Review Island Joe’s Hawaiian Bbq - Onehunga

The restruant give a very home feel to it, not that big and have some very nice comfortable seats. This is on my my good to foods if I feel like having something special. Their Ono pork is a must have also their rib platter is a good price and good size . Again this may not be the flashiest place but it has some tasty food.

Large servings of delicious dishes -- grilled, fried, stews. Original Filipino recipes with slight Kiwi twists. Accessible with friendly staff. Fast service, too.
Diana Peterson
Their special made sauce to compliment the Ono pork bbq was delicious and the pasta salad is always satisfying! Great combo

Looks like this business has closed as all fittings in the shop have been removed and the place is empty. No notices in the window to indicate that they have relocated.

So we thought of trying something other than "mall meals" after shopping most of the day with our little family. This little place was pretty decent for where it's located. Presentation wise could have been better. The only and biggest downfall about this place; they took our original order then 5 minutes later returns and says sorry we ran out of a lot of the items on the menu. After going through what they have left and a refund of some of the payment made we finally settled.<br/>We ordered<br/>Chips and chicken wings<br/>Marinated pork, yellow rice and salad<br/>Chips, ribs and side of salad

To be honest, I really like this place cause they have good food and they are the only one serving "Kansi" which is a favorite dish of mine.<br/><br/>However, for about 3-4 times that we went there, they didnt have that dish. What's worse was that half of their menu was not available. It was really bad.<br/><br/>My partner and I usually recommend this place to our friends but not anymore. Too disappointed to even go there. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

Visited this place on Sunday and we are satisfied with the service and food. Tried the Pork Belly BBQ and Crispy Island wings and they're both good. The pork is tender with nice barbecue flavour. The chicken is crispy and juicy. Will definitely try the other dishes next time. Only suggestion is to maintain the cutlery, tables and wash areas clean. A bit on a pricey side as well.

Rang in to make a phone order. at 0613pm asked to make a phone order. got told that theu had already closed. 1st Why answer the phone. 2nd why did closing sign say on a Sunday you close at 0730pm another hour and 17mins. <br/><br/>Sorry not sorry. from a hungry family

Tried their Island fiesta platter. Decent amount of meat. Good quality food. Don't expect any spice lol . Typical Filipino flavours . Touch of sweetness in all food. So if you are not used to that style of flavour , better to skip this place . However their food quality is very good .

Sad to say that this restaurant is quite disappointing, I would not want to recommend to anyone. Although I really wanted to like this place! We ordered sisig and la paz batchoy... First of all, sisig is traditionally served with garlic rice, however, apparently the sisig here does not come with rice and we had to pay $3 for plain rice (and it was such a small serving too). The food was lacking in depth of flavour, the kind of flavour you would expect from eating traditional filipino food. It really wasn't a pleasant experience overall and I apologise if this causes offence but you guys need to get your act together. Fridays should be one of your busiest nights, not the emptiest.<br/>

Crispy pata and sisig are the best. Price is okay for a $ rate ... it is not over rated and it really tastes good :) i love that they have iced tea hahaha

This is my favourite Filipino Restaurant. The only restaurant I can trust with giving me Crispy Pata that is tasty, tender and crispy at the same time. We always order their Pork Sisig and Java Rice. If you still have room for dessert, go for the Halo halo! Our meal won't be complete without their Iced Tea. Good prices and friendly staff.

Ambience is okay. Staff are good.<br/>Food is mediocre. Only few food in the menu was remarkable. <br/>Best part about this restaurant? I have been searching but this restaurant is The only one with ISAW cooked in a grill just like the ones in the Philippines. However, VERY EXPENSIVE 3 sticks for 10$ i think. I forgot the exact price but betweek 9 to 12$.<br/>Sizzling chicken was nice. <br/>The crispy pork hocks and the pig blood stew are the best we had in auckland.

Food - 3.5<br/>Service - 3.5<br/>Ambiance - 2.5<br/>Price - 3.5<br/><br/>Loved crispy tofu with pork. Pork sizzler had too much ginger in it (or perhaps I am just not a fan of ginger). Java rice did not taste like it - just coloured rice. Iced tea is delicious - but one other Filipino resto beats it.<br/><br/>It's a shame that it is situated outside Dressmart Onehunga that not many people go there to eat. Place is actually spacious and can accommodate a good number of diners. But it hardly gets busy.

