Review Great India - Wellington

Sam Samarasooriya
It was a Sunday evening and came for the dinner. Customer service is great and had a friendly service and food suggestions from Farhat. Had Murgh Biriyani and Cheese Naan along with Masala Chai ( should try this) and they were awesome. Im gonna come back..!!! Thanks

Ok, I don't change my mind about Indian restaurants usually. Because this is the food that I grew up with. So very picky. But this one I did. When I went here the first time in July, I thought this was one of those Indian joints for white people. Posh. Tad expensive. Flavors toned down. Wasn't too kicked. Staff was great though! But the second time no other restaurant was open on Diwali so went in anyways. Ordered up food: Dalmakhni, Naan, Veg paneer curry. And boy was outstanding. This time had flavours to mild and it was still punching. Still tasted like food back home. My friend who is a kiwi was in love too! Didn't think could beat two sets of audience with same food. They did :)

Very welcoming and amazing service from the team at Great India. The food was well portioned and cooked fresh. A hot towel at the end of the meal is the icing on the cake for me! Will definitely be coming back!

This is some of the best Indian food I have eaten. The flavours of almost every dish we tried were complex and layered, and the serving sizes are excellent for the price. The pakoras are the best I've had outside of an actual Indian kitchen, and the Dal soup was incredible. The service is also fantastic, with a really nice mix of friendly and formal. A wonderful dining experience.

Went twice in two weeks as was in Wellington both weeks for business. First night was two of us. Food was awesome and fairly priced. Second week was a group of six. They tailored our meals for a group from entrees to mains and it was perfect. So much food for the price. And all of it was tasty. No complaints. Highly recommended.

Searched for Goan food on Google and this place came up, decided the reviews were good so would try it out when we visited Wellington. A shame that if only three people you can't reserve a table in advance but understandable. The waiter suggested an earlier rather than later time for dinning. We arrived just in time, the table was ready and we were given plenty of time to chose our meals. The food here is awesome to say the least, the menu gives you plenty to chose from and there will be something to suit most tastes. The dishes were rich and full of flavor. The staff were very pleasant and didn't hassle you, the restaurant was busy which made the advice of getting in earlier a wise one, would definitely want to eat here again.

Was a lovely meal and great service. Unfortunately a short lady left with my black woollen coat accidentally. I believe her and her partner were heading to the Credence Clearwater Collective show. The restaurant has my contact details if you would kindly return it. I left yours with them. Thank you🙏

Had the chicken Dopiaza and liked it a lot! Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Overall a great experience!

First time here - Tonight’s Lamb Madras ticked all boxes! The sauce was flavoursome and the perfect authentic consistency, the lamb was tender and fall apart soft. the parantha and naans were delicious. The service was amazing, all the waiters and the manager were just fantastic. They really care about customer service here. The warm cloth at the end was such a nice unique touch!

Indian curry that’s a little bit fancy, with service to match. Curries were tasty, packed full of flavour, not greasy and won’t make you regret it the next day! We came for dinner on a Saturday night, no booking, and found a spot easily. The waiters were very attentive, the prices were very reasonable.

Great India Restaurant is best place you can have the Great authentic Indian Food in Wellington. 5***** rating go to the team behind the taste of India and the best customer service I ever had in Indian Restaurant in NZ.

Without a doubt one of, if not "the" best restaurants in wellington. fantastic food, exemplary service. truly a must visit if you are in wellington. The butter chicken is especially popular. For those that want to live on the wild side there are some "off-Menu" items that get way, way spicier than a super-hot vindaloo.

Decided to go with this option being a first-timer in Wellington but the place wasn’t upto the expectations neither to 4.1 rating nor its name. Food- Atleast it was there for us to it after a long drive from Auckland, taste was no good. I liked the customer service though.

Unfortunately, my friend and I ordered a butter chicken and cheese naan from Great Indian on Saturday to our utter disappointment when we arrived home and opened it up the naan was dripping in oil and the curry tasted like a blend of tomato & pumpkin soup with sour cream. To top it all off the next morning we realised that we had got food poisoning from the food! Wouldn’t recommend.

Best Indian food in Wellington.

Fantastic. Consistently great food and great service. I've been a regular here for a long time and frankly its my favourite food place in wellington. $12 lunch deal for the win!

Came to Wellington for work and decided to order in. I ordered the butter chicken with coconut rice. The butter chicken is really bland and lacking flavour. The chicken is dry and overcooked. The naan bread and coconut rice is nice.. But the bland butter chicken ruined it for me. Being Indian I have tried a lot of butter chicken and honestly this doesn't hit the mark (or come ever close to it).

