Review Tastes Of Malaysia - Manukau

Kay Liew
This resturaunt is located in a little food hall/court. Which has a communal seating area. Just heads up that the parking lot cna get quite chaotic during mealtimes, and you might not get a parking spot easily. But among the other food stalls here, I really needed to have a laksa. It didn't disappoint. Was really hearty and filling and exactly what my tastebuds remember. The roti canai is deceptively larger than expected. Which I struggled to eat after having a bowl of laksa. But the flavours are on point, and I'm very happy.

Had lunch at the Food Junction in Manukau. Food was delicious and hot. There's a few food outlet there. We also had Korean and Chinese food.

Love their roti canai. Roti was freshly made after customer had made the order. The man making the roti was nice, friendly and helpful. Will comeback again and again.

They serve by far the most authentic Malaysian food. Food is cooked fresh as they are super busy. Soku the owner chef is a magician when it comes to Roti Canai as he cooks it fresh right in front of you. His food is light, non greasy, aromatic, spiced with the perfect herbs and value for money. Obviously without bells and whistles as they are in a busy food court in Manukau.

Provide authentic Malaysian food with a friendly smile. But serve A bit slow when you are the one just put the order.

Beautiful, unfiltered tastes of Malaysia. I highly recommend the stir fried noodles - lots of great wok heat flavor. Ask for medium spicy if you’re a spice lover!

I simply adore the chicken curry with roti canai from Taste Of Malaysia in Food Junction Manukau. It’s the best roti canai I have tried and the curry is always flavoured to preferred spiciness. I love dipping the bread into the very spicy flavoursome curry as it’s so delicious. The owner is always so happy and cheerful and it’s always interesting watching him make the roti fresh with tossing the dough in the air to aerate and stretch out the bread to make it light and flaky. Highly recommended!

Char kuey teow made by Indian chef is very authentic. Better than a lot of Chinese ones. Don't forget to ask for extra spicy.

Quick service and friendly meal was flavorsome and arrived on a hot cast iron plate so stayed warm right throughout the meal very tasty!

Best spot for Malaysian Roti canai. Made fresh and cannot be beaten for taste. Don't miss it.

My favorite place for laksa and Roti. Our family have been coming here for years we love it

Great food at a great price. The owner is a very nice and customer focused man, he ensures great service and great food. I will definitely return there on my next trip to New Zealand. Enjoyed my few visits to the place during this trip.

First time trying the sweet roti canai with banana. It is absolutely delicious! Sweet, buttery hot ans flaky.

Very upmarket. Amazing watching roti being made by spinning it in the air. These roti are made from high quality flour. Different from Indian roti. Really love the egg roti with a mild curry. Unless you like very very hot curry ask for mild! Its a Malay thing. Very open to requests for special diet changes. Will tell you if a request can't be done. Favourite place.

Having worked in hospitality for a number of years, I’m very patient and empathetic towards those in the trade. I, along with my large family, are regular customers to the Food Junction. On this occasion we arrived at a very quiet time so ordering times were very quick from all stores. I came to Tastes of Malaysia and asked the girl who served me if the sweet roti bread was available. She checked with the owner and he had told her 10-15 minutes waiting time. So I paid and proceeded onto further shops to make purchases. After 15 minutes I returned to Tastes of Malaysia in the hope that the roti breads were being made, if not completed already. I stood around for 5 minutes waiting while the workers were all in the back of the shop talking amongst themselves. I ended up going back to my table to waste a bit of time before returning to pick up my order. After 30 minutes I find a seat near the shop and await the roti’s (baring in mind I am the only awaiting customer during this waiting time) The owner called out my order, and I stood up just about to thank him before he slams my order on the bench and proceeds to tell me angrily “next time you order a meal”. A bit confused I said excuse me??? And he snaps at me once again telling me NEXT TIME YOU ORDER A MEAL OR I WONT MAKE YOUR FOOD. So I calmly told him I will no longer make any future purchases from his store. He then starts to make comments about me as I grab my food and walk away. when I got stuck into my food, the roti was not freshly made and was very rubbery and chewy so was most likely heated up pre made roti which I still struggle to understand how it take half an hour to prepare warmed up premade roti for $18?!!! I was extremely appalled at the service I was provided, being their only customer during the 30 min wait and no one making the roti bread during the recommended waiting time, I have told many friends and family about the owner of this shop and have had similar stories shared. we will all no longer be purchasing here. It’s a shame as I work very near to the junction and eat here almost every week.

