Review Wagamama Wellington - Wellington

Zesty Stingray
Absolutely delicious food and fantastic staff. Can get very busy on a Friday or Saturday night but food always comes out piping hot! Decent sized portions as well as a beautiful view of the waterfront and hills. A great place for a catch up, date or family dinner :)

Although service was a bit slow at times (understandable due to how busy it was), the food I had here was really enjoyable! Their ramen bowls are massive, and there's a wide selection of drinks, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, to start off or wash down the meal. I'll definitely be back here!

Not bad....little bit disappointed with the food. Chicken overcooked, but fantastic favours in the soup itself. Beers was tasty...nothing on draught tho. Worth checking out. The view of the harbour is outstanding. The photo posted is not quite the same view...but gives you a flavour of what you may be able to see...particularly if you sit near the windows during sunset. Hope that helps.

Been here a few times and food and service is always good. This time squid, prawns, baked fish and chicken washed down with warm saki. Highly recommended

Food was tasty and filling. The food is traditional ramen-type restaurant food and as a bonus the menu has nice little explanations what the dish is like. The place looks very clean and orderly. You can see the cooks in action. The service was quick, welcoming and friendly. The location is by the beautiful Wellington quayside and the place has a good view to the ocean. I definitely recommend Wagamama.
Light Begets Light
Took a chance on a busy school holiday Sunday night without a booking, they managed to seat us (4) after a few minute wait. An extremely very popular place, large communal tables & bench seating. A loud space, but ok. Not somewhere for an intimate romantic date, but great for large parties, though book ahead to ensure you get a table. Food is Japanese and other Asian styles fused together, rather delicious. Vegan friendly with many options. The food comes out as prepared to ensure it's hot and the flavours & spices are optimum at serving. We enjoyed the Bang Bang Cauliflower, it wasnt deepfried (like some places serve), sweet & spicy. I had a Yasai Itame, a noodle, tofu & vegetable green lemongrass coconut curry. It was labelled as spicy, but I got no spice, that was ok though, I added the sauce from the Bang Bang Cauli to it, cause that's what I do! My family ate meat dishes, they looked good. A great place to keep vegans & meat eaters happy. Staff were very friendly and helpful for us first time Wagamama diners. Highly recommend. Priced affordably and large portions. Our family of four, with 2 teens, 3 entrees, 3 mains, 4 drinks & a side of rice ~NZD117.00.

Really good food. A little expensive but totally worth it. Most dishes can feed 2 peckish people or 1 really really hungry one

First time diner at Wagamama - was given a menu by the friendly waitress and I noticed that, although all of the dishes looked divine, there was nothing listed as Gluten Free. I asked the waitress if they catered to those on gluten free diets and much to my surprise she pulled out a dedicated gluten free menu! I couldn't believe it - a decent amount of dishes to choose from too, rather than the usual limited options you tend to get at restaurants. After much deliberation I decided on Edamame as a starter, followed by the Chicken Teriyaki Raisu as a main. The portions were HUGE (another plus!). Great dining atmosphere, friendly service (shout out to the awesome Scottish waitress) and a menu that caters to those on special diets. The best dining experience I've had in a long while...thank you so much Wagamama.

Incredibly well located with great view from the harbor. Kids menu well served and presentable. My donburi was tasteful but need more attention on the visual presentation. This helps the customer to open the apetite. Almost got 5 stars.

Great Location, Nice food and fast service

Not mind blowing, but good assortment of Asian cuisines done in Kiwi way against a delicious waterfront view. Add the tea stained egg to whatever you get...
Alan Woods
Easy family friendly dining. It's our go to when the kids are hungry and we are in town. Staff are always friendly and welcoming.

Very friendly staff and great food, highly recommend.

Food was good. Ambience was great. The order came quickly

Tasty, fast Japanese meals served in a warm modern setting. Restaurant has concrete floors and long wooden tables, with open kitchen. Classy cafeteria vibes. Staff are attentive and wait times are reasonable despite being always busy. Food quality is consistently high. Maybe a tad on the expensive side, for what you are getting, but you won’t feel disappointed. Extremely good value if you have a voucher. Good drinks range. Excellent for groups. Beautiful waterfront location.

My first visit to a Wagamama outlet and I will never return. It didn’t live up to the hype at all.

I got the chilli squid for starters which was really nice!

For mains I got the Yaki Soba (chicken and prawn) and it was an absolute disappointment. It lacked flavour and salt, the noodles were clumpy, over cooked and quite oily. The noodles had about 3 small prawns and 4-5 tiny pieces of chicken and these were the only things I ate from the entire dish. I’d prefer instant noodles or noodles from my local takeaway shop for half the price!!!

The Coke had too much ice and lacked fizz.

Really good customer service though and I did feed this back to the waitress who offered to replace the noodles but I was already put off and didn’t want to waste anymore food.

Two stars for the chilly squid and customer service.
Master Diner
Use to be a great restaurant to come to. Today ..... not so good. Dishes lacked finesse and flavor and very small portion sizes for the price. Service very slow and quite haphazard. We had finished our meals and the drinks came out. For a $9 fruit juice - do me a favor and fill it up.
The place was packed only because no one else wanted to open on New Years Day. I don’t think I will be returning to Wagamama (in Wellington, at least)

The chicken raisukaree is a must! I have it most of the times I come here and it’s always perfect. The only problem I have is that often the food will come out at different times if you’re in a group.
Eheng Chin
Awesome waiters and great service just the food was absolutely trash like instant noodles would have tasted better. I complained about the rice and they returned with equally trash rice.

Nice food, staff were nice but you'd get 5 stars from me if only the staff were just a but more welcoming and friendlier....OK service but I felt as if I were just another annoying customer, staff looked tired as if they just didn't want to be there.
I found a hair in my food...manager was very apologetic and resolved the problem by getting me another fresh meal which was a nice and appropriate solution.
Sheryl
WAGAMAMA IS ******* AMAZING!!!!!
I recommend the Raisukaree! It’s one of the best coconut curries I have ever tried!!!

