Review Luna Bar & Restaurant - Dunedin

Shashi Kariyawasam
Beautiful views, friendly & helpful staff. The three course meal was fabulous with good portions & reasonable prices for beautifully cooked and presented food. I would have liked them a bit warmer but it wasnt bad at all. Good vibes, Cozy atmosphere. Would love to visit again. They do have upstairs for functions.

While visiting Dunedin, we were treated to dinner at Luna. What a fantastic place. The views to the coast are breathtaking and the food was excellent. Everything on the menu looked like a winner. We ordered rib eye steak, fish and chips, a big bowl of seafood chowder, Wagyu burger with caramelized onions, chorizo and spinach fettuccine (the special), and a vegetarian risotto. Did I mention that every dish was excellent? We'll be back when we're back!!

Great views but average food. Tried the lamb and brûlée from the set menu. Lamb was overcooked and very hard to cut through with the butter knife that was supplied for the meal.

This review is a bit late. Our walking group had a Christmas lunch & were given an upstairs table. Friendly, smiling & very efficient service of delicious food. We ordered a good variety of different meals and all were thoroughly enjoyed. Great value for money. Interesting range of drinks too. Various members of my family regularly eat at Luna and it is consistently excellent.

A small but restaurant and bar with pleasant atmosphere with a great view of the city and harbour. I had the Chicken filo it was tasty and plenty on the plate to satisfy any appetite. Service was pleasant but I struggled to hear what she was saying to me, very quietly spoken. All in all a pleasant evening.

Hidden Gem up on Maori hill. Excellent food and service. Bayleys was a bit congealed which we feedback to the team. Would highly recommend 👌

Dinner on Wednesday night, what a lovely evening. Booked a table a couple days in advanced, for 2x people for 7:30pm. Although the place was quite full upon arrival, it did not feel overcrowded, but instead felt cosy. We were greeted by a friendly waitress. All the team there were friendly. Both the service and the food was on point. Did not have to wait too long for food. Had a decent view of Dunedin city. 10/10 would definitely recommend, and would definitely go again😊

The restaurant has a nice ambience, beautifully plated food, good food and staff.

I had a wonderful extended lunch here. First, the views here are possibly the best in Dunedin, with an outlook over the city, the harbour, the peninsula, and the Pacific ocean on the coast. Second, the food and coffee was great. I had eggs benedict with bacon, and a few coffees, and later a dessert of apple and berry crumble. The staff were very helpful too, accommodating my desire to have a quiet spot to read a book as well as eating of course. I will definitely be coming back here.

We booked Luna Bar for our small wedding and we were absolutely blown away with how generous and accommodating management was. The views of Dunedin are amazing, everybody absolutely loved their food (We all decided we would all go back to Dunedin just to have the duck again!). The staff were friendly, and we had an amazing time. We were also rained out of our original wedding venue, and we were so appreciative when they offered the beautiful room upstairs to do the ceremony. We honestly couldn't have asked for more, and if I had the skills to write a better review I would :)

Thank you for such a wonderful evening last night for my Father’s 80th. The food was superb and the service was excellent and without fault. Highly recommend.

Just had lunch here for my Mother 90th birthday. Simon was amazing. He made sure it was a special time for us all. The food was lovely too so thanks to the kitchen staff as well.

Great view of the city, delicious food! For dinner make sure you book ahead. It took quite a while to get our order but we were catching up with an old friend and were not under any time pressure so we didn't mind. The fish (sole) was amazing. The ice cream was just OK, expected a bit more. Overall great experience!

Sunday Breakfast when visiting in Dunedin, super cozy in stormy day, great view from the restaurant ( was hoping snowing but raining instead lol ) great hospitality, amazing food with generous portion and well priced too.

Extensive range of gluten free options, amazing location with stunning, uninterrupted views over the city. The food was delicious, the staff were friendly and accommodating. What’s more the food was well priced. We would recommend this restaurant.

Incredible view and the food was delicious!! Affordable too! I recommend the chicken filo.

