Review Indian Sweets & Snacks - Wellington

Best samosas in town. You can expect good traditional food. Value for money. No frills eatery. Paneer paratha and chat are must try.

Chicken biriyani was good but portion was small as per the price Samosa was good. Raita was not good it was too sweet and sour

Authentic taste. You get all the different aromas blasted in as soon as you enter(not a good thing, could do with better ventilation). A bit pricey but that's Wellington/NZ based. (Paid $50 for 5 Samosas, 1 Kachori, 3 Teas and 1 plate paneer pakora)

Very nice lunch here. Quick service and friendly staff. Food was so good! Tried the Veg Thali for $14 lunch time, and it filled me up with lots of joy. Tried the dessert as well, the hot gulab jamun was really good. The only Indian restaurant that open in Newtown when others closed. Very great experience. Will definitely come back again

Delicious sweets and snacks, I'm less a fan of their curries personally mostly because I'm used to them without bone in meat which they do here (weak I know lol) but their food has always been delicious and the atmosphere is nice. The mango lassi is out of this world delicious too

My go to place for Indian sweets. I think there's about 28 to choose from. I haven't tried them all yet but I'm making good progress and I'm yet to find one I haven't liked. Favorites so far Cham Cham, Lemon Kali, Malai Chop, and Barfi.

If you are missing Indian street food, then this place is a must visit. Friendly staff. The music definitely takes you back in India vibes. Had the pani puri and dahi bhalla, amazing flavours and packed with sweet and sourness. Also tried the Indian sweets at the counter, omg took me back home. Original flavours and taste.

Simply the most authentic Indian food in Wellington. Delicious, healthy, real food.

The best indian restaurant in the entire district of Wellington. Sadly they just have one outlet which is very far away from the place I live. Kindly do open more outlets!

Decent food and decent price with good variety if sweets and snacks. Will recommend for quick bites and snacks selection as seating is bit limited.

I think by far the best indian restaurant in the entire city of Wellington! I just heard someone that the chats are good so dropped by to eat and my god.. the food was really tasty! Definitely worth the money and I went all the way from lower hutt so definitely worth all the effort!

The best Indian vegetarian food in Wellington! Any of their paneer dishes are highly recommended. Its not all about the food. The service is amazing too. Once my friend and I got our food to take away. We left and about 5 minutes into our walk back home we realised we were one takeaway container short. We turn around and saw one of the staff running after us waving to get our attention. We had left it on the counter but thank you for the staff for their loyalty and bringing it to us!

Great authentic food and recommendations from the owner were perfect to suit our tastes. Been twice and now one of our favourite spots in Newtown.

Excellent customer service and incredible food. Not too sure what all the negative reviews are about. I found the prices to be very reasonable and had a delightful authentic experience. Oh and try the coconut burfi! Thank you Raj and your wonderful team.

The customer service is very poor. Extremely
rude behavior, especially the young chap with beard at the counter. We have
been hearing complaints about their rude behavior and we should not entertain
it. This is New Zealand. We don’t care from where ever they migrated to this
country. However, we expect them to leave their bagges behind them and adhere
to the culture of this great country. The actual owner of this shop seems to be
nice. But the employees at the counter, especially the guy with bread. If the owner
wants to retain his business, he should either
throw this guys out or provide some train . We had already lodge a complaint
with Wellington City council look into some of these issue. Especially pricing
etc.

So the service is terrible and the decor is crappy, but the food is authentic and delicious. Proper Indian street food like Pani Puri and Bhel Puri, and a huge variety of sweets.
Thomas Basil Perry
Had a delicious chicken jalfrezi, soft chapatis and thick mango lassi. Many options for vegetarian dishes. Reasonably priced. Very basic decor but clean.

very Bad Experience. Poor Customer Service. Charged for Returned dish. Rude Behaviour. Never going back there. Owner was rude and not apologetic

Have been here several times and always gone for the lunch half and half goat curry. Goat curry is beautiful but as mentioned, every time I have been there it's like they are doing me a favour..... either rude, silent or ignore you at counter. Once they made me wait close to 20 minutes for some rice to go with the curry and didn't even get a 'sorry' (even after Politely mentioned I was going to be late back to work).
Enid_liew
Ordered a Thali. It contains 3 tablespoon of rice, 2 palm sizes roti, goat curry with only 3 pieces of goat meat and vegetarian curry with only 1 piece of vegetarian stuff. $$12 for each thali.
Never going back there. Owner was rude too.
Chandni Kontractor
Totally overpriced. 5 panipuri for $7 what a rip off. Service is lame but I don't really care but the prices!! too expensive for average stuff.

