Great food, great prices.
We had a wonderful lunch at the star and garter, today. Delicious fish, with salad and chips. Even got a side-dish of cheese sauce to go with the chips. Got the "small" size meal; it was huge. I am so full. Great staff, it was very busy, but Lydia the waitress was very, very nice; despite being so busy. I know why people come here. Good food, great ambiance, excellent service and value. Thanks for a fantastic lunch!
Didn't actually planned to eat here but I was glad we did. Popped in for lunch and we ordered the roast of the day (pork) and a ribeye. Both dishes were excellent and the roasted potatoes were crisp on the outside while soft on the inside.
It was little wonder why the place was full of patrons when we left at about 1pm. Excellent food and service with free on-street parking just outside the restaurant.
Do not pass through Oamaru without stopping in Star and Garter for the best meal in town - and perhaps the best meal you've eaten in New Zealand. The menu has straight forward classic NZ fare that is made from scratch and served by the most delightful folks. My husband ordered the sensible pan-fried blue cod which was delicious. I ordered the lamb shank which was slow cooked to absolute perfection in red wine which later was perfected into gravy. The mashed potatoes were fresh and outstanding in their texture and the vegetables were tender crisp.
ps: do not miss out on a side of their home made cole-slaw.

Lovely friendly atmosphere, attentive but gave me space, highly recommend
Awesome food and warm vibe. Mushroom stack what we ordered was amazing, juicy mushroom with bread explored a forest in my mouth and the fried salmon cooked perfectly which crispy skin and juicy salmon two different taste satisfied all I want.
Definitely, weβll back for it.
Wonderful Blue Cod and Chips for lunch. Service outstanding, lovely staff and a beautiful sunny Spring day outside. I can thoroughly recommend this lovely old pub. Both my wife and I appreciate all the hard work that's put into delivering great food and service. Thank you to all concerned.
Really nice ambient restaurant. Clean and friendly. The service was great and the food matched it. The cod was yummy as was the lambs Fry. Lemon dessert was delish π

With most of the town closed on Good Friday we made an early reservation. Whilst busy the staff were polite and knowledgeable. The menu is great - full of favorites your mom made, ok we never had lamb shanks as kids....
The food was fantastic and filling.
We'll be back for sure!
An excellent meal had by all. Seafood Chowder was great and the Blue Cod was good size pieces and cooked to perfection.