Believe it or not but the best cocktail I’ve ever had In my life is from Wagamama too! Make sure you try the falling water cocktail!

I cannot wait to be back!

Staff were ok but the food very bland and average not worth the price. Disappointed with my dish I asked for duck and there was no duck. Waste of $25 it was literally a bowl of rice. I could make this at home for free. I don’t really recommend this place and if you’re after authentic Asian food don’t come here it’s very disappointing.
Roger Fitzpatrick
I ordered a duck dish. There was one small piece of duck in the meal and five tiny pieces smaller than half the size of my little fingernail. $25 for what was basically a rice and vegetable meal. Absolutely disgraceful and uncomplainable because you don't find out until you have finished the meal.
Br3nxo
Chicken pad Thai is amazing! I need to come back here and try their other dishes! Lovely restaurant layout and great atmosphere, wine is priced well too.
Lebloop
The food was alright, nothing particularly special. I've been to other Wagamamas that were way better. The service was alright but not great either.
Pam
Points for presentation, portion size and service. Atmosphere a bit loud and was hot the day we ate there. Messed up one order, giving udon instead of ramen noodles, but solid tasting overall. Not astounding but good.
Jason Campbell
I went with my wife and 2 children.
The food was good, and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The waitress even made a plan after my son made a combo order and realized that there wasn’t ginger beer on the kids’ menu.

Wagamama es siempre sinónimo de comer comida china y asiática en general de la mejor calidad. Su servicio es muy bueno, los lo ales son lindos y, lo que no es poco, limpios. Y lo mejor es la alta calidad de sus platos, todos dan para compartir.
Absolutely delicious. I got the yasai coconut broth ramen. It had house made rice noodles, mushroom, sweet potato, onions, chilli and tofu. It had a smoky but sweet flavour which was very very delicious and would’ve gone well with a nice glass of white wine. The portion was really quite big. It did take a little while to come out but was worth the wait. The restaurant is a very loud place with music and and open kitchen.
Camellia
I went with my family, the service was great friendly smile. The drink i got (coke) had too much ice and the food took a long time to serve but that was because there was a few people there so I understand. When my Wagamama ramen came out everything looked great but the meat was sloppy when I picked it up with my chopsticks it kind of fell apart (pork), others bits( I don't know the name of) were hard. The portions were too small so we all had to get second which was more money!! However the desert was good, I had the Wagamama mud cake. I recommend that. My family seamed to enjoy their food more then I did so it might have just been me.

I can a few years ago with my friends the food was delicious, so I'll give it another try some time in the future.

What I like about this place, is that it's open late. Not really late but enough that you can rock on in at 9pm and have your food in 20mins or less. My partner and I arrived after a movie, he'd never been therefore I ordered for him. He's a 3 veg 1 meat non adventurous, kind of guy. The safest option for someone like this is probably the cha han donburi which he thoroughly enjoyed. He also ordered edamame. I had chicken and prawn teppanyaki and a side of squid. Both were yum. I've had curries from here before but never had much luck with the spices, I ask for mild, I get hot mild! Not worth risking it! Only thing is, I hate the seats. Wish I could move them. Maybe they're uncomfortable so you don't hang around too long!

No problems with service, the staff were lovely and service was prompt but the food was, to say it politely, not very good. We had the wagamama ramen (second photo) and the chicken+prawn yaki soba teppanyaki (third photo). The ramen was flavourless, what little flavours it had didn’t mesh well together, all of the ingredients felt low quality and cheap. The teppanyaki had very little meat in it which was disappointing and the meat present was low quality. The dish as a whole was quite bland, and it was served at a very tepid temperature which was unpleasant. Highlight of our visit was the dark and stormy (first photo) we ordered, although still it had no balance to it, and could’ve done with more lime :/ Disappointing overall, and definitely not worth the money we paid.

Very good choice for big groups! Food is good, desserts are also good.. Our food did take a while but it was a busy night so it was understandable.. I was very pleased to realize that even though our food did take a while, our whole table got served within 2 minutes, so there was no awkward periods of half the people on the table eating while the rest are watching! also I found there was a good variety of food. from noodles, to soups, to stir fries, to curries! My favorite dishes are the yaki soba noodles and the katsu chicken depending on wether I feel like a curry or noodles! big portions of tasty comfort food! ❤️

It was hard to book a table for 14 on a Friday night in Wellington close to the WOW venue. It was a prime site for a meal right on the waterfront. We were lucky to have arrived at 5:30pm as the queue went around the corner when we were seated. We ordered a range of plates and had varying ratings from -3 to 7 out of 10 scale. We had four pad thais which were rated 4s and 6s. We felt they were bland. Yuki sorba was rated in a negative number by our 10 year old! duck gyozas which was hard but we ate them all. Koumi lamb was delicious and was the boulgogi and ramen. I would think three times before coming back.

