The food is really delicious. Service is reasonably quick. and staff are friendly and helpful. The portions could be a big larger though.

The place is nice with very welcoming and organised staff. The wait time, however, was a bit long. Not the staff don’t tell you, but still… The food… It was amazingly delicious. Everyone enjoyed their dishes.👌🏽 I will definitely go back there in the future 👍🏼.

The best Japanese food we had in Auckland. The portions were generous with great presentation. The staff are very nice too.

The vibe of the restaurant has a perfect balance for dinner and socialising. Food is great, fresh sashimi. I can still taste the fat of the salmon in my mouth. A lil bit pricey, but nothing unusual nowadays. Prepare to spend $50 per person for a scrumptious meal.

We had a lovely dinner here. All the food was very tasty and even though they were understaffed the service was good. Highly recommended

Authentic Japanese taste and plates are beautifully presented. Love their open kitchen design where you will be able to view how your food is prepared and even interact with the chefs. Highly recommend their dinner sets. We ordered 4 different dinner sets and all of them are beyond my expectations. Asian Taste dinner set came with sashimi , tempura set, teriyaki chicken and had both rice and udon in smaller portions, it brought us variety of flavors and is definitely worth the value. Kiwi dinner set and the Dinner box were both wonderfully prepared with lots of different flavors. We didn’t know which one to start with. All of them are really delicious. We were also surprised to get two mains in our Teriyaki Dinner set. Both the chicken and fish were freshly cooked and very tasty. I couldn’t recommend this place more. Just wish that we could have the same kind of restaurant in central Auckland as well.

This Takapuna Japanese restaurant is very good 👍 The food selection is wide and caters for most taste buds. Prices and middle of the road not cheap and not to expensive 🙃. The tempura prawn Cutlets were excellent as was the friendly service

Such an amazing experience here. Everything was tasty and well presented. Staff were attentive and friendly. Just consider booking a table as it can get quite busy, and there can be a bit of a wait, but well worth it.

I ordered Lunch Special of two choices. Teriyaki Beef and Karaage Chicken. Heavenly taste.

Authentic Japanese food with reasonable prices and great dinner sets which offer little bits of different things. The fish is fresh as can be, the tuna tataki is mouth watering and so delicate. The fresh salmon spring rolls are so delicious and light. I recommend the kyoya delight, you get a bit of everything for a great price and will leave you feeling satisfied!! The staff are super friendly and I have to rate it as one if the best Japanese restaurants in Auckland, with decent prices for good quality Japanese food!

Kyo-ya in Takapuna has long been a favourite of ours .We recently enjoyed a lunch with friends and, as always, the food was delicious. Our waitperson Hanna was friendly, helpful and delightful to deal with. Highly recommended.

Beautifully presented, very tasty Japanese food. We had Dinner box and Kyo-ya delight - both great, plenty of food too.

Food tastes great and at a very good price - I would recommend ordering the lunch special. Staff are friendly and service is great. The restaurant is well lit with much natural light which adds to the atmosphere.

Absolutely excellent service. Very warm and welcoming! I usually get the Kyoya Delight. Delicious and generous portion. Loved the plum wine. My partner who is celiac is very well looked after. Definitely one of the best Japanese restaurants in Auckland.

Have been here a few times and it never disappoints. The food is very very fresh, and the staff are super friendly. Value for money. Personally think this is the best Japanese Restuarant in Takapuna.

◾Great Service
◾Great Food

There is nothing I can say that is negative in any way.
From the second we walked in to smiley and happy staff, to being seated quickly.

The food was perfect, from taste right through to presentation.

I cant believe I worked less than 100 metres from here for 8 years and never went in!! Will def go again and recommend to anyone

Had a great meal here with my wife. I love sashimi, but I don’t eat the rice, so I turn nigiri into sashimi too and rice for my wife and kids.

Service: 4/5
Presentation: 4/5
Environment: 4/5
Food Quality: 5/5
Food Quantity: 4/5
Price per person: $20-$40

4.5/5 Taste
5/5 Display
4.5/5 Quantity
4.5/5 Customer Service

Perfect Japanese Restaurant in Takapuna.