Love the way he cooks. Roti Chenai is a long time favorite from here! The food is freshly done, fast and tasty. The Nasi Lemak is also delicious. Feels like it was made in Malaysia!

Came here just today for lunch and to meet up with friends. I have been in the Food Junction before but never tried the Tastes Of Malaysia restaurant.<br/>I ordered the Roti Canai with chicken curry. It took about 20mins to arrive which was quite reasonable as the roti was being freshly made. <br/>My food had arrived but it actually wasn’t my food as it seemed to be a lamb curry instead of chicken. I went over to the counter and they quickly changed it to the right order. Seems to be a new staff member that is still getting the hang of everything but that didn’t seem to worry me too much. <br/>My food was nice and hot and I dug straight in. The Chicken was so tender and moist and the roti went so well with the curry. I absolutely enjoyed my meal and was stuffed by the end of it. The service was normal and I didn’t expect too much from them. <br/>Overall I really enjoyed my meal and my friends enjoyed what they had as well. This place is worth a try!

Ordered the plain roti canai with curry chicken which comes with 2 pieces of roti and one bowl of curry chicken that had 2 pieces of chicken.<br/><br/>Before ordering, I asked whether the roti was freshly made and he pointed to the griddle and said 'yea'. Unfortunately, the roti canai arrived so quickly which indicated it was pre-made and kept warm in a container like some roti canai shops do in Malaysia. So I tried it and the texture does indeed tell me that it was pre made as the dough was slightly tough and chewy and the first piece of roti was fairly crispy on one side but the second piece was not crispy at all.<br/><br/>the Roti still had a good taste though and the chicken curry was good. this is the only reason I am giving it a 2 star otherwise it would be a one star because the seller was not fully forthcoming that the roti was pre-made instead of freshly made.

Best friedrice and chowmein. Both the chicken and vegetable friedrice and the soy based chowmein. Perfect size and in a food court environment.
Afjal Khan
Only food place I have been to where they serve previously made old roti's. Soggy and rubber like. Roti canai are supposed to be crispy on the outside.

4.5/5 actually<br/><br/>All their stir fry noodle dishes are great and authentic! Again, been there many times. Had a chicken curry once and went back to their stir fry noodles as it is I believe is what they are good at. Also the roti is nice too as it is the only two places in Auckland I can think of actually made their own roti. Uncle Man on K road been the other.<br/><br/>Another little gem in Manukau.<br/><br/>Try it!<br/>

Have been to this stall many times.<br/><br/>The chefs are a Malaysian Indian couple assisted by their children. Their Malaysian foods are authentic and taste good too. The husband chef is always friendly and he always looks enthusiastic and takes pride in his job as a chef cooking Malaysian foods. The wife and the daughters are not as friendly as the father though.<br/><br/>Tried their roti canai with chicken curry, mamak mee goreng, char mee, and char kuey teow, for quite a number of times.<br/><br/>The char mee and char kuey teow tasted flavourful with the charred essence. The mamak goreng was good too but sometimes tasted a little bit overly sweet.<br/><br/>The roti canai dough was very good, freshly made upon getting the order, and thus it was crispy on the surface with a softer texture inside. The chicken curry that came along with the roti canai tasted average, and the curry gravy was a little too diluted. The roti canai with chicken curry here would be a perfect dish if their chicken curry were more flavourful with thicker curry gravy.<br/><br/>Food & Beverage : 7/10<br/>Service : 6/10<br/>Price : 6/10<br/>Ambience : 6/10<br/>

my dad loves Malaysian food and 99%of the time we eat out, we eat Malaysian. this is by far the only place that I've been to with fresh made roti - looks just like how they make it in malaysia! if I feel like eating roti, this would be the only place I'd go to (I live out west so yes, worth the travels)

Don't be put off by someone's claim it "don't have enough flavor" One of the main things they ask you is "How spicy?"<br/><br/>Tell me somewhere else in New Zealand that you can find such fresh delicious roti?<br/>I absolutely love food and Roti is one of my all time favorites.<br/><br/>I highly recommend getting B2 (Roti Telur -1 piece egg & onion filled roti) with the chicken curry, I get hot but people that can't handle spicy should stick with mild or medium. I always order an extra plain roti to eat there and two extra roti takeaway for next days breakfast (with a hot black tea & condensed milk)! <br/><br/>Communication can be hard but it is worth it!