My dining experience at Wagamama was awesome. I ordered teriyaki chicken and chilli squid, I have never and will never order those dishes from any other restaurants ever since. I loved it so much. will be going back this after. one little thing I didn't like was the size of the dessert, it was too pricey for its size. maybe lower the price or increase the size of dessert?
Lydia
I went there for my 15th birthday and it was pretty packed but but they still managed to pull of keeping a bunch of teenage girls happy! I ordered the chicken ramen and made the broth spicy, which was $20 and some pork dumplings for $11. To be honest the dumplings were a bit too pricy as you only got 5 but they tasted amazing! The chicken ramen was really nice too and the portions were huge! I also have a nut allergy so when I told them they were very helpful and made sure it was all good. It took about half an hour before they came to take out order and an hour before we got any food but the place was packed and very popular so i suggest bring some friends to while away the time but its a great restaurant and I will definitely come again 😁

Me and my partner were really looking forward to coming here however it was quite disappointing. The food was well overpriced for what we received. We had ordered the pork belly steam bun and it really had no pork belly, it was more of a Panko crusted apple bun than a pork belly as there was only a very thin slice and you could not even taste it over the large apple slice. Our mains were nice however I don't think it was worth the price we got the katsu chicken curry which is pretty average no heat to the curry and not much flavour and also the short rib ramen the broth was nice but very hard to eat the rib as it did not fall off the bone and it was very very fatty and tough. The gyozas are so very hard and could not tell the difference between steamed and fried either. Very disappointed in the food. Also the way things came out was so confusing I got my main before anything else and I tried to wait for my partner to get his but my food was going cold and I was hungry so by the time I ate it all the gyozas came out and then my partners main and then the steamed buns and then our drinks. Very very unorganised it seemed and very weird that it came out like that. Wagamama is quite overrated in my opinion and I will not be returning. Servers were very nice though and I love the casualness of the environment. But it's doesn't get past the overpriced poor food.

Staff always seem to cope super well considering how busy this restaurant often gets. They're always very friendly and get the food out very quickly. The chicken katsu curry from here is probably my favourite thing in the entire world. Highly recommend
Bakers Corner
Perhaps one of the most overrated places in Wellington.

I ordered an $18 Fried rice from here, which they said they would happily cater to a vegan dish. It came out with corn, peas and rice. Disappointed.

We were also disappointed to see the usual chicken fried rice my cousin ordered only had an addition of chicken to hers.

Shocking. Overpriced. Overrated.

The Katsu curry is always a win! Really friendly staff, and reasonable service time considering how packed it gets. Lovely location too, great for a walk along the harbor afterwards.

Terrible experience. 20 minutes wait for a prebooked table, which they tried to rectify with 3 starters for a table of 11 adults. Poor, slow service, we had to ask for everything we should have had from the start. We didn't get water, cutlery was given only after asking after our entrees arrived. Food was not up to the usual standard. One set of pork gyoza was returned because it was still raw and the ramen was bland.
Rebecca
Always a decent meal - I don't deviate much and get the salt and pepper squid and Asian greens. Always yummy. The juices are also pretty good. Good value for money.
Eat Places
This place is good because you know what your getting, however the food is pretty bland and the night we went it turned up cold. Prices are ok for what your getting, if you really like Asian food I would recommend going somewhere else. This really is a quick meal place.

I dined here for dinner with my fiancé and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We arrived without a booking and were seated within 5 minutes of arriving. We ordered the edamame, crumbed prawns and pork gyoza to share between us. All came out within 10 minutes of ordering and were delicious and flavoursome. For our main we had the steak teriyaki soba teppanyaki and the duck yakitori pancakes. Both meals were extremely tasty and filling. It was a really busy evening and the restaurant was pretty packed which unfortunately meant the service was a bit slow at times. Overall though the tasty food at a reasonable price more than made up for it. We will be back!

I recently dined here with my finance' and we really enjoyed our meal. We had three entree dishes to share and a main each. The food was bought out really quick and hot and had a heap of flavour. It was really busy though which meant the service was a bit slow at times. Overall though we will definitely be back.
Hannah
Love it here! So good and the food is always consistent. I don't love that it comes out at different times, however I get that it's the 'thing' there and everything else is fantastic 😊
Rachael Trudgeon
I used to think this place was good but in the last year it has become very average. Especially if you go during the day and see them bagging up the ingredients for the different dishes, taking away any thought of freshness!! Definitely has learner cooks that do repeatable basic cooking in the kitchen. Has lost its vibe in Welly and is really disappointing now.

First time I have been to wagamamas in Wellington. I went with my wife and our daughter. We had to wait for 30 minutes as there are no bookings for tables with less than 6 people. The service was fine and given you are packed in like sardines the privacy is fine. The ambiance at other restaurants I have been to is better. However the food was outstanding.
Sofia
Came here on a very busy Saturday night! There was a huge queue at the door and it was clearly communicated that there would be a half hour wait for a table of 5, the British girl on the door in the black top was lovely and friendly and was clearly dealing with a lot. We were eventually seated and were seen within a few minutes for some drinks and sides! We shared a few things like kara age and squid which were great then went on to mains. I was not expecting authenticity and the food was great, simple and delicious. Great staff who were clearly working hard but still had time for a chat and a laugh. Will definitely be here again, but maybe on a less busy night for me and my friends !
Tiny Sized Foodie
Overrated food and service. I came with a party of around 15 and we even made a reservation beforehand. We were supposed to be seated at 7pm but we didn't get seated till around 7.15pm. We waited for about 20 minutes before anybody even came to take our orders. Not even nibbles or plain water was served to us during the wait. By the time all the food arrived at my table, it was already 8pm. Having waited for 1 hour before I could get to eat, naturally I had high expectations of the food and seeing how the restaurant was packed. I was extremely disappointed to the point that eating the food made me even angrier than the 1 hour wait. I ordered their Wagamama Ramen. Broth was bland despite it being "miso broth". I can't taste the miso or basically any taste at all. I believe the problem is, unlike all other legit japanese restaurants that use pork bone broth as the broth base, Wagamama simply mixed water and miso together to create their "miso broth". The broth tasted flatter than my table top. Not even the variety of seafood, barbequed pork and chicken could save it. What really takes the cake was, the mussel was not even debearded properly. Am I suppose to eat the beard as seaweed or ? At $22 a bowl, this is really not worth it at all. I don't even think this is worth $15. I can cook much better than this.

