overall we recommend this restaurant to others and will be doing so to our work colleagues and friends.
My only comment on what others might have written would be why go to an Italian restaurant and then not order Italian food?
This is my favourite place to have lunch. It is cheap, the serving size is huge and I love the waitress.
I went there at the end of last year for a lunch with my girlfriends... LOVED IT! The food was scrumptious and creamy, definitely worth the money. Not pricey and it met both standards of quality and quantity. The chicken fettucine was amazing! But the lasagne might be a bit too greasy for some, even though we ordered the lean option. But the best part was definitely the tiramisu! At $8, it is much cheaper than some other restaurants nearby. Smelt wonderful, tasted wonderful... Would never hesitate to go back again :)
