Review Taste Of India - Wellington

Cassidy “Quinn” Smith
Came by as my partner has mentioned in passing they'd heard good things about the onion bhaji. We got vegetarian curries, garlic naan and the aforementioned onion bhaji and it was so good. Perfect pick up for a finals night of studies. Wait time is naturally on the longer side due to the popularity but so worth it, but if you are in a time rush then totally call ahead. The people working are all so lovely and the food is amazing!

Vegetarian options! Recently I ordered their Aloo Gobi, Palak Paneer, Onion Kulcha, and a Roti. My partner and I loved the Palak Panner. The paneer was so soft! The gravy was creamier than we’ve had before but very delicate. I think there are some sweet spices in the dish, which offers a lovely flavour difference to the breads! The Aloo Gobi was from their warming cabinet so the spice level is already set. It was a good warning medium. A really decent Aloo Gobi. It has a tomato masala with it making it slightly wet but it’s not soupy! Great flavour. All the breads are homemade and freshly baked in the tandoor. The Kulcha was made with their soft na’an dough. Fresh onions baked into the bread with spices, sensational. The roti was a different wholemeal dough. It baked amazingly and offered a nuttier-bread to enjoy with the dishes. Rice needs to be ordered separately. This was our first visit here and we’ll definitely it’ll go again! So lovely to have this place open again.

Takeaway only. This is the best Indian food in Wellington. They’re known for their Chicken Tikka but I’ve eaten most of the menu and everything is excellent. Their curries are cooked with whole spices, they are rich and creamy, and the meat is always tender. The naans are fresh, crisp and hearty. Honestly I love this place, it’s a gem.
Tessa Deacle
I spent 6 weeks in India, but this was the best curry I’ve ever had. Extremely flavourful and delicious, it tasted fresh and homemade in all the best ways. Fabulous little takeaway place and I will definitely be back! Thank you for the wonderful food!

Prior reviews are legit. We eat Indian food on a regular basis and this place will rank high on our list. And I can’t say enough about the naan bread - fantastic!
Ben & Catherine
Food is always so delicious, and it's good value as you get a lot of curry for your money. Also, their breads are so tasty and cooked fresh in the tandoor to order. Lovely place for takeout, couldn't recommend enough
Alex H
Amazing chicken curries and their garlic naan from the tandoori is so delicious too. Everything takes a bit longer than they say but the wait is well worth it.
Sam Illing
Delicious butter chicken and chicken korma. Since they have some pre-made options I think they should have a $5 sample pack where you can try a teaspoon of each so you know what their flavours are like

Unbelievably authentic and tasty Indian food. Chicken tikka and garlic naan were especially awesome and better than many places in India. We ordered over the phone and the friendly staff waited until we arrived to make our naans so they were crazy fresh when we ate them a few minutes later. So thoughtful!

I ordered mutton seekh kebab The taste of lemon is dominant need to taste and fell lamb Chicken vindaloo was good I think breads need to cook more from the sides Being a chef myself I could recognise few things in food Overall Food is good.... This is my 2nd time .....

Most authentic Indian in Wellington. Highly recommend the cheese naan! Have sampled both vege and meat options and keep coming back for more 🤤
Pravin Patel
all good .. only one thing to change... reduce sugar in gravy to half and reduce salt as well.. we had malai cofta... it was like sugar syrup... if you reduce it to less than half will be perfect... thank you please take this suggestion seriously... you will do even better

Best Indian I have ever had. Tika chicken incredible taste!!!

I had a butter chicken, cheese garlic naan and mango lassi. It was delicious and made fresh. The naan was so good made fresh in the tandoori oven. Nicest curry I’ve had in Wellington! I love that it’s a family small business too! My favourite - would highly recommend.

One of the best Butter Chicken dishes I've ever had. I came back here many times during my visit to Wellington. Should not be missed by any fan of Indian food, however they don't have room for much other than take away so be aware.
Jason Yan
Food actually taste good and looks great too! Reason for 2 stars is that when I ordered my curry it didn’t come with rice or I didn’t get my rice. So i was just stuck with the curry itself and had to cook the rice myself. Would go back there again and see how it goes next time and hope that I get rice next time.

