Review Fig Tree Cafe Upper Hutt - Upper Hutt

We stopped in for a coffee while out on a walk. It was a busy Saturday morning, but there were still plenty of tables available. The food menu looked fantastic, and we'll come back on another visit for breakfast or brunch. The coffee was good, and my tasty cheese scone came with plenty of butter (bonus points for that). Their smoothies were also delicious. We'd definitely recommend this eatery.

Enjoyed breakfast at Fig Tree Cafe this morning with my husband. Great staff, excellent service. A converted church houses this cafe. Very busy this morning, which is testament to the great food, atmosphere and vibes.

The fig tree is hands down one of my top brunch spots. The staff are incredibly helpful and efficient - especially during the busy peaks. Food is 10/10, we always get a mix off the menu, cabinet food and specials on the board and they’ve never missed the mark! Super affordable for the portion size. A consistent highlight would be the lamb sausage roll from the cabinet! It’s rare to find sausage rolls that aren’t pork mince and these guys do it so well. Best spot in Trentham!!

Really good cafe in Trentham with excellent food and service. There’s always a great selection of counter food to go with the menu. It gets very noisy inside when the cafe is busy but the atmosphere is funky and inviting.

Being one of the Popular cafe in UH gets busy during peak hours. But one of the best coffee's that you can count on any day. Have been visiting this Cafe often and never have been dissapointed on the coffee, service and food.

This cafe was a great find! Food and coffee were very good. Loved the cheese scone, and raspberry and white chocolate muffin

Solid cafe in Upper Hutt and is very consistent with their quality. Really enjoyed their soup of the day. Only $14.50 for soup of the day which was packed with chicken, beans, veg and two large slices of sour dough. It was our second time getting the frittata from their cabinet and it was the exact same despite it being over a year since we bought it last. Was really impressed by that consistency. Coffee and cake was also great, the cake was surprisingly not too sweet unlike most other cafes in Upper Hutt which tend to go for a sweeter richer cake that I’m not a fan of.

We had breakfast here twice already. The food is delightful and they have generous servings. The place itself is lovely and the staff are kind and accomodating. Looking forward to our next breakfast family date here!

Had lunch here yesterday. The best staff. So welcoming and looked got a free table for us. I would highly recommend, food was great too.. Great quirky building. Thank you for welcoming us. I will happily come back..

Brunch was delicious on Saturday at Fig Tree. The out door area is a little disturbed by the road traffic but the delicious food and sun made up for that. There is always plenty of choice here for those with dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. The lemon and passion fruit slice was just the right mixture of tart and sweet. Plus the gluten free base of the slice was moist and buttery. Perfect!

My daughter has Coeliac Disease and the wonderful staff at the Fig Tree looked after her so well! The food was divine; I can’t recommend it enough, especially to those with special food needs.

Absolute fave coffee place. Always do an excellent coffee and customer service is great. Arrived a bit early today and they hadn't quite opened but one of the staff saw me and made a coffee even though they really didn't have to. Much appreciated as I was about to start a long drive and really needed the coffee fix!

Lovely atmosphere, great place, great range of delicious food, caters for all and for those with food allergies. Staff are warm and professional, the place to go. Had a great time thanks Christine and staff.

This is mine and my partners fave cafe in Upper Hutt!!! It is quickly becoming our local every weekend! Not often do you find a place that has delicious coffee, cakes, menu food and cabinet food - BUT the Fig Tree has it all! We are obsessed 😍

Don't know why people rave about this café --yes nice setting --but food always a disappointment==went there last week --Paid $8.00 for mini bacon and egg quiche --which was inedible really --pastry had been heated many times was horrible --filling a bit of hard boiled egg -and little bit of dried up bacon -Cant see why people think this place is so wonderful

I have been meaning to write on this cafe's page for ages. We held a party here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary back in September and everything about our day went so well. Huge thank you to the friendly and helpful staff, you were all amazing. There was a rather large number of us but if it put the staff under pressure, you never showed it. The food and coffee was great too. Thanks a whole bunch.

This is the 3rd time I have visited here and the 3rd time I have had to return the lime thick shake. This time I asked for my money back. Milkshake was as thin as water yet again and had no taste. I can understand them getting it wrong once and being pulled up on it but 3 times. Not good. Sorry won't be giving them a 4th try

Went to this cafe and had ice coffee spilt all over my mum her phone, and half over me, yes apology was given but that was all, we were just left there wondering how long it would be till our new ones where made it took awhile, my kids had finished their drinks by this time,I now have a coffee stained dress , very upsetting experience. I will not be returning as the situation wasn't handled very well.