This place is part of the Food Junction food court so there are plenty of other outlets if you can't find anything you like from this outlet. That also means there is plenty of parking and plenty of seating and the ambience of a food court. I ordered the chicken laksa which was $13 which is more than the $10 showing on the menu in Zomato so someone needs to update that. The meal took about 10 minutes to arrive and looked tasty but was less than hot. I wonder if it had been sitting for a few minutes waiting to be served. The chicken was on the bone. I prefer boneless chicken for a dish like this as boned chicken is a bit fiddly to eat. When I got to the bottom of the bowl I noticed the bowl was a bit old & 'crusty' and they need to replace them in a more regular basis. At the end of the meal the fire alarms went off and the food court evacuated but luckily I had finished my meal. Next time I will order the seafood laksa.

Curries don't have enough flavor. Stir fry options are slightly better. Nothing to rave about. <br/><br/>We used to get their Roti canai and get other dishes from different places in Food court which was a great option. Off late they give you previously made roti's which isn't as good as freshly made one. And its $4 for that. Not worth it.<br/><br/>Enough trying them. Would not recommend if you like food with a bit of flavor which is what you expect from Malaysian cuisine.

The little Malaysian spot in the food junction is jist right to sit down for a quiet meal (not ao quiet when its peak lunch/dinner time). They Malaysian and south Indian dishes are very tasty. Espacially the beef rengang, fried rice and chop sui. Their roti canai so soft and delish!!

I’m a regular customer even though I live in West Auckland! I love love love their food. Esp N11! I always go for that. <br/>The only problem is the guy who works there is sometimes a bit off with his customer service when they’re busy. However usually they’re all amazing :) <br/><br/>Would recommend 100%

Was starving after a long travel back from new Plymouth. Food came slow. Ordered fish ball noodle soup and got a chicken noodle instead. But charged for fish ball. Didn't realize it until we ate half. Just realized that the other noodle we ordered was also chicken. Was expecting it to be fish ball but not. Not only that. Got a bug in one of the vegetable stalk in the soup. Got diarrhoea, so not really happy with that.

I do like the food but I'm really upset with what I get. So this is what happened today. I've ordered 2 egg roti (clearly priced $10 on the menu). And I've asked the lady before I ordered and she said the egg roti does comes with curry dipping sauce. However, she then charged me $3 extra for just the dipping curry sauce. I clearly told her that I did not want to have any meat in my curry and then the man intervene,<br/>"Just the dipping sauce is $3, if u want chicken curry with it that's another $10."<br/><br/>Oh well..

This foodcourt is always busy during dinner time but from time to time will dropby to have the Malaysian char mee (fried noodles). The portion can varies as sometime you get less or more compared to other day. Overall, l do enjoyed the fried noodles.

As in any food court, nothing much to talk about the decor. I ordered Nasi Lemak. Taste is tasty, flavoursome. The only thing I don't really like is the portion size. For $14, I can get a bigger portion somewhere else. There are a lot if carpark.

The owner of this place is delightful - always working, always cheerful and always remembers my name!<br/>I generally order my food to go and have only ever eaten in once. the Char Kuay Teow and Mamak Mee Goreng are my favourites. A friend of mine ordered the Malaysian Lamb curry which I tried a bit of and it was delicious. <br/>Only minus points is probably the portion size in the relation to the price, could be a bit more generous.<br/>Definitely worth checking out.
Asdf
the man who served me handled cash and then proceeded to knead and make my roti. Hygiene of this place put me off. Food is average, not bad but not amazing. Portion sizes are okay for the price you pay

Had a Laksa. Taste ok presentation acceptable. However not spicy hot as requested. It is not a genuine laksa as I have eaten in other eateries. Rice noodle is not used. Lack of base ingredients as well. Lots of broth. <br/>Over all not genuine Laksa rate 3.5 out of potential 10.

