Review 50 Bistro - Christchurch

Sammy Clark
Arrived early for High Tea at 50 Bistro (The George Hotel), to an on site customer car park. Lovely, clean & tidy grounds. Was greeted with a warm, friendly & welcoming reception. Seated early & offered the option of tea or coffee (two coffee selections per person allowable, throughout the duration of the high tea). Served an apple & cinnamon scone with jam & cream - delicious start to the High Tea! We decided on tasting by sweet, then savoury, then critiquing each dish as we went along. Our hero dish was the Crumbed Prawn with saffron aioli. Our least favourite dish was the mushroom vol au vent - which was a little dry. We saved the mulled plum entremet until last - as this was one of the most interesting looking dishes on the menu. We agreed that it tasted like a Turkish delight - with a soft centred texture (in place of a firm texture). The other interesting dish for us was the frangipane pear tart - presented beautifully & inviting to eat - yum! 😋 The caramel brownie was one of my daughter's favourite dishes, with small chunks of chocolate hidden throughout. The carrot loaf was absolutely devine & looked stunning on the plate. The mochaccino coffee was nicer than the cappuccino coffee. The main waitress serving us was friendly & took the time to engage in conversation with us - good sense of humour too! The dining area was clean, tidy & nicely presented. The addition of a conservatory dining area provides extra dining space with natural light streaming in. There are a few changes that we would recommend to help improve the high tea menu & experience 1) Replace the mushroom vol au vent 2) have a high tea menu present on the table (avoids having to remember the waitresses introduction of the dishes) & 3) space your guests out - so they don't feel like there personal space is being invaded. Where possible, leave an empty table between guests. Overall, we really enjoyed our high tea experience here. We shared thoughts of our experience with the friendly & engaging male & female staff members at reception. They rounded off this great experience for us, by bidding us farewell with 'see you next time.' Thank you for your hospitality today 50 Bistro (The George Hotel)!

I had a pulled beef burger..was very good. My partner has the amazing Rice Risotto...you must try if you love rice. Service was a wee bit slow...but they were very busy..I recommend you try the tasty food here, and the drink's are good too.

Food was great and the staff were so friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere was cool with some really great light features on the wall but it wasn't cheap. Reccomend if you're looking for a very nice evening out and not on a budget.

Located in the George hotel, parking available, the entrance is slightly hidden beside the water fountain. The restaurant is well decorated with Christmas decorations. Christmas crackers are on tables for Christmas menu. We went with conventional lunch menu. Even though the lunch special of soup of the day, main and glass of wine for $50 is of great value too. The sirloin we had was cooked to our liking and the chunky hand-cut chips were delicious. The tiger prawn paradelle was so tasty with a twist of crunchy almond too. Would definitely recommend this place and visit again.

Great place, we were well looked after with staff going out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Went here for dinner to celebrate a friends 60th wedding anniversary. The food was beautiful, and the desert was exciting. See the attached photos of the extra surprise desert.

Our group had a range of entrees and mains. They were all beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Service was great. Venue was spacious and warm.

Good straight up and down food for two tired Aussies. Corn soup, fresh oysters, excellent lamb and grouper. Matched with good service and a spanking bottle of trinity hill Tempranillo. Well done. Highly recommended.

Whilst restaurant review sites are a good place to start there's something to be said for looking through a restaurant's menu and using your own gut feeling about where to eat. 50 Bistro doesn't rate as highly as a lot of restaurants in Christchurch but I've absolutely no doubt that it's better than most of them.

We were looking for something a little special while visiting Christchurch and 50 Bistro did not disappoint. The menu is elegant and refined with a lot of thought put into the dishes. We had the Duck Parfait and Scallops with Pork Belly for entree and both were very tasty, the former probably the most impressive only because scallops and pork belly seem to be served everywhere these days (but that's because it's usually so good!). For mains we had the Duck and the Pork with sides of mash and kale. Both mains were well cooked and served "two ways" which seems to be a theme amongst the mains at 50 Bistro. The truffled mash was really good, very truffle-e but not too much so. The kale was little bland and in need of at least seasoning, I guess it meant that we had our greens but probably not much else.

The desserts were almost all classic but each with it's own unique twist. Often when dining out you find that there is obviously someone in the kitchen with a little more creativity and at 50 Bistro it's definitely their Pasty Chef. Whilst the entrees and mains were very good, the desserts were both very good and very interesting.

With dining like this don't expect massive portions and it's not going to be a cheap meal but that's not what you come to somewhere like 50 Bistro for. There is thought put into the dishes, the quality of the ingredients is obvious and the staff are a lot more attentive. Speaking of which, whilst the staff may not have been the most polished group, they were genuine and eager and I'd take genuine but perhaps a little rough over stuffy and fake but perfectly executed any day of the week.

All in all we had a great meal and having scoured various sources for the best place to eat were very pleased that we chose 50 Bistro, even over other more highly rated restaurants in Christchurch.

Wonderful dinner service. We stayed at The George and were too tired to dine out after a long trip and decided to stay in at 50 Bistro.
It was a beautifully decorated modern restaurant. Service was just wonderful and attentive.
Although we didn't get a chance to dine at the Pascatore, we were still happy with 50 Bistro. Unlike the name suggested "Bistro", it is more like a fine dinning restaurant (but without the fine dinning price tag). All the dishes were nicely and perfectly seasoned, cooked and presented. All the ingredients tasted fresh.
We also had breakfast at 50 Bistro and we cannot fault anything at breakfast service either.

The presentation for entrées is beautiful, with a fairly amazing taste. However the main is really a failure. Got an overcooked Angus beef tho asked for medium-rare, and it tastes really funny.

After coming here for six wonder years as a anniversary treat, we were so disappointed with both main meals. The fish was overcooked, dry and chewy, the pork was not much better. We were treated to a free meal after complaining. It is such a shame as the meals have always been so good in the past. Farewell 50 on the Park, we will go elsewhere next year.

Special occasion dinner - never again.
Requested seating outside the day prior and all confirmed. We arrive to find a rowdy birthday party outside and no seat for us with no apology or anything. Staff a bit snooty and we were made to feel like it was a privilege to dine here. Inconsistent mojito cocktails - one round ok, the other sickly sweet.

Food was 'ok'

Had the most amazing meal here in April 2012. Would say the food, the presentation and service from staff would be up there with some of the fine Restaurants I have had the pleasure of eating in.

From the Entrée through to the Desert it was tasty and only the best ingredients were used.
Look forward to eating there again soon....

Lunch here was a birthday treat and it certainly was. We shared a bread platter, which was very tasty and then both had fillet steaks. Cooked perfectly as ordered. Was great that we had a choice of 2 side dishes each included in the price. Service was excellent and a classy place to eat.

One of CHC's top restaurants...but do order a side of Vegies or salad as the courses generally are served as a 'stack' on top of a varied array of potato- type arrangement(classy though - but you know the sort of 'foodie-speak' description)
We always order a portion of bread for two before the main course - this comes with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar for dipping...
Always excellent - service & food...we've eaten there a zillion times