It was our first time at this restaurant. Customer service was good. Unfortunately we were very disappointed with the food. We ordered Chicken, karahi paneer and channa masala. None of the dishes had the right flavour. Chicken dish was too sweet, karahi paneer’s gravy was very tangy and that’s all we could taste in the entire dish.<br/>Channa masala was ok, not the best.<br/><br/>

Visited this place after 5 years for lunch today. I had high hopes with the place as, I had very good experiance as far as I can remember 5 years ago.<br/><br/>To be honest I felt very disappointed with the lunch manu and specially with the mains (chicken tikka masala and sahi paneer). The chicken pieces were clearly frozen and re-heated. This was so dry from inside and hard time chewing. With all that experiance with the food, I have to say that the guy serving the food was nice.<br/><br/>I wish all the best to these guys to improve their food. Customers are hard to get and specially their trust so please don't take them for granted.

Solo business trip on a miserable grey evening. Service here is very friendly, good selection of vegetarian dishes. Coconut rice especially good. I'll be back again.

Excellent customer service, top of the line Indian food.<br/>Each curry had different taste and aroma, value for money.<br/>Will recommend every Wellington visitor to at least dine in once, owner was in his toes and looked after every customer personally and made sure all things were right.<br/>Veg n non veg both options are must to try.<br/>Cheese garlic nan, onion Kulcha, paneer kadhai and chicken jalfrezi.

Very friendly staff and the butter chicken and chicken korma was divine.<br/>I will definitely be back again<br/>The restaurant was fairly busy as well

Got lunch takeaway from here today & it was delicious- I am not a big fan of Indian food but gave this a try after some recommendations - got 1 of the $12 lunch special - got butter chicken, coconut rice & a garlic naan - it was so good & a definite bargain. It was hot, flavoursome, portion was good. Give it a try - I will be back.no pic was to busy eating 🍽

Alright for a dinner out but probably wouldn’t go back. Was very busy when we arrived and as a table of two we were forgotten about while parties that arrived later received food before we’d had the chance to order. Meal was decent, didn’t appreciate having to pay extra for rice though appreciated the variety. Very delicious mango lassi and naan. Nice enough overall. Staff were very friendly
Vish Gaikwad
Good service. Attentive and friendly staff. Food was very average esp the curry. Maybe the chefs were struggling with the seasonal changes to the fresh vegetables in the curry...completely off balance..But that may be just the curry we ordered. Willing to try something else next time.

Excellent restaurant. Great all round experience. 10 out of 10 times I go there I receive excellent service. I really appreciate that about the restaurant, when the service is consistently at a high standard. The staff are well trained and courteous, creating a very good first impression the moment you walk in. Food is excellent. Highly recommend the veal on the Maharaja section of the menu. The spices and flavors are very nicely blended together and create a unique flavor explosion on your tastebuds! Every time I've been there the rotis are also grilled to a very high standard. Never over burnt, overcooked. Love the saffron rice! The mango lassi really goes with the meal as well. Clearly a restaurant that takes pride in its food and sets very high standards. Highly recommended

came to this place to have decent food, ended up having not edible food. costly, but food should be tasty. bad night. veg is not good, non veg is ok.

All that glitters is not gold had visited this restaurant on valentines day as it looks like not usual Indian restaurant. We thought their food will be worth the amount we are spending but it was let down by entrees tofia e noor( panner tikka) panner was very dry and bland no flavours at all. Still we thought mains will be worth it but again got disappointed. Service was ok not so great but the price they charge are not worth the food. Did not get a chance to pass the feedback as none of the service staff asked about the food as i think they were already aware that our table had not liked the food. So just a feedback as i have tried many indian restaurants all over NZ and i know the taste is bit different if we compare to india but its was not worth comparing to a takeaway tase of india on kent terrace where we sometimes get takeaway food. Huge disappointment and let down.

Great India lived up to the name. Delicious take away saag with lamb paired with a Syrah and naan. Service was fast and friendly. We will be back.

Very impressed with this place! Came here tonight with my partner and was seated right away. The staff took extra care with creating a great customer experience. Curry it's self was a little watery, but the naan bread was fabulous. Honestly the best customer service I have ever experienced in a resturant in a long time. I would definitely return.

On a cold winter lunch this is a great place to spend an hour. I meet a few friends here and excellent quality and tastes, hosts are very welcoming. Shahi paneer is my choice, great Nan too.

Since when do we take dining recommendations from bouncers... anyway initial high hopes of having a great Indian dinner were quickly dashed when we were sat at a table with one of us having to face a wall... We ordered our usual staples, fish curry, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan etc, but the food that came out left us all unsatisfied and grumpy. The naan was undercooked and doughy, the fish curry looked and tasted like thawed fish in onion gravy, and I couldn't bring myself to finish either of them. The server seemed disinterested in our complaints, but the kind manager showed concern as we checked out and removed the mains from our bill. It's definitely a popular rowdy spot but needs some serious work in the kitchen to deliver!
Brett A
Crap... food. Chicken tiki masala was not a CTM.... more like a chicken breast boil in a onion gravy...... anyone who has reviewed this place more than a 1.... has never been here....
Ling Ling
Wow this place was really average. All our mains were dreary not much spice fish dish was plain. Lamb korma was tasteless. Garlic naan was even average like raw dough how do you get that wrong. Have been here before and it was way better so not sure what went wrong tonight.