I brought a curry and ordered extra chicken - taking the total from $12.00 to $15.00. I received 3 tiny pieces of chicken in a $15.00 curry...pathetic. Absolute utter rip off. So if I had not of paid an extra 3 dollars would I have only received two pieces of chicken. I am an average sized bloke. I weight 87 kilograms. I ate this meal and went and immediately brought another meal given how tiny the portions were, the serving was. Patrons beware, this shop is way over priced and under served re the size of their dishes.

Price is quite reasonable $15ish for a dish. The price seems to keep increasing $1-$2 every year though. Always check your order as well, sometimes they can forget or charge you more when too busy. We love their food, especially their rotis but unfortunately the wait time is super long! Could get to 1 hour in busy times. My advice is to always call first before you pick up or you will go crazy waiting for so long while others around you nomming on all these yummies in the food court.

A really yummy find for such a casual location! This place is located in a food court that doesn't have the best ambience but this place has some delicious curry that takes me back to the streets of Singapore. <br/><br/>The roti was delicious. Freshly hot and was slightly crunchy (just how I like it). The curry lacked a bit of filling but the taste of the curry itself was jam packed with flavour! Me and my partner scraped the bowl clean. The only fault could only be found is that it was very oily and I couldn't get that top layer of oil to disappear. <br/><br/>4/5 due to location and excess oil. Would love it if it was in a better location - preferably in its own restaurant.

Been there twice but will never go again. For the first visit I ordered several dishes for the family so the service was ok but for the second visit, I ordered just for myself and the stupid chef keep asking 'anymore?'. Obviously I said no since I was just ordering for myself and my family were going for other stalls. He then told me I need to order minimum 2 dishes, when I asked why he couldn't answer me but insisted minimum 2. <br/>Later he told me he doesn't have time to serve for single dish.<br/><br/>Re food, based on previous visit, the food is definitely not authentic but just ok-lah. <br/>There are much better places for Malaysian food in Auckland (eg KL Kitchen Ti Rakau) with true Malaysian friendliness.
Brendon Manikkam
Right at the back of Food Junction run by a man from Ipoh, Malaysia.  Very friendly staff and the food comes out without too long a wait.  I recommend the Indian Malaysian dishes.  The chicken curry is the best we know and a number of dishes can be made with it e.g. nasi lemak or roti canai. We drive up from Hamilton to visit this place.

Will drive out of our way to eat the roti telur (egg prata) with curry chicken, and to finish off with caramelised banana prata for dessert. Have been known to stop there after a 5km colour run, a 2 hr car test drive and a baby shower that went on too long. Consistently tasty.
That_Girl
Had tried the Roti Canai with banana. It was super oily and there wasn't much banana in it. However, it doesn't taste bad and somewhat edible. Also tried the mee mamak and the taste was average. Service was fast because of the lack of customers

Dropped by this place on our way to Auckland, had high hopes of authentic roti made to order as I've heard many good things about it. Unfortunately, it fell well below expectations.<br/><br/>To start off with, I was told that they only had plain roti and none of the other varieties on their menu. And even the plain roti was not made to order but instead taken out from a box, because the chef was 'away'. <br/><br/>The plain roti was... okay, I guess. Definitely did not taste freshly made, and was not fluffy and crispy enough. The curry served with it was slightly congealed on the top and tasted average. <br/><br/>The part that bugged me the most was the smell of the food court. I'm not an ambience snob, I've eaten at most food courts in Auckland, even the one with the dodgy toilets in Northcote. None of them had had this smell - rank and sweaty, like how a gym locker room might smell like. I should have gotten takeaway instead. <br/><br/>All in all, it's not terrible food by food court standards if you happen to be around the area and want a quick bite, but I wouldn't come just for the roti again. Plenty of better roti in Auckland.
ShoRt
At the end of the food court stalls, you can see an Indian uncle flipping roti canai that actually looks super authentic. <br/><br/>I can see that there are many mixed reviews for this place, so without having much expectation, I ordered my usual char kuey teow (still in search for the best), and to my surprise... It is on the top of my list!!!! Cheap at $11 with chicken and prawns (combination) and asking for extra spicy and it was perfect. <br/><br/>The uncle and staff were friendly too. <br/>Service wasn't too bad and ambience, well you can't expect much from a food court. BUT I was surprised at how clean and spacious this food court is. <br/><br/>As mentioned, they make their own roti canai here! I was way too full so I'll be back to try that and write a review. <br/><br/>My experience here at 6pm on a Wednesday was quite a good one.<br/><br/>***<br/>ROTI CANAI REVIEW<br/>As I couldn't resist, I went back the next day and had roti canai with lamb curry, only because I've read some horrible reviews about it. I had it take away so I called beforehand to make my order. <br/>My roti was fresh and still hot even though I went there quite late, it could have been slightly less chewy but wasn't too bad! I would go home and leave it on a pan a bit longer to get it crispy outside :p the lamb curry was not cold but it was hot and lamb was the right tender texture. Lots of curry to go with the roti canai and decent number of lamb pieces. <br/><br/>My friend is vegetarian and she was able to get vegetarian curry without onion and garlic. She was delighted and really enjoyed her meal. <br/><br/>If you are around Manukau and craving Malaysian, would definitely suggest this.