I’m appalled at the service of Luna. Went here for a few drinks and I was expecting a cosy atmosphere, attentive staff and a good selection of wine. What I got was a waiters bitching behind the counter drinking cokes, scoffing on chips completely ignoring their customers. The lighting also was awful, felt like I was in KFC. The wine was poured as if it was a glass of water.. with there only being 3 selections for Pinot noir. It was painfully quiet, and when asked to play some music I was faced with a sarcastic remark. Would not go back again.

My Son and Daughter in Law took me out for dinner as a special treat while I was holidaying in Dunedin a couple weeks ago. We found the food lovely I had chicken filo, my Son had steak and Daughter in Law Fish chowder the service was good we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Upon leaving the premises I slipped on the floor area by the bar and fell to the ground hitting the table and chairs beside me as i fell. I was wearing flat leather shoes, the Staff were very apologetic and claimed they to found the floor very slippery. I felt quite ill from the fall and embarrassed at everyone steering at me also.Upon returning to Auckland the next day I sort medical help for the massive bruising to my arm and damage to my back from the fall to which I am still receiving physio. This  unfortunately spoilt the night for me. May be Management need to have the floor looked at to prevent others from falling.

If you're after a high quality dining experience, this isn't the place. Waiter forgot 1 of our 3 dishes. The Thai beef salad was good, but nothing thai about it - all the key flavours were missing. The antipasto platter was mediocre at best, resembling a premade platter from the supermarket, but probably reflected its lowish price. It's such a pity because the the views this place has deserve better. Lastly, we woke up with sore stomachs.

From it's perch on Highgate St, Luna offers stunning views of Dunedin. The atmosphere of the place is very contemporary and modern. I have yet to have had a full meal here as I've only been in for entrès and drinks. These however were well made. <br/>Staff were friendly and hospitable.

The brunch menu at Luna is definitely worth a try. Prices start from $15 and the portion is definitely sufficient. Although it's a bit far from town, the seafood chowder makes it worth the journey.

Seriously unimpressed. Asked for a latte and a cappuccino, they forgot and came 5 mins later to confirm, then 10 mins later they came with 2 cappuccino. When we what we ordered they said its basically the same thing and left!? Wait staff reading off the specials menu without making eye contact with patrons. Worst service I've seen in a long long time

Went there with a group of friends for a friends b'day lunch. Amazing service the staff are absolutely lovely, and the food was pretty good prices were reasonable and yep it was an overall enjoyable dining experience.

Prompt professional service!<br/>Amazing views<br/>Terrific food. <br/>Parking was a bit of a headache but well worth the struggle.

My wife and I dined at Luna Monday September 8th.  It had been intended as an early birthday meal for her but in the event she was not feeling very well.  That said, we found the menu superb with plenty of high class choices to be made.  We had entrées simple but lovely (in fact too much to eat so were able to take home the uneaten portions - what a super service!).  My wife had the king salmon while I ate a steak - both were beautifully prepared and presented and both were delicious.  We even managed a dessert each to round off our meal.  But better than all of that was the service.  Georgia was attentive but not intrusive and appreciated that my wife was not feeling well.  She looked after us beautifully from seating us by a window where we had great views across part of the city and the harbour.  I hope we shall be able to dine at Luna again.

took my family here during our holiday in Dunedin we read in lonely planet the view of the city was beautiful. That is the only positive thing about Luna, the staff were rude, the food was bland and expensive.

Had dinner at Luna Saturday 11 January 14. Staff were great. Greeted well. Waitress very good. Food order taken and all meals came out fast and hot. the mussel entrée nice. Main was the Hereford Beef Fillet. This was a great steak on a garlic potato hash. Had the Sticky date for dessert. Again a good portion. Overall the meals were a good size and very tasty.

