Review Texas Chicken - Manukau

George Vinish
I liked the spicy chicken. They were good. Take away and dine in is available. Ample space, but the weekend better be there early, or it will be a bit tight to get a table for dine in.

Amazing Texas Chicken Chain located in Westfield Manukau! They have tasty chicken which seems to taste a lot fresher at this specific chain. Staff were friendly ish. Free refills is a plus and the potato and gravy here has much more Flavour than KFC. Overall a great experience on par if not better than KFC. Highly recommend!

Located in the food court of the Manukau Westfield Mall, it tends to get really busy but the service is quick. The spicy chicken burger or wrap is super hot and the chicken was super dry and chewy within the burger, however good in the wrap. Good place for a quick lunch break.
Baba Cat
Shop at food court in Westfield shopping centre. Share table with other food shops The chickens is tasty and juicy. Much better than the other big chain chicken restaurant

Fast and fresh, very much American style plate of chicken. Chicken is habanero spiced, nice burn, tender and crisp. Chicken pieces are smaller than kfc I prefer the flavor kfc hot and spicy . High light of the dish was the chips and the biscuit, buttery and wholesome, will go back just for that alone.

Texas is inside Westfield mall. Plenty of parking, nice place to have breakfast, lunch or dinner.

We went to this mall for the first time and were not able to decide what to order but looking at what most the people were ordering, Teaxs chicken was the obvious choice. It turned out to be a good choice. Loved the wrap over the burger. Chicken was nicely cooked.

First time to have it in South of akl instead of west. Guess we were there at dinner time, chicken and chips served at fresh, everything tasted so good. I love the spicy flavour, however would be great to offer super spicy, will be great.
Therick Ram
Good food, good price, too bad no spicy chicken when i was there. Very crowded.

Great fried chicken. Way better than KFC chicken which is so small and barely coated. Have the spicy options for the spice lovers. Service needs improvement, Eventhough they had three counters and visibly enough staff, for some reason, they were operating only with one counter. Food was delicious and hot. Thanks Guys 😊

I can understand during level 3, short of supply might be happen, but get told chicken sold out by waiting outside 45 mins is unbelievable! It is an online order with a scheduled pick up time, I can see less than 10 people during the 45 mins, so short supply can be expect, it you really respect to your customer, it is not hard to put a sign on the pick up table, instead of telling your customer who had been wait long time a 'sorry, I can refund'.
REALLY DISAPPOINTED -10/5 for the customer service.

Went here from city center but we were told the chicken wings all sold out. Cannot believe because it’s only midday. Very disappointed

I think about Texas Chicken a lot. Unfortunately, I can rarely satisfy my cravings because all of the outlets are so far away, but I did manage to score some yesterday. I got 8 chicken wings and they were really crispy and tasty, not at all oily and sickening like KFC. The potato gravy and chips were also pretty good. Big fan.

10 times better than KFC.

This chicken place is way better then some of its competitors. Love the biscuit. It’s a bit buttery but it’s nice. Tried the Mexican burger, wasn’t to spicy but had a little kick to it. Not an everyday place to eat but nice to eat once in a while

I like KFC and I feel Texas is on another level. Easily the best recommended foodcourt option. Massive pieces of chicken, very fulfilling and a satisfied meal. I do not head to Manukau Westfield often but if I do, Texas is always on my mind.
food: 4/5
service: 4/5
ambiance: 3/5

I’ve made the trip here from the Shore a number of times since they’ve opened and it is so worth the drive every single time.

I always go for the 2 piece combo with one original and one spicy piece. This is the most value meal I’ve ever come across, you get 2 large pieces of chicken, medium fries, potato and gravy, honey butter bread and a medium sized drink.

The chicken is beautiful every time - perfectly fried, succulent and flavourful, definitely some of the best chicken I’ve had. I am also a huge fan of their potato and gravy as well as the fries.

Service is always really fast and efficient. Really hoping that they’ll open up a store in central at least in the future.

This must be the best fried chicken in Auckland. Just wondering why they don't open branch in Auckland central. Hot and spicy fried chicken crispy and delicious! i love it soooo much

Spent around 23.50 here, got the 6 pack chicken with $3.50 a add on. The customer service and preparation of food was quick. Better than KFC in my opinion as the chicken wasn’t soggy and it was crunchy on the outside and well cooked/hot, and not cold unlike one of its competitors. Would come back here.
Food Loverrr
The chicken from here is okay I like that it is nice and crunchy and juicy. For me though it can lack the flavors you'd enjoy from a piece of fried chicken. A meal from here is pretty average but I think it's worth a try if you've never had it
Grant
Absolutely abysmal. They told me there were no burgers left so I got a wrap instead, the person in the line behind me then proceeded to order a burger and got one! The wrap had so much mayo in it I couldn't taste anything else. I'm sad to say this was the worst meal I've eaten this year.

The food is always good. This particular time i went there were about 6 workers. One guy was on his phone at the counter, the others were standing around. I ordered 2 x 3pc tenders combos. Both combos had no potato and gravy, no honey bun and the wrong sauce. With that many workers there I thought they would get the order right but nope. I then ordered 2 more combos for my friends and one came with no sauce. Next time I will be checking my orders.

