Spectacular views from the summit and throughout the hike up! Make sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring a backpack for water. It is a couple hour journey round trip! I would recommend to walk UP from the ship/harbor side and walk DOWN the beach side. The reason for this is the way down has many stairs and is easier not to slip on the gravel because it is quite steep in some areas compared to the harbor side. The harbor side is mostly gravel with a lot less stairs. We also did the flat path that goes around the base of the mountain, which was much easier and more relaxing!

The best day in New Zealand!!! We climbed to the top of Mauao and loved it . It took us about an 45 min to get to the top and the same time down , but the views are spectacular. Mix of light rain and wind did not change our opinion. These trails are amazing. You can choose from different trails accordingly to your choice and experience, but all of them are spectacular. We started from the side of the port and got down on a side of main beach. With view of water, clouds and natural forest. Atlantic the bottom we found a lot of ships that met us very friendly.

This is a Must when in Mount Maunganui.Such a Nice Short Hike and has a few different Tracks. You can Walk around the Base and its flat and easy or go up to the Summit.Theres a Quick way which is full of Steps and steep in parts.Quicker but can be hard depending how fit you are.It isnt crazy hard though. The other track is a lot easier and you get to see the views from the other side which are stunning and the Port,Cruise Ships,Boats etc.Worth doing both tracks to get the Full 360 degrees views to get the Full experience.Highly Recommend.Remember to bring Some Water,Sunscreen and Use the Toilets if needed before you go.

Honestly a pretty fun climb. Not terribly difficult and plus there is a walking path that goes around if you don't want to climb to the top but rather just enjoy a nice stroll. We did both and it was worth it.

One of our fave places to visit. Parking a bit tough because its so busy but we usually get parked. A walk around or up the mount is a must. Amazing views from the top and equally great sea views when walking around. Great cafe's and eatery's, plus good shopping.

Due to a closed path, we did the steep climb up. A lot of steps but we made it ok. On the way back was down a gravel road for part of the way. Excellent views from the summit, though the lookout was a bit underwhelming due to the trees and a lack of space.

Almost gave it a 4-star as the main trail was very steep with mediocre views. But the view at the top is worth it. On my descent I took the back route which was longer but a more gradual incline and beautiful views - the better option in my option. It’s around 20-30 mins to walk the fastest (steepest) trail, 30-40 using the back trail. You can also walk the circumference which is longer again and almost completely flat

Do you love beaches? Walking? Hiking?Nature? Name it and you can do it all here, it is not that crowded, it is just fine to enjoy the nature while hiking until you reach the top of mount maunganui summit and you will find the picture perfect view for you😁 the view is really breathtaking for me.

Brilliant views, quite a steep climb and a pretty busy track. It took about 2 hours up and down with my 6 year old grand daughter. Not too hot yesterday which made it pleasant. Council are finishing an attractive star dial on the summit.

Amazing short hike. Many routes to take. Well signposted. I hiked during day, so can’t say much about hiking in the night/dark, but I did not see any lights on the way. So I assume maybe it will be difficult to see in the dark? 😕 The hike can take between 25 mins to 1 hour depending on how fit you are and which route you take. There are multiple routes you can take, with different routes having different levels of elevation - so some are moderate, easy or hard. It will tell you on the map at the base of the mount. Hike back down is quicker, but when wet, it can be slippery, especially down the steeper route. So take extra care. On the steep route which goes past the watertower, there are plenty of places with benches to stop for a moment of reflection, with a view of Tauranga Docks (west of the mount). On the route there several posts with information about local history. The routes are well signposted to point you in the correct direction.
