Review Gerrys - Upper Hutt

Loved it.always seem to have little extra in my orders.and the best thing is the difference of the way the food is cooked shows immensely in the smell and taste. So much filling than mackers n KFC Etc...on the broke and alone times I always grab a gravy to mix with meal.. Yummyyyyyyy

I would give 5 stars if it was a few months ago. Chicken recently is overcooked or burnt. Hope owner can pay more attention to quality too. Roast vegetables are still quite nice. Edited on 1/Oct/2022 Revisited recently, chips are still really awesome. Chicken is nicely cooked as well.

Haven't been here in a few years. Prices have increased by a few dollars or more. Portion sizes seem a bit smaller than what they once were as well. Food was tasty but cold chips.

Very friendly staff. Place was clean. Chicken was moist and chips were crunchy and perfectly cooked. Desserts were amazing especially the banana cake chocolate mousse. Good price for very good dinner.

The lady that served me was friendly. I went for the 1/2 chicken and chips. It was great bang for your buck. I probably should have gone for the 1/4 chicken. The chips are on point with great seasoning. Gravy is simple but banging. The atmosphere was interesting - you feel like your in a diner on Route 66 in the US of A. They have a nice brick wall that should put a photo of the man, the myth the legend - Gerry!

Great for the whole family. Best value for money I've come across. Not only is it on you're way but itself is an awesome destination. I'd come back for the roast potatoes alone.

I don't normally eat chicken wings or legs....I just eat the breast...but omg I totally could have licked the bones clean. Absolutely the best chicken I've ever had. Seriously. Gravy was beautiful and the potatoes crunch and with a lot of flavor. Totally recommend

This place is absolutely amazing! I have never had chicken that has tasted this good in NZ. Well worth the drive to get here. Can't describe how much I enjoyed my meal. Service was phenomenal as well.

Hi Great Chicken,Fries etc If phone order still allow for 5 to 10mins wait on collection as staff gather it together when you arrive i suppose so its hot served, incase youre in a hurry to go somewhere..

Gerry’s Charcoal was amazingly tasty. Best charcoal chicken and best chips in Upper Hutt. The order was fast and the 1/2 chicken chips was perfect.

I love this place so much, chips are outstanding and I love seeing happy young faces in the kitchen, nowadays kids just moan off all day in there room🤣 and reading these reviews seeing people complain about the wait and atmosphere. Have you guys never been to a busy place with lots of customers with maybe like 5max staff members on

Roast chicken is so tasty and juicy.

To say Gerry's Charcoal Chicken is finger licking good may be cliché but it is so true. I couldn't stop eating it. I had planned to save some for lunch the next day, but nope, it was all gone in a flash. Really yummy! Our servers were lovely, efficient and really cool.

Amazing. Food was incredible, unexpectedly delicious. Price was probably the best value you can get these days. Service was perfect, staff were very helpful.

Best chicken I've ever had. Flavourful, crispy and still moist and tender. Beautiful well seasoned chips and home made gravy. the staff are super friendly and happy. I love this place, I make the 30 minute drive specifically to get it because all other chicken is a disappointment compared to Gerry's charcoal chicken.

Absolutely lovely little chicken shop! Very welcoming and warm, and although the chips are our favourite, the chicken is cooked very well too!! Definitely coming back in the future.

I often buy just the POTATOES to go with a home cooked meal, or to eat on their own. They are declicious even heated up in the microwave the next day. Also, I notice they always have very clean windows :)

The missus loves the fish and chips.   I personally like the chicken schnitzel for making sammies at home.  The chips are VERY good.  The char-broiled chicken is a nice alternative to KFC and heaps better than Nandos.  The flavour reminds me of a place in California US called El Pollo Loco. A great addition to the variety of eateries and apparently a legend in the Upper Hutt.  I would recommend.

This is an honest review. I made a phone order and said what my allergies were. At first I was told only to not have the bean salad. After picking it up I could taste chilli on the chicken so I rang again to double check, turns out I can't have the chicken either (after already eating some). However the man at the shop was lovely and very kind to us. My brother liked the potato and chips, the stuffing was heavy on chilli, the chicken was nice on its own.

Family business of legendary proportions. The food is always more than expected. It’s so very good and quality consistent. <br/>Brilliant service and always a guaranteed fav.<br/>We travel great distances now that Gerry’s is no longer local, but we need a fix to ensure the legend is secured in our memories and tummies.<br/>They’ll be writing campfires about this place in years to come (if the don’t already).