This place had the most beautiful dishes I have ever seen at a Japanese Restaurant.
Just speechless, if you are an instagramer or a food blogger or even if you do reviews on Zomato, this is the place to go.
I ordered the vegetarian dinner, this was very plain and had no real flavor. The vegetables were deep fried, which added an element of crunch which was nice. Came with 6 small pieces of cucumber sushi this was disappointing as it was very boring. The staff were very friendly and admirable, we were very surprised when they gave us hot towels when we arrived to clean our hands very well managed.

Incredible restaurant! You kind of have to look at little bit for this one because it is somewhat hidden away with a tiny little entrance. The food is great and the presentation incredible. Would definitely recommend to try this one.

This place is one of the busiest places I’ve been to in a long while! And it’s definitely worth it!! The service here is great and everyone is friendly, if you sit at the counters you can see what all the chefs are making too.
The food here is a little pricier than the typical Japanese restaurant but worth it because the quality is just that much better.
Prior warning: if you have more than 2 people and you don’t book, you will probably have to wait a while for a seat, cause when I went at 6pm on the dot with no booking all the seats were already booked (including most of the counter seats). In order to save yourself waiting call in and book beforehand!

Hard to find any faults ,stopped by 2 /5 /2018 at 9pm and made very welcome .Service very fast and food amazing .Worth the money but most importantly the presentation was the high light and would go again if only to see food display

I love the presentation of the food, the place was decorated really nicely and most importantly the food is really good and yummy👌🏼👌🏼👍🏼

Surprisingly good that I stumbled upon this nice little place. Well worth the money, great presentation and friendly service. Highly recommend this place. It's of a high quality but affordable

Came here a week ago for lunch. Must say i was very disappointed.
We ordered oyakodon, sashimi lunchbox, tempura lunchbox and tempura udon.
Oyakodon was salty and very eggy, renkon does much better oyakodons.
The lunchboxes were not like lunchboxes.. only rice and tempura, or rice and sashimi thats it. Bentos or lunchboxes should hav 2 or 3 diff items to give a bit of variety.
It made it hard to finish all the food.
Kyoya is spacious and conveniently located but they definitely need to work on putting a bit more effort into the lunch menu. Felt like we wasted money here and left with a sick stomache. Wish i had gone to renkon in takapuna instead.
The part i liked abt this place is that they giv u steamed towels to wipe ur hands before u start ur meals.

Service was fast and efficient
Got takeaway of dynamite roll which was absolutely delicious, heaps of filling and presented beautifully
Greeting as you walked in and made you feel very welcomed.
Sushi here is beautiful, clean and service is perfect.
There main good is always presented well.
You want a good and decent jap you have to visit here 😆

I enjoyed a dinner here with about 10 friends from work. Service was outstanding!!! We had an amazing welcome. I felt like I was on a holiday. I had the dinner set and was able to swap out the ice-cream with a side-salad with no issues, so great for the health conscious who enjoy going out. The food was beautifully plated with stunning presentation, and an amazing array of tasty things to try for the dinner set. Can't wait to go back and try other things on the menu and enjoy the little luxuries of their amazing service.

WOW. These guys are incredible! The food is mind blowing, from quality to colour, consistency and everything in between, I was more than impressed! The chefs in the kitchen are amazing, cooking under pressure right in front of you, they flow with each other so well, they are in sync and work so hard and consistently yet so peacefully, there is no stress and they're communication is so relaxed. This is hands down the best Japanese feast I have had yet. I will definitely be a regular. Thanks guys!

Excellent food and service. The food tastes great and is presented beautifully. The staff attentive. It's a busy place though, so make sure you book any night of the week!

Charming rustic interior, buzzing, happy atmosphere and really lovely food. The chefs present each plate beautifully. The little extras like the hot facecloths given to us before the meal were a nice touch. Very good value for money and we will be back soon.

This would have to be our favourite restaurant!! The food is consistently great! (we always have Kyo-Ya delight) And the service is always excellent!!
Stu
Great restaurant. Haven't been here in years, but recently visited and it hasn't changed. Really friendly staff and amazing food. I'll definitely go back before I leave New Zealand.

I like their Katsu Don. It comes with the right mix of runny eggs with marinated pork cutlets. Its lunch box is not bad either. Not the best Japanese restaurant, but not bad for being a convenient lunch place with free street parking (120 minutes) about 200m away.

Absolutely love this place. Have been here twice in the last few weeks and have had a great experience both times. The staff are lovely and the food is amazing and came out quickly. The presentation of the food is spectacular.