Great coffee and food and get to go with my 2 year old so they have lots of toys to play with

Shame the little lady wrote a C for corn fritters I ordered for my elderly mother and I on Saturday. We received crepes!!! No offer of replacing but apologised to Mum. It was my birthday and I went away very disappointed.I won't be going back in a hurry as the Garage down the road do great corn fritters.

Once again the Fig Tree had exceptional service. Was told at the beginning there was a delay as they were busy. Wasn't a problem. Definitely have to book.

The food was absolutely wonderful and staff treated us very well

Usually love this cafe and a good option in upperhutt to visit but was quite disappointed with my recent visit ordered a dairy free ‘vegan muffin’ which ended up having yogurt all over it ... also ordered a vanilla latte and so much vanilla was used I couldn’t even drink my coffee 😅 so was rather disappointed

Arrived today at 1pm to a busy cafe. No table service and had to order our meals at the cashier. We ordered cabinet food which was dressed on a plate with a small salad, the sandwhich was tasty and the vegetable lasagna was good. The board menu looked really nice and I'm looking forward to trying out the big breakfast which I've heard is quite good from friends/relatives. Service was good. Below photos of the two cabinet items and two coke zeros (glass bottles) totalled $33 (which I thought was a little pricey).<br/><br/>Edit: Went again for mothers day and the 8 of us had the big breakfast, French toast and eggs bene. Eggs were a little disappointing as they were all hard poached. Annoying to have no table service when they are busy and there were 8 of us. Good for small groups as you will have to each go up and order your food one by one and pay ahead. I wouldn't recommend going here if you're a large group.

Unless your about to bite your arm off I would not recommend eating here I waited for warm milk with a slight coffee taste, the food was dry, over cooked and expensive, the atmosphere was very edgy as the kitchen manager was yelling at her staff and barking insults with out any care for the customers. Definitely wont be coming back.

Fig Tree is set inside an old church with wide double doors. There's an assortment of wider tables and tables just for two. The kitchen is set up a little awkwardly at the back in an almost open plan layout, but the presentation of the front counter and cabinets and chalkboard menus are nice. A friendly sparrow made its way inside and nibbled at crumbs on the floor. When eventually spotted by staff it was simply ushered out.<br/><br/>On Sunday afternoon it was packed but not completely full. We got in before the church on the corner finished their service. No one was sitting outside because of the cold.<br/><br/>I ordered the Fig Tree Big Breakfast Plate with poached eggs, Turkish bread, bacon, hash browns, chorizo, mushrooms, and tomatoes. I gave my veges to my partner and I still couldn't finish the plate. It really is a big breakfast. The bacon was crispy and the hash browns were delicious. The chorizo was alright but overly bland. Unfortunately the poached eggs were overdone and only a little yolk came out. Which in turn made everything rather dry with no yolk to dip into.<br/><br/>I also ordered a real chocolate mocha, which once you dip in the Whittakers dark chocolate Sante Bar, really is some chocolatey goodness. I didn't even use the marshmallows.<br/><br/>Overall, really good atmosphere and drinks, and the food was "almost" perfect.<br/><br/><br/>

Fig Tree Cafe is a wonderful place! Coffee was spot on and the chicken filo pastry was fab. The best part is that the cafe is now in a refurbished church. Just a little reminder that God has blessed us with the gift of coffee!<br/>

Phoarrrrr the prices!!!! There is a chance I'll never eat a meal here unless someone rich is paying. Was quite keen on afilled croissant but the $12 fee put me offa TAD...... most of the clientele look older, so probably a good place to take mum & dad. Coffee was amazing the last time I was here but tastes different now...

Never disappoints. Friendly staff, great selection of food in the cabinet or all day breakfast. Laid back decor and quick turnaround. Flexible with the dishes, we asked to replace a couple of items on the big breakfast and no fuss at all.