Island Joe's is a self-service cafe-styled eatery. With a dinner voucher, we had lani chicken BBQ (chicken wings & drums marinated in honey & soy sauce) & crispy pork hock with Maui macaroni salad. Chicken tasted good; pork skin was huge & crispy, but there wasn't not much taste in it, although I was given an additional sauce of soy & chilli. (Food - 3/5; Ambience - 1/5)

Service was great, staff was very friendly, took my 3 kids and it was very suitable and they had plenty space outdoor covered area. Wait time was a little long and we had to pick up most of our food from the counter. The food was amazing our favourite was the spicy pork ribs! we tried 5 dishes they were great for 3adults and 3 kids spent around $110 and had ice cream for kids. Definitely going to be another 1 of our favourites. They have a hand washing area which is perfect too.

I tried their pork isaw (intestines) bbq skewers, it was priced $12 for 3 small sticks with a cup of rice, and a small side salad. Overpriced, but can't deny the yummy taste though. The real winners are grilled squid, adobo rice, and crispy fried beef (?) - ask for vinegar on the side. Trust me, it's really good.

Unclean. Long wait times. No spoons. No water glasses. Food was ok and nothing to go crazy about. We ordered 5 dishes only one was good. Pork bbq was delicious and but undercooked. Cant get anymore worse.

If I go to Dressmart, I usually visit this place... I always order their sizzling sisig that is really yummy... Crispy pata and BBQ chicken are the best... Friendly staff... Great food...

All is good in our orders but the isaw is a bit chewy. I dont know why. The ambience is nice. We came on a weekday afternoon and its quiet.

brouguht me back home to philippines! the chicken wings didnt have much taste though. but the sisig was so good ❤️ halo halo was great but i think it was too expensive for $14

The service was poor and the food portions were tiny. We ordered a share platter meal for two to three people which he recommended for us but i think it didnt even suffice and was very different from the picture in the menu. The front of house person was friendly, BUT he didnt have the time for any questions but just served the food in our table.

food is relatively weak in terms of relativity towards hawaiian bbq. service is almost none existent. hope this place gets better, it has the potential to be a good cheap eat!

First time here with my friend? Very welcoming. Kool arrangements. Easy meal to order. My friend and I ordered our first serving, wasn't full so ordered seconds. Love the bbq taste. The attendant was friendly. Meal we ordered delicious. Ordered 1/4 bbq chicken with salad, x2 times. My friend ordered the lamb, chips, pasta and salad and 2nd serving a chicken burger with chips. Overall taste- awesome. Recommend

Really good food at reasonable prices! I love how they serve java rice as well as white steamed rice and how they actually serve iced tea in a jug. Sisig and the crispy pork were worth the guilt. It's also very convenient as it is locted outside the Dress Smart shopping mall which means you can head over after hours of shopping! If you're a seafood lover, I highly recommend the grilled squid and the calamari! Service was great too, it's also a decent place for authentic filipino dishes
Kai Mai
Poor service, food below average. Macaroni had no flavour to it. What a shame to put Hawaiian BBQ as their name as their food was nothing near to what Hawaiian BBQ should be. Wouldn't recommend at all.

Had an okay experience here. Food is reasonably tasty and uncomplicated but nothing too out of the ordinary. The portions could be a bit bigger and service a bit more attentive. The food took way too long to be served for the type of items ordered. The décor is simple yet colourful with a small inside and a nice "semi-outside" area that is covered. Very conveniently located if you are out shopping at Dress Mart (Onehunga). Food 3.5/5, Service 3/5, Price 3.5/5, Portion 3/5

Ohhh!! I love there roast chicken, succulent and juicy! Cooked to perfection! They really know how roast well!<br/><br/>Does pork hock sound crazy? I think it's crazily delish! Whole hock get fried and serve with cracking! Crunch crunch! Have to share between 2 - 3 people! <br/><br/>I suggest a must try dessert 'Ube ice cream'. Ube is purple yam and you can really taste bits of Ube in the ice cream. They also have cheese ice cream, Strange!? Wait until you taste it! It will amaze you!
Richard Beacon
Very tasty pork and java rice, glazed with just the perfect amount of honey, but the portions are too Small!! (just my opinion) I want More!! Otherwise, I will not be back, sorry...

