Review Viki Cafe - Onehunga

I love this joint. It's our go to when we just want a casual dinner but know the quality of the food will be spot on. It's certainly a "more than meets the eye" eatery and the food is so delicious: fresh and tasty. They have the friendliest staff and the cafe vibe is warm and welcoming. You need to get down here and visit Vietnam ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

It's great food (we are even making and eating more Vietnamese food at home now), affordable, and a nice little indoor - outdoor venue. Staff (I think all part of a family) are amazingly friendly, and continuously offer to help or do more. What a great place for brunch or afternoon coffee.

We've had many a meals both dine in & takeaway at Viki Cafe. The owners are lovely and friendly with genuine love & gratitude for both the food they produce and their customers! Our food has always been delicious & the atmosphere cosy & welcoming.

This is a jewel hiding in Onehunga. Exceptional service and really good food.

This is actually the best Vietnamese food I have had in Auckland. I had the beef pho and spring rolls and it was delicious, I have been to five other Vietnamese restaurants here in Auckland and this is the best in service, food, cleanliness

Cute, cosy, family-style business. Generous portions of delicious food, popular with locals. Caters well for those with dietary restrictions. The free jasmine tea is a lovely touch.

A favorite quick eat in Onehunga. Authentic flavors (ok its toned down for NZ tastes), quick, reasonable prices, and friendly service. The Pho are great!

This place has awesome food and a friendly young team , you can't go wrong here! . You couldn't ask for more and it's just 5 mins from home ๐Ÿ˜

Excellent place to eat, owned by a lovely young family. I go there whenever I'm in Onehunga.

Very dissapointed! Purchased the grilled lemon grass chicken on vermicelli. Cost over $15 and only received 5 small slices of chicken on a very large bed of noodles which were pretty much glued together and smelled disgusting. The โ€œsaladโ€ was coleslaw which did not taste fresh or โ€œauthenticโ€. I have eaten at many vietnamese eateries and found this to be an absolute let down considering how good the reviews are. Will not be returning!

Yummy food and friendly service!
Cant wait to go back for more :)

Their pho and spring rolls are better than any other places ive been to. ( try it out, hansan, otahuhu cafe).
The pork vermicelli was amazing also! The pork was moist and had that char grilled flavour :) i think it could have been perfect if there was more seasoning to it but thats just me :)
Awesome awesome place!

Visited this cafe because of the rating on Zomato. Cute little place with very friendly service. Ordered the marinated pork banh mi and the lemongrass chicken banh mi - didnโ€™t enjoy it. I LOVE banh mi but these ones didnโ€™t taste at all authentic, meat was tough, pate tasted strange and bread was chewy. Would recommend for the service but not for the banh mi.

Authentic Vietnamese cuisine tucked away in One Tree Hill. This little cafe is lovely in decoration and packed with flavours. Owners and staff are super friendly. The best bowl of Pho Bo (Vietnamese beef noodles soup) I've had in Auckland, very authentic. Summer rolls are quite different from other Vietnamese restaurants, instead of noodles and lettuce they only make it with prawns and vege, which is just as tasty and refreshing. The fried chicken (marinated in fish sauce) is Vietnamese home food at its best. We ordered 2 bowls of Pho, fried chicken, summer rolls and banh mi (Vietnamese baguette) and paid 55$, super reasonable. Apparently Viki is a local favourite so definitely check them out ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had grilled marinated pork vermacelli. Straight out of Hanoi. These are the sort of operators who, starting in street-side Onehunga, should end up in the Viaduct Harbour making millions.

Viki Cafe is a hidden gem. The food is top notch, authentic, healthy and flavor packed. The service is friendly and welcoming. They are always consistent, and are our go-to for a quick healthy meal on any day of the week

Came here because of all the rave reviews. Ambience is good, people are accommodating and friendly. Tried their beef pho and it legit was $15 for a few chunks of cheap Pak'n'Save skirt steak in your bowl with overcooked noodles and what just tasted like salt and water for the soup with a whole heap of coriander. Fresh rolls are even worse with one tiny piece of shrimp in each, rice paper tough, just really bland and tasteless. Haven't had such a bad meal in ages. Felt so ripped off

Really good fresh juicy tasty genuine Vietnamese food. Not cheap for a takeaway however good price compared to average resturant. Coffee is ok too. Outside sitting area availiable if you have a furry friend.

The food was amazing, we ordered a beef pho and duck fillet on vermicelli. The pho soup has very rich flavour and the rare beef has also soaked up the soup flavour. The duck fillet is so tendered and beautifully charred and flavourful. Staffs are very friendly and attentive. Definitely recommends for any occasions when you feel like some amazing Vietnamese food.