Was a quick lunch stop with my 2 elderly parents. <br/><br/>Parking is easy and good choice of sitting in the main seating area, a little side room or outside at the front (road side). Lovely to have all the artwork up but needs a wee refresh from a decor perspective. 2 bathrooms which were clean and bright. <br/><br/>Good selection of food. Prices are a bit on the expensive side though all the food was delicious and tasty. <br/><br/>The Asian noodle salad had flavour and a generous serving. My dad had had vege pie and he inhaled it whilst I had the vege lasagna (didn't like the sour cream bring followed in top but otherwise tasty). <br/><br/>The coffee and tea were slow to come out and no white sugar on the table for tea drinkers and no teaspoons on our cups. If we had time we would of asked for some hot water for the tea but today was 1 cup each only. <br/><br/>Mum had a date caramel scone and delighted in the size and taste. It was really delicious. I ordered the brownie, a let down as it was dry and need lash ion of cream to make it palatable. <br/><br/>I was really impressed with the service when we ordered as I couldn't make up my mind as to whether I would have the roasted salad and was offered some to try. Was totally impressed when we followed up on my dads order for the manager to say " oh sorry I did not get that" but promptly brought it out without a fuss or an additional charge. <br/><br/>Would return and possibly with the kids as I noted a dedicated kids area.

My favourite cafe of all time. Although it's located in the suburb of Upper Hutt it's always busy but thankful it's not in Wellington so I can at least get a table. The food here never disappoints and is always so delicious and they have the best ice chocolate around. Their sweets cabinet is amazing too. Highly recommend this. =)

“Thou God seest thee” is difficult to ignore written high above the counter. The prospect of surveillance however did not alter our choice – Louise cake, a trim cap and a cup of tea.<br/><br/>This converted church still retains much of its churchy feel – high ceilings, stained glass, the familiar spaces peculiar to the needs of congregations. The pews have gone and the altar now replaced by counter with cabinets that have possibly seen days in a haberdasher’s shops.<br/><br/>The food looked good, the 2 large cabinets contained a range of slices, filled rolls and one of my personal favoutites – a ramekin of golden crusted macaroni cheese.. The service was excellent, and as the day was sunny we sat outside next to the portable fig leaf truck. The lady brought water for our hounds and it was all very pleasant, in a secular way.<br/><br/>As far as tea went (this was my 23rd café I’d gone to in search of a good cup of tea), The range of teas was good and included several green teas as well as the standards – EBT, Early Grey and flavoured teas. I ordered the EBT, I wasnt asked about milk,. The tea came in a stainless steel tea pot, a loose leaf put into a long satchet. The cup was cold but bone china. It poured a good colour, good astringency / body. There were tins of t-Leaf tea out the back, as well as a packet of twining tea bag EBT. But in the tea pot was one of the hand filled satchets that they had sitting next to the Twining. The tea didn’t have the citrusy flavor I associate with the t-Leaf tea but it wasn’t a tea bag, so I’m not sure what it was. It was good.<br/><br/>Also bought a Louise Cake – not good, far too thick on the shortcake layer – I ended up horizontally slicing half of the shortcake off.<br/><br/>A date aand caramel scone was dense with a very hot caramel running over the top – very good. Butter came as curls rather than those dreadful plastic packets.<br/><br/>The coffee: Very good<br/><br/>For the tea, I scored it 18/30 - very good, and, of 23 cafes, third equal with "The little tea shop" in Kilbirnie (Tea-total - loose leaf) and just behind Louis sergeant (?Harney's - loose leaf) and Clark's in the library (Tea total - Loose leaf), both on 19/30.

We stopped here for a quick coffee on a cold Saturday morning since my partner thought I might like to see the inside. An old church converted into a cafe! We didn't stop for long but the counter food looked good, especially the cinnamon muffins. We got our coffee from the cart outside which was a faster option. There was no complaining about the taste from me.