Just FYI friends, Worst Indian restaurant in New Zealand.<br/>Better to stay from this shit place.<br/>Staff is very Good, its just the person named as Mitesh(may be the owner) who don't know how to treat the customers and how to take order.<br/>Been here quite a few times and we were really satisfied with the food and service but food tonight was shit and this guy has an attitude problem I think.<br/><br/>This place is really a shame on the name of all Indian restaurants.<br/>Its just my opinion about this place.<br/>Friends better to change your mind, next time you think of going to this shitty place.<br/><br/>Thanks

Tbh a big no to this place , will never see this place again . Reason , not being food but owner itself . Me and my partner been twice to this place and had an amazing time and food as well . So , I thought will take few of my mates . Rude , cocky and so up to himself owner (being told by staff that he's the owner OKAY) was treating us like we aren't the customer but someone who's begging food . He got our order and then served us with extra hot chilli after being requested for Med-Hot chilli. We have mentioned to staff and being told they will do something about it , but did nothing. <br/><br/>Not complaining but just a little advise change your behaviour either you will end up loosing all of your beloved customer . Many thanks :)

I do not understand quite exactly how this place is this highly rated. Our order was big enough for anyone to get it wrong or screw it up. But they did. <br/>We ordered butter chicken and chicken tikka masala for takeaway. <br/>Even though I reached the restaurant on the pick up time, it took them another 20 minutes to get my order ready. <br/>Moving on, when we finally unpacked the food - we realized it was nothing like the butter chicken and tikka masala curries we had elsewhere. Butter chicken tasted uncooked with raw tomatoes and smelly gravy. Tikka masala was light yellow colored liquid that's better left undescribed. Naan bread was too thick, chewy and fluffy. <br/>What an utter waste of time and effort.
Felicity
Relaxed and friendly feel to the place, but perhaps too relaxed in terms of service. As a Brit I've eaten a few curries in my time - and I thought to myself 'is this a korma I'm eating'? Then I argued with myself a little because who cares? It was tasty. The nann bread was good and the chicken tikka starter was lush. I haven't given this a 4 because theres actually a nicer little curry place round the corner which I would! That saying, Great India is good for a relaxed meal with friends.

The best Indian restaurant in Wellington. Exceptional service and fantastic food. A wide range of food choices. Definately worth the price you pay.

Worst Indian restaurant ever!! Regret my decision of going to such a worthless place for my partner's birthday. The food is below average and way over priced. It took forever for us to get our order and after a year long wait the food quality was not at all as expected. The staff were welcoming but acted a bit weird.<br/>Would not recommend anyone who loves Indian food to visit this restaurant. Doesn't even deserve 1 rating!

This place has a very calming ambiance. Very good hospitality. We ordered tandoori chicken which was very tender and delicious. <br/>Karahi paneer was brought in a small karahi and a little candle under it. Looked very cute and tasted very well. The garlic naan was really soft and one was enough for one person.<br/>They give hot towel to wipe hands, that was refreshing. They have a fancy water bottle which is actually a Bombay Saphire gin bottle. At the end<br/>Our bill didn't have the tandoori chicken included so we asked them to add. But they gave it on the house. So generous of them. Very polite and friendly staff. Would recommend Great India for food.

Nothing special about the decor or the location. Food however is pretty tasty. <br/><br/>We start with the usual pappadums with 3 x chutneys, some pickled chillies and some raita. Always good. Goan pork curry was lovely. Rich, complex flavours and moderately warm, very tender, lean pork chunks. Then butter chicken for the kids, which was sweet and tender albeit more bland than usual. Then Paneer Matta - large pieces of paneer, green peas, with loads of fresh tomato and onion curry.<br/><br/>The coconut rice was gluggy and not particularly coconutty. Serving size not large. The Peshwari naan had lots of coconut, raisins, pistachios - great presentation too.<br/><br/>Menu quite limited. No street food, no goat dishes, no dosa. Nothing extraordinary.<br/><br/>Table not big enough for 4.

The food is absolutely delicious and such a great deal for what you get. I had the bhuna josh curry with pullau rice and garlic naan, everything was so good and there were some amazing flavours that I could have eaten everything by itself and I would've been happy. <br/>The staff were so friendly and I had a great experience there. I would definitely recommend this place!

Came here with a big group of 10, including 2 vegans (myself and my partner) and this restaurant were amazing and full of advice and help about everything on the menu. So many options for our diet which I think is an important thing to have.<br/>We ended up getting a selection of bread and rice for the table and each had our own curry (we got Vegetable Dumpling curry). All food came out at the same time which is always good! <br/>The service was amazing and next to perfection. All staff working were very polite.<br/>I'm here in Wellington on holiday and the last couple days I've been amazing when it comes to food and service! Absolutely stunning compared to Auckland

Visited this place with friends for dinner on new year day. It was quite busy as many restaurants were closed in town. I understand the place is a long establishment in Wellington and the deco begins to show its age. The carpet does have a unpleasant smell -maybe a time to upscale the deco to match the relatively high price tags. The food were fine but nothing to shout about. I would expected the similar food from a normal Indian takeaway but with a lower price. The service was rather slow as well. We waited a good 40 mins before dishes appearing. Not sure if this is the case for normally working days. Staff were reasonably friendly but lack warmth. Quick bite yes, special dating, maybe not.