Well this place is a decent step-up from the Hawaiian BBQ I went to last week but it's definitely nothing special. Where oh where can I get the delicious Hawaiian BBQ that I had at the Pacifica Festival the other weekend? Whoever is the owner of the mysterious place, please come forward and let me reward you with a five. I don't care how crap the service is, I just want your delicious sticky-sweet chicken again! Joe's Hawaiian BBQ is quite good value for money but the chicken doesn't have much flavour and is served with a vinegar, onion and garlic dipping sauce. The sides are filling and fresh and taste ok, much better than the Hawaiian BBQ in Point Chevalier. You order at the counter here and they bring the food over to you. The staff here are friendly but the place is a bit run down. I probably wouldn't come back here but it was a pleasant enough experience.

Avoid. No pork hock or ribs available - the serving waiter just laughed at us no kidding! We got the sizzling squid aswell as the crispy pork belly. Where do I start.. the pork belly was overcooked and came with 2 chunks of cold sour cauliflower. The pork belly still had the hair attached, unsure if this is normal.. still offputting<br/><br/>The squid was a disaster.. cost close to $20 and came with 3 small portions of squid stuffed with chunks of raw onion and ginger. The ginger chunks were the size of your finger nail.. it came drizzled in a tinned bbq sugar sauce that gouped on the hot plate.<br/><br/>Now the pork belly was supposed to serve 2 but it barely filled my petite girlfriend of asian descent. When asked for a side of chips I was brought some canned chutney.. asked again for some chips but they never came after 20minutes so we just up and left.<br/><br/>The floors were sticky.. which gives you some idea of the hygiene practice. If I could give this place a -5 I would, for taking our money and laughing...

hi i have been to this place many times loved the food and service:). Prices are reasonable and love the BBQ chicken, i recommend to try it.<br/><br/>Thanks Island Joe's Team.

The service was bad. Today was the first time that we had gone to this eatery. We had ordered 5 meals as a table. We had recieved 2 meals within the first 10 minutes, then waited an hour before any of our other meals were even ready. When we went to see what was taking so long, they had messed up our order. They had been serving other tables before us. We asked for a refund, got our money back, however they were very hesitant on giving us a refund. But it was totally a waste of time. We will not be returning. Don't bother eating at this establishment.

It was my first time here, I ordered Ono Pork Barbecue. The food was not that bad for the price but still there are other better tasting fast food restaurants in Auckland. I just tried it here to experience it.<br/><br/>Update: I went here last Saturday after doing some shopping at Dressmart. I ordered BBQ Pork Belly and it was yummy. There's Isaw now apparently so I will definitely be back to try those.😁

A truly wonderful  restaurant, this restaurant has the most amazing food that I have tested. My parent and i already eaten there six times; and it keeps getting better and better! I describing its food as “contemporary new American cuisine” (although I’d note an emphasis on pan-Asian), the prices are reasonable, especially given the high quality and big portions. The customer service was excellent. The staff are very freind and helpfull.to everyone who love good food and good service I highly recommend this restaurant.

Dined with my friend here May 25 at lunch, it was fully occupied. Waited for 15 minutes for our food to arrive, wasn't disappointed, portions were generous and food up to our expectations. Can improve service better. Overall, good dining experience.

I have been meaning to write up a review on this place. I went here back in February because I bought a deal voucher from a website. First of all, the lady that served us had crap customer service - wasn't very friendly, and never smiled. she also wasn't very helpful. Then we received our food.. the food is kind of nice but the portions were TINY. The macaroni salad portion I had gotten was about a tablespoon amount and the roasted vegetables were cold and hard. The ono pork was nice, but once again, the portions were very disappointing.<br/><br/>All in all I would not recommend this place - there are plenty of other places to eat in Onehunga that has much better food and customer service than this place.
Vanessa
Was there today. It is a disappointment. Food is not good and overpriced. Owners/hosts have zero customer service. No social skills at all. Shouldv've gone to McDonalds instead. I don't recommend this eatery at all.

I went with my husband and two kids for dinner on a Sunday. It was our first time there and I have to say it would be our last. We spent $70.00 and the food taste like it was microwaved. The pork katsu tasted like they just warmed it up after it was left there for hours. The area we were sitting at was so untidy it had food everywhere on the floor. So low standard! Food was not even near worth our money. I think the only thing I enjoyed was the can of drink I bought to drink. I will not recommend this place to anyone seriously.