The last time I went here was in 2002 or 2003 and the experience was tainted by a kid with ADHD  running around annoying customers. Today my experience (alone) was nothing short of awesome. The place is a revamped church with pleasant decor and purchasable art on the walls, very friendly staff, and a great range of cabinet food. I felt like something sweet so ordered the crepes with bacon, fruit and maple syrup, and a pot of tea. My tea arrived right away but there was a bit of a wait on my meal (hence the point 4 rating). It was worth it though, because what was placed in front of me (as pictured) was nothing short of art! The picture doesn't really do it justice, but it had the makings of a modern corporate sculpture. Three large crepes with banana, grapes, mango, Chinese gooseberry, pineapple, orange & bacon served with a jug of maple syrup. It was as delicious as it looks and I cannot fault it. From what I saw of other patrons' meals, I will be going back to try everything else.<br/><br/>2nd visit a week later - Took the hubby back. I had the breakfast plate (mixed grill) & the hubby had the eggs benny. No complaints! One thing though, I don't understand why people come in just for takeaway coffee when there is a takeaway coffee trailer outside.<br/><br/>3rd visit a further week later - I had the crepes again ... divine! Hubby had the chicken & broccoli pie. Awesome except it wasn't hot enough. We waited over 30 minutes. I am sure it only takes seconds to microwave pastry so we are not sure why the wait time is so long. The place is never packed to capacity. My only issue is the teapots are disproportionate to the cups so I have to always ask for extra hot water ... if I can get in fast enough before the wait staff run away!<br/><br/>Here's what the hubby had to say about visit 3 ...<br/><br/>"I note they got an award in 2008. Maybe we should have come then. Orders were placed for crepes and a chicken & broccoli pie and fries with garlic mayo. I didn't have the fries as they advised they didn't have any garlic mayo. We grabbed a seat and waited. And waited, watching other people come and go, and wait too long for takeaway coffee. In saying that the young lady making the coffees was going flat out, so the problem seemed to be resourcing and it certainly wasn't her. When our orders were placed the inside of the cafe was bereft of people, so there's no excuse for waiting 30mins for our food, and even less excuse for the pie I received being blood-warm. It didn't get enough heat to soften the cream sauce inside, so whilst I got some idea of the flavour, there was little joy in eating it. I considered mentioning this, but didn't want to wait in the queue. We ate. We left."

This cafe is now my regular, great coffee, service with a smile and muffins that are exploding with yummy fillings! Would recommend to anyone, only downside is I feel that the meals are a bit on the expensive side however wont stop me going back.

One word "SLOW" please do visit here if you are very hungry or on the fly! the food is nice.....but I'm not sure it's worth the wait. The staff seem very dis-organised.....overall a bit disappointing.

Come on guys - hopefully you read this. Sort your coffee out it is very luke warm and certainly not up to your usual standard and takes so long to arrive at the table. The coffee maker should not be the runner - it takes toooo long. We had finished the muffin before the coffee arrived - and they were not busy

My Second Visit:<br/><br/>Deciding that the Fig Tree Cafe deserved a second chance, I visited them again today. I am delighted to report that my experience there today was great!<br/><br/>Coffee was served very promptly and made to a fantastic standard. The basic chicken fougasse was also served in good time, fully heated and fresh. <br/><br/>An overall great experience. Based on an aggregate score for both experiences, I am happy to give the Fig Tree Cafe a 3.5-star rating!<br/><br/> <br/>My First Visit:<br/><br/>A highly mediocre experience, with poor food and substandard coffee.<br/><br/>My chicken and pumpkin panini/sandwich was served partly warmed and partly cold. This is a strict no-no, given the risk of campylobacter in the chicken that would probably have been sitting on the counter for a few hours.<br/><br/>The service was rather slow as well, taking up to 12 minutes for the panini to be heated up to me and delivered.<br/><br/>The Fig Tree Cafe is certainly not anywhere near my list of top cafes.

I would travel for miles to get the Famous Broccoli &amp; smoked chicken pie, it quite often sells out as it is so popular and when I miss out I find it hard to make another choice lol although I have sampled most items on the menu yummy. All the foods is tasty, hot and like grandma used to make, the old fashioned way and that is a compliment. The staff are very helpful and when I take my friends and family they are usually impressed. My twin 8 year ODs love the cheese scones and the kids toasted sandwiches which are really open cibatta toasties with ham and cheese yummy. Great milkshakes for the kids too and the little lunch pats are very handy. Love the coffee and service, that's why we go back all the time, cheers

