The Hogget is a small bar and restaurant with a big outdoor area that would be beautiful on a nice day. The staff were really nice and provided good service. The drinks list is small but well chosen and there is a good range of dishes on the menu. However, we felt a bit let down by our main meals. My steak was cooked properly but over seasoned i.e. very peppery. Likewise my fries were too salty. The salad was good - it was a bit more interesting than most green salads. My friend's chicken dish was very dry. He asked for no bacon as he doesn't eat pork, but the dish still had bacon in it. The apple pie, however, was excellent. Attractively presented, it had lots of yummy custard, the right amount of ice cream and cream, and a light flaky pastry that made the dish light and not at all stodgy, unlike most apple pies. I think with a few tweaks this could be an excellent restaurant.

Think of it as a resturant with a bar. Great for casual drink or a full on meal. Menu small but quality food. You would struggle to find better food this far off a main highway. Staff are excellent from bar staff to kitchen dish washer! They will all stop and have a friendly chat. Well managed. Don't expect a cheap meal but do expect quality. 3 taps of a nz pale ale and craft lager along with the usual mass produced beers. Locally sourced meats on the menu.new menu just out... even better.

Friendly staff. The fish and chips were well cooked and nicely presented. Not a large choice 3 on the mainsand 2 on the desert. I thought it was a bit on the pricey side for what was offered.
Very good. Excellent roast dinner with great flavour. Even have a local Amberley Pilsener style beer which is also stocked in a bar in the Riverside market on Oxford Terrace in Christchurch.
That beer brewed in Amberley is I think an excellent craft beer.
Service couldn't be faulted.
I just hope that more people support the restaurant/ bar in Hawarden. I t could form part of a lovely family weekend excursion.
Other foods will obviously be included on the menu but this was a dinner for a service club so a cheap price for a set course. A delicious apple crumble followed the main.
Won't hesitate to visit again.
WOW. Great service, friendly staff. Amazing food. Pork belly entree was to die for. We are going back in 2 days. Recommend to anyone on the area I would good far as to say it is a destination not a side attraction. Congrats to the chef and the staff. Thanks.
Food was delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were warm, friendly and extremely helpful. The lovely lady working front of house entertained my two young boys and made going out for lunch so enjoyable! We will certainly be back with family and friends!
We enjoyed Eggs Benedict with a generous quantity of salmon. It was very delicious. The service was excellent and personal. It just so happened that the horse show was in progress across the road which was a bonus. All in all a nice place to visit and to have a meal and a drink. Recommended to all.