The best chips in town. The potatoes are awesome as well. They have a great range of food, from chicken to lamb to fish - it's all really good and huge portions.<br/>

Ordered a two piece chicken snitzel meal pack for $15. I eat with my eyes and this meal was so filling, I couldn't eat it all. The meal was cooked well and the roast potatoes were really yummy and not overcooked, got quite a few potatoes (about 7). Can't wait to try the roast chicken meal next time.

It is my favourite place for takeaways in Upper Hutt. Chicken, wedges and chips are all amazing. Will definetly go back time and time again.

Favourite place to eat ever came back to Upper Hutt after a while still tastes as good as it did I use to get take out weekly every thing always tastes amazing I love the beef meal and they have the best flavouring on there chips

Feels like my dirty little secret but I love this place. We always get the same thing - fish and chips. But I have no doubt the chicken would be good too. The guy is always friendly to my 3.5yo and says hello to her, he once gave her a choc mousse for free which she was stoked with. We usually go early, around 4.30ish so it’s quick and quiet at that time. The chips are sooooo good, I always eat too many cos even though I’m full they taste so good I just can’t help myself. Big pieces of fish too. $20 feeds 3 of us with a fair bit leftover too.

Honestly the best chips in Upper Hutt ! Everyone I know enjoys there food and have never heard of a bad review from Gerry’s charcoal chicken

Excellent food and friendly service. My children absolutely loved the beef and ate better than I have seen in a long time!! Food was delicious and the chicken had an amazing flavour and was so juicy. Roast pumpkin was best I have had. Only downside was that they didn't take credit so had to get cash since our debit card was from Australia. But they were friendly even through the process of discovering that after we ordered.

The chicken is beautifully cooked and the stuffing to die for. The fish tastes amazing not too grissy or heavy on the flour. The chips are definitely different from several take aways. They are the best part.

I visit this place once a week. My kids and my wife loves the fish and chips here as it's the best in town. For myself, I love the charcoal roasted chicken with green peas, carrots and roasted potatoes. It's not good for everyone but can't help it to mix the stuffing with the chicken and vegetables. Must visit place in Upper Hutt.

AMAZING chicken.  First visit last night to get dinner and the place was packed. The guy serving was very polite and friendly and managed to get everyone outta there with smiles on their faces and their food within about 10 mins of us walking in. Our chicken was still cooking so we had to wait a little bit longer but he acknowledged us and apologised for the wait. Needless to say, we were very impressed. the chicken was huge and perfectly cooked. we also got a large chips to share and the portion was too big for us but appreciated nonetheless. we'll definitely be back. Gerry's chicken is super tasty. thanks for a great meal!

My favourite place in the world! If you want amazing succulent juicy chargrilled chicken... this is where it's at! Been around ever since I was 2 years old... my mum used to take me and now I take my children and family friends...<br/><br/>Wonderful family local owned business based in upper hutt.<br/><br/>There roasted potatoes and hot chips are finger licking goooodddd.. I mean with a family secrete of 16 herbs and spices you got to try it!!!. but thats not all they do. They make fish and chips meals, home made chocolate moose and so much more.. u just have to see it to believe it...<br/><br/>They also cater for family functions, dine in or take away... if you ever travel to upper hutt! Literally don't have a bad word to say about these guys!! We've been at least a dozen times and haven't had a bad experience! The chips are so good we order way more than we'll actually eat cause we remember how good they are! Super affordable and always really good service! My fave takeaway ever 💕💕💕

I highly recommend the fish meals!  I think the prices are great for what you get.  My husband will eat one on his own but I will share one with my daughter as they are huge.  The roast potatoes are also a favourite.  I love everything about the fish meals and would rather have this than go to a fish n chip shop.  If it was my Birthday and I was to choose a take-away then this would be my first choice!!!  Friendly staff.

This place is amazing. Always came here for the yummy chips after college and now i bring my family here. Price is great! Especially for 6 of us :) Service is fantastic and soo friendly. My family and I have been a customer since I was a teenager. The food is always good. The service is always friendly and fast. Good value for money :)

Food is amazing.  Massive in size, taste and flavour.    Meals are old school as with good veges, roast potatoes.  Service is always friendly.   Chicken is the bomb, always juicy and succulent, the chips are tasty and nice thick cuts so not so fatty.  The best is the gravy.  These guys don't skimp on anything.  It's all maximus juiciness.

A couple of friends and I went here for a meal. We decided to go at 10.30am as soon as it opened in order to get the freshest chicken. Our meals were amazing. Its not fancy food, but its very tasty. They have the best potatoes ever!!

Delicious chips and roast potatoes. Prices are too high for a plate of carrots peas and corn! Also every time I purchase the chicken, the portion size keeps diminishing, the price has risen, and its always luke warm.