Best Indian food eaten outside of India. Flavours hit the right note. Perfection in every dish. Courteous, attentive and friendly staff. Will surely go back.
Shyamak Patel
Great food. The Goan pork curry is definitely spot on. Great value for money. Much better than most of the other Indian restaurant in Wellington.

Went to The Great India tonight for my sister's birthday and the service is 5 star!! We ordered Naan and rice for a table of 6 and couldn't even finish it despite 3 big eating boys!! The variety of naans was delicious and the curries were so flavoursome! When we were accidentally brought the wrong curries the waiter was most apologetic and had the correct ones brought out within 2 mins. They also let us keep the wrong ones to enjoy so we had 2 extra curries for the table. Our waters were always full, hot towels at the end for our hands and doggy bags full of food to take home! They also let us use two entertainment cards for the one table which is a rare occurrence! To the team at great India - thank you for your amazing, professional and friendly service. You are a cut above the rest and its those little gestures that will ensure we come back!!

Amazing how places you pass everyday can be taken for granted but then once you enter into their atmosphere enjoy the company of others with fantastic food and steadfast service can really make an evening special.<br/><br/>For appetizer a group of five of us had poppadoms with four assorted chutneys which ranged from super sweet to super spicy. Then to continue the feast, selected Onion Bhaji with coleslaw, Chicken Korma with a selection of naans that ranged from a honey and peanut specialty, garlic, plain and a few other breads.<br/><br/>I thoroughly enjoyed this experience with the waiters being very polite and accommodating and an owner who was present to ask us how our meals were going. All topped off with steaming hot towels and a full stomach. Will definitely return one day.
EsmeEats
Had the best garlic naan bread from here, so tasty! Also really enjoyed the vegetarian dumpling dish but found the chicken madras pretty bland and not very memorable

Hands down the best Indian food I've had. The wait staff is fantastic, and they can go through the menu items clearly if needed. The entrees alone would have done it for us - we had the mixed entree platter, and didn't realise the portions would be so big, and everything so full of distinct and intense flavour that we ate it all at the risk of not having space for mains. We still had the mains - curries from the Chef's Specialty section, and they were mind blowingly delicious. <br/><br/>To state the obvious, I highly recommend this place, and I shall be back (multiple times...)

Man I like a good curry, but I find it very hard to find one. Maybe it's my British taste having not grown up with the New Zealand style of curry, but whatever it is I do struggle.<br/><br/>During a conversation at work about this subject, a couple of people mentioned Great India as a very good place.<br/><br/>Today I tried it at lunchtime with a colleague who is Vegan.<br/><br/>They were busy but we were seen to and served in good time. They were very polite and when my colleague mentioned he was Vegan they were able to provide and cater to his needs. Our meals also came out quickly.<br/><br/>They were very good. My colleague was blown away.<br/><br/>I thoroughly enjoyed my Chicken Madras. Nice amount of succulent chicken. Fresh, warm soft garlic naan. Not as garlicy as I would have preferred but it was good.<br/><br/>I also ordered an Emersons Bookbinder.<br/><br/>All up it cost me $25 (The beer was $13)<br/><br/>Fantastic service, lovely, fresh, flavoursome food at a good price.<br/><br/>I will be back very soon.
Hharkirat Siingh
The food was just wow! The lunch menu was incredible and so was the taste. Great indian flavours and great value for money! A must visit place if you are looking for subcontinent flavours out in the city centre.

I have tried a few Indian restaurants but the butter Chicken and prawn dish prepared here was absolutely delicious that I must rate this restaurant to have the best Indian meal in town. The service is great, food prices are a bit expensive especially the seafood meals, but the price is worth the meal that you will pay for. Located in manners st, it is in the heart of the CBD. The environment is also quite cosy and relaxing. Will definitely be visiting again.

We went for dinner on Saturday 11 June 2016. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel very special with the Maitre d welcoming us with a handshake and showing us to our seats. The waiting staff were very friendly and attentive and asked us at the beginning if we were under any time pressure. The restaurant ambiance was great, the food was fantastic and probably one of the best curries I have had in a long time. I would have no hesitation recommending Great India and I personally can't wait to eat there again
NavNoor Dhiman
The best in the market for indian food. The ambiance is just amazing along with the staff being so polite and cooperative.<br/>A bit heavy on pocket though. But every penny is worth it .

