Review Mexico Food And Liquor - Petone

We were welcomed by the crew and guided us to our table. The ambience was really adorable. Good place to dine in. Good customer service. The food: our favourite was the Ceviche. It has fresh ingredients and refreshing flavours. The crispy corn shards gave at a great texture and flavour. Our family also tried the fried boneless chicken with two mayo sauces: jalapeno and chipotle. Both gave compliments to the chicken but I loved the jalapeno more. The tacos came on a single order. We've tried the chicken, pork, and fish tacos. Soft tacos and each one offered a good combination of flavour. My favourite among the three was the fish. It had multiple texture and flavours the created a balance taste. The beef brisket burger also tasted good. The chicken quesadilla came into four pieces and was good to share. We've also tried the patatas bravas. Cut into cubes and fried. Dressed with chipotle mayo, salsa, and crispy kale. The stuffed jalapeno and the coleslaw that came with it is a must have. For the dessert, we've tried the churros with dulce de leche sauce. The churros were perfectly cooked and seasoned. However, I wish that the sauce could have been a little bit thicker so it can stick to the churros better. All the drinks that we had also tasted good. We've tried the tropical guava, the pineapple-strawberries, and the horchata (a rice based drink).

The restaurant interior decor is awesome and so colourful in the Mexican theme. Loved all the framed photographs on the walls and the brightly coloured toilets. The service from our waiter was fine, but just could've been a bit more friendly and we felt a bit rushed when asked a few times if we're ready to order. It would've been good service to introduce themselves and ask the customer if they need help with the menu. The food was really good and tasty. We had the braised brisket tacos and the slow braised lamb shoulder quesadilla with crispy cauliflower on the side. Good presentation to serve the main meals on a wooden board. All dishes were very yummy. Also had the churros for dessert. I thought it would've been served with a yummy rich caramel sauce but it was more like a slightly sweet peanut/almond sauce as it had chopped nuts in it. The cocktails and sangria are good too. Atmosphere was busy and very child-friendly. My only criticism about the menu is it doesn't tell you if there is 1 or 2 tacos served with the meal or the size of the taco. I only found this out by asking the waiter about the meals.

Review Title: A Fiesta of Flavors at Mexico Petone! I recently dined at Mexico Petone, and it was nothing short of a culinary adventure! From the moment I walked in, the vibrant atmosphere caught me in its warm embrace. The eclectic decoration, reminiscent of a colorful Mexican street, sets the perfect backdrop for a lively and enjoyable dining experience. The staff at Mexico Petone was exceptional—always attentive, friendly, and prompt without being intrusive. They were knowledgeable about the menu and offered great recommendations. Their passion for their work shines through in the meticulous attention to detail and the welcoming environment they create. Now, let's taco 'bout the food! The menu was a treasure trove of traditional Mexican dishes with a modern twist, and every bite was a discovery of fresh and bold flavors. The tacos are a must-try; with each bite, you're transported straight to culinary bliss. Perfectly crafted with homemade tortillas, filled with a choice of succulent meats, and topped off with fresh, zesty salsa, these tacos were a delight. Their Quesadillas were equally impressive — a perfect blend of cheese and fillings that melted in my mouth, complemented by the smokey flavors of their house-made sauces. The Ceviche was a refreshing palate cleanser, with just the right amount of citrus to balance the fresh seafood. Not to be overlooked are their handcrafted cocktails. The Margaritas were simply sublime, not too sweet, not too tangy, striking the perfect balance. Sipping on their cocktails was like enjoying a little sip of heaven. Mexico Petone isn't just about dining; it's about the experience. The background music, a blend of contemporary and traditional tunes, was lively and yet not overpowering, allowing for easy conversation. It wrapped the entire dining experience in a festive and cheerful ambiance that makes you want to linger longer. In conclusion, if you find yourself in Petone and in the mood for Mexican food, Mexico Petone isn't just a restaurant; it's a destination. Go for the food, stay for the joy, and leave with memories of a meal that is as much about passion as it is about flavor. Olé! (And if you're pondering desserts - do yourself a favor and try their Churros, absolutely the icing on the cake of a magnificent dining experience!) Loved every moment and morsel. Until next time, Mexico Petone! — A Truly Delighted Diner

Can't fault the service and food at Mexico Petone. My partner and I would come here occasionally to change things up and is genuinely a good experience each time.