I get the $13 Charcoal Chicken pack and a Garlic Roll every time I visit Gerry's and have always enjoyed it. Sometimes the chicken does seem to be a little dry but the chips are always great and have delicious seasoning. I'm always served by the same guy who, although he doesn't go for small talk, is always efficient with getting my meal to me.

Wow business must really be booming for Gerry's. We purchased a large portoin on their plate of veges which says it has roast potatoes, peas, corns, carrots &amp; gravy. There were 3 potatoes which was absolutely pathetic and we paid almost $12 for that?!?!<br/><br/>We rang them to tell them we thought this was a bit mean considering this is their large size and we paid $12 fr 3 potates and some carrots, corn and peas and he told me that was what it was and if we didn't like it, we didn't have to go back there. He made no attempt to remedy it or keep our business. When we told him we wouldn't go back, he said that was fine by him.<br/><br/>Shame because the chips there are really yummy. In summary, overpriced and not really worth it considering what you are paying. Go to Roast House instead or KFC if you are wanting chicken.<br/><br/>I wish them all the best and obviously they are doing so well our custom isn't needed. What a joke!

SOOOOOO GOOD! OMG!!! I remember goign here after college to get the yummy chips and over the years have also visited and its been just as good. Now that I live in Auckland it sucks but cant wait to go in over my holiday during easter break. Please put a menu up!! 5 stars :)

Really unhappy with our meals, all at the table said it tasted funny, politely and quietly spoke to the guy working about it but was met with a less than helpful response and were told that we were wrong and it was our taste buds not his food and that we should have asked what it would taste like. We eat out often and know what tastes good and what doesn't. We weren't asking for a refund or anything were just trying to make him aware. My advice is get some front of house staff cause this guy clearly doesn't know anything about customer service. Like i said we eat out alot and we will definitely not be returning there mostly because of his attitude.

The lunch/dinner meals are priced from $10 to $20, but generous with portion sizes and it does taste great! The potatoes are simply to die for, and their usually perfectly cooked chips with the seasoning gets anyone in Upper Hutt drooling!! The service is OK, friendly occasionally, they have picked up the slack recently though. 4* cause they taste so damn great and are quite cheap!

Gerry's is a great place for a great meal. Keep up the good work. I'll be back. :)

Best takeaway in Upper Hutt imo, whatever they season their chickens &amp; their chips with is gold, lol at the people accused of stealing, sounds like the competition to me!!!!!

The food is delicious but the people, well they are polite but never smile. it must be a pre-requisite for the job, if you smile don't apply. Having said that it usually comes from management if they are sad and unhappy people then it will flow down to the staff. Maybe they only get paid peanuts so that doesn't include a smile

Dont go here unless you want to be accused of stealing chicken in front of 20 people. Yes thats right me and my husband and a friend went here on Saturday night and decided to eat in, my husband paid for mine and his meal and then our friend paid for his meal right after his. Me and my husband got our meals a short time later then 20mins later we were wondering where our friends meal was, he went up and asked, only to be told, who are you? you didnt pay for a meal and was asked to show his receipt, the girl at the counter didnt give him a receipt so he did not have one, to this he was accused of trying to steal the food and told he would have to bring in his bank statement to prove he paid for the meal. Thats when me and my husband went round to the counter and showed them our receipt and showed that we were ordered 86 and he ordered right after us so he must be order 87, which they said they didnt have, i then pointed out the girl who served him which was only 25mins early and they werent that busy so she would have rembered taking his order. So they partially refunded him, no meal was given to him and they only refunded him for his chicken meal and not his bean salad (why would they refund him if he was supposedly trying to steal the meal?). This whole experience was completely humiliating to be accused of trying to steal a chicken meal in front of about 15 people!! they didnt even bother to check their eftpos machine to see if the meal was paid for nor did they even ask the girl who served our friend if she had taken his order. When we got home we discovered that yes indeed our friend had indeed paid for his meal!! and since he was not given a full refund,Gerrys Charcoal chicken stole from our friend and not the other way round!! I would never go back here again, and suggest they employ staff who know what they are doing il be telling everyone i know dont go there unless you want to be accused of theft. I hope they go out of business as that is the worst service i have ever experienced in my life!!!!!!!!!!

Best takeaway place in town according to us.<br/><br/>Generous meal size suits the husband well! We love it especially because we feel like we're getting a healthy takeaway meal with the rotisserie chicken (and you can get healthy slices of lamb or pork instead now too), yummy roast pumpkin (an extra), peas and corn (Maybe except for the potatoes - our little indulgence!). <br/><br/>And you should try the wedges too!!!<br/><br/>Service superb - always very friendly, personal and efficient.

The chips with the seasoning, wow. Delicious. I always make a special effort to go there just for the chips. And you get heaps.mmm mmm.