Nice atmosphere... clean and tidy.....food is above average!!!!!!!!!reasonable price. good location !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the best lunch place in this town. Worth a try $12 lunch. Always good quality. Only down side is it takes a bit longer than you expect.
Katie
British people love curry and thus spot is it!!!<br/>Been her loads of times. Staff are friendly. Food is award winning and tastes just like back home (England). Nothing is ever to much to ask and the manager has s very good sence of humour. Will be going back soon
Nick
$12 lunch represent extremely good value. Tasty food and good service. They take your coat and give you warm face towels after your meal, so it feels like a high-class experience with the high cost. I also like how you don't have to pay extra for a garlic naan!<br/>Pro-tip: ask for a heat level one level lower than you would at other Indian restaurants in Wellington. hot = HOT here.
Jasmine Sandhu
I came here for the lunch menu - $12 for curry, rice and naan. Quite a good portion size for a lunch menu, I was so full I couldn't touch the rice! The best thing about the lunch menu is the variety of the lunch options, not only for the curry itself but also the rice and naan. Also, good meat to curry ratio! Naan was delicious and soft and the sweet lassi I had on the side was pretty good too. Not sure why the water glasses are so tiny though!
Ishaan Kochhar
I'm regular here. The food is quite good and quite authentic. If you are looking for a spicy affair and don't mind shelling some cash out, this is the place for you. My recommendation try the specials and the tandoori platter. A "sizzler" with a indian twist.
Kashish Obhan
It was very disappointing to see how Indian food is assassinated to the level beyond one can ever take, the food here was not less than just a mere insult to Indian food n cuisine, we have order the combination of vegetarian n non veg food i.e. paneer tikka masala n chicken tikka masala n couple of entree to my surprise the curry tasted sour n had an awful taste. I am Indian n belong to food industry n have given 13 year in Indian food have experience the cuisine in many places but this was a shame n most embarrassing thing was i saw Indian map used as plate mates n were disposable which very dispose after every use to my understand. I guess there are better things for this purpose, map is as symbolic as flag of any nation n demeaning either it to my understanding is just disrespecting n hurting the sentiments of the nation and its people.

Great India is a very well known Wellington establishment. It has won numerous awards over the years and deservedly do. <br/><br/>It's quite unique in that it is possibly the only Indian restaurant with such a "high-class" atmosphere with crisp white napkins. As such, the service is outstanding and the food superb
Ohhh Neil
So happy to have found a place that will give me a spicy curry. Ordered the lamb special and asked for hot, presumed I would get the normal "hot" curry I get when I order at every other Indian. Nope was great, had sides and BYO, plus was in the entertainment book, great value and tasty food.

While visiting Wellington me and friend decided to try Great India as he absolutely loves Indian food. Upon entering we both thought the restaurant had a nice atmosphere and from our previous experiences in Wellington we were looking for a real experience. We were seated straight away which was nice, the waiter asked us a question but we were unable to understand the waiter, upon asking him to repeat we were asked if we were in a hurry to leave... Not something I particularly want to hear just as I am seated. During the dinner we also had some rather interesting experiences which included,  suggested wine which was not suited for our meals, hot flannels handed to us with metal tongs.Although the customer service was strange at times the food was faultless... Next time I will get the food takeaway instead of dining in. I was surprised to see a newspaper article on the wall regarding best customer service but seeing it was from 2005 made me understand better. If the service was better I would definitely want to dine in again.

Should the fancy for a curry take you on a Monday (when taste of India is closed) then this is the place to come.<br/><br/>I only ever had a takeaway from this place but on first glance the decor is warm and inviting, the fish tanks are a great addition and the staff were really friendly. Had a great little chat with him. <br/><br/>The curry and starters were outstanding, the mint yoghurt with poppadoms were probably my favourite part of the meal. Excellent selection on the menu and is one of the areas where it has taste of India beat
Ximena Cataldo GonzĂĄlez
Traditional Indian restaurant, with excellent service and tasty food. We had to wait just 5-10 minutes for a table without reservation. It's a very good place to dinner.
Loren Smith
Worst Indian I've ever eaten, the best part of the meal was the wine. Food tasted like salt and had little to no flavour. Very disappointed as we tried this restaurant due to its decent rating on zomato.
James Ford
Went here for a work lunch a while back and was thoroughly impressed. One of the best curries I've had, though I tend to keep it pretty basic in terms of spice as I am woeful at handling it.<br/><br/>Everyone ordered a range of curries and there was a resounding sound of approval of how authentic, tasty and great the portion sizes wore. They catered to the group amazingly, supplying an array of rices and nan breads to share, with an entree of different sauces and tasty popadoms. High praises for the mango chutney and coconut rice - both of which are worth going here simply to try all though only side dishes.<br/><br/>My lamb Korma was smooth and tasty, combined with everything it went down a treat.<br/><br/>Check the photos out they explain everything. Thanks guys!
Kalani
Food was great. However, both times I went hear the past year, service was much much slower than other places I have been to. Price per dish may be slightly higher than other Indian Restaurants, but worth the quality of it
Graham
Went on Thursday, 18 June 2015. Favourite Indian restaurant in New Zealand. Cannot fault the quality on the food. An absolute joy to taste an Indian meal that does not feel it has come from some processed production line. Three of us dined. Papadoms and a selection of chutneys to start. Delicious! A chicken madras, a chicken jalfezie and a pork vindaloo were ordered, along with a plain and garlic naan. Stunning meals. The pork was especially memorable and combined brilliantly with the sourness of the vindaloo sauce. You can see why they won best restaurant in Wellington a few years ago. Highly recommended.
Egon Ronnie
Great. Fully recommend this place. Tasty starter and main course. Helpful and attentive service. Excellent value for money in the centre of Wellington.
Shiv
Absolutely superb service and delicious food. First experience was just to get some takeout, but was offered a seat while I waited for it to be freshly cooked, and was even offered lemon water! Had to come back with friends for a BYO, which had decently priced corkage (from what I remember?) and a wide variety of options for dishes — ranging in price, but more on the moderate end. Definitely a spot to check out (as an occasional treat for students like myself) if you love good Indian food!
Gez
First class Indian. The name says it all! Excellent service plus an extensive menu. The food was fresh and very tasty. Loved it all. Highly recommend.
Adam
Went here for Byo on Saturday night with another couple. Atmosphere was great, service was of a 5 star establishment along with the food we ordered. Waiter explained what each dish was and origin. Pricing was even better!!