Grabbed dinner here tonight and had such an incredible time. Not to mention we took advantage of Taco Tuesday (taco + marg for only $15!!) We tried a range of items from their menu, chicken taco, cauliflower taco, Chimichangas (mushroom, cactus, leek, mozzarella, coriander, salsa borrach), Esquites (chipotle buttered corn, coriander, queso, burnt onion crema, tortillas), broccoli florets and the Patatas Bravas which were all insane. I also had the app which means everytime I come in I get free Totopos 🥹 Definitely great value for money here… especially on a Tuesday 🌮

Service was good, loved the look of the place. The drinks and most of the food were good, apart from the pulled pork quesadilla lacked flavour and the pork was dry. The sauce made up for the flavoring of it but was still abit disappointing. Will still continue to dine here as I would love to try different dishes off the menu! Thank you.

Had an amazing dinner here at Mexico. Staff here were really friendly to help us decide what to order and explain the rough sizes. Everything tasted great and am excited to return.

Having been a fan of Mexico in the CBD for many years, I was pleased to find that the Mexico in Petone lives up to the high standards and equally high expectations. A bit roomier and brighter, the space was still as welcoming and the food was just as delicious. I’ll definitely be back now that I’m in the neighbourhood.

We visited with a Mexican food virgin, and chose a range of different meals to try. Our newb was suitably impressed as were the more seasoned veterans. Great food, great tequila cocktails, nice staff and a great spot.

Great service. Wonderful food. Their desserts were excellent. Quite impressive menu with vegetarian and vegan options too. Will go back again for sure.

Greeted at door, no waiting required note I didn't have reservation but was seated immediately. Staff were genuine and both respectful and professional. There for WOAP burger "Cinnamon & Agave" burger was amazing the pork belly was melting in the bun, this was the hero of the burger the other components complimented the whole burger. I have attached photos showing menu and drinks note these regularly change. Good for families as kids menu and high chairs available for the smaller ones. Note they don't do tea and coffee but they have a selection of beer, wine, sangria and cocktails/ mocktails. Private room/ function room for up to 30 seated available. Accessible by wheelchairs, I was advised tables and toilet can be used by wheelchairs, note unsure about disabled parking?

Amazing Mexican food, come in on weekday for dinner and was showen to my table with no fuss and with a smile. Didn't really know what to order but the waitress gave me a suggestion to start my self off with the spicy chicken and it was delicious. Great place to go and share food as a group, had a couple of tacos highly recommend the duck taco. Friendly staff, clean outfit if your in petone drop in. Also don't forget to have a margarita!

We had it delivered by delivery easy and it was not very good as food wasn't hot when we had it in our house. Complained to the restaurant and went there again to have it in the restaurant. We had the fish, chicken and prawn tacos ect. They were really beautiful. Also it's very kids friendly place. Have a good changing table in the bathroom which is crucial! I would definitely recommend to have their tacos. probably the best taco in Wellington. Thanks for the good experience.

Went here on the weekend, food is average at best, with no real flavors. Lamb shoulder taco very disappointing where is the spice??? Why call your restaurant Mexico when you can't emulate the real Mexican flavors. Anybody reading this, save yourself money and go to Tequila Joe's on Vivian st.

Was disappointed with the food, we went for lunch and ordered from the menu. We only got 6 pieces of fried chicken when waitress said there were 8/9 pieces, plus it was a bit greasy and the chicken and lamb shoulder taco lacked any exciting or punchy flavours. I’ve had better at the Auckland restaurant and surprised that quality of food was so different.

Second time going to Mexico and definitely loved the food again! Although the portions are a bit small but it is great to order a few dishes and share it. The lunch menu is great as you get a drink included. I gave it a 4/5 as the drinks were a bit too watery and did not enjoy the texture of one of the snacks ordered. However overall loved the other things we had ordered especially the tacos, guacamole and fried chicken. Great service and will be popping in for lunch again. The food came out very quickly as well.

