We stopped in here for lunch and beer. We discovered an appetizer called "Prawn Twisters", an amazing invention. They were so good and the atmosphere was so good, we returned for dinner and did the same meals (different craft beers) all over again.

We came here for a three course dinner, we had the chicken liver pate, beef cheeks, lamb, steak, crème brûlée, date and banana pudding The food tasted good, nothing that really stood out, the desserts were a bit too sweet for us. View was good as you can see the octagon, nice and quiet small-ish restaurant, slightly limited menu selection. Atmosphere 4/5 Service 4/5 Food 3.5/5

Stairs lead to the cosy restaurant over looking the Octagon. Friendly and very accommodating staff and chef for specific food requirements. Prompt service. I sat at the table by the window for airflow and view.

Outstanding. Mindblowing flavours. Duck salad was amazing, fish of the day came with mandarin sauce, rhubarb creme brulee was just perfect! Thoroughly enjoyed it, definitely will be back !

Went there for lunch and ordered Paella. Overall good meal but not exceptional. Paella is the soupy type but I prefer the drier version. It has plenty of seafood and nicely cooked. It is located in a nice historical building and staff is attentive but not overbearing. Certainly one of the fine dining restaurant that worth visiting in Dunedin.

Had lunch there today, top notch food which is well presented. Tuna Tataki, med/rare eye fillet and the Rhubarb crème brûlée were all spot on in a very relaxed setting with very friendly staff. Recommend.

Bacchus definitely impressed! All meals were perfectly cooked and exceptionally presentable. Everyone on my table was more than happy. Wine and deserts were amazing also. Glad i found this place - looking forward to next time

Nice food here. Staff are friendly. We ended up dinner at 10:50pm, and all staff just are patient. High recommendation for this restaurant.

Book early as possible as there are always full. A good place for our anniversary night.

The food was excellent. A real highlight was the Turkish bread with the dukkah. The beef cheek and also the lamb were delicious.

The Pork belly was yummy, and the polenta was great. We had the Chardonnay from Hawkes Bay and it was amazing! I had the lemon cheesecake as dessert: so good :) Very nice place to spend a lovely evening!

Bacchus is one of the few fine dining establishments in Dunedin. It's conveniently located upstairs in the Octagon and provides a panoramic view over the pedestrians if you secure a good table.

Our service here was friendly albeit slow to provide the menus and ask us for our order.

We started with the flowerpot bread which is an artsy little dish where the bread is served inside a flower pot. The bread was soft and warm and was complimented with fresh butter.

I ordered steak for my mains which had been sliced and cooked to a quality medium rare. I didn't get a strong 'wow' factor from my meal and the portion sizes weren't overly filling.

I would recommend people to dine at Bacchus for special occasions as its not priced for frequent diners. The ambience is well presented and classy which made for a pleasant, but not illustrious meal out.
The food is good (albeit expensive), however I don’t think it makes up for some of the shady practice going on at this restaurant. When I initially sat down with my family, we were offered sparkling or plain water. I chose sparkling, and continued to do so for the rest of the night. I repeatedly accepted sparkling when the waitress tended our table, and at one point, she poured my mother a glass without even asking her if she wanted it (this is of particular relevance in my opinion). At the end of the night, our bill included a charge for all the sparking water we had drunk during the course of the evening (over $20). There was no warning about this when we initially sat down, and I was particularly upset that the waitress had poured my mother a glass without even asking her if she wanted it. Obviously this practice doesn’t contravene standard restaurant law, however I thought it was very misleading and deceptive. Shame on you Bacchus.

My absolutely favourite Dunedin dining spot.
Situated in the central of octagon, taking a flight of stairs up and is welcomed by the friendly front of house.

The service is great and water was brought to us quickly offering us both the option of tap and sparkling.

Entree came quickly and the pate is smooth and flavourful.
But what I want to talk about is the main. Wow. The steak was so soft and cooked to how I liked it. The wasabi mash is a great compliment to the steak and nothing like k have tasted before. Just the right amount of spice and the softness of the mash is divine. This is my choice of order ever single time.

The passion fruit and fish dish was exciting. Interesting combination, not something we have tried before.

Good atmosphere and with great service and great food. 5 stars.

Had NYE dinner here and wow, blown away. Amazing food and service. We started with bread and dukkah which was a great way to start. Then we both had steaks with mustard mash and got a side of jersey bennes (I think? Potatoes anyway), and greens. Steaks were cooked perfectly, no gristle or fat at all, and combined with the mustard mash it was delicious. Wait staff even recommended a perfect glass of wine to go with the steaks. Excellent service! Will definitely be back if we're in Dunedin again.

Amazing food service wine.......was told one of the nicest restaurants in town, we were casually dressed, no booking but staff were happy to accommodate. So glad I came here, when you compare some of the prices of pub grub around here the extra few $$ can take your dining experience to a whole new level of quality delish!

It is one of the places that transcends time; the ornate ceilings, warm lighting, geraniums blooming in the flower boxes, view of the streets from our table. Of course wasn't all about the ambience. The liver pate was nicely accentuated with abundance of black pepper, adding a nice punch and texture. Steak was done to perfection (medium-rare) and is probably the best I've had. Every bite was thoroughly enjoyable. Would've scored a 5 if it's not for the sides of vegetable that was overcooked, and the apple tart tatin which I thought was rather mediocre.

A great fine dinner restaurant. I recommend all my friends to come here for their special occasion because the steak and lamb here are the best. Although, the price is a bit high but with the best quality of food, you won't regret it.

