We had dinner here on a Friday evening recently. We were made to feel very welcome, the meals were lovely and the décor and atmosphere great. The live music was very popular with all the diners and wasn't too intrusive on conversation. Table staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Our meals arrived promptly, and we enjoyed it so much we came for dinner the next night. We will be back next time we are in Tairua.
My husband and I had our wedding anniversary dinner at The Old Mill Cafe. The food was absolutely divine. 5 Stars for the starters, main meals and deserts!! Background music was lovely and the waitress/manager were awesome! I recommend The Old Mill Cafe when visiting Tairua.
Great location, friendly service, relaxed dining. We have eaten there 3 times now when passing through Tairua and are continually impressed by their interesting and delicious food.

We came in as a table of six and spent the next two hours thoroughly enjoying ourselves. We ordered two bottles of the house pinot gris, with the table split between the Salmon with Nicoise salad (always a fav!) and the battered fish, which was gurnard on the night. The carrot cake was a nice way to finish my meal too.
The thing that sets the Old Mill apart from a city restaurant is it's ambience. Our table enjoyed ourselves so much as we understand that a seaside town restaurant will take a different approach to a big city restaurant, and I really enjoyed the experience.
I would recommend this great little restaurant to anyone going out for dinner in Tairua, for the food and also the good times that seem to flow from a place in such an amazing position.
I was at the Old Mill on the same evening as the 'David S' review posted on the 26th September. I do not usually write reviews as I feel people with a chip on their shoulder can do much damage without any justification. As a professional chef, culinary tutor and food writer I see enough of this petty banter.
Fantastic coffee and great food. We always head for The Old Mill when in Tairua, it's consistently very good, got loads of character and handy to the awesome Tairua Ocean beach.
Fantastic location. Exceptionally clean comfortable and Friendly. Food and coffee consistently good. the staff and owners always friendly even when run of there feet. Lovely little boutique shop. Could chill out on the comfy sofa all day given the chance.

Fantastic meal! Late lunch and we were hungry! Loved the Hot Water Brewing Co beer. Great service awesome menu selection. All 3 things we ordered come highly recommended. The Spanish Egg Bowl was delicious and totally filled the spot. Daughter had the Churro pancakes and is raving about them. Wife had the pork sliders and said they were delicious. Lovely atmosphere and fantastic friendly staff. Give it a go I say!
I am never going anywhere else to eat in Tairua again! Lovely staff, selection of cabinet and from the menu all look and sound so good. I got the pancake stack while mum had the sour eggs. Could not fault either and the coffee was perfect. Love the authentic decor and atmosphere. Outside dining let’s you view the beautiful harbour. Dog friendly (outside) while dining is appreciated.
The host was so lovely and helpful, really friendly and made us at home. We had a large group and she kept every one of us happy. The food was delivered to everyone in a timely manner and got it all correct, a mean feat considering the size of the group. We both opted for surf and turf. It was an open sandwich with a generous, medium-rare piece of steak and several juicy, garlicky prawns and salad. Came with fries but we were so full after the steak we struggled to get to them. The restaurant has an amazing view of the Tairua River that was a perfect compliment to the meal. Will recommend to others.

I have to say this place was a lovely location and friendly staff. Worth the drive around the coast . 5 mins of the main road. Food was really well presented. Worth a visit . They are closing fir 3 weeks in july . Sorry eat my food to quick and forgot to take a photo.

Amazing coffee, breakfast and cabinet food! We had breakfast in and got take out to take with us for lunch. Definitely will be back! Cute indoors and shady outdoors that is dog friendly.
Great spot, not much on site parking for the summer season, but a very small walk and you're there. We arrived just as the kitchen was closing, but the staff checked in and advised a couple of times to make sure we were aware, it felt more like a good service than trying to stop customers from letting them close up. Since we only wanted to stop in for a cool drink and some pastries from the cabinet, that was fine. A little on the expensive side, but the food and drinks were top notch.