We went there for our date night, first the concept is nice, cute place with jazzy style of music, overall ambiance is great although place kinda small.
Ok now we get to the food :
- my chicken lemon grass doesnt taste like lemon grass chicken. It was more like chicken teriyaki with a hint of lemon grass
- my husband pho, taste very cinnamony too strong, but meat very soft and tender which is very good. Too bad they should serve with the famous tamarind sauce and just chopped chilly eventhough I do like the chilly in vinegar almost like indonesian Asinan sauce
- my dessert Lemon and Passion Fruit slices does not taste like lemon or passion fruit.
- my husband's macadamia and caramel slice was good though

Well it was our first trial and husband said he will give a second chance. I will try other stuff too but not the pho not until they minimize the cinnamon flavor

Cheers

Recommend the pho, with surprising taste of cinnamon. Spring rolls with creative use of pineapple. Desserts and coffee are great too! Excellent family atmosphere, with pillows, blankets, Vietnamese tourist kitsch on the walls, and welcoming jazz music. Dzn

Cute, cosy, family-style business. Generous portions of delicious food, popular with locals. The fried fish with tomato sauce is delicious but also canโ€™t go past the lemongrass chicken or the grilled duck - have never had a bad me here. Caters well for those with dietary restrictions but just make sure you tell the staff about any dietary requirements as some of the items labelled as gluten free on the menu are actually gluten free on request. The staff are really friendly and accommodating. The free jasmine tea in winter is a lovely touch.

We ordered the chicken skewers, beef pho and the spring rolls. Pho (the broth) lacks favour and was a little oily. The spring rolls were bland to my taste.

I personally admire how dedicated the owners are and hope that the food will improve so we can continue to support this local business run by the lovely couple.
Their food and all staffs are really great.
I get it why they have many regular customers! I had meals three times but wanna try to have dessert and coffee! I can't wait to go there lol thanks!

A little cute restaurant tucked away in the side streets of One Tree Hill. The pho was authentic and the spring rolls were good as well! The food was quality and right portions foo for the price you pay! The dessert was amazing! Mango coconut slice what a great treat to end the night! Cheers

Bought of my favourite drink here a while back, whilst shopping with some friends. I gotta say it sure it hit the spot despite not having anything or drink all day. So the hot chocolate was pretty much my breakfast and lunch in one.

The people were so kind and friendly when they served me and the wasn't even that busy which made my order a lot quicker to make.

Going inside, it has that hip-vibe. It must be the layout and decor of the cafe, where everything is very lively. And their variety of food look very creative, some are fused with others which I really wanted to try.

I had a beef salad there. The place is relax and friendly. great for a quick bite.
would recommend for lunches. I need to try takeaway next time but I am not sure the salad will still be fresh in the end.
K
Went here for lunch ordered chicken skewers on rice and chicken rice noodle.

Pros-
-Actually tasty food.
-Meals aren't so pricey $30- $35 for two main dishes.
-Friendly staff

Cons-
-If you sit outside the food will be on a slant because the cafe is on a hill.
-The food portion isn't big so it will cost more if you order more if you got a big tummy.
-Cafe is pretty small.

I love this place. There are cute seats both inside or outside. The food is fresh and delicious. But the staff are what really make it. They are kind and friendly and nice to chat to.

I went to the Viki Cafe for dinner with my partner before we went on our trip to Vietnam back in October, just to get a feel for the food. We went back once we had returned home and were incredibly impressed with the authenticity of the Vietnamese food from the Viki Cafe, in comparison to the food we experienced in Vietnam - we have been back again since. The food is consistently delicious and such a great price! The couple that work (I assume own..) the cafe are always very friendly and helpful. It's quite a small little cafe, but it's cosy. Probably best for lunch or takeaways due to its size and the fact that they don't serve alcohol. But still lovely for dinner for a couple or small group. Would definitely recommend a visit.

A quaint little place in the heart of one tree hill. Casual atmosphere inside and outside. We had dinner outside in the warm sunshine. The service was very good and fast. The food was delicious. All our meals were cooked perfectly and very tasty. I got the beef noodle dish and it was great. My hubby got the prawn salad which he loved. He said he had a very generous helping of prawns which was great. I will definetly be telling my friends about this cute little place.

Love this place! It's very cosy, and the owners are warm and welcoming. The food is delicious - authentic and reasonably priced. It's good feeling to support local businesses and this is one I'm more than happy to go back to again and again!