WOW!!! This is a terrific d.... WOW!!!
This is a terrific dining experience!
Spent the past two weeks visiting NZ & Australia and this had been the best dining experience yet.
Flexable kitchen worked with dietary needs.
If your in Dunedin and desire excellence, visit Bacchus.
If you can, call ahead and ask for a table with a view of the Octagon.

Just go!. Lovely intimate restaurant upstairs in the Octagon. Fabulous service and simply one of the best steaks I have eaten (and that's a lot!). Perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Excellent local and international wine list too.

Have been here for dinner a couple of years ago and it was amazing. Perfect wine, service and food. Recently went here for a beautiful bottle of bubbles, recommended by the knowledgeable wait staff. My only critique was that we were frowned upon by other patrons because we weren't eating.

Visited on the 5th of June Lunch time

Bacchus is really one of the nicest restaurant in Dunedin. In terms of food quality they deserve 5 stars. However, I do not understand the fact how staff can be so casual and rude in a restaurant of this calibre. Basically asking our table "What do you want" without saying "Hello or Would you like water?" little polite manners would make a huge difference.

Thank you..

I've been to Bacchus Restaurant twice in the last seven days and both times I left feeling extremely satisfied. The first time I went for dinner and I had a Moroccan chicken dish served with Israeli couscous. It was super delicious. My partner had the fish of the day, which was sole dusted with cajun pepper, served on a potato mash flavoured with a passion fruit and lime glaze. The sliver I had of hers was absolutely delicious. In fact I enjoyed it so much that when we went there for lunch later in the week I had to order the same thing.
The deserts were great as well. I had the chocolate brownie with their home made vanilla ice cream. Sometimes I find chocolate brownies too heavy but this one was perfect! My partner had the sticky date and banana toffee pudding. This too was delicious.
While Bacchus is a pricey restaurant I had no regrets about paying what I did. Though if you are the kind of person who prefers quantity over quality you may be disappointed...

Took my wife here for her birthday. Great decor and atmosphere, amazing flavours and attentive staff. Presentation of the food was not quite there for the asking price - liquid spots up side of plate, some haphazard placement of elements on the plate, etc. Normally, I wouldn't be picky but for a premium price, you expect a premium experience. Still, just a minor quibble over an otherwise excellent dining experience.

Bacchus best food I have experienced in Dunedin since moving back.
Not cheap but at least it's really well done.
If I am taking some people out for dinner and don't want to gamble on it being crap, Bacchus is a good option. Good place.

Nice place definitely try and get a window seat, the menu is simple but elegant and the food is well presented and tastes great. Bacchus is a good place to go if you want a little privacy and intimacy, well done guys!

We had a great night at Bacchus with the fantastic food matching the service from the staff. The restaurant also has a nice upstairs outlook of the Octagon through some flower boxes.

There is an extensive wine list and after Auckland the meals are large. Try the chicken liver pate with red onion and pomegranate relish or if they have it a fish special with lime.

My husband and I celebrated our Anniversary at Bacchus after hearing about it for years (when we were still two poor Uni students)! With two years of marriage under our belts we felt it was a very good excuse to spoil ourselves and were curious to see if Bacchus would live up to all the hype and good reviews!

I'm happy to say that our expectations were certainly met in all areas. The restaurant design was very calm and comtemporary, and not too busy (we arrived at 7pm), the service was charming, friendly and professional (we feared it would all be a little too 'formal' for us but were wrong!). Our meals were all just beautiful.

The highlight for me and my sweet-tooth was the Creme Brulee, it was out of this world! We both loved our experience at Bacchus and will be back!

My husband and I last weekend dined at Bacchus Wine Bar and Restaurant last weekend and it was outstanding in so many words I cannot think were to begin !!!

For entree I had the salmon and my husband had the lambs fry and bacon which was just like mum used to make it ! For our main I had the chicken on pasnip with spinach and bell pepper absolutely to die for !!! My husband had the steak cooked perfectly medium rare.

To finish off we both had for desert the rhubarb creme brulee the best creme brulee I have ever had in my life time.

Overall great food, great service and a great wine selection.

We would go back in a heart beat and I believe that Bacchus Wine Bar and Restaurant is by far the best restaurant in Dunedin.

We highly recommend you will not be disappointed !

My husband and I took a potential out of town client to this restaurant last week. Although we were happy with our meals, ( the risotto was excellent) she had a crab cake for an entree which had shell all through it.
I wouldn't expect this from a restaurant of this calibre and even after telling the waitress our guest wasn't offered a replacement or even a free coffee
It certainly left an unpleasant taste all around
Would we go there again,...probably not

Ordered two glasses of Emerson's pilsener, one coffee, one glass of house wine, a cheese platter and a selection of bread. Althought I expected the drinks to be more expensive (I consider Bacchus's decor and ambiance to be excellent)I thought the cheese selection and bread to be mediocre (the latter was even stale) so the ultimate price of $69 was exorbitant. We won't be back!

Dined with a few of friends and obviously a large table is too much for this restaurant.
The entrees took forever to arrive and the my scallops were uninspired.
At $37 odd for a main you would expect it to be spectacular. I ordered Blue cod and it was over cooked, my partner ordered the salmon and it was also over cooked. Just not good enough! We wont be back . FYI the service was friendly and professional.

Fantastic place to go, expensive but worth treating yourself. Great wine list, great food, service is always of the same excellent standard. Has always consistently performed above expectation.