Then comes my friend's teriyaki donburi. I didn't taste the donburi but what's up with the kimchi? So giving 1 tablespoon of kimchi on the side makes it a jap-korean fusion dish? We finished the 1 tablespoon of kimchi before the food for the rest at our table arrived (because we were just so famished from the 1 hr wait). We asked if we could have more kimchi and you wanted to charge us for a mere 1 tablespoon of kimchi? It annoys me when food establishments that are already charging above average prices for their mains, are so calculative with giving just a tiny bit more sides and here, we are only talking about 1 tablespoon. This is ridiculous.

This place seems to want to position itself as a "fusion" restaurant but honestly, please perfect your dishes in its individual style first before even attempting fusion. The only thing japanese about the ramen is the presence of the noodles. The Korean barbequed pork? Nothing korean about it. I've had years of experience making korean food and there's really nothing korean about the pork. I've been to Japan and eaten numerous ramen too, so I know the food at Wagamama is not even close to anything japanese.

In summary, this will be the first and last time I go to Wagamama. You should be ashamed when a non-professional cook like me can cook better than what you have to offer.
Jimon007
Overrated and over priced place for imitated Japanese dishes. I lived in Japan and had so many sushi. I was there because my friend invited me here. Was just between OK to so so. If I have to pay, I will go somewhere. Will not recommend. Don't be fooled by signage and interior. You have been warned.
David
This gem is always bustling and for good reason, fast service and tasty food. The dumplings were plump and juicy with a nice crispy base. Ramen was excellent, pork still juicy and a nicely soft boiled egg. Reasonably priced and decent sized meals. Recommend if looking for a quick, tasty meal in a buzzing atmosphere.

Exemplary service and wonderful food. My partner asked for something different to the advertised menu which when presented was not quite what she was expecting. ..the staff were so helpful, friendly and prompt in putting things right. Incredible.

I've been here a few times and have never left feeling disappointed. I've found the staff to be friendly and helpful, and the food usually delivered quickly. Lots of options too! I usually get #41, I absolutely love it. Friends and family have always enjoyed their dishes too, and each time I've been it has been busy. Would definite recommend on a night out!

Took an acquaintance from Colombia with me for dinner; this is one of my fav fusion restaurants in Welly. He was impressed with the ambiance, the setting, the location, and the food -- and rightly so! I ordered for their new menu, Lamb koumi (lamb and mushrooms marinated in ginger, garlic, and lemongrass, stir fried in broccoli, courgettes, chilies, red onions, garlic, ginger, mint, basil and coriander in chili oil served with steamed jasmine rice and garnished with lime.). Such a delectable meal! Staff were great, and the cashier from Indonesia actually had some foreign languages up his sleeves which was a delight! It's one of Welly's finest!

A little update: I took my guests from San Diego, California here for lunch yesterday, and they loved the place and the food. I had Wagamama Ramen and it was satisfying with all the different ingredients complementing each other. I love the wakame's delicate flavour.

Lovely facilities, beautiful modern building and a crazy gorgeous view over Lambton Harbour As for the food, the menu is good with pricing at fairly affordable. Whenever my Asian bro from Dunedin comes up we always have a few jugs of sake and stumble along the waterfront on the way home.

Waitstaff are lovely as well.
Mrs Puddingcake
Honestly- not that impressed.
Food was good but service just not ok. I don't go often enough to know if this is normal or not.
We had to wait ages to be seated. It took a really long time for anyone to come and get our order. No water on our table despite water being taken to other tables. We ordered a whole bunch of sides to share which turned up first, with no plates. We asked for plates, got a super weird look and then got told there were no clean plates so she would see what she could do. Just weird!
Mains turned up which were mostly delicious, but just kind of disappointing things like a tiny amount of chicken and salmon in the salads, and a crazy amount of chilli on another dish.
Also a really grumpy looking server came over and almost accusingly told us he had the "mixed greens" we ordered, and when we looked at him blankly he got kind of mad until the table next to us claimed the dish in question! Lol!
The gyoza were good, ramen and the mushroom rice ball things were next level amazing, so maybe they were just having a bad day.
Personally will prob give it a miss next time. Sorry!

We were keen to have an early dinner at Wagamama as we were fond of it before it closed down in Perth. I had the Salmon ramen while my darling had the chicken Chu chee. The kumara chips were good but I wish the quantity was a bit more. Overall it was alright.
Bill
Great spot, lovely staff. But to be honest it's rushed, undercooked pork ribs. Rubbery pink not what I was looking for. Sauce was nice but you can't enjoy under cooked ribs sorry but na. Katsu chicken, sauce nice enough but not the best I have had by a long shot. Small chicken breast Panko style and sticky rice, sorry but it was al dente rice, under cooked also rushed. and not nice. If you can't cook rice well.......shame. Looked great but wasn't good eating. Not the same experience I had in Christchurch and London Wagga. I give it a 2 for location and nice crew. Work on the product. Too rushed.

Having the pork ribs and the chicken udon noodles thingy and deep fried calamari and sea-food noodles soup which were absolutely delicious! Have been coming here quite often ! Love the view and the customer service there :)

Wagamama is always a good and go to food restaurant for me. I really enjoy the chilly squid and it's a must try for spicy food lovers. I also enjoy the prawn dishes and the serving is quite plentiful. Service is good, area is clean and waiting time is minimal to none. This place is located just by the waterfront so has great views. For dessert my friend and I shared the 3 scoop ice-cream and the coconut flavor is delicious. I recently also tried the Mud Cake which was quite delicious also.