I always crave for their chicken! Its so tasty and juicy. The lady who served me is very friendly but other staffs were nice too. There’s a lot of selection around the mall’s food hall but I would always prefer texas chicken!

Update on 30 Aug 2018:

We bought 10 pieces of Texas spicy fried chickens today for dinner. They were as good as usual, the skin was crunchy and crispy, the meat inside was juicy and tender. Fabulous!

My previous comments:

My family, friends, and I prefer Texas fried chickens to fried chickens under other franchise brands as we find that Texas chickens are not as oily and they taste finger licking good. Even after leaving the chickens for several hours, they still taste as flavourful and crunchy.

We love their honey butter buns and tex wraps too! Despite the long queues especially on late-night days, the foods are delivered within a very reasonable time frame, averagely less than 15 minutes.

Food & Beverage : 9/10
Service : 7/10
Price : 7/10
Ambience : Not applicable

Yum! Chicken is not bad, still prefer KFC because of flavor, these chickens have a crunch and are still moist and juicy, the biscuit or that bread is highly recommended my favourite thing out of the meal

One of the easiest review I have placed.

YUM! YUM! YUM!
Would I go again: YES
Value for money: YES

My mouths watering just thinking about it lol.
Way better then KFC - chicken coating is so crunchy, freely made and they don’t get the order constantly wrong like they do at KFC
Gastrophilist
Definitely better chicken than KFC, slightly costlier but big juicy pieces. Spicy option is better and has good flavor. Coleslaw is also better.

Burgers are not that good so better stick to chicken which alongside fries makes a good (unhealthy) meal.

I have never waited too long to get my order so I would say quick and prompt service. Cleanliness is improving.

Had lunch here today , 3 piece pack , came out nice & hot!! Everything was good & tasty but my buns were a lil bit soggy other then that 8/10

One of the best if not the best chicken in Auckland or maybe in the whole NZ!
I have to agree their chicken feels less grease than any other chicken I've tasted in NZ or in other countries. Their chickens are big though sometimes it lacks taste maybe because the flavor didnt reach the whole chicken part but hey i have no complains ad every time I eat here it definitely fill me up.
My favorite is their 3 piece chicken meal deal with the mashed potato , chips, muffin, and drinks
Definitely bang for the buck!!
Hopefully I can try also their other dish
Just try it whenever you have the chance!

Tried Texas the first time, shocked and satisfied:) As a super fan of KFC fried chicken, Texas piece is perfect so far. Juicy and crispy, original flavour but turn on ur tongue! Even the honey bun is amazing as well, sweet and crispy.... fast food can also makeu happy. However, it only locates in AKL....what’s more, pls do not try every new products if u are not afraid of being disappointed and just want a go.

Service was good during a busy lunch hour.
Food came fresh and crispy. Chips were crisp and nice And chicken had nice and crisp coating and not too dry. Not as tasty as kfc.
Scone bun is always nice and soft.
Good for a change.
Drink machine had very warm fizzy.
Punar Jot Gill
Good food but poor service. Takes too long to make an order. Recently ordered a wrap there, 20 minutes had to wait for it and half of the ingredients were missed out.
Daniel
It's alright xD
I just feel like Texas chicken lacks something..
Idk I perfer KFC more and always crave KFC but I never crave Texas chicken.
Wow it's quite good. Doesn't make you feel sick or greasy like other fast food chains. Fresh, top-quality chicken. Gravy is really nice too. It just feels healthier and more sophisticated in general.

It's a shame that you have to drive to Manukau to eat here. It's pretty much just like KFC, a lot of people say they like it more, but i still love my KFC.

The Hot and Spicy chicken style chicken was nice. I'm not a huge fan of the honey buns.

Only downside is that you can actually get better deals with KFC by using their coupons online, haven't seen any coupons for Texas Chicken though.
Krystal Tran
Their chicken are really nice and crunchy. I love their chicken tender. The honey mustard sauce is really nice and goes really well with the chicken. Best sauce there. Their gravy and coslaw tastes really bad. KFC still has the best gravy and coslaw but their chicken is the best. Service is really good. Love how you can refill your drinks.
Mojo Jade
if you are a fried chicken mukbang fan then this is what dreams of made of and where you should buy your chicken, eat it, and film it. the spicy version is much better for the contrasting pepper kick. and please do yourself a favour and get the chicken bone in, none of this tenders/burger business. then you will not be dissapointed.
Lē Slade
Really good service. Chicken always moist and not too long for delivery. Better than any Auckland KFC I've been too. And they look alot cleaner than any akl KFC @sanesupply
Oment Li
Pretty good better than KFC, Hot and Spicy. Gravy more rich but no gravy only option. Lines usually long and no drive through. Service good-great. Have not tried burgers/wraps yet.
Khaleesi
Back when I was eating meat which was a few months ago I would come here for some tasty, juicy n chunky chicken. Beats KFC by far, only downer is that there are only two stores in Auckland. There was always a queue everytime I went. Very busy place at the food court.
Naire Enoka
Way better than kfc. Chickens are moist and Large . Not like kfc being small and dry. One of my favourite fast food places . A+++ would definitely recommend

Super delicious ! This is my first time trying TEXAS CHICKEN and I'm in love !!!!!!! They taste so much better than KFC especially their spicy chicken MUST TRY! So this is what I ordered today
3 pcs spicy chicken combo and it comes with a honey butter bun, 1 medium fries, 1 drink , 1 potato gravy. For $12.50
I was fortunate enough to get these fresh, if you have to wait it's worth the wait. Just be careful when you bite down not to burn yourself!

