Have had numerous servings in the last couple of years and have been satisfied with the quality and portions of food. Seems lots of others have not, but if they are comparing the quality and standard from years ago then it's not all that fair in my opinion. Sure, they are going to continue to use the previous accolade of 'Best in NZ', but who wouldn't! Of course the prices are high and drinks are expensive I mean after all it's Fish'N'Chips at the end of the day and I have definitely had better elsewhere but if your after a fresh piece of bluenose some calamari and a cold one to wash it down while sitting right over the Mangonui harbour it comes at a price these days! PS it's always very clean and tidy considering the numbers that go through there, and I have never had rude or ignorant service there.
I think some of the reviews below are a bit harsh. If you want cheap takeaways from a soulless corner shop you've come to the wrong place.
We hardly ever eat fish & chips, but when we do we happily drive 45 min north from Kerikeri and pay a premium price to eat beautifully cooked bluenose over the water.
NZ's best fish and chips would be stretching it (anyone actually know where that is?) but they are very very good.
You can pick up some foul greasies cheaply at your local, or come here and treat yourselves.
yup. I agree. Best fish n chips perhaps in the entire world... better than London these days. But try them with traditional malt vinegar people. It's the best!
Visited about a month ago. The food tasted amazing, so fresh, along with an awesome view and a cold beer. Watch out for the gorgeous young blond behind the bar!
This is one fish and chip restaurant/cafe that has it all right, from the perfect fresh fish battered perfectly to the free fresh lemon slices, and the excellent coffee machine in the dining area. I have brought visiting friends and family from overseas here, and more recently clients on my landyachting adventures. The place is famous with good reason. Here's a hint; try your chips with a light drizzling of lemon juice - it's a favourite of mine :)
We eat here all the time for our fish n chips and even thought it is a 2hr round trip from home, its worth it on a summer's evening. Take all our guests there and recommend it to anyone who will listen.
Favourite fish is blue nose and usually two bits of fish and some chips are more than enough for one person. Fresh lemon is provided but you will have to pay for the bread (white or brown) and tomato sauce.
Have met several people who just love it too.
Food and service very good.
Love the place - with special views across the harbour:)
I had the pleasure of being taken to lunch at the world famous Mangonui Fish Shop, last week. It would have to be the freshest fish I have ever eaten. This licensed fish & chippery is built on piles out over the harbour and has fantastic views. The place was humming and had a great atmosphere. The draft beer was lovely and cold and had a good head on it. I will be making it my business to return one day.
This fish and chips shp offers a feast for the senses. Nestled in a picturesque location, it boasts a beautiful view that complements the freshness of its seafood. The fish is impeccably fresh, and the chips are golden perfection. Each bite is a symphony of flavors, from the crispy exterior to the succulent, flavorful fish within. The delightful combination of a scenic setting and delicious fare creates a memorable dining experience. For those craving a taste of the sea with a side of serenity, this fish and chips spot delivers a culinary masterpiece against a stunning backdrop.
Loved the Fish and chips here. Freshly cooked and very reasonably priced. Ordered Lemon Fish, battered prawns and Calamari. All items were delicious and freshly made. The ambiance is nice too. Overlooking the marina bay. Would recommend to anyone.
Lots of comments that it’s touristy but well worth the visit. The staff are friendly and helpful. Nice atmosphere with open plan seating area. Heaters are provided if it’s cold. Great selection of fresh fish. The fish was cooked perfectly with a light crispy batter and flaky texture. I recommend the Blue nose with fat chips. Prices are a bit high but you are paying for the experience. Definitely worth a stop for a delicious meal if you are in the area.
Good local fish and chips shop. I agree with other reviews that they are overpriced. Lemon Fish was quite small and chips were small amount compared to their price. But crispy and fresh fish and chips. Nice outside deck dining area. It was very busy, so we waited for 20 min to get our orders. I think it is worth going there to try.
This was bustling on a Tuesday evening. We had fish and chips, battered prawns, beef burger and curry sauce. Food was great. The location sitting over the water with the wind howling through from all directions was something else. Glad to have a heater to sit next to. A great experience of in the area.
SHARKS!!! I don't know if it's visible in the pic but there were 2 sharks swimming next to this restaurant! 😲 The cook told us they were there often.
Also very good fish and chips. I don't even like fish and I ate it with delight. 👍
Absolutely the best fish and chips I ever had. The fish is fresh and you can easily taste that. Apart from that, it’s not even too expensive. Worth it
Banging fish and chips! Everything was cooked to perfection, I really recommend coming here. If I'm ever in the area again I will absolutely come back. 🐟🍟
This was the best fish and chip 🍟 shop I have ever been to in NZ. I was so suppried finding pickled eggs 🥚 and mushy peas 🫛.the food was fantastic and the prices were reasonable. The perfect spot to stop and enjoy a meal overlooking the water..welldone Mangonui fish shop. I will be back.
Very cool. It was one of the things we needed to do as part of the Northland experience. It did not disappoint. Fish was so good, not good, so good! You need to go here. Value for money! Decent price but in terms if the food. Worth every cent. This is value! And cool!