I decided to give Wagamama another go after a not-so-enjoyable visit a couple of years ago. We ordered deep fried squid for entree which was fresh but a very small serving for the price. The ramen is delicious and flavoursome despite the noodles not being made fresh. The bowl is huge! The only negative about the ramen is that it was served warm not hot. Dessert (apple wontons) sounded much better on the menu but arrived on the table looking and tasting a tad uninspired.
Ivy
I came here with my friends.A good looking but tastes is a little bit salty :( 😪😪😪😪
Leah Sikorski
Had dinner here tonight. Started off with the chicken dumplings and the deep fried chicken pieces. Small portions for the price and really just average. We also ordered the promotional wine that was being advertised (a favorite of mine) and were incredibly disappointed to discover it was room temperature (white wine). When we brought this to the waitress' attention, the manager came over and apologised personally (apparently the fridge had been accidentally turned off) and was quick to offer alternatives. The mains were delicious and were large in size for new Zealand standards. I had the firecracker chicken and my friend ordered the teriyaki beef soba. Summary: definitely recommend for the environment (communal eating style) and the mains. Wouldn't bother with the appetizer.

Have previously dined at Wagamama years ago when it had first opened ... in fact, I am pretty sure I did a review on it via Menu Mania, so I am wondering what's happened to that review since the move to Zomato??

Wagamama is a popular spot right on the waterfront. Parking is plentiful but expect to pay through the nose regardless of the time of day - or you could park on the street and walk after 6pm (when I believe most street parking is free).

It's bench style setting inside with the seats fixed in place, so if you are are more physically endowed overall, you may find sitting in the seats a challenge. That is, if you manage to get into the seating at all. The tables are set higher than you would probably find in most restaurants, but that isn't a bad thing. Food is contemporary Asian with strong Japanese influences - from traditional to Asian Fusion.

There is a kid menu which is on the underside of the paper table mat, but you don't know it's there unless someone tells you that it's there. So despite having our 2yo with us, nobody cared to mention the kid's menu on the underside at any point.

We had a large group of 12 people and were split across 2 tables side by side. This type of seating isn't as conducive to conversation as a large round table with a lazy susan, but you make do with what you have. Because it was busy it was also very, very noisy.

I ordered the edamame beans with salt, pork dumplings and chicken katsu curry (some of the dumplings were for my son). The food came out as it was cooked and did come out very quickly. There was no pattern to entrees or even everyone getting their meals at once - so you have to be prepared to start eating before other's have received their food.

There isn't much to edamame beans ... the rock salt was generally on the top, the pork dumplings weren't anything to rave about and the katsu curry, was beautiful but again nothing that left me absolutely stunned.

What you can expect to get from Wagamama is pretty decent service, average to high-average pricing and food that generally tastes and looks good.

A popular stop for the lunch crowd around the waterfront, Wagamama was busy as usual when I came in for a weekday lunch.

I had already made a reservation and mentioned that to the waiter who was seating me. He said he had to check but didn't return until a good 5 minutes had passed. Not sure why it took so long, but got to my table in the end and ordered a Wagamama ramen.

It didn't take too long to arrive and I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the serving. It was big and chock full of ingredients like prawn, mussels, char siu, and grilled chicken. The noodles were chewy and not soggy, the broth was light and refreshing, and the char siu had the perfect ratio of meat to fat.

Overall it was a really filling meal, but my only complaint would be that the prices are seriously wallet-unfriendly. I'd imagine that this would only be a once-in-a-blue-moon stop for me, seeing that there are other restaurants around the area with more affordable prices.

Showstopper: Big servings, great view of the waterfront

Overall grade: B-

Not good enough. We managed to beat the Friday dinner crowd for an early meal and ordered the Teriyaki Salmon with Udon noodles and the Chicken Pad Thai (no prawns requested). The Udon and the salmon had never even seen the sight of a hot griddle as the menu promised. Boiled boiled boiled. The taste was interesting, with a hint of spice but the lack of fried smokiness was a huge disappointment. The Pad Thai was an even bigger disaster. It was dry and tasteless. Not an ounce of flavour. With much difficulty we found 4 pieces of chicken that were dry and fibrous. No extra chicken was added to replace the prawns. Very dissapointed customers.

Great ambience, a lovely location with easy parking. Unfortunately the food did not live up to it. The cost was far too high for something that could be had at several other joints around town for 1/3 of the price. The service was trying to be something it wasn't and although appreciated, I found it pesky at times.

for me wagamama is just ok, used a voucher to come here. shared a starter of the squid was just ok, I ordered the prawn firecracker and felt it was quite bland. my friend has the pad thai and she enjoyed it. nice view and interior but pricey for what it is.

Never got to experience the food because after 20 minutes of being alternatelyignored and shunted to the other side of the restaurant we had had enough of the chaos that is their queuing system and went to eat elsewhere.

I went in at lunchtime with my 4 and 2 year old children. It is a bright and clean and had a high chair for the 2 year old. The waitress serving us was helpful and the kids got pencils for colouring. I ordered the fire cracker chicken and ordered the kids ramen and chicken noodle dishes from the kids menu. I ended up having to get mine take away as some how one of the kids meals ended up spicy and my kids were screaming down the restaurant. It was so busy and no one was helping we just had to pay for the meals the kids didn't eat and get out as everyone was staring.

Wagamama is a very popular spot on Wellington waterfront that boasts a healthy spin on South East Asian cuisine. It’s contemporary decor and friendly service make for a great first impression when you arrive. The food here definitely has a healthy spin on it, which I really appreciate. The Thai green chicken curry I had for main was very fragrant, without the heaviness that you get from most curries. However, I thought the ratio of capsicum to chicken let the dish down. Capsicum, unless really caramelised (which this wasn’t) has quite a sharp flavour and I found it overpowered the dish. The entrees we had weren’t very good at all. We ordered the spicy squid and the dumplings. Quite honestly, the texture of both dishes was that of cardboard/stale popcorn. I appreciate that they have gone to quite a bit of effort to make things healthier but in this case, the lack of any fat, oil, salt, has made these dishes completely void of flavour. The waitress who served us was friendly and attentive. When we were half way through paying, a manager came over and said to the girl at the counter “I’ll do this, I know you get nervous about payments.” Then she said to us “Sorry, she gets nervous.” Firstly, the girl at the counter was doing just fine. And secondly, a manager shouldn’t be putting a staff member down in front of customers, it’s a really bad look. Overall, I did enjoy dinning at Wagamana. This place has the foundation to be something great, but slight improvements need to be made.