Service: 3/5
Food Quality: 4/5
Food Quality: 4/5
Environment: 3/5
Price: $15-$20pp

Well the only reason I go KFC is Texas Chicken hasn't opened one in north shore yet. I don't mind to drive a long way to Manukau or Henderson but it would be excellent to have one close to my home.

Yes, you read it right. This is a review of a fastfood restaurant 😄. Being a hot&spicy fried chicken lover, I would definitely recommend Texas Chicken. It's one of the place in Auckland to get the "unhealthy"Hot&spicy chicken and thus a good alternative to KFC or other friend chicken offered by kebab stores. Price-wise its similar to KFC, but this appears to be more worth your money. Aside from the crispy chicken, the mash potatoes are worth the mention - It's slightly peppered-spicy. The honey coated bun was also good. Service-wise was just so-so, but who cares... it's a fastfood. Gotta get it fast 🤣
Viv
Chicken was so much bigger than KFC. I ordered what I'd usually order at KFC and it was such a big portion in comparison I couldn't eat it all. 👍
Chicken was moist and juicy, honey butter bun was sooo good would go back but I live in Wellington ☹️ come to Wellington
Misty
Can't beat KFC but love the crunchy coating of Texas chicken. Honey butter bun was weird at first but now the more I eat it the more I like it! You can choose between Original or Spicy, but to me they taste the same- not spicy at all!
LilMSunshine
This is probably my 5th time here. I just loved their crispy, hot and spicy chicken compared to others. It's fresh and juicy and taste like no other. The honey butter buns are so delish....this is perhaps the only reason why I come to Westfield Manukau. Absolutely yummy.
Ivy Rasmussen
It's juicy, it's tender and so crunchy. I had the the spicy chicken it was beautiful and what the meal came with made it complete, I just love that little bread roll they have with it. I agree with Marggie sometimes you have to try fried chicken that is not from KFC, even though the Colonel was here first I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Benz Chan
Great taste is only skin deep. Meat inside is bland. Chicken sizes are bigger than their direct competitors. Honey butter buns are yummy!

Staff are plain straightforward, not so friendly as they need to work fast (it's quite busy here most times).

Between KFC and Texas, I would still choose KFC for its superior flavor.

My wife had a very bad experience in the Texas Chicken Manukau branch today!!! Last Friday, we had collected 4 stamps on our loyalty card. At the time we didn't ask the clerk to redeem the free chicken but the clerk mistakenly stamped it. I asked her to replace a new card for me but she said they didn't have a new one. As a result she crossed the wrong stamp and marked on the card. She said we can redeem the free one whenever we want. Today, my wife consumed there again and tried to redeem it. However, another clerk who served my wife rudely said it is not a signature from any of them and refused to redeem it. My wife tried to explain what had happened nicely but she refused to double check and asked my wife to show her the receipt or the bank account/statement. How many people will always keep an old Texas Chicken receipt in their wallet? It is not our fault but my wife were treated as a lier rather than a customer!!! OK, you need the receipt? The bank statement? I can provide them now because now I am in my office!!! To be honest, we like Texas Chicken and we WERE loyal customers. Therefore we can get enough stamps. Actually we missed many stamps because we always forgot to take the card. However, I don't think it is a fair way to treak a loyal customer like this!!!

Went here yesterday for lunch and it was such a nice change from KFC. Better than KFC actually. The chicken was super crunchy and super tender and juicy. I had the $7.50 meal and that was WAAAAY worth it. It's comparable to KFC's ultimate burger meal where you get a burger, piece of chicken (I got a THIGH with Texas, I've always received either a wing or drum with KFC) chips and a drink. At nearly half the price you cannot go wrong. Not only the KFCs chicken is super oily and not as crunchy as it once was. It was the perfect meal, not heavy at all and price was so good.

Not bad for a fried chicken joint. Personally I did not like it when I had it the first time about a year ago.

However when I went back today, just because I wanted fried chicken type food in Manukau mall today, I wasn't as disapointed. The $7.50 Mexican meal was not only cheap but surprisingly tasty. I might be coming back.

Had this a couple of months ago, well the chicken was okay. The most I enjoyed was the honey scone(biscuit as they call it) and that was it. Potato gravey wasn't all that and it tastes so weird like it's off(yuk) chicken was crispy though but doesn't really have any flavour and is tasteless Service was okay as well.
Alex
Not as good as I thought people made it out to be I found the chicken fatty and the salad had no flavour what so ever although sevice was fast I did not think it was worth the money spent
Marggie Pascua
The chicken is so good, enough spice and super crunchy. Definitely worth the hype. Sometimes you just got to try fried chicken that is not from KFC and this is totally the place to go to.
Munterboy
Fried chicken is what you can expect but in my opinion kfc is better Texas just doesn't have the flavour. Also not a fan of the sides they offer but that's just me
Foodie
Found fly eggs embedded in my chicken, emailed them a photo and they asked for the piece of chicken back so they could send it off for investigation. The manager said she would get back to me but never did. However got a refund when I gave the chicken back. Never been back since.
Chelsea
This was my first time at Texas Chicken. The food was flavorless and service was poor. I understand they were busy, but a smile and polite greeting goes a long way.