This review is a general overview of Luna from several dinner time visits.<br/><br/>The service is inconsistent, the food is variable but always expensive for what you get.<br/>The time it takes to get a meal is far too long.<br/><br/>I have had the odd good experiences in Luna but unfortunately they are the exception and not the rule at Luna. There are better restaurants in the city which provide better food &amp; service for a similar price. <br/><br/>Luna's biggest draw is the beautiful view across the city but with service, food and price the way it is, Luna will not be on my list of places to go until things change.

Dreadful evening at this restaurant. From booking till end of dinner. Booking for a group I know they were asked if we could have window seat answer was we dont work that way. I would have walked away then personally. Waited an hour and a half for meals to arrive. What a disaster. Menu descriptions sounded enticing but that wasnt to be. The beer battered soul with hand cut chips at $36 a meal was just fish and chips and called such by the waitress. Rather interesting was the either eye fillet or sirloin steak med/rare with no provision for any cooking came to the table still mooing and blue. After the wait I asked how long for our meals to be told they were busy. How is this my problem? I choice a busy place to be sure food turns over and is fresh. If a restaurant with 4 tables one with ten or so guests can't cook a steak or get meals out quicker than an hour and a half I'd be reviewing 1 my price point and 2 my ability to cook steak to the required level I set out on my menu. Really over priced for mediocre meals. Even the baked fish ordered with no dressing came smothered. Not one meal was of restaurant standard. Saw better on Master chef we asked the maitre de to show the y cooked steak to the chef which he would not do. All in all an expensive mistake. I won't return.

I'm really surprised reading the reviews! I went in for a lovely romantic dinner on Thursday and really enjoyed the food and gorgeous view--top spot for date night! The pork belly was the best I've ever eaten. The meals were quite pricy though!

Good spot with some great views. I really enjoy Luna for lunch, the Burger is really good and the staff are generally pretty friendly and helpful.<br/>Dinner the menu isnt so great. The prices are pretty steep for average meals. But as a lunch spot yup not too bad.<br/>I will go back.

Have had two meals at Luna and each have been lovely. Both times we have gone with different couples from the local area who frequent Luna often. I guess it's tough when people review a restaurant and give it crappy ratings but they only have ever reviewed one place on this site. Suspicious much?<br/>Anyway, last time out we both had the panko crumbed squid and it was great; succulent on inside, crispy on the outside and a lovely chili dipping sauce. The staff were wonderful, friendly and very attentive. All this even though it was 9:30pm after a rugby test and the place was packed and they were having to turn people away.<br/>Good job Luna, I will be back.

We had been booked in for 3 weeks for our 5th wedding anniversary on the 10th March 2012. we were extremely disappointed to be sat at an un-set table, no menus were given to us only a bottle of water with no glasses! after about 5 minutes the menus got dumped on our table, meanwhile a group of 4 had come in and had been sat at a table etc, then their order got taken and we were still sitting there, then 2 glasses got placed on our table, then after a while the waitress came over to run through the menu - by this stage we had already decided what we would eat, then she goes "any guestions?" and walked off. After this we decided enough was enough, this was not the fine dining experience they portray so we got up and left, husband told the waitress we were leaving due to the poor service and all she could saw was "sorry about that, see ya later". We had been waiting for 20 minutes for our orders to be taken! Will never ever go back here!!!!! Also i would never recommend this to anyone! So instead we went to Scotia - that is one fine dining experience! <br/><br/>The staff of Luna should go to Scotia to experience what a fine dining experience is all about and also get some decent training for their high school aged staff other otherwise lower the price of your menu to reflect that it is not fine dining.

Went for dinner on a Thursday night. wait staff were excellent; friendly, quick and knowledgeable. the food was average. would be acceptable at a lower price but as it's top dollar the food wasn't really good enough. pork belly was tough and the crackling wasn't at all crispy. The banana pena cotta was delicious though!<br/>overall not a bad eat but not worth the price.