We went in with a meal voucher which seemed like it would be great value. While the servings lived up to the promise, the food itself was no more than average compared to the massive range of fast food/casual dining options available in Auckland.<br/>What really disappointed was the service, when we arrived we were greeted at the counter by a fellow who after being shown our deal voucher simply walked away! We were eventually served about 10 minutes later, despite being the only people waiting, by the only other person who seemed to be working there.<br/>As far as fast food goes I don't usually worry so much about quality of service as long as it's fast, Island Joe's failed to deliver even that.
Tony
Please avoid going to this place if you are using deal voucher. The girl at the counter is the most depressing person you will come across. No sooner she sees you are using deal voucher, her face changes. The quantity of food is so small, which is almost half the actual size. Half of the things are not available to voucher customers. The BBQ Grill is not used as shown in picture. The food is OK. The Main Chef/Big Senior man is good, but this girl should be kept away from front desk. She should be made to work as kitchen hand. Keep away, keep away and avoid that depressing girl, if you are using any discount vouchers.

From food to service to management... Its disgusting.!! I went to eat there with my wife and ordered Calamari and sisig and 2 glass of ice tea. I have to say Ice tea is not bad, but I like their water better. If you re going to ask me hows the food... I would say rubbish.. calamari was taste like it was cook on old oil and the sisig wasn't even hot it taste like they just microwave it.<br/><br/>No manager on the site so when we went home my wife called the manager whos name is Cynthia and pass on our feedbacks and what do we get stab at the back and she call my wifes a bitch. My wife called the owner and even the owner is being smart ass we decided to post it on their facebook page, no apologies no explanation and our post got deleted. And btw the feedback that my wife gave them was over the phone so no customer will know and they will have a chance to improve it. But noooooo I dont think they know anything about constructive criticism... anyways just wanted to share my experience, I would like to give them negative star but I dont have an option

Went to Island Joe's yesterday with a deal voucher. I got to say, the food was very good!. Also the portion size was very nice, even without the voucher it's actually well priced. My partner loved the ONO Pork and the crème caramel was really nice. Will definitely come back to this place more often!. Can't wait to try the Sizzling Pork :).

Went to Island Joe’s after shopping in Dress Smart to grab late lunch. We were already starving then, so we were really keen for a full-on meal… and did we get it!<br/><br/>The restaurant was conveniently located near the mall, so we had no trouble finding it. It was a bit busy, but we were promptly served. I loved the ambiance of the place, with the bright orange walls, decorated with surf boards! It was perfect for a casual afternoon lunch with a group of friends. Comfy cushioned seats, relaxed eating area, and clean toilets too! <br/><br/>I had the Ono pork with java rice and mac salad, and it was very delicious and filling! Good value, considering the full plate and the fair price. Really missed the BBQ-style cooking, so this really hit the spot! We also tried the Spicy Pork Sizzler, and it was simply mouth-watering and full of flavors (I could have finished the entire plate myself!)<br/><br/>I would also recommend the onion rings, or the calamares to start! We washed the food all down with a pitcher of cold iced tea! Yum!<br/><br/>Will definitely come back, as we were too full for dessert, but they look promising too! Especially that buko pandan! Anyway, it was the perfect end to a shopping day-trip, and I am glad that my friend had recommended it!

I have been here once and it was horrible. Service was bad. The lady who served me was very unwelcoming. Rice wasn't cooked all the way and was dry in some parts. Sauce on the over cooked pork was way to sweet and tasted very artificially flavored. The panna cotta dessert was dry on the sides. I couldnt even eat any of it and Im not that picky but bad is bad I live in Onehunga and everyone else I know who has gone there was been mortified by the quality of the food &amp; service. Very disappointing because it was nice at first the thought of having a different kind of food in Onehunga.

My family and I both drop by at Island Joe"s Hawaiian BBQ..I fully recommend this restaurant for families..<br/><br/>The prices are reasonable, quantity and quality is good. Fish dishes are quite nice when grill.<br/><br/>BBQ Chicken is my favorite and the Crispy Pata, plus the dessert.
Richard Lewis
Best ever onion rings! Moana burger with beef or chicken is a big fave - massive bun. I recommend you pair it with a jug of iced tea. My partner loves the tuna and bbq chicken but there are new ones on the menu. Must try them. Thanks guys. See you again soon.