Had to wait an age for food on a Friday night. So was it worthbthe wait? No not by a long shit. To be honest the roti canai wasnt even worth the walk to the back end of the food hall. Notsure ifhe owners are cutting costs butvthese guys were reputable when I worked in Manukau. Lamb curry a no ho zone. Watery sauce and chewy frozen dry lamb pieces. In two.minds to give them a 1 out of 5 but im on leave next week and I need to relax and let the blood pressure stay low!!
Vanessa
Haven't been here for awhile now and decided to visit this place today to have some roti. The roti was chewy, cold and not fresh at all. To my disgust, I chewed on a piece of plastic and only to find that it's a band aid that I've chewed on. It's extremely disgusting! I'll never come back to eat here ever.
Veganista
We have been here twice, and although it is not the loveliest place to buy food from, it is very tasty, and the owner is very passionate about what he does. We were re-assured that the vegetarian fried-rice and noodles along with the roti canai were all vegan. If you are looking for quick, cheap and yummy food, this is the place to go.

I always been to this place just because I love the roti canai even though the service has always been shit. The last 3 visits has been worst he said of you want to order the banana bread you need to order the main food also, then I said I will order 4 of those bread ($13 each) he was continuously nagging and said you need to call to place order for banana bread I said I don't know that you need to call for the banana bread it didn't said anywhere I should. He was screaming from the back kitchen throwing pen and banging plate. He said I have to wait for 15 minutes I said ok he said if I have main I will take the main food first I said ok. Then he continuously abusing me when I was trying to pay keep saying I don't want to make the bread I don't care this and that in his language (he didn't realise i actually understand Tamil) and then I said at the teller I may not come again not very happy with the way he behave he overhead it came straight to the teller and he told the teller to cancel the transaction he said he doesn't want to make the banana bread now for me. I said what a poor service is that how you treat your customer he keep yelling at me. I walked away in shocked. This happened today. Please do not go to this place have a look at the side of their kitchen so unhygienic the service are crap. He is lucky not many Malaysian food place close by to him. If you like Malaysian food go somewhere else. Once my friend also found him in the food junction male toilet he didn't wash his hand after his business when follow him out he went straight to the kitchen wipe his hand on the apron and he started making his bread again. Disgusting!

I've tried the combination char kuey teow here, and it is incredibly good. The man who runs the restaurant is also a really nice guy. I will definitely keep this place on my itinerary whenever I visit Manukau.
Sharmni Kumar
The guy who makes the Roti Canai is very rude.  He gave us burnt breat and expected not to change it but took full payment for it. DO NOT GO THERE, THEY ARE A RIP OFF!!!!
Steve Hall
his would be the best Malaysian I have tried outside of Kuala Lumpur, and Penang. In fact the Char Kuey Teow would be equally as good as the best I had in Penang. My favourite place in Auckland for sure. Great cook, and friendly guy. Been going there for a while now on and off when in the area. Had the fish curry which was nice, but cant go past the Char Kuey teow :)<br/><br/>I need to try some of the other things next time, they all look and smell good. <br/><br/>Down the end of the food court, dont order anything else until youve been down to have a look :)
Zaynah Al-katiri
I loved it ❤️ ive been looking for a place that sell good Malaysian food, and i really like this place i normally takeaway it , Also alot of food.

I've tried a few of the dishes they have to offer, but in my opinion their CM5 (black pepper chicken) is out of this world. Highly recommend it.

Suggu is a great cook with great personality!<br/>Overall, the pace gets bit hot, ambiance wise but Malaysian Food offsets that I suppose.