The first taste of Texas chicken was at this very mall. After working at AUT south campus orientation last year, I decided to try it out and it is something I will never regret. Great crispy chicken and fries
Phil Jones
i was quite keen to try this place being a big fan of fried chicken in general. I have to say yes it was crunchy but it was missing 1 key factor - Taste !

If you've had KFC's hot and spicy chicken you know how tastless it is .. yes cruncy , a slight hint of heat for those that don't typically like hot food , those that do like hot food will vouch its anything but spicy and very much lacking any hint of KFC distinctive flavour. Well Texas chicken is exactly the same- it has no distinctive "own flavour". Infact if you put a piece of their hot and spicy next to the KFC version youd be hard pressed to tell the difference due to lack of flavour.
To be fair Texas chicken did have slightly more heat than I typically know from KFC . Texas original chicken was the same.. same bland coating - no distinct personality in flavour -- easily mistaken for a million other failed KFC emulators. Id be very hard pressed to identify it on its only flavour if I had to.

Infact the hot and spicy vs original texas chicken was extremely hard to tell the difference between the 2, period!

The potatoe and gravy was your typical instant mash potatoe like KFC's however the gravy tasted like it was simply a combination of flour and Maggi chicken stock - nothing else ! 1 mouthful was enough,, into the bin!

....

It did make me think all the way home about how I used to love tipping my finger into mums maggi chicken stock powered as a young kid !

On a positive note the chicken was far more tender and moist compared to KFC and as much as I love eating the skin on its own from KFC, I was left simply

disappointed at how boringly tasteless it was and wont in anyway be rushing back if other options for a quick bite are close by as well..

Gotta say though , burgers looked bloody good so MAYBE ill give one a go some time..
Esleigh Saxe
Service was fast. The chicken was delicious and fresh. The buns were so good too. Everything was way better than kfc and it wasn't greasy either ! Loved it.
Michelle Ma Belle
Other than the one time that they messed up my takeaway order (gave 3 honey butter buns when I ordered and paid for 6 😟), I have nothing negative to say about this place.

The food is always on point - the fried chicken has amazingly crispy skin, tender on the inside, and very well seasoned, far prefer it to KFC.

The honey butter buns are divine - the texture are similar to scones, moist and buttery, with a crunchy honey glaze. I keep coming back for this, and can eat four of them at once :p The fried oreos are yummy too - taste like cookie flavoured donuts.

The service is friendly and very accommodating. The lady was understanding of the fact that i don't like fries and soft drink, and were happy for me to swap them for something else. Very grateful of her, and will definitely keep visiting in the future :)

Thank whoever that brought Texas Chicken to New Zealand!! The chicken were so crunchy, tender and spicy (if you order spicy ones) I mean not that spicy but it's better than other brand that claim as spicy chicken but actually can't taste any spices! Chicken pieces are bigger than other brand as well and you got refill fizzy if you dine-in. Honey bun was nice! The texture is like scone/biscuit. It would be good if they have a choice for like cheesy or honey bun.
Anyway I really hope they will open more branches around NZ!
Manic Diner
Lunched here on Saturday with friends. I had skipped dinner the night before and breakfast so needless to say, by the time I arrived at the mall I was a hungry, hungry hippo! It was our first time there so we ordered a variety as we weren't sure when we would get the opportunity again. We tried their 10 piece tenders combo with fries and mashed potato, their Tex Supreme and Club burgers and shortcake with chocolate sauce for dessert.

Their tenders were moist and lightly seasoned, their mashed potato was smooth and creamy and fries were perfect. The burgers were delicious too and I couldn't help but draw comparisons with KFC. While KFC's seasoning is more distinctive and flavourful, I preferred the freshness of ingredients and non-oily taste of Texas Chicken hands down. The only thing that I didn't like from Texas Chicken was their shortcake dessert. The "shortcake" was a definite obstacle..we literally had to try and cut through it with our plastic takeaway spoons. The texture was all wrong for that kind of dessert. I suspect they were frozen versions of their honey butter buns. It was a crunchy hard american "biscuit" with soft serve and a chocolate fudge sauce topping. Not one component of the dessert was nice in any way, the soft serve wasnt a creamy vanilla..there may have been ice in the mixture and the chocolate sauce was the faux chocolate tasting kind. It was a shame because the lunch was great til that point.

I'll try it again the next time I'm in the area but I'll definitely skip the dessert.

