Review Goku Shabu Shabu - Queenstown

Piggy Eatalot
Heard great reviews about Goku Shabu shabu so I thought I’d try. Kiddos were hangry so we got them some edamame beans to start, as well as miso soup. I ordered a ramen each for them then got the lobster shabu shabu for two for us. I am not too sure how it works to be honest, because while the lobster is quite big, the accompanying veggies and noodles are too small to be satisfying for two people. The lobster was ok- lots of meat, however, not as fresh as I had in other places. The shabu shabu came w chicken soup and a yuzu dashi soup, both matched perfectly with our meats and veggies which we loved. We had to order another side of meat and another side of veggies as well - the eye fillet beef was very nice. Kiddo’s yuzu duck ramen was delicious, and the big kid seemed to like his miso beef ramen- he ate it too quickly for me to try any! Service-wise, I felt that they are really short staffed as they were not super attentive. Halfway through our meal they didn’t refill our water and also forgotten our additional order of beef.

I visited this restaurant with my friends, and we decided to take the waitress's recommendations for our meal. The sukiyaki sauces and shabu hot pot we ordered had a wonderfully mellow flavor. The New Zealand Wagyu beef and Sashimi we had were of acceptable quality. The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere, adding to the overall dining experience. If you're searching for a Japanese restaurant in Queenstown, I would highly recommend this one. While the prices may be on the higher side, they are justifiable when you consider the quality of the ingredients and the overall dining experience.

This restaurant makes me feel warm in this spring. The sashimi are very fresh and can feel the chef's care for the ingredients The servise are the best they patiently explained to me even my English no well. I recommend the sukiyaki that is so delicious cook with the meat dipping with the raw egg. Do not forget the udon as well. The shabu shabu broth also refreshing as well but sukiyaki is the first choice for me. For the price difference people have different views. For me still acceptable and felt worth it in QT. Overall very good and I will come again with big group then sharing is more cost-effective.

1. Nice Ambience - The restaurant was clean & peaceful with comfy temperature. 2. Great Service and Friendly Staff. - The staff were friendly to our toddler and even entertained him a little. They gave us a nice table as well away from other customers so we can eat and entertain our child without disturbing others. 3. Delicious food - we didnt mind paying a little extra because it was worth it. Will def come back next time we’re in Queenstown

Fantastic dining experience last night! Super friendly staff, delicious food! We were a big group and had a bit of everything and it was just getting better and better. Wagyu beef dumplings absolute must to have, salmon and tuna sashimi 10/10. NZ Rib Eye was delicious. Thank you for having us!

Excellent service and amazing food. We had a great night here. It is a restaurant that I am happy to recommend to my friends. The boss is so kind and nice. Will definitely come back.

The sukiyaki pot is delicious, but the king salmon doesn’t taste as fresh as freshly cut. Overall, it’s pretty good.

Service, food, and ambience is excellent here. If you like more flavour, go for the sukiyaki, if you want something nice and warm during the cold, definitelynthe shabu shabu. Thank you for dishing our good food here in Queenstown!

Delicious and healthy option right in Queenstown. The tempura was delicious, and the Shabu Shabu broths were amazing. If Japanese food is new to you, they’ll help you understand the menu and cooking tips! This was perfect when we were craving something light and veggie based on vacation.

Overall experience was excellent. I love the shabu shabu, the soup bases were nice. Beef and the seafood were fantastic, too. But only 4 stars due to slightly overpriced, the amount of food is quite small. However, no doubt the food quality is excellent with excellent service.

One of the best restaurants in Queenstown. We did the hotpot Shabu Shabu. Food was high quality, fresh and a nice break from burgers and chips. Tables well spaced for a relaxing dinner and super clean. Service attentive and friendly.

Loved the vibe and food. Prices are not too bad for Queenstown. Sashimi was fresh, wagyu gyoza were great too. It was my first time trying shabu shabu and the friendly staff explains how to do it. Shabu shabu is enough for two, along with one or two entrées.

We had the set menu with shabu shabu and sake. It was so good, the staff were really friendly and gave us great recommendations (three of us, ended up getting the set menu and adding extra). Food was delicious and flavoursome. It was really sweet that they gave us a free dessert so that one of us wouldn’t be left out. Highly recommend to visit while in Queenstown!

The staff were friendly, and the food was great. Don't recommend if you are gluten intolerant. Definitely worth trying hotpot at least once as it is a different experience. Also, worth trying the chicken curry here. I recommend this restaurant to most people, however if you have any gluten allergies, this probably isn’t the restaurant for you. One member of our group was celiac (gluten intolerant) and although they tried their best to cater for us, there were very few options for them to eat given that all the soup bases contain Gluten as well as all the noodles. Still giving 5 stars as for those of us without a gluten intolerance it was a five-star experience.

Amazing service and delicious food. The sashimi was genuinely some of the best I’ve ever had outside Japan, and the quality of the beef/pork belly that came with the shabu shabu was very fresh. Queenstown is full of really touristy spots that offer mediocre food, but Goku is leagues above those. Possibly the best meal we had here over a week. Definitely recommend!

I DO NOT WRITE 5 STAR REVIEWS LIGHTLY. This is truly 5 stars. Service was great, staff were so kind to us (including bringing Sukiyake out unprompted for us to try because they were so proud of it). But most importantly, THE FOOD was top notch. Yes, it was expensive, but the meat quality matched the price. And their Shabu Shabu and especially Sukiyaki preparations were EXCELLENT and accommodated my wife's gluten intolerance. We've been to a lot of the top QT restaurants this trip and rate this meal right up at the top.