Yummmmmm everything's fresh and the staff are so very welcoming. They really look after you and the food is fresh and tasty. Dumplings are divine with beautiful fresh fillings. Been a few times and it has been consistently great.

Seriously over priced. Definitely would not recommend; food was average at best. For one ramen and one stater it was 50$ so I expected something good. What I got I would've expected to pay 20 or less. Very disappointing small portion of meat with slimey noodles and dry doughy dumplings.

Wagamama's menu is written up really well and everything sounds amazing, as someone who's allergic to rice and gluten free I had the miso salad. There was maybe 50-100g of salmon on a bed of lettuce with mayonnaise. It tasted good... But I don't really like salads that are pure rabbit food. Miso soup arrived half full with one piece of tofu. Everyone enjoyed their food, however for the price and simplicity of the menu I wouldn't go back often.

I've been here once with my boyfriend to celebrate our anniversary and we really liked the place. Our waiter was super nice and the food was delicious. Although we were not very happy with the service in general since the food took so long. We understood the place was full, but people who came after got served before us.

What a disappointment. Dinner in Wellington with hubby we didn't book anywhere so popped in here. Service was bad took ages to get our drinks then hubby got his meal and had nearly finished when mine came. I commented that he had almost finished to which I was told ..... We bring the meals when they're ready. Interesting given tables of four and six were all being served at the same time. As our water and alcohol glasses were empty I asked if we could order more drinks? I ordered chilli chicken salad it was nice hubbys koumi was ok supposed to be chill but wasn't evident. Sorry wagamama Wellington you failed to impress!!!' Lucky we weren't asked how our meals were when we left 😩

I have to say, I was really looking forward to going here as I'd heard it was really good, but was a little disappointed. We went in a large group and because the food was so staggered we basically didn't eat together. I ordered the chicken and prawn pad Thai which had 4 prawns and 3 pieces of chicken.. For $19.80 A little bit of a let down. The saving grace was the friendly service from Ryan and the banana Katsu which was delicious!!! May have enjoyed more if there wasn't so many of us so the food wasn't so staggered.

Had a great experience here a few nights ago before World of WearableArts. The place was really busy despite being a Wednesday - there was a queue waiting for seats! But the food came quite quickly (although not all at once).
I had the Chicken Katsu Curry which was great, and a decent size - Wagamama gives great value for money. It could have had a bit more spice though.
We also had a side of Garlic and Chilli Edameme Beans which were absolutely delicious! The flavour was great with a good kick of chilli - made up for the lack of it in the main meal.
Overall it was a prompt, delicious, atmospheric meal. Definitely the best Wagamama outlet I have been to so far.
The location and Japanese cuisine brought me to try Wagamama. Unfortunately the food didn't meet my expectations of a high-end Asian restaurant. For Asian food you expect deep and accentuated flavours. The dishes were only okay, quite bland which was dissapointing. You can find much better gyoza for the same price in Wellington. Not sure if I'll be returning to Wagamama.
EpiCurious
A little pricey for what you get but otherwise fun. The pork gyoza were a little dry and over fried but the Itame was great, as is the ramen.

This was the second time in as many weeks we headed here. The first time was one of those rare treats when the husband and I were off work together and with the almost guilty glee of two kids absconding from school we managed to get a car park nearby and scuttled in on a Monday lunch time. It was surprisingly busy, a nice hum for the start of the week. We were ushered to a table for two. Nowhere for the standard issue Wellington coat to go but I was glad of something over my knees. The waiter was a quirky hipster with an energetic yet relaxed and friendly approach. I was glad Mr C had been before as he was familiar with the protocols and soon we were settled in. He ordered the zesty fruit drink name forgotten with lime cucumber mint and apple from which I drank far too large a sip to taste and it was delicious. Marital tension averted, just, I turned to my Pinot Gris. Only one selection per varietal but I found it a pleasing match with the food to follow. My teriyaki beef on noodles followed soon, with an enthusiastic flourish from the waiter. Nicely seared medium rare beef on tasty noodles, bok choy et al and I was a happy girl.

The 11 year old budding foodie was jealous when we confessed our lunch time jaunt so at a loose end last weekend while we vacated the house to escape an exam study crazed teenager rampaging at every peep from her tip toeing family, we decided to call in on the way to Moore Wilson's (the only shop in Wellington the whole family agrees on). She was delighted and settled at one of the large communal tables which adds a nice communal atmosphere, where we happily perused the menu. I'm terribly boring and chose the same teriyaki beef. The husband went for the chicken ramen perhaps influenced by the biting Wellington wind outside. Being slightly neophobic Miss G settled for a noodle dish off the kids' menu.

Having had the bar raised so high last time it all fell a little flat. The beef and noodles was adequate but grisly meat took a little of the pleasure out of it as did the undercooked greens. But again the flavour was good. Mr C's ramen wore thin as he persisted. Miss was happy with the novelty of noodles instead of the usual fried children's restaurant fare and the little dish of teriyaki sauce but on sneaking a portion of mine preferred the adult version with its more robust flavours and complexity compared to the dry noodles on offer.

Overall a good experience but suffered a little from lack of consistency.

Been here plenty of times. Very large, modern restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Always enjoy my meal here. Pretty decent pricing mains around $20 and starters $10. We had the prawn and chicken gyoza, pad Thai and teriyaki soba this time! All very nice. Would recommend the pad Thai! The teriyaki soba was nice but had a bit too much sauce for my liking.

