The house specialty of meats (BBQ pork, roast pork, duck) and rice (with usual condiments) is what you're hankering then, in Wellington, this is the place. The other (typical Chinese) offerings on the menu are 'ok' but in my opinion other local restaurants do those better. Nothing flash about the ambiance but that's not what HK BBQ is about. Service was certainly slower than usual on out most recent visit, but that hasn't been the norm on previous trips.

Great value for money. Food is reasonably good across the range, from Chinese BBQ meats to a la carte dishes, and there's always a range of fresh Asian vegetables they can stir fry for you which won't be on the menu, which you can simply ask. But you have to walk the extra 20 metres across Kent Terrace from Courtenay Place, which might be too far for some people. On a busy day, they can be understaffed so service will be slower than normal then. They also make excellent bubble tea, try the purple taro bubble tea if you can't decide what to choose.

I know the place looks messy and a wee bit disorganized but they work hard for the money.. great food here BBQ meats on point.. noodle soups are great as are their pork wontons soup. Great tasting and good value ..I took photo after I had eaten some pork !!!...

The food here is delicious and affordable. Service is hit and miss but forgive this! The beef fried rice noodles, dumplings, duck fried rice and any roast meat plates are amazing standout dishes

Bought a group on coupon $25 dinner for 2 people: corn soup and a delicious half peking duck with salad. Recommend: The roast duck is the best no fat at all and full of meat.

Meat cooked fresh in the morning just after they open is always the best time to eat their roasted meats. As the day goes by it will still taste good but not nearly as juicy and crisp.

If you thinking about eating here or even getting takeaways DON'T. This place doesn't even deserve a 1. I ordered fried rice takeaway and pork buns. Firstly, the fried rice was so small for $12.50. They say they only do one size? Definitely not worth it, the chinese takeout in my area does much much bigger portions for the same price. What I got was a small container with a bit of shredded chicken :( Ontop of that I ordered 2 pork buns, they cost $3 each and there was so little filling and more dough than meat inside. To make matters worse, I only got 1 bun in the takeout even though I paid for 2. When I called them the lady said I'd get a refund and she never gave me my money back. The place also looks dirty and unorganized. Overpriced and bad quality. Would not go here ever again!

I wouldn’t actually give them even a 1 for yesterday’s saga . We’ve been here a couple of times and the servings are always generous & decent pricing however yesterday when we went here to grab some takeaways & when I’d started eating my chicken there were still feathers on them which i understand could happen at times so I was slightly put off but let it slide then a few bites into my rice I found what is shown in my photograph. Disgusted We immediately rang the restaurant to which we spoke to 3 people claiming not to be able to speak English , who then gave me another number to call the manager . This was Called, confirmed it was the person who I was referred to, then she hung up on me . My partner rang up a few minutes later , apologies were given etc etc . Long story short when my partner went back to show them the food and get a refund when he’d walked in whoever he’d spoke to acted like they didn’t speak English then as soon as my partner brought up health and safety inspectors he magically spoke perfect English . So if anyone wants some extra garnishing of insects by all means head here !

Arguably the best Chinese food place in Wellington. Their Duck Fried Rice has no rivals and is perfectly flavoured. Has the most reasonably priced food and relaxed service.

Probably doesn’t even deserve a 1 to be honest. Went in on a Saturday night and only had one group of BYO people and another couple. Kinda quiet for a Saturday night! Place was really echoey with no music so was really difficult and awkward to have a conversation. Service was a 0/10. No eye contact with us and no manners. Ordered the Chicken Chow Mein which was less in price than what my boyfriend ordered but 2x the size. Tasted as if the noodles hadn’t been separated properly and they were burnt. Veggies and chicken seemed as if they were all fried together then drizzled with bottled sauce. Only $11.50 but probably worth $5. Extremely hot (temperature wise) and no flavour. Boyfriend ordered the lemon chicken which came with no rice or veggies. Just fried chicken with some lemon sauce for I think $18. Place had no ambience and servers didn’t interact well with the customers. Really not worth going to, a lot of other better places in Wellington for the same type of food and money.

Came here for char siu faan to test against kc cafe. Quite lean meat and standard size in comparison. Slightly cheaper but the restaurant is fairly empty so very quiet to sit in.

