Review Gibbos Fresh Fish - Whakatane

Really enjoyed the Hawaiian burger here. It was a delightful surprise with the juicy grilled pineapple.

The food may well be very good but waiting for over 40 mins to receive our order is totally unacceptable. Why keep the customer waiting because you can't be bothered putting on more staff to meet the demand. Service has gone to the dogs.

Let me tell you about Gibbos - they are remarkable- not just for the food, but for their attitude. Last week, they had a fire in the store - later that day I saw they had a food trailer outside the store, still serving customers. One of the owners, Nicole was in the trailer. She smiled and asked, "are you here for some smoked fish?". And now, a short time later - they are fully open again. They are remarkable, resilient people who just keep moving forward, offering only the best for their customers and giving so much back to our community all of this with a smile. And damn, their raw fish is next level goodness!

Oh dear Gibbos, you let the side down badly yesterday. Usually the food is fantastic but yesterday the batter, what there was of it on the fish was so oily that the paper was saturated in the few minutes it took to get home. We were left feeling quite queasy.

Seriously the service.. was very helpfull re phone call..fish was fresh snapper & batter was crispy & well drained.. and chips were a good amount...& Super delicious! Love them in paper..rather than cardboard trays...Plus the clevedon oysters were... Sooo.. good.. thanks team!

Best fish n chips we have had in a long time, chrispy chips and loverly batter. Will definitely pop in again next time we are in town. B

Absolutely best fish n chips I've had in a long time... fish n mussels were fresh n were cooked perfectly, oil well drained n the batter was light n crispy. Still getting over how juicy my fish was. Been a long time since I've had fish cooked that well from a shop. Raw fish was lovely too. Thanks guys

Gibbo,s a place you should not go past without stopping for an amazing kai. The management and staff are so accommodating and friendly and service was an 11. Most heartily recommended to all who are traveling to or through Whakatane. 20 🌟 from me. Nga Mihi. Judith

Delicious meal from Gibbo’s! The burgers had fresh buns and the fillings were scrumptious. Burgers were presented in a cardboard box which shows Gibbo’s rate their burgers and after devouring them so do we! Donuts were sweet enough to finish off the meal. Would 100% recommend grabbing a feed from here!

Went to Gibbo’s Fresh Fish takeaway shop. They have their own fishing boat that supplies their two stores (this one and another on the wharf). They mainly sell fish and chips but will also grill the fish instead for just 50 cents more. Their kumara chips are very good and not very greasy. They also have a vast selection of other seafood such as various uncooked fish, oysters, and some smoked fish, fritters, marinated mussels, shrimp, scallops, etc. They also have some non-seafood items in the menu. Good seafood, good prices. You order and pay and are given a number which they call when your order is ready.