Been here a few times. Awesome food every time. Great if you don't like waiting long as the food comes out really quickly. Good value for money, I never leave feeling hungry. Only had a dessert once but was really yummy. Will continue to go back.

My first visit to Wagamama and ordered Teriyaki raisu and Chicken katsu curry. The beef teriyaki raisu was really really sweet 😐 but the chicken katsu curry tasted good as it was quite spicy (I like spicy food). The service was good as the waiters served us pretty fast. Somehow, I think that the food are pretty pricey as I can find cheaper place that serve pretty similar food.

A good system but I'm sure this place is better in London. Quick and easy but there are better Asian places in Wellington (although they probably don't have as good a view).

My family and I are now frequent wagamama eaters! And it is always delicious and fresh, with lovely friendly wait staff. I can't even pick a favourite dish!
Sally
Great place which always delivers. Last time we went there we were seated very quickly, in peak lunch time the place was quite busy. Given crayons and paper to keep the littlest amused. Drinks came out very fast, as did our orders. We had Chicken Tama Rice, which potentially could have had more chicken in it, but was good all the same. The second dish was Beef Teriyaku Raisu with no complaints here.

I can't fault this place for beautiful flavours, fresh food, great service and good value- also excellent for families with children- by far my fave place to eat.
Had an awesome time at Wagamama! Service was great and efficient and the food came out really quickly + it was absolutely delicious! Would have liked to have had my own water carafe as myself and my partner are are weak with chili and I felt like a bother to keep asking for a refill.

Went here tonight on a busy Saturday night with 22 people for my daughters 21st. Service was fantastic. ice cold water appeared straight away. catered for the children immediately. food ordered correctly and appeared in a timely manner...my daughters first...food was presented perfectly and all of 22 of us thought it was varied and delicious...and im an experienced chef...Ryan prepared our cake we had brought and even sung my girl happy birthday...prices were around $17-$19 for a main...awesome views over the harbour...highly recommend this for people who like Japanese fusion food, don't mind the minimal decor and want a reasonably priced family meal.

Overall, i am happy with wagamama. Ordered a spicy beef on rice (i forgot the name and i cant find it on the menu here). $19.20 but worth it because it tasted sooo good. We manage to get a 2 seats table so it is quite comfortable for us. Love the view! The staffs were nice (They asked how our food was and even came to refill our drinks). But heads up, the customer might need to remember their table number to make the payment process easier (not really a big deal though)
Siobhan
Average food. Average service. Overpriced for what it is and with an abundance of great Asian restaurants in Wellington that are actually well priced you should go somewhere else. Toilets are always lacking in attention.

Heard decent reviews for this place. Decided to try it out with a group of friends. We had booked a table in advanced for around 6:30pm. When we got there, there was a queue and the place seemed a bit busy. We were told we had to wait 5-10 mins, despite having a booking in place.

When we finally ordered, it took around 15-20 minutes before something came out. I had received an order well in advanced of my other friends. A few more orders came out 10-15 minutes later. And the last order came out 25 minutes after I got my order. I didn't want to be rude and start eating first... so by the time all our orders collectively arrived, my food had gone from hot to warm/cold.

The food was actually pretty tasty, however, the reflection of this rating is based on the poor service we received.

Was so looking forward to return visit. However it didn't happen. The process in queuing for a table was ridiculous and this was prior to 6pm! Yes it was busy but there were heaps of free tables. There did not appear to be any system in place. Even worse was the total lack of communication. After a twenty minute wait in a line that did not seem to be going anywhere other than the toilets, we left. Disappointed. I'm sure the food would have been as excellent as previously.

Went here for the second time this year with a group (about 6-8 people) service was great and food delicious, however both times the timing of food was confused and well spaced out.

The waiter suggested we got 'sides' if we were hungry as there was a bit of a wait in the kitchen, that's fine, most of us ordered sides thinking it would come like an entree; before the main meal. This however was not the case with the first dish to the table being a main. Some sides came before the main some with and one after the main meal delivery.
Service was good and asked us if we wanted desserts, by the time everyone else had finished eating their dessert mine arrived and the bill was delivered soon after my dessert.

Aside from this (which was half expected from last time) it was a pleasant dining experience.

Every time I have been, Wagamamas never disappoints. The food is so yummy and a really good price. The service is generally really good, only complaint is that it can take a long time to be seated even when there a lots of empty tables. But the fantastic food and location definitely make up for that.

20.12.13 7e Wagamama:
Enjoyable dining experience – I had yasai katsu curry which was very tasty & my partner had chicken & prawn pad-thai. Very good pleasant service. Would recommend
Serena
Will never go there again. tasteless food (even I have put in so much chilly oil & soya sauce). I ordered a ramen (I didn't read the description while I order). it came out as udon noodle. I ask the staff, he told me its ramen because its soup. I nearly got chock for that answer!!
Sharon Livingston
Food is yum, service very friendly, little over priced but overall nice casual relaxed dining experience

Will only ever go to Wagamama when they have a coupon deal with a discount as it is way overpriced for what it is.

The food is OK even though it doesn't really represent Japanese but a fusion of Asian food. There are far better Asian meals to be had elsewhere.

Service is hit and miss, I think this restaurant appeals to a younger hip crowd with tats et al. When the young uber cool cashier asked me about how the service was and then proceeded to throw my receipt at me I nearly gagged.
Jole
Fantastic service, great food and a pleasant environment. I would highly recommend this establishment. The staff were quick to tend to our needs and food was quick to come out (although I must say it wasn't overly busy). Meals were served hot and were cooked to perfection. The flavours and service were worth the price paid.

Thanks to Jetstar and the late arrival of one of our guests we had to change our dining time- staff were very good about this when i phoned to add another 45 minutes to our original booking time.

However, like Diana's review post, our original online booking using this site wasn't received by them!