Cauliflower tacos and beef skirt tacos were exceptional. It did set our expectations really high for our next dish, but when the fried chicken arrived on our table, we’re a bit disappointed with the serving size as we were told beforehand that it was for sharing. Also, the fried chicken was lacking FLavOUR.

Overall, we think we’d try dining here again but just order the tacos instead.

Waiters emphasised that the portions were great for sharing but the dishes we ordered were small enough servings to leave my family and I still hungry after the pricy meal. If the size didn't disappoint, the taste did. Bland in flavour. Feels more catered towards having drinks and side dishes.

The Mexico franchise has arrived on a corner site in Petone that features large windows, bringing welcome light to Mexico's usually dark decor. The menu changes every three months and there is an extensive drinks menu. We ordered five dishes, ample for two of us to share. We really liked the Mexico fried chicken and patatas bravas, which were both delicious. The turmeric battered fish taco and crumbed button mushrooms worked well but the pomegranate lamb taco was disappointing. We were surprised that it was made with mince and the flavour was underwhelming. Very fast service and a reasonably priced meal.

Good place in Petone, like cos the athmosphere is casual, friendly and unpretentious. Great for a casual night out. Very good veg selection as well!

Service was very lovely but the food was not that great. Ordered a wife variety of food including the welling on a plate burger and it definitely wasn't a competition dish. Lack of seasoning, sauce and the pork belly was very average. No taste at all, only had two bites and was done. The fried chicken and croquettas were the highlight of the night, the remoulade was oh so delicious and all though all the food could have used some seasoning the sauces made up for it. We ordered the short rib also but it just tasted like meat no seasoning, sauce or flavour at all. The crumbed mushrooms were yummy but the smaller bits were burnt. I ordered the prawn taco and my prawns were very overly overly cooked, was hard to eat literally but my partner said his chicken taco was delicious.

Overall a very average night but ended on a high with the amazing creme Catalan dessert, 10/10 for that.
Eating My Way Around
Great service, yummy food and great selection of drinks, what more could you ask for? The chimichangas were so good, I could eat them every day! Love the veg options throughout the menu and great to see a vegan option for dessert which was a rare treat

Mediocre at best. We found that our quesadilla pork belly flatbread wrap and rubbed beef lacked real flavour and punch. The rubbed beef dish cost $29 for 3 pieces of beef about 3cm x 2cm, this was accompanied by 2 cauliflower florets and about 3 carrot pennies- terribly overpriced! The margarita prices are also a little on the pricy side for what you get- 2 small tumblers mostly made up of ice.

Nice restaurant in Petone I’ve been to twice now. Price was good and food was good. Service was VERY fast. The tacos are definitely my favourite on the menu.

We got exactly what we went for. I loved the atmosphere, choices on the menu and service was lovely both times.

Great value for money in my books. We will be back :)

Stoked this has opened in Petone. Had dinner here tonight - & like the other Mexico restaurants that I have been to (Sylvia park & Dixon Street) it was busy & vibrant. The service my group received all round was great, the food was delicious & the drinks were 👌🏽. Highly recommend the peach & honey carafe& the spiced duck soft shell taco. Also give the beetroot dip a try if you want a change from the guacamole.
The Mad Diner
Not even Mexican food!!!! The most bizarre Mexican menu I have ever seen. Being raised in Texas growing up with mostly Mexican friends, lived in California and also spent a great deal of time in Mexico. I worked in a number of Mexican restaurants both Mainland and Baja style, in the kitchen and waiting tables and I didn’t recognise anything on the menu. All I wanted was some Mexican food! Got some rhetoric from the waiter on how they were a Kiwi-Mexican-South American-Spanish fusion place. Sounded a bit more pretentious and experimental that I prefer and I didn’t get it, so I just got up and walked out.

If I could give 0 I would.
1. Food was so tasteless and not good value for money
2. Staff were rude, didn’t check to see how our food was.
3. No plates, dirty cutlery and no water for the table.
Safe to say this was our first and last time going to this place. Disappointed!
Tina
First and last time, the service wasn’t that great. The water came last, no plates , no salt and paper. Food portions are very small and the chicken was uncooked and chewy.