Omg!!!😍The best chicken tikkas we’ve ever had in NZ so far!!!🫡Freshly taken out of the tandoor and served with fresh garlic naan is to die far!!!🥹The aroma of the chicken tikka was so utterly amazing that we just couldn’t wait to take it home and just enjoyed it then and there itself! 🫢🙈A highly recommended one! 💯

Super good!! I've tried a lot of Indian food around the city here is my number one worth the price and wait time
Don Duck
There are better Indian IN wellington
Over charging and bad counter service
ONe size fits all no matter what ordered
Rogan JOsh is the meal
Avoid at all costs
Mehul Patel
Amazing food. Love the chicken tikka.
Francisco Bustamante
One of the best Indians in Welly. Try the Chicken Tikka and you won't be disappointed. Chicken Korma is another favourite, creamy sauce and full of chicken. Naan are great too, the have a Tadoori oven right there so you can see when they are cooking them.
James Cook
Taste of India is the best Indian takeaway in the world because I love balti chicken, it has a High Quality taste with the garlic naan.
John Seed
The butter chicken is so good with the creamy taste and the lamb briyani was so nice
Shweta Borkar
I ordered lamb seekh kebab but there was too much salt. I didn't expect it to be salty. The chicken tikka was good though. I felt I wasted my money in case of lamb kebab
Came here 2 years ago when I came to this city, had Indian food for the first time. And now I’m back here, I couldn’t wait to have this Indian food again, THE BEST IVE EVER HAD! Cannot find any other places in Auckland that is better than this. Strongly recommended! 👍👍
Parag. Walavalkar
Amazing Boneless tandoori just love it. Also great chicken curries. Balti chicken is worth having. Dissapointing factor you need to order and pay for rice seperately it does not come with curry you order. Had ordered Chicken Vindaloo Indian hot but still did not feel that hot as expected. This place certainly has room for improvement. Service is nothing out of the box but decent. As its a takeaway joint please call and order your food or you'd need to wait for atleast 15 mins.
Ronak Katira
Best curry in the city no fuss takeaway. Don’t go on the looks for the place its worth every dollar spend. Menu is short but curries are worth trying and specially fresh chicken tiika
Crumpet King
Upon recommendation from other reviews I thought I'd check this takeaway joint out. And by golly it lives up to expectation! Ordered the Dahl makhani and Chicken tikka. The chicken tikka is fantastic, look forward to trying the saagwala next!
Vivek
Good takeway place for foodies who search late night food. Both chicken tikka and mutton kebab were nicely cooked and i must say it was THE BEST in NZ looking at the portion size and cooking style.. ( bit more salty tho but it happens sometimes ).

Reasonably priced place.
Jonny
The food is pretty darn great but ordering is always a bit of a trial and you feel unwanted in the store most of the time.

Going to keep buying from them because the food has always been great.
Jess Ashton
best indian in wellington hands down! you have to try the cheese naan def a fave. Also love the butter chicken- I dont eat alot of chicken but if you do they give you alot of it! also the chicken or lamb korma are delish too!
Melwyn Pereira
The joint was playing Punjabi music and had north-Indians at the counter, so I chuckled when I saw Vindaloo on the menu. The tandoori skewers and breads looked fine and I expect them to be good enough. Given they are rated so highly, I decided to test how good they could make a biryani, which is again not a Punjabi recipe.

As expected, it was an abomination. There was surely plenty of meat but none of it was tender. The rice was mushy. A biryani this was not; it was a steamed red (excessive food color) curry base along with the rice.

Stick to the Punjabi stuff here and it's good value for money but the rest is not authentic and a little dishonest in the preparation.

Awesomest Indian food in Welly! I just had a Chicken Tikka and Cheese Naan - it was absolutely amazing! That charr grilled taste with the proper proper spices and melts in my mouth. That chicken is so moist and succulent just like me lol. My Saturday is now complete and I'm ready to roll! 😆🥝🇳🇿

Great food and quality plus quantity ... should increase there timings a bit but overall great work thx
The best is the chicken and lamb biryani
Grace Tulloch
Best Indian I have ever had, the chicken masala is amazing!!! Cool that the tandoori oven is out front! Good service. Definitely try this place!
Shaily Uppal
Hands down, the best Indian place in Wellington. Period.
But it is a take away place. That should not stop you from tasting the yum curries. The 10$ meals are great for budget friendly dinners.
Shyamak Patel
The tiny shop which serves amazing Indian food without all the bells and whistles. Straight to the point, they know what're doing. Order. Take it home. Enjoy the food with a good movie.
Phillip Bönerfëld
Do not be fooled by the humble storefront, this place pumps out the best curry in wellington. The tandoor oven is mesmerising and the curries are packed full of flavour. Chicken tikka is the best chicken you will ever eat. Highly recommend.

My "go-to" place in Wellington when I'm in the mood for an Indian food fix. Having their Chicken Tikka Vindaloo for dinner makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside after having my fill (not just because of the spice...but its being a hearty and proper meal). Great with the usual basmati rice; but strongly suggest you pair it with a Garlic Naan and/or an Onion Kulcha.

Would have given it a perfect score if it was not for the fact that you will need to wait for a bit before you get your meal. Average lead time is usually 30 mins.

On the other hand, there is always a line outside the door which shows how much people love eating from this place. All good things come to those who wait.