I went here for the first time today. I had the $12 lunch special consisting of curry, rice and bread (I went with the Garlic Naan).<br/><br/>Overall a really good experience. The staff were very polite and friendly, service was swift. There was a minor mixup with my order but staff addressed it very prompty, courteously and professionally.<br/><br/>The Garlic Naan was good (not the best ive had in wellington but still very good). The curry was excellent.<br/><br/>The rice was very interesting. In most places the curry is good whereas the rice is a bland chore that one must endure to offset the enjoyment of the curry.<br/>However, the spiced rice at Great India was a wonderful exception to this. The rice itself was delicious. Really impressed.<br/><br/>Portions weren't as big as one normally gets with a curry meal, but for $12, really great value.<br/><br/>I strongly recommend Great India.<br/><br/>Additional: Its been five months since I posted this review. Since then, I have been back to Great India almost every weekend. Consistently excellent food and excellent service. Its become my favourite eating venue in Wellington. Strongly recommend.
Satyaki Sensarma
Great taste and great flavours of India at Wellington. Been there several times. Great quality and great service. Ambience is also really charming. All the dishes taste awesome. Specially remember chicken tandoori. Long live!
Joseph M Joy
Great Indian restaurant who serve great Indian food.<br/>My favorite used to Chicken Tikka Masala (very hot), and their service is really good.<br/><br/>The place gets really busy during the weekday for the lunch as their Lunch combo is great value for money. I have been there every time when I travel to Wellington, and there was only instance where they couldn't impress me, as personally I didn't like their special Chicken biriyani.
Muffin Mum
Great India in one of our weekend family lunch spots, Miss11 never objects to a meal here. <br/>The lunch meal is from the special lunch menu and you choose a main, a type of rice and a variety of naan bread. Unlike other Indian restaurants it is all served on your plate in individual portions. I like this as it means I get more than two spoonfuls of rice before the others dish it all up.<br/>The food is good, it is the kind of Indian taste that you find yourself craving and only this place will do. <br/>It wouldn't be somewhere I would go to in the evenings but I certainly enjoy lunch and leave feeling like I have had a meal.

Best Indian restaurant ever. Best food and service hands down and consistently so for many years. Expect a wait as the curries aren't pre-prepared.

The food was very good and the service outstanding. Really enjoyed the education about where our chosen dishes came from. Would recommend :-)

Always the best service! Food is great too at both lunch and dinner

Consistently excellent food and service. The owner always makes us feel welcome, and either remembers us or does a great job at pretending. I would say that the food is among the best Indian in Wellie. Lots of choice, no compromising on the flavours. And the hot minty handtowels brought to the table are always a treat. The staff seem (rightly) proud to work there and provide great service.

Service was fantastic, the food was amazing and very authentic. I can't wait to go back to wellington to have another great experience here again. Would highly recommend this place it was a great find

Their lunch special is not too bad but fairly limited in choices. Have tried both the Korma and Butter Chicken options, both pretty good but be warned quite small. You might leave hungry.<br/><br/>They also need to vacuum the floor from the night before, was a lot of detritus down there.<br/><br/>Service is always pretty good esp for an Indian restaurant.

Have spent most of my life in the UK this is the first Indian restaurant in NZ that I have eaten in that knows how to make good korma.the peshawari nan was is also a great <br/>Very professional staff especially the man in the suit

We went to this restaurant at the recommendation of some friends and it was heartening to discover that those recommendations were not empty promises. The Great India restaurant could not be better named. The little things make the difference. The sophisticated non-Indian music provided a non-kitsch backdrop for an unobtrusive front of house to do their work and a gave us a very pleasurable dining experience. The food was simply the tastiest Indian food we have ever tasted. Vindaloo and Butter Chicken to die for in realistic meal-size quantities. Perfect. Alas I don't think they would deliver to Christchurch. I will ask them today .