Cool place in this noisy food court. Meal was nice and filling. Spicy options are nice. Lots of foot fall into this place, still service was quick and friendly.
Stephy_NakiGirl
I'm not usually a fan of takeaway chains, but was interested to try this relatively new one especially as friends had raved about their honey butter buns.
There are around 2-3 of these currently in Auckland & I'm sure there'll be more. It's sort of a cross between KFC & Carl's Jnr in their approach I guess.
I tried the chicken tenders combo & added a honey butter bun - not bad value at $6.50.
The tenders were nice - juicy inside, and a crispy coating which was like cornflakes in texture. They would have benefited from a dipping sauce which I know they do so not sure why the combo doesn't have one. Taste wise I think the KFC coating is tastier, but these are much juicier.
The chips were well cooked & had a corn taste to them like they were cooked in corn oil. No seasoning though - a tasty salt like KFC's would have been good.
Drinks you fill yourself - they have the Coke range.
The honey butter bun I really didn't like although as I said I know many people do. It was just a weird combination having sticky honey on a bun. I do like honey, but this didn't work for me.
Some good elements here, but I think good KFC (which can be hard to find) is better.
Josh Law
The original Texas chicken franchise in New Zealand. This place is a beauty. For a while it was out performing every other food place in the Mall. The big difference between this and KFC is the cut. They cut the chicken into larger pieces. The coating is also a little before crunchy on the outside. A delicious change to KFC.
Richard Sharpe
Had a combo. One piece of spicy 2 of regular. Couldn't tell the difference both flavorless. The potato and gravy is about half the size of KFC. If there was an upside the chicken was skinned and the meat quite soft. Didn't taste any good. Wouldn't go back.
Christina Meki
I love the spicy chicken with the honey bun, can't decided if there better than kfc. But the service can range. First time I went I got my order straight away where second time I went I wait almost 20minutes and other customers that just came got served before me so marking points down for that.
Jasmine Seutahi
I have to say kfc is better, generous portions of chicken but not as much flavour as kfc. Chips are average. Coleslaw is way better at kfc. I eat Texas chicken for my fried chicken fix at the Manukau branch when shopping. Queue lines could be a lil more organized. But over all very good fried chicken never dry and always crisped.
Neel Silva
Very very disappointed about manukau branch because my family came to vist from srilanka to here I took them on 22nd December 2015 manukau Westfield Texas chicken .and my dad ordered a chicken meal for my niece and she's ten years old and the chicken was uncooked and blood was leaking out and I returned to the lady who's in the cashier she asked what happened to the chicken when she saw the blood coming out she remained silent . I never ever recommend anyone to go there if anyone finds something like this you should report to Auckland city conuncil
Can Dee
I liked the new joint Texas Chicken in comparison to KFC. The chicken is bigger and spicier and you get a honey scone with gravy and chips. KFC chips have poured on salt on their chips, chicken is downsized and their restaurants are just beyond words and staff who abuse their customers with words unprofessional. Well Done Texas Chicken, I would prefer you over KFC. Just upgrade the service on the waiting time. And if you don't want salt on your food tell them.
Tania Goldsbury
Didn't think much of it at all, chip were plain, the pototo/gravy was too spicy for my daughter an the chicken was tender but had no taste an didn't think much of there buns either. We all voted kfc wins
Sarah Maughan
This is the 4th time I've had Texas chicken and I won't be going back anytime soon... The chick was amazing...the chips were overcooked and when I got home they had left out half my meal.... To think I have no money for this but had to treat my kids, spent $30 and it was half not there and overcooked... Not cool....and what do you know... Can't friggn contact them... How awesome!!!

We had the chicken for take away tonight. Surprisingly the chicken were still very hot and crispy after we reached home. Both of the original and spicy were very crispy, a lot better than KFC. The chicken were ok, but it's not worth it if u had to travel from the other side of auckland for them.
Winnie Luo
There is no photo because I was too hungry.

I'm so torn about this place. The fries and spicy chicken were amazing but the original pieces I got were beyond human levels of saltiness. The butter honey buns were a nice treat too. The mash and gravy was average.

It was so good when I ate it but they put so much salt in their food that my body couldn't handle it and I knocked out for hours following my meal and it wasn't even 8pm.

Good value and some potent salty chicken.

First store of this American franchise to open here@ Manukau shopping center.just under a year ago.when it was chaotic with queues ten to fifteen deep.all day .... likened to a pop concert
with everyone going mad for their star product"fried chicken"..but it was the front of house staff that were the big let down!!running around like headless chook,s with staff mucking up orders left ,right&center slowing service to a Holt!!.which is a shame as they do a descent fried chicken here..third time lucky here today,,much better service today and as for the chicken?..yes!!..a good consistent and perfectly cooked product!!again.... and no compassion to the other Jekyll and Hyde Fried chicken chain...

Im not a big fan of fast food, but will indulge once in a blue moon especialy when tired and hungry. When it comes to chicken KFC is the closest place to be. Until Ive done shopping in westfield manukau and was hampered by this Texas chicken wif ma mates. I found the chkcken in texas less greasy and bigger serving than kfc, the service is better than kfc. And i came to conclusion that texas chicken is healthier or lesser evil than KFC coz ma polynesian mates didnt like it at all coz its not as greasy as kfc!!!
Justine Orme
I wouldn't buy this again.
The chicken was the only thing worth eating - after you get through the tasteless batter.
Good points - the batter was crispy, the chicken was moist and tender and the staff were friendly.
And there it ends.
The 'coke' was more soda with very little flavour - it went down the drain.
The fries were tasteless with insufficient seasoning - the birds ate them
The potato and gravy was seasoned SO much it was inedible - far too much sodium added into the formula
The bun or whatever it was, was far too crumbly, unable to eat as a bun, again, it was tasteless and went out to the birds - I wonder if they will eat them?