I'm never disappointed whenever I order the butter chicken and naan bread from here.
This place has ruined any other curry places in Wellington for me!
Jordan
Best curry in wellington, such nice authentic flavours and a must try if you are in Wellington.
Garlic naan was very tasty and perfectly cooked.
Will be back for sure!

This place is a legend. I used to go there 20 years ago then left Wellington. When I came back to welly I found the place was still there. They only do take away. Their Naan is fantastic as they bake it in front of you. Tandoori chicken... Yummy and all the menus are great. The amount is very generous. In fact i am craving as i write this so will have it on this Friday.
Paul
Authentic as, food is great especially the tandoor chicken and naan breads, no fancy service here and You might have to wait 30 mins but it's worth it.

Recently moved to Wellington, and looking for an Indian place we enjoy. This isn't easy, not so much because of choice, as there are heaps to choose from, more to do with our taste, and previous experience.
This is the best we have tried so far. The meal was delicious and the Riata the best we have ever tried.
It is a 30m min drive from our home to this place to get takeaways, but we will do it again!
The only issue is their idea of how long a meal takes to cook. Give them atleast10-15 minutes longer than they say especially on Friday/Sat night as there will new a lot of people waiting at this unassuming but yummy family run takeaway

If you're ever visiting Wellington NZ and in need of a damn good curry, A Taste of India is by far the best there is to offer. Not a 'sit-down' Indian Restaurant, but a walk in and pick up type of outlet. They do tend to get busy, but the wait is often worth it, if not always. They have very delicious curries, and are amazingly tasty and moorish. There seems to be that distinct tandoori smoked flavour embedded into the curries and I've found this to be a huge point of difference in comparison to other Wellington curry outlets. You won't regret ordering from these guys. Fantastic breads also!!!
Andrea Gregor
Definitely the best curry in Wellington. Don't let the underwhelming look of the shop out you off, the curry is amazing. The Saagwala curries are my favourite
Hari Kirupananther
Just amazing. I highly recommend everything they make! Everything that comes out of the tandoori is just magical. Can't throw enough praises their way!
Team Thomas
Rang an order through was told about half an hour.... got there and with lines out the door I made my way to the counter. .. was told another ten to fifteen. .. ok no probs. Waiting, waiting... waaaaiiiiitttting.... asked if it was coming and a guy in the queue said the place was always like this... I said it must be good if you keep coming back he said yep it is... waiting... wwwaaaiting... almost an hour from ordering over the phone I asked the guy if it was coming ... lo and behold two mins later he had put the order together... after 55 mins of waiting it better be good. Tasted the garlic naan, good and hot, fluffy, garlicky! Awesome. Butter chicken next, whoa sweet... mmm smokey chicken ok... chicken tikka..... moist, smokey decent flavour, onto chicken korma.... looks a bit dark for a korma... um thats pretty lamby tasting chicken... oh hang on its lamb madras... righto wrong order back to the shop.
I explained that I opened and tasted the lamb, so did the wife but he just said sorry bout that, put it with the others being served and gave me a chicken korma.... I let him know again we had both eaten from that dish, he said its ok... EW. Chicken korma was ok, bit sweet but still nice enough. You have to pay for rice separately here just FYI. But still reasonably priced. If you got a lamb madras with lamb missing tonight its cause my wife and I ate it and then they served it to you... sorry about that!! I might have it again, still reckon curry heaven in newtown is the best in welly.

Best Indian takeaways in Wellington. I have worked my way through the menu and will be starting again from number 1. If I had to choose one dish, I'd order the Chicken Tikka. The smell coming out of the tandoori oven when the chicken is cooking can only be described as heavenly. I sometimes avoid walking past so I don't cave and get some for a pre dinner snack.
Ross Bird
Best curry in Wellington hands down, very generous portions of meat and the perfect amount of spice for each dish. The Garlic naan is also amazing, value is great and service is always fast. I would recommend calling ahead to place in order as it can get quite busy on a Saturday night.
Em
This curry is boss , the real deal
Jasmine Sandhu
I have been here quite a few time and I cannot get enough of this place! Must try dish is the chicken tikka and garlic naan. All the curries are delicious and are made fresh. There is always a long queue here so I suggest calling and ordering first.
Ishaan Kochhar
Amazing Indian food. The food is authentic and amazing. If you looking for authentic food and don't mind having at home this the place you should go for. The chicken tikka just melted in my mouth. The food they offer is much better the more pricy options available just down the road.
Mind The Crumbs
Hands down the best Indian in Wellington! Don't be deceived by its facade, this little hole in the wall Indian is outstanding.

The butter chicken is amazing, not overly sweet and doesn't leave that fatty after taste that usual butter chicken does. Their chicken sagwala and masala also needs a mention. The chicken dishes are made with a generous helping of tandoori chicken which always succulent and tender.