A favorite regular place of mine. The chat is delicious and I love the Indian music videos they play. It takes me back to the restaurants in Little India, Singapore. The service is always extremely fast and I often get free jalebi, yum! I believe that the employed woman previously spoken of in reviews is no longer there because the owners are always friendly. Don't expect a westernized version of Indian food - this is the real deal.

Went to check out this indian restaurant today.ended up buying some randomly selected sweets.i paid total of $NZ36......WTH.....what for. I found it very dear.i'd rather buy cadbury chocolates.service wasn't that great either.Rip off.sweets weren't even weighed.i aren't going back to this filth.

I've been buying indian sweets from there for a few years, and getting charged a massive range of prices. Most recently I went to get just a few items, and they tried to charge me $20 - despite a price of $18/kg on the sweets! - I pointed out how inflated this was - they didn't care at all. They never weigh stuff, just pick a random number. Often very impolite also - bit disappointing as I used to go out of my way to visit there and pay their inflated prices - not after last time though. Really disappointing, and probably illegal pricing, and very rude response when asked about it.

I love this place, they do the best Pani Puri and Chat Papri. The Butter chicken and Chicken Madras are pretty decent also. Oh and I love the Samosa's and the Chai Tea.

As I watched the sun go down over the hazy distance of Mumbai's Chowpatty Beach, and lovers stroll arm in arm over the flat sand, I cursed myself for not doing likewise with a Bhel Puri cradled in my hands. For some reason, although it had been my intention, my visit to India was devoid of this extraordinary piece of Indian junk food. It may have been the fear of what a friend described as "Latrine Cuisine" but for whatever reason it didn't happen, and this was the one place on earth that a Bhel Puri should be eaten.

Newtown is not second best, it is much further down the list, but the number of places in Wellington where a Bhel Puri can be eaten is quite small. At lunch time my memory of Mumbai and Chowpatty returned and I set out to see whether a Bhel Puri could be found within walking distance of Newtown's ethnic dining strip.

There were two, one was shut, and its windows were so filthy that it was difficult to to see inside as to whether it was still a restaurant. The other, over the road and down a bit was Indian Sweets & Snacks.

The previous reviews weren't promising. But Zomato tales of a very "rude" "unfriendly", "abusive", "obnoxious" lady behind the counter only served to whet my appetite further. Unfortunately, it seems she may have had a day off.

Inside there is a large array of nice looking Indian sweets in the cooling cabinet and stacked bags of dried snack food on most surfaces. A golden cat with a waving paw beckoned me to the counter but the lone individual in the kitchen who saw me seemed to regard me as one would regard a passing cloud. Fortunately another guy appeared from a back room and I ordered my Bhel Puri and a Mango Lassi. $10.

The service wasn't exactly a floor show, but the chap that served me did become animated and friendly when asked as to the sauce composition of the Pani Puri they had advertised - another fond memory of Mumbai.

The Bhel Puri arrived quickly and the Mango Lassi was already waiting for me with a row of others in the refrigerator cabinet. This is a good combination.

A Bhel Puri is basically a savoury pile of puffed rice with chopped vegetables (potato, onion). The rice gives it a brilliant texture, tamarind chutney and Chat masala give it a citrus tang, and spicy heat. Fried Sev (like a thin noodle) on top adds crunchiness. There are many variants and I've never had two the same. Like many other popular ethnic classics (e.g. peking duck) the combination of multiple flavours and textures make its whole more than the sum of its parts.

The Lassi was delicious and the yoghurt base tempered the spicy heat from the chutney. The puffy pile of texture and flavour was great and the balance provided by the Lassi was excellent. The Bhel puri also included peanuts.

Apart from the disappointment of not being terrorised by the lady, this little place isn't at all bad. They had trays of hot curries in a warming cabinet, and I saw a couple of people with thalis that looked good. I also noticed on the menu at least half a dozen goat (in India they call it mutton) dishes which is a real plus, also dosa masala.

Would I go back - yes I think I would, and maybe if the joint over the road (and down a bit) cleaned their windows I'd be tempted to try there too. I'd also be tempted to rate Indian Snacks slightly higher than 3.5 but that will await the goat.

If you haven't already had a Bhel Puri, its one to try before you finally pop your clogs.