Sorry Texas Chicken - I'll go back to my normal fast food place.
Alex Tjahjana
When I was overseas, I always prefers Texas Chicken compared to KFC; unfortunately, the New Zealand version of the Texas Chicken doesn't excite me at all. We tried both the spicy & standard fried chicken with fries and sides and I personally doesn't live up to the hype. I found that their chicken are very similar to KFC. If you live nearby, then it's worth to try; but if you have to drive for 30-45 mins to get there, it's better to go to the nearby KFC; you won't miss a thing.
Ryan Lal
I must admit, I'm a big KFC fan and I love fried chicken so I was very excited about trying out Texas Chicken for the first time. We'll just ignore the bit where I drove 45 minutes across town just to try it.

The service took very long but that was expected as the place was really busy. I just guess a lot of people wanted to try out the new thing going on. I ordered the spicy instead of the original.

I must say overall I was quiet underwhelmed with my food. It was just average and there wasn't really anything special about it. The chicken had a little bit of spice but not comparable to KFCs hot and spicy in terms of taste which is much better. The biscuit thing that came with even though it was tasty by the time I finished it, it was just falling apart everywhere.

For the price you pay and the time you have to wait, I don't really think it was worth the trip. I wanted to believe the hype but I just can't.

The crispy fried chicken here is worth the hype. Definitely. Despite having to drive 15 minutes before I could eat it, it survived the journey and was crunchy, juicy and as succulent as ever.

Each piece was massive as well and the batter was some serious stuff. It wasn't too thick, didn't have that weird layer of uncooked batter that kfc's hot and spicy does and it was a good level of hot. It's more of a peppery hot I'd say.

If you're thinking about whether or not you want to try it, trust me. Go try it.

A brand name that resonates through Auckland's fried chicken lovers. I was determined to come and try their fried chicken.

As expected, Manukau Mall was packed on a Friday night and so was Texas. to their credit however, I only waited for 5 minutes before I got my food.

I found the chicken to be exceptionally crunchy and crisp. The taste was great but I will admit that the colonel's secret recipe is tastier. However, when you order KFC the chicken is usually extremely oily and soggy, and the Texas Chicken felt and tasted less oily and more freshly fried.

Side dish of mash potatoes and honey bun were interesting but nothing to rave about.

Showstopper: Crispy fried chicken. Would come back and the chicken parts were huge. Quick service to boot.

Overall Grade: B+

Dined in and bought a takeaway for my folks since this is quite far from our place. Got home only to find out that my order is incomplete. So disappointing!

Nothing very special with the fried chicken. However their tender chicken strip is nice. I also liked their honey buns and mashed potato.

Visited Texas Chicken a few months back on a weekday lunch, it was busy and we queued up for bout 15 mins. Once it was our turn the service was quick. Portion is big compared to KFC and we had the spicy option. It was definitely crispy and less oily, but it wasn't spicy like KFC wicked wings. Overall it is an healthy alternative to KFC, but still my preference is still KFC wicked wings. A friend mentioned a few days ago that the portions have got smaller.

Texas Chicken was the new craze a few months back! I forgot to put my review up when I tried it, but we drove across the city for Texas Chicken because everyone had hyped it up! I am a huge KFC lover, so I definitely wanted to see if it was better. We ended up getting the Tex Sampler because it gave us a little bit of everything to try. We got hot and spicy to compare! The chicken was definitely crispy and less oily than KFC, but the spice was definitely different. It tasted more like jalapeno spice than the normal KFC spice. I do prefer the KFC spice though as I feel like it has more flavour than Texas Chicken.

The honey bun was so average. Everyone had hyped it up saying it was so good, but it really just tasted like a sweet scone. I found it a bit dry and would much rather prefer a bread roll from KFC... The fries at KFC are better as well.

Service wasn't great, because the staff were all new. But once they're trained up, I can imagine it will be a lot better! Not too sure that I'd come back, but if I'm ever around the area I'll probably try it again! Still a KFC fan hahaha.

Juicy, crunchy and moist. All the things fried chicken should be. I wouldn't say Texas is better than KFC though just because they both have pros and cons. I do feel like they serve bigger pieces at Texas and they're fresher.

Their potato and gravy is definitely better than KFC though. Couldn't get enough of it. The perfect accompaniment to the chicken. Their honey bun is average. Tasted like sweet scones in our opinion.
The fries are meh. KFC still has the upper hand on that with their seasoning.

But overall, Texas is a nice substitute if you're looking for something different than good old KFC :)

I had to try Texas Chicken after hearing from friends how good their fried chicken was. I agree the chicken was crispy outside, moist inside and not as oily as the more popular fried chicken brand. However, that is how far it goes...the flavour does not really go through the meat and left it tasting bland. A good dipping sauce would have made a big difference. The coleslaw was not specular but the honey bun was good. Overall, a good meal when you are hungry.
Denise
The fried chicken was really good, crispy on the outside but the meat was still juicy, and I think is better than KFC as it's not as oily and doesn't leave you feeling as bloated after from all the extra oil. The tenders weren't quite as good as they had less flavour but the hot and spicy chicken was amazing. The honey butter buns are something new but taste good, same with the potato mash. Serving sizes weren't big but are still quite good relative to the price which was reasonable. Service was also good, staff were friendly and food came out in just a few minutes.