Great food, fast friendly service and always fresh. Last night we shared the that sting platter which consisted of a good selection of all the faves. Spinach, sushi, sashimi, teriyaki chicken & prawn & salmon tempura - great value for 2 people at $26. We also shared the fresh rice paper rolls which are delicious. This place has become our trusted regular go to Japanese restaurant.

I love going to this place for a quick lunch. Food is well presented and yummy. We have been here many times and have never had any issues. As a bonus - Lunch deal prices are reasonable too!

We have been to Kyo ya many times. Saturday night exhausted and hungry, we called at 8.50pm to see if they were open. The woman said yes till 10pm. We arrived at 8.55pm and was told upon arrival that they were closing and were not wanting anyone else to be seated. There were at least 15 other people eating. Was annoyed at being turned away and also being told that they were open till 10pm. We will not be returning.

However, we stumbled across a Japanese restaurant in Milford called Ten. They were closing but chose to open up and have us seated for dinner. Fantastic food, wonderful service. Thank you Kyo ya for turning us away, now we have a better Japanese Restaurant to dine at.

Very authentic Japanese food, beautifully presented and delicious. The only complaint I have is that you do really need to book. The restaurant isnt big but its very popular and fills up fast.
I was really impressed with the last visits here, however, The last time I visited the restaurant it was very busy on a Friday night, we waited an hour for our food. After all that time, I was presented with a plate of frozen, raw meat and ingredients and had to cook it myself on a small cooker... It didnt mention this on the menu! I will forgive because the rest of their menu is amazing, I will be back.. to order something else lol.

Great service as expected from a Japanese restaurant. Quite busy even after 8pm given the street is fairly quiet.

Best dish for the night is unexpectedly the tempura prawn! So juicy and definitely worth paying for.

Beef tataki I find it the meat was cut too thick and heavy handed on seasoning which over powered the beef flavour.

Over all it was not a bad local cosy Japanese restaurant.

I love this place. It isn't flashy in decor, it is quite Japanese traditional, lots of wood, but the food is great. The presentation and quality reminds me of the year I spent living in Tokyo.

Their lunch boxes are great value at $15. Try the sushi boat at dinner for a wow surprise.

good food when we went there for a simple family dinner. ordered a dinner box, a kids meal, and a sushi and sashimi set. service was slow somehow and i had to wave at the waiter/waitress a few times to get my green tea topped up. got in at 6.30pm and left after 8pm so it wasnt a quick meal. would recommend to make a reservation for a table or it gets full!

Went to last lunch for the two persons. The meals were divine – the sashimi n sushi was fresh, the flavours of our delight ,teriyaki chicken were outstanding, but the portions were to small for the money. Loved the presentation of the food. The service was good.
I think ,best Japanese restaurant on north shore.

A MUST-DINE if you are looking for authentic Japanese food in Taka.

By far the best Japanese restaurant for us. Our favourite is their Dinner Box (which consist of sushi, sashimi, tempura, deep fried chicken, rice, miso soup) and ice cream.

Food: 4.5/5
Service: 4/5
Price: 4/5
Presentation: 4.8/5

Dined here countless times now. Gotta say that Kyo-Ya is still our favourite.

Very disappointing! I booked through Internet, and called one hour before the booking time to confirm that I have a booking with them. They said yes. When I arrived they said they don't have my booking and can't give us a table when the restaurant is partially filled (perhaps 20% full). It is a Friday, so it cost me time to look for another place where we could dine.

This place is awesome! I would recommend that you head here if your wanting yummy, affordable, decent sized meals! Staff are lovely, food is great, and the atmosphere is lovely!

Id really give the place 4.5 stars if that was an option.
Lovely, authentic, interesting warm interior, (air con in summer), genuine empathy shown by staff (seemingly fresh off the plane from er, hopefully not Narita).
Food is generous, delicious, authentic, japanese owners and chef.
Be happy, dont worry!
Michelle
This is such a magnificent place! Had kyo ya dinner special and it was really amazing. Although the place is a bit crowded - should make booking all the time, I like this place. It's cozy and staff are really kind. The food is awesome! No matter what you order, you will be amazed.

Having lived in Japan for ten years, I thought the taste was very authentic, just like eating in Japan. The decor was very interesting, and it seemed a Japanese carpenter had set up the beams. The staff were friendly and I'd recommend Kyoya to anyone looking to try Japanese food made by a Japanese chef.