I love that you watch them freshly made your naan in their clay oven at the front!

This is literally the only place I will get curry from now on!

Sarah Reynolds #challenge
Erin Moffatt
The best Indian in Wellington by far! When you see this little hole in the wall you may think "gross" not a very nice looking place to get food! Trust me.. try it!!! And you must try the cheese naan so yummy!!!
Raymond Ferguson
Don't judge a book by its cover, despite looking fairly dodgy this place is my favourite Indian takeaway in the city. Always had a good experience with the food from here. Downside is the wait time if you go at the weekend.
Jason Martin
Best butter chicken and cheese naans in Wellington by a mile!!
Josh
Personally I find this to be the best Indian in Wellington. Even though it's only takeaway, the freshly made naan bread is fantastic and the flavour in their curries is phenomenal. I'm yet to find a better lamb biryani. The only downfall is that you can't eat there.
Rhodri Williams
As far as I'm concerned this is the best Indian in wellington.. If you can get what you were after on the menu, which is kind of basic. But everything they have there is delicious, a bit more selection on their menu would go a long way mind
Shauna Kauri
We got an assortment of different dishes and all of them were amazing, the most authentic Indian in the city! I wish I could have this every day!
Tony Valentic
By far the best Indian take away in wgtn. But, do not order the butter chicken it's very sweet almost to the point of sickly.
Peter Snowdon
Good food. Awful service.
Samantha Ryan
Chicken Masala was good, but was surprised that it wasn't made clear when ordering take away that rice was not included. Cheesey naan recommended
Wilson Chau
It doesn't look like much at first, a simple, humble Indian takeaway shop, but the food here is fantastic - highly affordable but very rich and satisfying curries that qualify this place as my favourite Indian eatery in Wellington. The butter chicken is worth trying but so are the other chicken and lamb dishes on the menu (some are quite spicy!) The naan breads are huge for the price - I highly recommend the cheese naan.

A shame they haven't yet turned this into a restaurant. But then again it's admirable that this place sticks to its roots, unlike some Indian/Asian restaurants that expand too much or too quickly, and has consistently produced great food.

By far d best Indian fud I hav had from any Indian restaurant in Wellington, nz.i had a Lamb Biriyani. It was neither over cooked nor extra sweet. It was just perfect. If they cud improve their customer service den it wud b really awesome
Saif
Really amazing food. Love the chicken tikka which is their signature dish. Curry is also pretty good. The naan is amazing. Must try really. It's not cheap but for me it's worth it! The young guy is very friendly and good to deal with
Tim Wright
I hadn't been here before but have been to just about all Indian restaurants in Wellington. Some friends recommended it so I checked it out and it was great. The Chicken Masala and Aloo Gobi were generous and delicious, the chicken dish comprised of succulent portions of Tandoori chicken. It was great to watch the naan bread being cooked right before my eyes in the clay oven. The garlic naan was large and fresh with plenty of garlic. I would highly recommend going here. The only caveat to be aware of is that they are takeaway only and I open after 5:30pm most days ( except Monday I think where they are closed ).
Paul Rees (Eleven Eleven)
I am a curry lover but had never been to Taste of India before.
I guess I was ever so slightly put off by the appearance from the outside, but wow, the food blew me away.
They made it super-hot per my request and kept so much taste in the dish, I was surprised.
Delightfully flavoursome! The best curry I have ever had!
Can't wait to go back.
FrequentDiner
By far the best Indian food in Wellington. It is absolutely delicious every time. The chicken tandoori is really moist and the Naan bread amazing and fluffy. Watching the naan breads being made also increases to the charm. I really recommend the vegetarian options. If you have not tried this place yet, it is a must.
Penny
This has to be the best Indian in Wellington.
Best dishes are chicken masala and garlic naan.
It's only take-away and you may have to wait on the Cambridge Terrace for your order and watch them cook away in the tandori oven, but it's not making any promises other than fantastic food.
Robby Palackal
Ordered the tandoori chicken with a naan! It was delicious and the chicken was so succulent! Definitely recommend this! It was recommended by a friend and definitely worth it. The portions are quite large as well and I was easily able to have it as a meal with my wife.
Brian Gunning
We had the Mali Kofta and the Chicken Masala. They were generous portions and full of flavour. We also had a Cheese nann and a Garlic nann. I watched them make the nanns which was a treat. This is by far the best curry place in wellington, hands down!!! Good value also! Our new favourite.
Sara Lewis
Very generous portions, Rogan Josh is fantastic and a lot of pieces of chicken in the butter chicken dish. Food is delicious full of flavour. I would say this is the best Indian in Wellington (it's a takeaway but excellent standard) Garlic naan is nice too..
Dee
best place to get indian food when we are want takeaways. good serve size too. and cheesy naan are extra cheesy.