The food is amazing! The service is okay.. They don't communicate with the customers well or between each other.... I would recommend it but just for a casual night out

Hello,I had an very unpleasant experience with this restaurant recently. I visited this restaurant last weekend to order a take away. I ordered 2 vegetable biriyani & 1 kadai paneer with my order I made a special request to prepare the food mild as I am taking the food to a patient in the nearby hospital. The person at the counter nodded his head to all my instructions. I got my takeaway everything seems good but the reality is the food he gave us is extremely hot ( very very very hot )I am being an Indian and used to eat hot food the only thing I can taste in the biriyani is just the chilli powder, Both the biriyani dumped in the bin. The kadai paneer was alright but not good enough.I am very disappointed with this restaurant, according to me they failed to take clear & very important instructions from the customer and I don't recommend this place to any of my friends.

This place makes you feel so worthless. The food is below average except for the Indian street food which is quite authentic. The lady has no clue of how to talk to customers at all, much more interested in watching her bollywood songs than actually taking the customer's order. Also just to add, I'm pretty sure considering this is a restaurant, your food is supposed to be served to you on your table and not being called by that awful woman to come up to the counter because she's handling another other after she's taken time out of her busy tv schedule. Disgusting service and bad food. Deserves to be closed down.

Great food tainted with the wrath of an obnoxious, abusive, very unfriendly female behind the counter. I'll not be returning.

Want extra abuse with your samosa? How about a side of appalling manners? don't bother with a response, it's dished up for free!

Absolutely no concept of customer service.
These guys r gud with snacks and sweets. I wouldn't recommend any non vegetarian food from here. I love their bhelpuri, it's tangy , tasty , crunchy, munchy nd delicious

They do a good Thali and it is cheap however the woman behind the counter is the most unfriendly person I have ever had the misfortune of ever meeting. It wasn't once but has been at least twice I have met her unfriendliness. I won't be back only because of her. Needs to learn what the concept is of what customer service is in NZ.

Edit to say, I went back last week and this woman is outrageous. Totally obnoxious.

I have been going back a few times lately and haven't seen the lady however I did go and have a Masala Dosa. It came with quite a spicy dhal curry with a couple of chutney's. A coconut one and a sambal one.

Both totally delicious as was the Dosa, the dosa itself was nice and crispy and the filling just perfect. I have upped my rating because of this. Will be back for more of this. Probably as authentic as it gets in Wellington.

The Masala Dosa I had on Sunday was TOTALLY DELICIOUS. My new love.

First of all i went to get paneer there because they sell them fresh and when I go home spend 40minutes cooking it and adding ingredients like cream, spices, garlic, coriander and oil it turns out the bloody thing is stale- sour and disgusting!!! So I leave my partner and go to complain about it and the manager cant understand or properly speak english and tells me the manager "Raj" is coming in half an hour and to come back then! He refuses to believe that the paneer is bad even though I have brought cooked and uncooked samples ...then after him trying to translate what i was saying for 5 mins (that i want my money back as well as a new batch of paneer for the time and ingredients that have gone to waste !) his son turns up (who is the manager) and even though he can understand English does not believe i should get any more then a refund!, ie, the time and ingredients that have just gone to waste isnt his fault! I have spent a lot of money at this store and the way i was treated in front of an audience of diners was horrible considering it was over a puny $12 worth of paneer! Very, very bad customer handling and service by the manager!!! Please stay away!

Masala dosa would have to be one of my all time favourite breakfast dishes. An incredibly light and thin lentil-based pancake, stuffed with a spicy potato filling and served with coconut chutney and sambar. Yum! So when I heard that a little dosa place had opened in Newtown I was in like Flynn... and SO not disappointed. As well as the awesome dosa, they also do blimp-like puri and bhatura that practically float off the plate they're so light. Another good snack option is the chat papri - very spicy the last time I went so you might want to just negotiate the spice levels when you order. And of course they have a sweet counter, loads of colourful and exotic sweets just begging to come home with you and do that quick migration straight to the thighs. The prices are incredibly competitive - $7 for dosa or chole bhatura for example, and the atmosphere is total bolly basic. Think formica tables and a flat screen overhead with the latest bollywood movie and you're there, transported to that wee cafe in Bombay where you took refuge from the sweltering heat, drank lassi and planned your excursion to Elephanta Island from your Lonely Planet guide.

Service: 3/5
Ambience: 4/5
Food: 4/5
Value for Money: 5/5
