My daughter has Coeliac Disease and the wonderful staff at the Fig Tree looked after her so well! The food was divine; I can’t recommend it enough, especially to those with special food needs.

Absolute fave coffee place. Always do an excellent coffee and customer service is great. Arrived a bit early today and they hadn't quite opened but one of the staff saw me and made a coffee even though they really didn't have to. Much appreciated as I was about to start a long drive and really needed the coffee fix!

Fig Tree is set inside an old church with wide double doors. There's an assortment of wider tables and tables just for two. The kitchen is set up a little awkwardly at the back in an almost open plan layout, but the presentation of the front counter and cabinets and chalkboard menus are nice. A friendly sparrow made its way inside and nibbled at crumbs on the floor. When eventually spotted by staff it was simply ushered out.

On Sunday afternoon it was packed but not completely full. We got in before the church on the corner finished their service. No one was sitting outside because of the cold.

I ordered the Fig Tree Big Breakfast Plate with poached eggs, Turkish bread, bacon, hash browns, chorizo, mushrooms, and tomatoes. I gave my veges to my partner and I still couldn't finish the plate. It really is a big breakfast. The bacon was crispy and the hash browns were delicious. The chorizo was alright but overly bland. Unfortunately the poached eggs were overdone and only a little yolk came out. Which in turn made everything rather dry with no yolk to dip into.

I also ordered a real chocolate mocha, which once you dip in the Whittakers dark chocolate Sante Bar, really is some chocolatey goodness. I didn't even use the marshmallows.

Overall, really good atmosphere and drinks, and the food was "almost" perfect.

Fig Tree Cafe is a wonderful place! Coffee was spot on and the chicken filo pastry was fab. The best part is that the cafe is now in a refurbished church. Just a little reminder that God has blessed us with the gift of coffee!

Never disappoints. Friendly staff, great selection of food in the cabinet or all day breakfast. Laid back decor and quick turnaround. Flexible with the dishes, we asked to replace a couple of items on the big breakfast and no fuss at all.

My favourite cafe of all time. Although it's located in the suburb of Upper Hutt it's always busy but thankful it's not in Wellington so I can at least get a table. The food here never disappoints and is always so delicious and they have the best ice chocolate around. Their sweets cabinet is amazing too. Highly recommend this. =)

“Thou God seest thee” is difficult to ignore written high above the counter. The prospect of surveillance however did not alter our choice – Louise cake, a trim cap and a cup of tea.

This converted church still retains much of its churchy feel – high ceilings, stained glass, the familiar spaces peculiar to the needs of congregations. The pews have gone and the altar now replaced by counter with cabinets that have possibly seen days in a haberdasher’s shops.

The food looked good, the 2 large cabinets contained a range of slices, filled rolls and one of my personal favoutites – a ramekin of golden crusted macaroni cheese.. The service was excellent, and as the day was sunny we sat outside next to the portable fig leaf truck. The lady brought water for our hounds and it was all very pleasant, in a secular way.

As far as tea went (this was my 23rd café I’d gone to in search of a good cup of tea), The range of teas was good and included several green teas as well as the standards – EBT, Early Grey and flavoured teas. I ordered the EBT, I wasnt asked about milk,. The tea came in a stainless steel tea pot, a loose leaf put into a long satchet. The cup was cold but bone china. It poured a good colour, good astringency / body. There were tins of t-Leaf tea out the back, as well as a packet of twining tea bag EBT. But in the tea pot was one of the hand filled satchets that they had sitting next to the Twining. The tea didn’t have the citrusy flavor I associate with the t-Leaf tea but it wasn’t a tea bag, so I’m not sure what it was. It was good.

Also bought a Louise Cake – not good, far too thick on the shortcake layer – I ended up horizontally slicing half of the shortcake off.

A date aand caramel scone was dense with a very hot caramel running over the top – very good. Butter came as curls rather than those dreadful plastic packets.

The coffee: Very good

For the tea, I scored it 18/30 - very good, and, of 23 cafes, third equal with "The little tea shop" in Kilbirnie (Tea-total - loose leaf) and just behind Louis sergeant (?Harney's - loose leaf) and Clark's in the library (Tea total - Loose leaf), both on 19/30.

We stopped here for a quick coffee on a cold Saturday morning since my partner thought I might like to see the inside. An old church converted into a cafe! We didn't stop for long but the counter food looked good, especially the cinnamon muffins. We got our coffee from the cart outside which was a faster option. There was no complaining about the taste from me.

The last time I went here was in 2002 or 2003 and the experience was tainted by a kid with ADHD  running around annoying customers. Today my experience (alone) was nothing short of awesome. The place is a revamped church with pleasant decor and purchasable art on the walls, very friendly staff, and a great range of cabinet food. I felt like something sweet so ordered the crepes with bacon, fruit and maple syrup, and a pot of tea. My tea arrived right away but there was a bit of a wait on my meal (hence the point 4 rating). It was worth it though, because what was placed in front of me (as pictured) was nothing short of art! The picture doesn't really do it justice, but it had the makings of a modern corporate sculpture. Three large crepes with banana, grapes, mango, Chinese gooseberry, pineapple, orange & bacon served with a jug of maple syrup. It was as delicious as it looks and I cannot fault it. From what I saw of other patrons' meals, I will be going back to try everything else.