Since moving to the area, I regularly stop by here for a coffee (always delicious) and croissant sandwich out of the cabinet. While there have been a few misses (their Chef's Chocolate Cake is awful, got home another time to find they'd sent me with the wrong order, lost my coffee order), the service has generally been good enough to warrant my coming back regularly. <br/><br/>Then we brought our children here for brunch the Sunday before Christmas. Neither of my children tend to be big eaters so I asked if they had a child's menu -fairly de rigueur for any cafe. The answer was no. So I asked if they could simply do a half portion of the crepes with fruit for my 8 year old. <br/><br/>The answer was literally stunning. Yes, they could but they'd still have to charge full price as it requires the same amount of ingredient and effort from the chef.<br/><br/>Come again? This is when I mention that I'm a chef. I have no problem with cafe policy, but I have a serious problem when they try to b.s. me as the customer (all of which I pointed out). It most certainly does not take the same time or ingredient to make a half order of crepes.<br/><br/>So I ordered my daughter the full crepes and everyone else ordered. Kid behind the counter again offered to half the crepes for full price and I again say I'm not paying them nearly $20 for half the portion. I pay for our full order and go find a table.<br/><br/>This is when they finally try to make it right and offer something resembling customer service (which was did I want to split a full order of crepes between the two kids instead of them eating different things), but I was done and having none of it. I just preferred to be left alone so my family could enjoy their food. <br/><br/>My advice to the owners/managers is to take the time to train your staff to not make the assumption that your customers are stupid. And if you want to keep said customers, you might want to consider providing better service so we keep coming back. Your prices are higher than what I'd pay in the CBD, Cuba St or in Auckland but your costs are not. Justify said costs with better than average customer service.<br/><br/>I regularly make items that aren't on my menu for children to make mom and dad happy. Why? Because I'd like mom and dad to keep spending their money with me. Your lack of thinking outside the box has probably lost you this mom and her disposable income.

My wife and I moved to Upper Hutt a few months back and tend to go out for brunch about once a fortnight. We've made a point of trying most of the cafes around Upper Hutt and have been generally impressed with the standard. Fig tree didn't quite meet our expectations.<br/><br/>When we arrived we were impressed with the presentation of the cabinet food. My wife ordered the macaroni cheese out of the cabinet and I ordered the cooked breakfast along with a cappucino. The coffee was well done and the breakfast was reasonable without being particularly exciting. It lacked some of the contents that other cafes offer, such as no hash brown or tomato.<br/><br/>My wife's macaroni cheese was very bland (just macaroni and cheese, without any chopped ham, onion of spices in it) and pretty dissapointing. The iced chocolate she had was well presented and tasty though.<br/><br/>All in all, it wasn't a bad experience but a little overpriced and underwhelming compared to other cafe's around.
Pip Graham
I used to love visiting Fig Tree but the food has taken a serious downward turn. I don't know if there are new chefs but it's rare to get food which is warm or terribly appetising. Such a shame!

Stopped by this cafe early-ish on a Sunday morning for a coffee and a bite. Coffee was fantastic, staff was friendly and love that its in an old church! The decor is kind of grandmother gone hipster and very cool. The boyfriend had a full breakfast and said his scrambled eggs were perfection. I couldn't get past the salmon sandwich in the cabinet and it was as good as it looked. Wish I'd had time to get something sweet from the cabinet. There was a chocolate cake that looked AMAZING. Will definitely be back next time I'm in the area!

Absolutely divine food as always! My friend and I catch up for a good 4 hours every few months and the food, coffee and service is always fantastic.<br/><br/>I highly recommend this cafe, it takes 10 minutes to work out what you are going to eat as all the food is just beautiful.

I had a pre-ordered lunch and it was great. It was not much of the waiting, and the food was nice and service was superb. The only fault that my iced coffee came after my friend has finished his lunch and his coffee and were half way through my meals.

The Figgy is my favourite cafe in the world, it's the place I share with dear friends and family, to celebrate special events and to commiserate over lifes hardships. <br/>The Chicken and Brocolli pie is to die for, and for a time smooths out the bumps in life's road.<br/>Mothers Day is coming up family if you're reading this!!

Went in for lunch with a friend (The Fig Tree is always a safe bet to take visitors) and as I have done every other time I had the vegetarian Rifleman pie. It is just excellent. <br/>Unfortunately my friend had the crepes, which were on the burnt side, with bacon also on the burnt side and completely drowning in maple syrup, after debating what to do we decided that a cafe this popular (we had to share a table as all the others were taken!) is popular for a reason, and that they would want to know if a customer was unhappy with their meal. <br/>Sure enough when we explained the situation to the manager, she said she was happy to remake or replace the meal, my friend went for the replace option and had a lovely vegetarian quiche. <br/>They took what could have been a disappointing experience and turned it around. <br/>Other cafes could learn something from the continuing success of this cafe.<br/>I will definitely be back for my Rifleman Pie.

My partner and I take lunch at the Fig Tree Cafe in Trentham at least twice a month. The food is always fresh and delicious, the coffee is not bad, and the service (considering the place is nearly always full at midday) is more than acceptable. I recommend the Chicken and Brocolli pie, its very very good.