I tried TC twice and I think it's one of the best ones in the mall ...quick service and affordable meal ...highly recommended to try if u want a quick meal

The service was quick and the chicken was super crispy on the outside and really juicy in the centre.
Their mashed potato is way better than KFC but the seasoning on the chicken isn't as tasty. The serving size was good for the price but I think their FB advertising overhyped the product- it wasn't as good as they made it look...

mmmmmmm I had to try this just because kfc was stopping their hot n spicy shortly, I was pleasantly surprised, loved the spicy chicken but yes, the spicy chicken did take a little longer but am glad to know where it is, just a shame its only in manukau and not west auckland :( but aside from that i was pleasantly surprised and will be going back for more!

As a sidenote the definetly need more outlets and please bring some to henderson :)

Have been told by numerous people how great this place is, finally had the chance to try it out yesterday. The chicken was fresh and crispy and I love that they have the hot and spicy choice. The honey bun complemented the chicken and gravy perfectly. Gravy was well seasoned too!

Texas Chicken is good value for money especially when it comes to the size and portion of its chicken (they give you mostly breasts) and its freshness. It's so juicy, tender and piping hot. However I only go here for their hot and spicy chicken and their mash which I think surpasses the rest. The mash, for me, taste closer to actual potatoes compared to KFC. I would say though that in terms of original recipes, the KFC original chicken is better than Texas Chicken's because of its flavour.

Go to Texas Chicken if you like good, hot and spicy chicken and potato mash. The rest (original chicken, coleslaw, fries are the ones I've tried) are below or on par with others.

If you want half-frozen chicken, cold soggy chips and TERRIBLE slow service when you're the ONLY customer then Manukau Texas Chicken is the place to go! Multiple times i have been disappointed with everything at TC. Working in the mall means you and your colleges have tasted every fast-food in there and i have to say - TC was yum and tasty for the Day 1 it opened, but two months down the track they have gotten horribly pathetic. Me and my workplace refuse to go there now - not worth the money or the hype anymore. Step up your game TC Manukau or you'll lose all your customers. BK and MCdonalds aren't feeling the pain of you in their tills anymore - you're giving them more customers. Rant over.

Really moist, juicy and crispy chicken. Decent size and portion. The potato gravy were a bit salty. The sweet bun taste like a scone which is great if you like scone. I will definitely go back again!

Best fried chicken i have ever had! When its busy hours they take quite long to make your order but its totally worth the wait. The fried chicken has a crispy batter and they fry it to perfection, the meat inside is very juicy and tender. The honey and butter bun is similar to a scone, it has a little bit of crunch on the outside but the inside is very fluffy. It's so soft that if you pick if up with your hands, it falls apart. The chips are pretty average, but if you dip it in the gravy it tastes like heaven. Gravy is very smooth and very rich. defiantly recommend this!!!

I have had TC on a number of occasions and i think it's really great. The staff are a bit under trained but since they just started it's forgivable. The chicken though is amazing. It's crispy and juicy. But a wait is needed if anyone wants anything thats spicy coated. If they train their staff more and lessen the wait time for anything else besides normal chicken, i would give this establishment a 5.

With KFC being one of my past times in recent years i thought I was in a good space to evaluate TC. Recommended by workmates of my partner.
Not too keen to review food chains unless its a no go zone.
Best thing is TC chicken pieces is not a copy of Kfc. Its got a clear different taste. Crunchy batter great chicken taste and tenderness. 4/5
Kfc can be too dry in breast meat or too oily in the thigh meat.
Orginal Burger was a simple burger clean taste not over complicated by sauces or strong flavours. Bread bun was a little lame. Too soft and spongy and a let down as burger lost shape and it looks like a sandwich rather than a burger might have been a quality control issue but probably would waste my money with their burgers. Buns at carl jr stores are much better as the sesame seeds actually do have essence which is rare with these joints. 2.5/5
Chips were just average but a good serving size. 3/5. Will go back and try some health wraps or salads.

Very yummy#spicy#crunchy#moist# check the receipt as they offer for repeat purchase. #YAMO#
Will go back, service needs bit more attention 😀
Texas Chicken has way more flavor than kfc..... 👍

I came to visit the first time because of all the excitement from a new fried chicken place. We ordered the 8 piece friends and family pack with fries and mashed potato. It was a bit of a wait as it was quite busy but the chicken was fresh and tasty! Very disappointing that we asked for half spicy, half original but got all original. The second time we came, I just really wanted to try the spicy chicken. We stood at the counter and no one served us. The manager then came up and asked if we had been served, we said no and stepped up to the counter. He then just walked away and didn't ask anyone to come serve us. So we just continued waiting until a crew member came to help. Overall, the chicken is very succulent and tasty, however I find the original chicken to be way too salty and the spicy is nothing compared to KFC's wicked wings. The fries were also very plain and tasteless, but the mashed potato and gravy was great! Texas Chicken is a good place to go for a tasty junk binge, but service is slow and you'd be better off just going to KFC.

