Review The Oxford - Timaru

Visited at lunchtime on Monday. Not many eateries were open on that day. Quiet and comfortable place. Fast service. Food was exceptional. We ordered a salad with squid and chicken schnitzel. Will certainly visit this place again when travelling through Timaru. Thank you!

Arrived without a reservation on Saturday night but seated in about 20 mins. I had the venison and it was fantastic! One of the best meals I have ever tasted! Carol had the prawn and salad entrees as a main and was similarly impressed. Highly recommend!

You are in Timaru and want the best food you had in ages? Then go to The Oxfort! Went there twice back to back for dinner and it was fantastic. Do not miss the desserts, especially Crème Brûlée. Everything we got was really tasty. If you can, make a reservation.

Enjoyed their brekkie options. We stopped by this place from on our way back to Christchurch. The place has very good charm and vibes and the service is excellent If you are a vegan(like me) or a vegetarian, ask them for vegan/veggie option. It's not advertised but they could customise it for your dietary requirements. That goes for people who don't take pork either

The food is okay, I guess it may have not just lived up to my expectations. Although the sole was delicious, the risotto with it was a bit bland. The staff were friendly. The room was a little cold. The beef smoores was very flavorful and enjoyable, but it came with a tiny amount of rice.

I was looking forward to our first visit to The Oxford after hearing good things. The food was good actually, but out of seven mains on the menu, three were unavailable. We had only been advised about one initially. Venison is understandable (and was swapped for duck) but it was surprising that pork belly and chicken were also not an option. The 'staff favourite' wine that we decided on had also run out. We also found we were ready to be seated at our dinner table, and to order, earlier than the waiting staff noticed, and we ended up asking both times. The staff were very friendly but we won't unfortunately be rushing back

We had a meal tonight (Saturday night) and there was a party of over 20. The service was brilliant, our waiter kept the drinks flowing and the tables tidy. He was awesome. The servers got our meal out within a reasonable timeframe and the food was absolutely delicious. That’s about the fourth visit, and can’t wait to go back. We come down from North Canterbury and go there every time. If I had to find a fault it would have to be the toilets. To get there you have to endure all the smokers...... but The Oxford will hopefully ban smokers or put them on the street so the smoke won’t waft in to restaurant each time the patrons use the toilets. All in all a wonderful evening made even more wonderful by very attentive staff and fabulous chefs. Thanks guys.

Amazing food, service & restaurant - definitely deserves a 5/5 :) after a long day of driving from Queenstown back to Timaru on Saturday, 14FEB15, we didn't yet have a dinner reservation organised for the night, with a recommendation for my BF's friends (locals) it was decided to try out The Oxford. From the moment we walked in, the staff were so welcoming & accommodating, especially since we didn't have a booking! We were guided to our table - very elegant decor throughout the restaurant & heart-shaped chocolates awaited for us on our napkins. The dinner menu looked very moreish – I couldn’t wait to order! My goodness what an excellent choice for dinner, from the moment our meals arrived, we knew, we were in for a special treat tonight – I had the Venison, served medium rare with roast portobello mushroom, beetroot, baby spinach salad, pomegranate & hazelnut dressing and my BF had the Grilled Ribeye, with roast potatoes, onions, green beans, crisp fried egg, steak sauce – our meals were superbly delicious; I swear I could of had another serving of my meal, as it was the best venison dish I’ve ever eaten in my life! Dessert to share, was the Pavlova with fresh strawberries & cream (no kiwi fruit, as I already had my sweet Kiwi man sitting next to me). It was delicious too, no debates won on who first invented the Pavlova – the Aussies or the Kiwis. Sadly that night, I didn’t take any photos our my meals (yes, I’m one of those people that take food pictures), I wish I did, so I could’ve upload them to this review, but as it was a romantic night, the iphone stayed hidden in the handbag. Overall, I was so glad we went to The Oxford for Valentine's Day dinner - my BF & I had such a lovely time together - looking forward to going there again & again next time we are back in Timaru :) Thank-you for a wonderful night!

Stumbled on this wee gem whilst passing through Timaru. Wow, concise yet interesting dinner menu that is modestly priced considering the high quality of meals. Excellent wine list. Attentive, knowledgeable waiting staff. Yes, I'd strongly recommend and definitely go back.

The Oxford is a beautiful contemporary restaurant serving stunning regional & seasonal cuisine in the heart of little Timaru. The Oxford has created this stylish & friendly local restaurant serving irresistible regional dishes with a distinctive light & contemporary touch. Using only the freshest, carefully sourced ingredients, the chefs menu is uniquely inviting & delicious, with dishes including freshly made delicately prepared fish and heartier meat dishes. With a light & airy décor, semi-private spaces for entertaining, there's something for everyday and every special occasion – the perfect neighbourhood restaurant.

We just went there for a work Breakfast with a table of 20+, they opened early especially for us, remembered our names as to place the plates for us and even more important all the meals came out at once. Extremely happy with the service and cannot thank them enough!

I had a night out with girlfriends this week. The meal was amazing - pork belly and cheesecake for dessert were perfection. As usual the service couldn't be faulted either. Well done The Oxford. Always my favourite.

I asked for medium ribeye which was served very clearly well done. A bit disappointing for somewhere that came so highly recommended. Still tasted ok.