Had a nice meal at Viki Cafe. The lemongrass chicken on rice was really good. We also liked the bahn mi with grilled pork. Our daughter had beef pho which she said was yummy. Nice, friendly staff. Definitely recommended.
House Of Eats
CHEAP EATS TOP 10 - VIKI Cafe is located in One Tree Hill and although it takes me an hour plus drive for me to get there, I can tell you, they serve up one hell of a Pho (beef noodle soup) and Bahn Mi (Chicken & pate baguette). The food is sooooo authentic and super delicious it tasted just like I was back in Vietnam. Please dont let this tiny, humble cafe underestimate how great the food is! SERIOUSLY its amazing. What I love the most about this cafe, is they make all their food from scratch as well as their own french baguettes! However one thing missing from the menu was the famous Caphe sua da (ice coffee with sweetened condensed milk or Caphe sua nong (hot coffee with sweetened condensed milk. But wait... Although it wasnt on the menu the staff quickly rustled me up a Caphe sua da! Now thats accommodating! Brownie points in my books! Well I highly recommend this place if your in the area. I only wish it were closer! Look forward to coming back in the near future! Hen gap lai

Ordered grilled lemongrass chicken on rice, juice and a flat white for lunch today. Not as good as its comments/reviews here
1) basic thing: rice. They put too much water to cook the rice and it was so sticky like paste
2) coffee: milk. The milk was off and I asked them to make another one. It made no different. Still off.
3) juice: orange juice you can't get it wrong.

a bit disappointed.

Visited Viki Cafe last Friday for a quick work lunch. It's a very nice suburban cafe with reasonable prices and cute seating areas.

Tried out the Bahn Mi with lemongrass chicken for a mere $9! It was larger than expected and I highly recommend trying Viki's for a quick lunch.
Love this place, authentic Vietnamese that tastes great and has you wanting to go back for more. Nothing else to say but the food is great and owners are very nice people. Highly recommended.

A little quiet cafe tucked in the block of shops. An assortment of furniture of different colours and styles. Overall casual feel. Table was a bit wobbly as outside space was on a slant.

I ordered a beef pho and enjoyed it. The beef was tender although some pieces were overly tenderized (and this a bit mushy). The soup is one of the tastier versions I've tried around Auckland.

Summer rolls had a yummy filling of prawns and tasty coleslaw. Could have done with a good dipping sauce instead of fish sauce alone. Bottoms were slightly on the thicker side that were chewy.

Kumara fries on the side were very delicious, on par with those at Burger Fuel. Baked goods looked nice in the cabinet and apparently the brownie with coffee was superb.

Nice little cheap eatery for a casual meal.

Updated: 01.06.16
First day towards winter and back again. My friend been craving for their noodle soup that he had previously. Sit inside..had a hot chocolate n get cosy... Oh and i recommend the peanut butter cake ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜. A must!!

Can only think of good words for this place. There is not many cafe that closes 9pm and this place are one of them. I made a reservation for 7 people and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. It's not huge place so calling in to check is definitely a must.
I love the ambience and the selection of food. They cater both Asian and European food and there's nothing fusion about it. The Viatnamese Chicken Noodle taste authentic.
The service are friendly and they have a great team.
Everything about this place is just great. From the food, location, ambience and staff....a well managed cafe. ๐Ÿ‘โœŒ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Always a pleasure to have lunch at this wee spot. Friendly staff, food is priced well and it is fresh and delish! The chicken salad is so good, and it's presented so well on the plate. Definitely recommend a visit!

Well worth a visit, popped in for a quick lunch today after reading the positive reviews. Tried the Vietnamese beef stew (with rice), not sure how "Vietnamese" it was (?), but delicious none the less with that gelatinous texture which comes with a slow cook. Flat White wasn't too bad either. Don't have a sweet tooth but the cabinets cheesecake and slices, etc looked lovely and fresh. Would definitely come again, check out the ubiquitous beef pho next time. A small cosy cafe, very friendly proprietor/cook - good stuff.

Caught up with a mate for a late lunch today...enjoyed the beef pho's, pleasant service, will be back again!

What an unexpected pleasure! This place is a hidden gem and very popular among locals - we were surprised at how many takeaway orders they had. It's not big! But it's full of character and has a few good sized tables inside and out. The counter is full of quirky objects, the table tops are bright and recycled wood pallets are used for seating - an unusual combination but oddly enough it seems to work here.

The service is very good, the staff are really friendly and polite. They are hard workers too - constantly cooking in the kitchen, serving customers or clearing tables.