Went here with my partner to use our grabone coupon. Booked in advance as we thought it might be busy and the roast duck may take awhile for them to cook. Turned up at 6:30pm and received our food at 7:40pm.. The service is one of the worst I've ever had and it's the reason I downloaded this app. They only had one waiter and she was obviously overwhelmed. One Chef cooking for several tables.. On the weekend. Had to go get us water after 20 minutes of waiting. Only give it a 1.5 because the Duck and Soup tastes lovely.

Had a terrible experience here. Came here for lunch and ordered the Peking duck banquet to eat in. Every time some one came in to order something to takeaway the guy serving stopped our order to prepare theirs. The food wasn't worth the wait. The duck was greasy and the pancakes were dry. Would never eat here again.

Came here for dinner once as I was craving for roast pork. Was very disappointed by the pork that was not roasted properly, cutlery was dirty and only one lady working so she forgot about our drinks as well.

We will never come to this restaurant again!! We ordered roast pork on rice for me and my partner ordered eggplants and salted fish. my food arrived first after waited for all while and we slowly ate and shared our first food but pity my partner she was still waiting for hers one to arrive. After around 1 hour we decided to gave up of waiting and move to another restaurant to KC.... we will never recommend this restaurant to others. Very poor in their service and the roast pork.. just okay..

given them 1.5 because their food is good.... I have been here 3 times, all 3 times the food has been great - no complaints what so-ever. ALL 3 VISITS I have received the worst service I have had anywhere, ever. I'm talking 30-40 minutes for the first dish of lemon chicken to come out, followed by a 20minute wait to get the RICE to eat with it - (After the first 2 times I made sure to let them know I would like the rice served with the rest of the food, like anywhere else in the world) we then received out last dish 15 minutes afterwards. The cutlery arrived after asking for it twice. Table next to us was complaining because of their delay and also ours - they also waited 15 minutes after finishing for a doggy bag, which they were made to deal with themselves. do not go here if you are looking for a nice night out - you will be frustrated and ready for bed as soon as you arrive. Takeaway may be alright but I would maybe call ahead and turn up 20 minutes late if you aint keen to sit around and look at other frustrated patrons.

We came here for lunch and had hotpot. The soup was tasteless, the service was so bad. They took so long to bring out the steamboat even it was so quiet. The waitress look so angry for nothing. Never ever come back again

A family fave for feeding the troops without breaking the bank. The Salt and Pepper Squid, Combination Bean Curd and Szechuan Fish Fillets are favourites. They go down a treat every time. We always leave with the feeling 'oh-we-ate-too-much'. They get busy on the weekends and it gets really noisy- but who cares? Once the food comes on the table, it's no-holds-barred dining!

Dined here with 2 of my friends. The triple meat platter was good, but some pork haven't been heated enough so I felt like eating old stock. I had Chow Twein BBQ pork, which was delicious, however, same problem happened which my dish when the noodles were not cooked well enough. We all think the our dishes were somehow a little salty and would require a lot of water to consume it all.

Very disappointed. I had a roast duck and soy chicken noodle soup. The duck and chicken are tasteless - tell tale sign that they are not freshly made. After my food arrived I then realised that every time a roastie is ordered, the portion is being reheated in the microwave. The lady doing the chopping of the meat sneezed quite a few times, luckily not on any food as far as I can tell, but she sneezed without covering herself up and that's not nice if you are eating with her sneezing next to you. The bubble tea is nice, but not worth the trip at all. Definitely not going back and will tell all my friends to avoid this restaurant too.

Food was great. Reasonable Price. Okay environment. We were having a good night until we came down to sort out the bill. Me and my friend had the bill split in half. I gave out the cash first then my friend paid by eftpost. And then the lady asked me to pay again as she said that she hasn't take the payment from me yet. I got a bit upset and told her that I already did! Then she turned to my friend and said "You haven't paid then?!" But obviously the eftpost receipt was still on the counter. She got confused herself and asked me to pay for it again. But I refused as there is no way that I'd pay twice ! Then she said okay with her confusing face. It was the most embarrassing experience ever !!!! I got really disappointed! It just ruined my night ! The problem here was lack of focus during working hours. The lady was talking to other people while she was sorting out our bill ! I hope that they can be more responsible with their work !

Me and my other half has been patrons of this solid establishment for a few years. Their roast duck is excellent and their milk tea is amongst the best there are with very soft and tasty pearls. Visit it and give it a try for a cheap and cheerful eat.