I visited this restaurant with my friend for lunch. We order two curries one veg and one non-veg. When we got our food I was so shocked by the portion size (too small). The veg curry was off. When I told manager about that, he gave me very funny and dumb explanation. He told me that the curry is not off, it taste different because we do not cook our curries in traditional Indian style instead of that we cook our curries in British style and we use British spices and condiments in our curries. That's why it taste different. Well to that smart manager, anyone who has eaten curries in his life before can easily tell whether the food is off or not. I paid the whole bill and we left the place without eating our meal and decided never to come back.

The only Indian restaurant you'll ever need. I've been going for 10 years. In my opinion it is head and shoulders above anything else. Always consistent. There are too many highlights to mention - but I'll settle for quality. Top quality, I've never found anywhere else that serves such well cut chicken. Keep it up. I'll be the one greedily, but appreciatively enjoying every perfectly balanced mouthful...

Hands down the best restaurant in Wellington! My partner and I both work in hospitality and so can be rather critical when eating out but we were both blown away with the exceptional service, flawless food and fantastic atmosphere. We were in passing of Great India at 9pm on a Sunday night and were shocked to find they would happily seat us for dinner. The gentleman who greeted us (the owners son) was the perfect host, not only catering to us with 5* service but reassuring us throughout the evening to take our time and offering us more courses as the night proceeded. We did not plan on eating in the restaurant, just happened to stumble across on our way home. We both have found our new favourite hesitant and can not wait to return with our family and friends. Thank you Great India for an unforgettable experience and superb hospitality. Your floor and kitchen staff are professional and exceeded all expectations. Definitely set a high bar in Wellington not just for Indian resultants but for all bars and restaurants. Thanks again, we will be back.

What sets this Indian restaurant apart is the service! The service is just impeccable they go over and above to make sure you are attended too and the hand towels at the end are a lovely touch.<br/><br/>The food is really delicious too especially the coconut rice. The restaurant offers a great place to catch up for lunch or a lovely place for a romantic meal in the evening. It is a little more expensive in the evenings than the others in the region but I think it is worth it if you are looking for something a little more special.

This is the best Indian restaurant in Wellington. <br/>Awesome attentive service.<br/>We have been a few times and have had a selection of the entrees which are all delicious.<br/>We usually only get one curry to share, we have had the chicken korma and the Chicken Tikka Marsala. Both are full of flavor.<br/>The fruit and nut naan is a standout and my favorite. Partner loves the cheese naan!

Could not fault the food, loved the fish at the entrance. The service was very polite and efficient (not what I'm used to in Auckland) and very cheap $12 lunch. Will definitely be back

In my opinion, one of NZ's best Indian restaurants. The service, especially by the manager, is extremely polite and professional. <br/>I usually order the Goan pork curry, which is something a bit different and special. The mango lassi is also superb.<br/>The prices are on the high side, but it's worth it for the quality and level of service.

I'm from the uk and love great curry. I have been hugely disappointed with the standard of curry houses in New Zealand, it is what I miss about home the most. Great India is the only Indian restaurant in Wellington I would recommend, the food is delicious and authentic. I am hugely surprised by some of the poor reviews on here, if you love great Indian food you'll enjoy this place.

I've been here 2 or 3 times and each time the experience was the same. Different waiters, confused about our orders, annoying 'suggestive' selling and the prices not matching the taste.<br/>I like to give places a chance as everyone has an off day but 3 strikes and yr out.<br/>Better food, service &amp; prices up in Cuba!<br/>Goodbye Great India.

I've been to this restaurant a number of times and never been disappointed. They have an extensive menu with lots of dishes you will never have never have tried before and they are all amazing. The service is top class. A+.

Too expensive for curry, we were in a large group 20-25, but it took 2.5 hours to get food(10.30pm at night) which is a bit substandard<br/><br/>The hot towels were a bit of a wnk factor too...<br/><br/>Overall food was average, there are much better indian places round Wellington

I went to Great India for dinner and was not too impressed to be honest.<br/><br/>Same things as others have mentioned, different waiters, who did not seem to be consistent, they kept trying to up sell us, which I never like. We ordered a diet coke and a regular and they were not sure which was which.<br/><br/>The menu did not have enough about the items. On the curry I chose it said it was 'chef's sauce'. A bit more description would have led to me choosing something else. The vegetables also tasted like they had been frozen, it sure wasn't fresh. The curry was just a bit bland, and it wasn't great. The Naan wasn't generous and was nothing special. <br/><br/>The biggest shock was the bill. BEWARE. $50 for two, including a coke each. Rip-off. The rice was $7 for both of us and came in a tiny bowl. I never like getting shared rice, as I think you get less, and there wasn't enough for us. I couldn't believe it. They charged $18.50 for a butter chicken then $3.50 for the rice, someone is making a steal off this business as hardly anyone gets curry without rice. <br/><br/>All in all, disappointing. You can get cheaper &amp; better up Cuba.