We ordered the Fresh spring rolls, Stir fried tofu & Vegetables (with rice noodles) and the Tofu salad. This was great value at $33 and was enough for the two of us plus a small takeaway pack. The food was fresh and really tasty. The portions are decent, we could've got away with two dishes between us. We were also pleased with the protein portions, which we thought was a lot more generous than some places.

Being so close to us we'll definitely be back and would happily order the same dishes again...and probably try out their smoothies while we're there too. It's nice to see local (and what seemed quiet) businesses doing so well!

Lovely service and good food makes Viki Cafรฉ a great place to know.

Had an amazing and incredibly cheap coconut dessert. The place is also very intimate and cozy.

Great food, beautiful and fresh. Lovely service. We went there mid week so wasn't too busy. The duck was delicious, everyone seemed to enjoy the food. Definitely go again.

Enjoyed a small family dinner at Viki Cafe

The fam discovered this place a few weeks back and was raving about it saying its just like Melbourne and tgats pretty bug as i love Vietnamese food there so I had to try it myself

I went in open minded and a little doubtful it being as good as Melbourne
We had:
Fried Vietnamese Spring rolls these were different but tasty. A bit softer than expected but still full of flavour
Deep fried tofu with peanut sauce, the sauce was delicious
Grilled lemon grass chicken, good rice serving and coleslaw like salad and the chicken wasn't too bad
Vietnamese beef noodle - the dish that tells you whether the place is good or not. It was yum, not your traditional pho that has been on the boil for hours but tasty. A bit sweet to start garnished well with mint and coriander and served with hot vinegar chilli. I enjoyed it
Vietnamese chicken noodle was also good
And the anticipated bahnmi (Vietnamese bread roll) we had the grilled pork it was ok, not what I was expecting. The bread wasn't the traditional French crusty bread it was closer to bap/panini bun and the pork could have been better, I was told the bbq pork is tastier.

All in all the cafe was lovely
The staff is friendly and the place has character
Don't expect what you think you know is Vietnamese as it has more of a traditional homemade style but delicious
Amazing! Best Vietnamese food I had! Been here so many time that they recognise me now. Would recommend to anyone who wants something made with love with great flavour and lovely safe. The coffee is great too which is a bonus :) everyone I've taken here loves it, and will come back for more. The spring rolls are my favourite! Could eat them everyday!

Took a girl here and she was so impressed I got a pash after. Not sure if it was the sensations of the banh mi, Bung ga nurong sa or the tenderness of Viki herself, but it certainly hit the spot.ย We will definitely be back.
Jamie Jiwon Shin
Second visit to Viki and even more impressed than the first. It is authentic and is very home made style type cooking. Me and my husband throughly enjoyed the dishes. We have been to many famous Viet restaurants and noodle bars around auckland ( Vietnamese cafe, Le Vietnamese kitchen, Hanoi cafe etc etc) but can say this joint will make it in our top three. Maybe even the best . This place is quite new and we live two minutes from here so will be coming more often. What I would like to see is more dishes introduced to the menu! We recommend the bahn mi ( Viet style sandwich), chicken pho and all the vermicelli noodle salads.
Peter Clark
got takeaways for dinner tonight. this location shop has gone through many different takeaways now finally an excellent one. very friendly helpful staff. nice atmosphere to dine in or outdoors very very casual. menu is limited but good variety. we ordered 5 dishes and all where excellent. definetly eat there again

This little place is awesome! I've been here twice now and both times have been absolutely amazing.ย The service is very friendly and helpful, the staff make you feel right at home. It's a pretty small shop but still really nice to dine-in if you're lucky enough to get a seat :)

So far, we've tried the Summer Rolls, Satay Chicken Skewers, Fried Tofu, Beef Pho, Lemongrass Chicken on Vermicelli, the Bahn Mi's and the majority of their freshly made juices/smoothies and EVERYTHING was divine! Very generous servings, packed full of delicious flavour, and cooked to perfection. My favourite is the Beef Pho, which comes with some super hot chilli on the side.ย

They also have a range of desserts - both times we've been far too full to try much, but we shared a slice of their brownie - so tasty! These guys do everything right.ย

Stoked to be living just up the road from this place - will definitely be a regular here!

Came to this lovely little place with my partner and her family, and was pleasantly surprised! The staff made all of us feel very welcome and was very eager to please. We ordered a few entries consisting of Satay skewers and rice paper rolls and each mouthful was as delicious as the next. All of our mains were consistent and left us comfortably full. As if it couldn't be better, they gave us a free dessert to top it all off. Not a Single complaint and would come back in a heartbeat! Louise MacNaughton