Our young waiter (Charlie?) was lovely and offered lots of advice and recommendations on the menu.

The meals we ordered were fresh and flavorsome and our party of 7 were all satisfied although we thought our various meat servings - everything from lamb, beef and seafood -were scant

The dumpling entrees are so very yummy and my carnivorous always- hungry teen son devoured the chicken wings with gusto

We thought it odd that they served reilsing and pinot gris in champagne flutes!
Ron Beernink
A tasteless chuck-it all together Asian (con)fusion mix. That's how I can best describe the glub of udong noodles that I had for my main. It had an over the top mix of many ingredients but without any the fresh special taste that I experienced when I first started going to Wagamama. The last couple of times it has been mediocre at best.

The over the top 'hi de hi campers' behavior of the staff doesn't do it for me either. Being greeted with a "How are you, team?!" by a pimple nosed kid and having the bill settled by a "Wicked!" exclamation every time I said something, is something I'd expect at an American fast food chain, but don't really need here; particularly on a quiet Monday night.

Certainly far from wicked, and sorry team, but won't be back..

With a pleasant view of the waterfront and harbour, Wagamama offers a nice, informal dining environment.

Drinks and entrees were served fairly promptly, which seems to be in conflict of other previous reviews on this site.
The main courses took around 15 minutes to arrive: a commendable timeframe for such a busy establishment.

The quality of the food was of a high standard. The temperature of the meals was perfect, and flavour profiles were well blended with each other. Appropriate side dishes (which were recommended by the wait staff) also went well with the courses.

Coffee was also made to a good standard, and served within 6 minutes of ordering (acceptable for a restaurant as a "dessert" beverage).
Vanessa
We originally got on here and read the reviews which weren't crash hot, my husband suggested people probably don't write as many good reviews as they do bad so we decided to go anyway, our first dining experience here as a family. The food and service were outstanding, a really nice setting with the boats going past, you can't go wrong here, the food was tasty, fresh and healthy, and we felt like it was very good value for money! The girls had their sauce on the side, good idea in case it's too spicy! Will definitely go back! Yum yum!
Harrison Faumuina
I am absolutely appalled with the service at Wagamama. After having a bland, lukewarm main (that was most definitely not worth the $25 one must pay to eat this *authentic* Japanese cuisine). We decided to get dessert. How long must you wait for a dessert you may be asking yourself? 30 minutes?, 40 minutes? Don't be silly! The answer is over two hours! But even still, after 2 hours a waiter comes to notify us that he had forgotten to put our dessert order through. Thus resulting in a lovely stop to McDonald's on the way home. I shall not be dining there again and do not recommend it to anyone else.

Came here on Monday night and the place was bustling. We (group of 6) were seated promptly but it took a while for someone to come and take our order. Then we were advised that they had run out of chicken due to an event that was on last week. How can you run out of chicken? So half of our table had to ask to see the menus again to make another choice. Drinks orders were not taken on arrival and when they were taken we asked for tap water which never arrived. We had to wait ages for our food. I wasn't a huge fan of Wagamama in the first place and after last night I'll think twice about going back in a hurry.
Michael
The food is always good here .... if you actually get served and then eventually your meal. It was a quiet Monday night, 4 tables max. It took over an hour to get my food from the time I sat down.

Only one waiter on the floor who seemed at best disinterested. He did not even bother to see the kitchen or make an apology when I asked where my meal was. The rest of our table had finished eating by the time it had arrived. Not good for a bowl of noodles and soup.

Disappointing.

Shared long table setup in a large cafeteria type restaurant including an open kitchen. Great location on the waterfront in the Meridian building. Food is somewhat pricey for what you receive, big menu with lots of options some not traditional but appealing to kiwi tastes. Might be better off going to a cheap and cheerful Chinese place than a chain like this.
Jaz Ford
My partner and I and some Friends of ours have visited this place 4 times in the past few months, the food is some of the best we have ever tasted, service is really good as well and the young waiter has a really good memory for his age.

Highly recommended.
Rosemary Young
Expensive for what it is... Be warned, your clothes will come out smelling of the food.

Wide range of food on offer however if you have never been it is not very authentic japanese.

Service was pretty slow, even had to make an effort to get a waitor/waitress to come over to fill our cups of tea and take our orders...

This is one of the places to impress others with waterfront views. That is unfortunately where the great experience ends. Depending on the time of day, it will be impossible finding a table and when you do, the seats are designed uncomfortably to get you out as soon as possible.

The food is a mostly 'non-authentic' Japanese style which is not necessarily bad as it would be a safer bet for bringing Western or undecided guests to dine with you. The open kitchen is a unique setting, so long as you are willing dry clean all your suits after a lunch business visit if you end up with a table close enough.

I find the style of service should be better suited in a food court given the price you pay for the meals, you'd expect proper cutlery and their staff to serve from the right and take from the left from one waiter whenever possible. Not a chance.

There is so much going on (once you make past the deafening noise from other diners) it is a wonder if anyone would try to service you from underneath. While writing your chosen order and drinks in front of you is somewhat unique to Wagamama branches, I find it especially rude to have someone reach out and scribble somewhat indescribable characters of the English alphabet. I would be more forgiving if it was written in Japanese kanji characters, then again, this approach would not be accepted in most Asian cultures. Worse, most people end up thinking they had Japanese cuisine upon leaving
Geoff Curson
Loved the food. Good options for vegetarians. Interesting range of flavours and well presented. The service was good and friendly. It was a bit cold by the window where we sat but we will definitely go again.

We visited this restaurant last week of August. We are not great fan of Japanese cuisine but we enjoyed our meal at Wagamama. The katsu curry, teriaki salad and dumplings were very tasty. It was very busy and clean place. Nice sea view, great food, great service. Everything was excellent. We can not wait to come back there.