Great food! you may not have the best expirience in terms of service if you go during a rush time...they are short on space and stafffood :)<br/><br/>In my xexpirience better to visit for lunch on weekdays...<br/><br/>also they do not take reservations..I have tried a couple of times and been VERY politely refused ;) heck! I keep trying

Good menu and tasty food, the service wasn't great, we got served by 3 different waiters but i think they were just a bit short staffed that night.<br/>Would definitely grab a take-away from there.

My experience with Great India was not very good. <br/>First I was informed I couldn't use my entertainment card for takeaways, which is fine, but I think that should be stated in the entertainment book somewhere or on the website. The website did tell me I wasn't able to use it at lunch but there was no mention of takeaways.<br/>I ordered two vegetarian dishes. The names are so vague that I ordered two with exactly the same sauce. The channa masala has no mention of what kind of sauce it is only saying chickpeas and potatoes and the vegetable curry is vegetables in a curry sauce. They were all equally vague with sauce options described as 'gravy', 'special sauce' or 'cooked in spices'. I suppose that should have been a sign that it wasn't going to be great.<br/>Finally i ordered both medium and they were very mild. <br/>Overall a disappointing meal and I will probably not go back.

Great meal - spice just right and a proper vindaloo with the lamb tender - will return

Great India is in my opinion one of the two best Indian restaurants in Wellington (the other being Indus on Tinakori Road).<br/>This longstanding and award winning restaurant is perhaps best known for its particularly good service and attentive Maitre D’ Rakesh. However, with a strong ‘flavour’ of the English Midlands, they also have a extensive menu with a great range of starters and main courses; my particular favourites are the Seekh Kebab, Chicken Tikka, Chicken Jalferzi and the Murgh Biryani although there are plenty of other dishes for the more adventurous (including squid and venison) as well as vegetarians; they also have a particularly good range of Indian beers and their Bombay Gins are to die for. Equally suitable for singles, couples and business dinners, their large round tables are also great for group nights out.<br/>Is it expensive? No but as ever it depends on what exactly you’re comparing it with and whether you object to paying for rice; it’s probably the lowest cost restaurant that I go to and their $10 lunch must be the best value offering in the city. <br/>The refurbished bathrooms are also a great improvement.

the food and service are great, but the additional costs are too high

It was a Friday night and we decided to have a late night curry after watching the Phoenix disappointingly draw their home game at the cake-tin, we selected the Great India as our destination for dinner as we knew they'd welcome some new customers at 9:45pm. After the obligatory question they ask every time of whether we wanted their overpriced pompadoms and dips, we selected two entrees -- Seekh Kebab and Chicken Tikka. The kebab was a small serving in my opinion. The mint yoghurt that accompanied them that was made with dried mint rather than fresh. We had a couple of Kingfisher Strongs, again charged the highest price in town at $15 a bottle. For the main course we had Chicken Jalfrezi, Methi Gosht (lamb pieces cooked with fenugreek leaves), Gehtu Masala (lamb in a tandoori masala sauce) and Murgh Chuttri (chicken cooked with capsicum and mushrooms). All were bahut acha (very good). The Jalfrezi was the hottest and the heat was just right. The Gehtu Masala was another great find -- the lamb was tender and the sauce exquisite. I appreciated that all the sauces were distinctly different, when sometimes it seems like the restaurants around town are using the same sauce base across a range of dishes. The breads were good, and we even went crazy and spent the $7.50 for a Pershwari Naan - which is a large sized serving that justifies the equally large price tag. The plain steamed rice, at $3.50 per serve, is a joke. We got one bowl and shared it around the four of us. We were very satisfied at the end of the meal, having ordered just the right amount of food, with no leftovers. As a bonus we used the Entertainment Card and got a $25 discount off the meal. The environment was good. We had the place to ourselves for the last half of the meal, but didn’t feel rushed. While we completed our meal the two cooks left, so we passed on our gratitude to them for the tasty late night dinner they had prepared for us. The maitre d' was a good chap too, but he wasn’t the usual one (Rakesh) that runs the show. Marking their rating down was the inevitable additional costs that they try to incorporate in the bill, such as rice at $3.50 a bowl and the expensive pompadum+dips question that still haunts me from when I was financially burnt the last time I was naive enough to have them.

This is one restaurant that does not compromise on taste. It is the closest to the true taste of Indian food that I have found so far in Wellington. Excellent quantity of servings and the atmosphere is great. Service is generally prompt and always cordial. A great place to eat.

I had a lovely meal here and the lunch time take away is spot on too, good service and excellent food.
Caffeinated Weka
A good all-round meal. Lovely food with great service. Quite costly for an Indian restaurant (having to pay $3.50 for each serving of rice, which doesn't come with the meal), so the 25% discount that the Entertainment Book offers is appreciated.