2nd visit a week later - Took the hubby back. I had the breakfast plate (mixed grill) & the hubby had the eggs benny. No complaints! One thing though, I don't understand why people come in just for takeaway coffee when there is a takeaway coffee trailer outside.

3rd visit a further week later - I had the crepes again ... divine! Hubby had the chicken & broccoli pie. Awesome except it wasn't hot enough. We waited over 30 minutes. I am sure it only takes seconds to microwave pastry so we are not sure why the wait time is so long. The place is never packed to capacity. My only issue is the teapots are disproportionate to the cups so I have to always ask for extra hot water ... if I can get in fast enough before the wait staff run away!

Here's what the hubby had to say about visit 3 ...

"I note they got an award in 2008. Maybe we should have come then. Orders were placed for crepes and a chicken & broccoli pie and fries with garlic mayo. I didn't have the fries as they advised they didn't have any garlic mayo. We grabbed a seat and waited. And waited, watching other people come and go, and wait too long for takeaway coffee. In saying that the young lady making the coffees was going flat out, so the problem seemed to be resourcing and it certainly wasn't her. When our orders were placed the inside of the cafe was bereft of people, so there's no excuse for waiting 30mins for our food, and even less excuse for the pie I received being blood-warm. It didn't get enough heat to soften the cream sauce inside, so whilst I got some idea of the flavour, there was little joy in eating it. I considered mentioning this, but didn't want to wait in the queue. We ate. We left."

This cafe is now my regular, great coffee, service with a smile and muffins that are exploding with yummy fillings! Would recommend to anyone, only downside is I feel that the meals are a bit on the expensive side however wont stop me going back.

I would travel for miles to get the Famous Broccoli & smoked chicken pie, it quite often sells out as it is so popular and when I miss out I find it hard to make another choice lol although I have sampled most items on the menu yummy. All the foods is tasty, hot and like grandma used to make, the old fashioned way and that is a compliment. The staff are very helpful and when I take my friends and family they are usually impressed. My twin 8 year ODs love the cheese scones and the kids toasted sandwiches which are really open cibatta toasties with ham and cheese yummy. Great milkshakes for the kids too and the little lunch pats are very handy. Love the coffee and service, that's why we go back all the time, cheers

Stopped by this cafe early-ish on a Sunday morning for a coffee and a bite. Coffee was fantastic, staff was friendly and love that its in an old church! The decor is kind of grandmother gone hipster and very cool. The boyfriend had a full breakfast and said his scrambled eggs were perfection. I couldn't get past the salmon sandwich in the cabinet and it was as good as it looked. Wish I'd had time to get something sweet from the cabinet. There was a chocolate cake that looked AMAZING. Will definitely be back next time I'm in the area!

We stopped in for a coffee while out on a walk. It was a busy Saturday morning, but there were still plenty of tables available. The food menu looked fantastic, and we'll come back on another visit for breakfast or brunch. The coffee was good, and my tasty cheese scone came with plenty of butter (bonus points for that). Their smoothies were also delicious. We'd definitely recommend this eatery.

Enjoyed breakfast at Fig Tree Cafe this morning with my husband. Great staff, excellent service. A converted church houses this cafe. Very busy this morning, which is testament to the great food, atmosphere and vibes.

The fig tree is hands down one of my top brunch spots. The staff are incredibly helpful and efficient - especially during the busy peaks. Food is 10/10, we always get a mix off the menu, cabinet food and specials on the board and they’ve never missed the mark! Super affordable for the portion size. A consistent highlight would be the lamb sausage roll from the cabinet! It’s rare to find sausage rolls that aren’t pork mince and these guys do it so well. Best spot in Trentham!!

Really good cafe in Trentham with excellent food and service. There’s always a great selection of counter food to go with the menu. It gets very noisy inside when the cafe is busy but the atmosphere is funky and inviting.

Being one of the Popular cafe in UH gets busy during peak hours. But one of the best coffee's that you can count on any day. Have been visiting this Cafe often and never have been dissapointed on the coffee, service and food.

Solid cafe in Upper Hutt and is very consistent with their quality. Really enjoyed their soup of the day. Only $14.50 for soup of the day which was packed with chicken, beans, veg and two large slices of sour dough. It was our second time getting the frittata from their cabinet and it was the exact same despite it being over a year since we bought it last. Was really impressed by that consistency. Coffee and cake was also great, the cake was surprisingly not too sweet unlike most other cafes in Upper Hutt which tend to go for a sweeter richer cake that I’m not a fan of.

Brunch was delicious on Saturday at Fig Tree. The out door area is a little disturbed by the road traffic but the delicious food and sun made up for that. There is always plenty of choice here for those with dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. The lemon and passion fruit slice was just the right mixture of tart and sweet. Plus the gluten free base of the slice was moist and buttery. Perfect!