First time we went on a Friday they stopped taking orders at 730pm asked me to wait but can't say how long. Went again today and short wait but worth it. Ordered a mixed original and spicy, very good crisp, not too spicy and moist inside. It is not too oily. The potato gravy is creamy and smooth. Honey bun is good, soft. Better chicken than KFC.

I've had this. . . Literally nearly every week since they've opened haha.

Lovely moist chicken with crunchy coating. I've had both original and spicy versions and both are equally crunchy and moist.
THE HONEY BUTTER BUNS ARE TO DIE FOR! 😍

I'll definitely be returning for more chicken 😁 I've been waiting for Zomato to add Texas Chicken so I could write a review and upload photos.

There's always a line, so it's a very popular place to dine at, I cannot wait till they open more stores as the mall can be very busy and not a very convenient place to come to.
The staff are pleasant to deal with even in the busier times such as lunch and dinner hours. In all honesty I think in comparison to KFC, the chicken pieces are slightly larger here at Texas Chicken, definitely more crunchier as KFC is always a hit or miss whether you get crunchy chicken or not. The Zinger at KFC is normally always crunchy not so much the original which is always oily 😒
But Texas Chicken has not let me down! Moist meat and crunchy outer!

I much prefer the coleslaw at KFC. But Texas Chicken wins for their chicken over KFC, it's just not as creasy and oily as KFC can be. The honey butter buns are a very good match with the potato and gravy and chicken, compliments very well!

Take it from a girl who loves her fried chicken! Give Texas Chicken a try 😁
I've been choosing Texas Chicken over KFC

The wait was rather long at around 10.30am on a weekday. The staff does not seem to be experience enough to deal with a lot of orders. The chicken was hot and crispy which was good. I ordered the spicy one but didn't find it spicy at all. Good for people who only likes mild spicy. I would say i like it better than kfc but probably wont try it again until the hype dies down and they can better manage the crowd.

It is quite hard to compare Texas Chicken to KFC. After the family had sampled this new place, we've concluded that KFC will still reign for its original chicken, as they simply had more flavour and spices. We do prefer KFC's mash potato and gravy, too. However, KFC loses when it comes to the spicy chicken, as I personally think that Texas Chicken is crunchier and has a more satisfying kick to it. Besides the crunch, both the original and spicy at Texas Chicken are less greasy, juicier and just seems like a healthier alternative. Bottom line is, if Texas Chicken and KFC were side by side then I will definitely choose Texas Chicken. But is it worth a 20min trip when KFC is only 5mins away? No. With that said, Texas Chicken seems promising, and it's definitely a place worth trying.

So we heard about this new fried chicken place and thought of giving it a try.

The whole conversation was about KFC vs Texas Chicken. Here's our overall rating (out of the five of us):

Spicy Chicken: KFC 3.5 vs Texas 4.5
Original: KFC 4.5 vs Texas 3.5
Mashed potatoes: KFC 4.5 vs Texas 3
Fries: KFC 3 vs Texas 3

Overall: KFC 4 vs Texas 3.8
We'll go for Texas for their spicy chicken but stick to KFC for the original.
I don't wanna use this here but really it's finger licking good... The chicken is well cooked and it's spicy as I need. The outlet has opened recently and already I've been there a couple of times. The taste is good, honey butter bun is awesome. All they need to improve is Customer service and their order processing time. The staff working there seems to be confused all the time. Still, if the food is good other things can be ignored. The best part is there chicken is crispy not soggy. Waiting for the next time I go there.... Try once of you love fried chicken.

Waited in line for 10mins to get my order. Then had to wait for another 5mins for my desserts. Good was very good. Customer service could be a bit better though. Also to make it clear if there is free refills or not.

Prior to eating here I was told that the food was much better than kfc's and to my surprise it far exceeded my expectations. Only thing that disappointed me was their sweet bread roll? It was moist but tasted like a scone and had a butter crispy breaded coating on top which did not compliment any of the flavours provided unfortunately. The place was in the middle of the manukau food court and seating was hard to find so I would recommend taking it home and eating it as it can also get quite messy.

Oh yum yum yum , in comparison to kfc , it's not as big portion size slightly smaller . juicier , lighter . so I felt way less guilty eating this . With KFC I always feel bad after eating it . This not so much it was delish . Honey buns yum potato & gravy ok , chicken on point .

It's a newly introduced fast-food in New Zealand. I'm hoping they'll add more branches because it beats KFC by far! The chicken had a rich flavoursome taste to it, the mashed potato is good and the honey butter buns are a must try!

Texas chicken is located out a typical food court environment out manukau. So don't expect it like the hype that Carl's J had when it opened out takanini before.

The honey butter bun is amazing but always sold out really quickly... So it's best to order before peak lunchtime or dinner hours! The chicken batter for both the tenders and full piece is definitely more fresh and crispy than Kfry! And the portion size for chicken piece is really big! It's not even a joke that actually 3 pcs of chicken can fill you up. Sides like chips and gravy is passable and better than Kfry.

However, the low score was given because of the inconsistency of the services that we got during the day. Since there's a large q of people waiting, some our orders had things misplaced or not given out. So hopefully Texas would be able to address this issue.

Apart from that, I am definitely looking forward to see a branch opening out central or east 😋