This is by far my favourite sushi restaurant in all of Auckland! The food is always amazing and made to order, very fresh sashimi, gorgeous presentation always, fantastic lunch box specials (even on Saturday!), and the staff could not be more lovely or attentive. I'm originally from Miami where you can get incredible sushi anywhere and until discovering Kyo ya, everything else in Auckland left me more than disappointed. Forget the takeaway rubbish, this is the real deal! It's been our local for 2 years now - never a disappointing bite.

I recently celebrated my 30th birthday at Kyo ya and they were such great hosts. There was about 10 of us and we ordered a tonne of food (everything was spot on) and probably far too much sake, but they happily kept it coming! ;) They also let my friends bring a cake for me and the staff took the home baked cake off the cardboard base and placed it onto a nice platter and even wrote out 'Happy Birthday' in chocolate sauce! This is just one example of how they go above and beyond what you'd expect. And of course at no extra charge.

The ambiance is great - very intimate and has a very traditional Japanese feel to it. Favourite place for a date night with the hubs or a fun night out with all the mates. They always greet you when you arrive and say goodbye when you leave. Other than the awesome food, probably my fav part is when you are seated, you are given a hot towel to clean your hands - I love this, you really feel like you're getting the royal treatment! How many other restaurants in Auckland do that? Ok, now I'm craving Kyo ya...might have to call in for dinner :)

Kyo Ya is our 'local' Japanese restaurant. We love Japanese food and have tried many (often more expensive) Japanese restaurants around Auckland. Our local is still our favourite.

Their Tasting Platter is fantastic - gives you the opportunity to try lots of things - all of which are tasty. I often ask to get this as a main (rather than an entree for two).

Another crowd-pleaser is the Sizzling Steak - it's great and very filling so don't order an entree.

Would highly recommend Kyo Ya. We took my father there and he was adamant he didn't like Japanese food... that was until he dined at Kyo Ya. Now he is a convert.
Jojo
Kyo Ya is our local Japanese restaurant and we've been dining there as a family for the past three years.

Our experience has always been positive. The surrounding are quite basic but the staff are always friendly, efficient and accommodating and it's usually busy and bustling with a good selection of locals and tourists filling the tables.

The food has always been fantastic. We often just choose the large mixed entree platter to share with the highlights being the marinated raw beef, deep fried Tofu and Prawn Tempura. Followed by the Sukiyaki, a selection of raw steak, veges and noodles that you cook yourself in a delicious sweet soya based soup. Often just these two dishes are enough for two although the temptation is to always order more.

Highly recommended!

The food is generally very good. However the English of the staff is not very good and this is quite frustrating. I asked for no seaweed in my sushi but just the rice. I had to ask three times for this and then they still got it wrong. They finally got it right but charged me extra for their mistake when I complained they would not change their mind and I had already handed over the cash before they told me of the extra charge. Will not return.

Lovely restaurant, nice appearance and very polite friendly staff. I had entree, main and shared a dessert and everything was excellent. The food arrived quickly and wasn't overpriced. Plenty of options for vegetarian and the food was all presented very nicely. Would definitely go back and it wasn't crazy busy like places in town which was good on a Thursday night and for a very tired pregnant girl. I thought it was cute how they all said goodbye when we left, even the chefs!

I took my Girlfriend and x2 Auntys for Dinner on the 11/02/2008. The weather was very humid so it was very refreshing to find they had Air Conditioning.

Particularly liked the Miso Soup and the ice cream.

We ordered 4 entrees. So couldn’t finish our mains..it is very filling so be careful. Allowed us to have a doggie bag so that was good.
And finally we brought a bottle of wine, but they didn't charge us corkage. Total bill $133 (not too bad for 4 people I thought.)

I like Kyo Ya. I have been eating here regularly for over 7 years since they first started and it has always been my best Japanese experience on the shore. The new owner has not let standards slip-if anything some dishes seem far more generous and interesting but he has put the prices up slighty. Hard to go wrong if you want fairly basic really fresh sushi and traditional Japanese.
Sarah
I came here for lunch with my father.
Had heard good things.
I ordered the chicken teriyaki.
Miso was too salty.
Teriykai was more like watered soy sauce.
Random cold potato salad was horrible.
My Dad ordered a lunch box, dry sushi, cam with some weird chicken dish that tasted like dolmio sauce but very bland.
Would not go here ever again.
Very Disappointed as i love Japanese food.
Ryan