Arrived on Friday without a reservation, but had no issues or wait before being given a table. Had great service, with amazing food which was absolutely exquisite. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole dining experience and would highly recommend Luna! The only caution - and not a bad one - the Creme Brûlée is a generous serve and is best shared with a dining companion instead of attempting it as a solo effort :)

My partner and I really enjoyed our meal here. The atmosphere was great and the service was very professional. I ordered the blue cod which was cooked perfectly. The risotto it was served on was the best I have ever had and the sauce on top was delicious. My partner had the salmon which was also cooked perfectly. The coffee was pretty good too which was a pleasant surprise. If I had one criticism it would be that the garlic bread we ordered wasn't too garlicy. However this could be a plus for some people and the fact that it was served on a tasty pumpkin bread more than made up for the lack of garlic. Can't wait to dine here again.

We have dined at Luna several times and it is consistently fantastic, menu/food awesome, service fabulous, views to die for, staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Luna never fails to impress <br/><br/>We had a function in their upstairs room, fantastic it was like being in your own home with staff to cater to your every request, fabulous venue would highly recommend.

good meals (hapuka and fettuccine) nice flavors and good service. Pretty expensive for what you get but was all fine without blowing us away. Note, no close parking on a rainy night!!

The only good thing I can say about Luna is that it has a wonderful view of Dunedin.<br/>We booked a table in advance and were looking forward to the day, I think I thought a place with a view like this the food has to be at least comparable, how wrong. We were there on Sun 5 June<br/>We had 2 entrees 4 mains and 1 dessert, I had the crumbed squid in Panko crumbs, that is why I ordered it as Panko crumbs differ from ordinary crumbs which I believe these were, disappointed. My wife had the risotto balls which she thought the risotto was overcooked.<br/>I had the Hapuka which is a beautiful fish but was unseasoned and a little overdone on one side, it was resting on a risotto but I could hardly taste it since it was surrounded by swirls of Balsamic syrup which overpowered everything it should have had salsa Verde on the fish as well which is a green herb sauce not some insipid thing resembling tartare sauce. My daughter had the chicken parmigiana which was black underneath and tasted burnt, it was supposed to be on pesto fettuccine, just because the fettuccine was green doesn't mean it was pesto it's actually spinach, the hand cut fries were soggy and limp, so what if they were hand cut if you don't cook them properly they are never going to be any good.<br/>By this stage I had lost interest and didn't order anything else, my son had the brulee which was actually very good.<br/>I told the waitress about the fish, chicken and the fries but didn't seem to know what to do.<br/>When it was time to pay the manager seemed even less interested and only wanted my money, when I suggested some compensation was told they were not there to subsidise our meals but they are happy to serve burnt bland food! Well with an attitude like that I will never go back there.<br/>I would suggest diners take a look in the kitchen prior to sitting down for a meal, just see what ages the chefs might be and if it might reflect some experience or go to a restaurant that is owned by the chef they should be doing a better job because it is their own business.

great experience at Luna on the 14-05-2011. from when we went in the staff went the extra mile to smile and make us feel important. There was one table left and was reserved for an hour later so he checked with the chef then made sure we got our meals nice and quickly. had the t-bone steak, couldn't have asked for better value, we were running a bit late so they moved us so we could enjoy desert without rushing - amazing teremisu! and my partners brownie was to die for too.. oh and the best view in Dunedin. overall really impressed!!!

A group of seven of us dined at Luna last Friday evening for our Nana's birthday. They were reasonably busy due to graduation so we were seated upstairs. We had reserved a table and were waiting on two additional people when the waitress approached us to ask if we would like to order. We explained that we were still (obviously) waiting for two extra people. Even though we explained this, she continued to tell us the specials on the evening. (This was not repeated to the two extra people once they arrived so I had to tell them what the specials were myself.) We ordered our mains and about 20 minutes later we were told that "the kitchen had been smashed" (inundated with orders would have been more formal!) and that there would be another 30 minute wait on our food. We were asked if we would like some garlic bread while we waited. As we were all starving, we asked for two loaves. We then asked if these would be complimentary since it was not our fault that the kitchen had "been smashed." We were told that they were not complimentary, so we just ordered one loaf. The waitress then returned and informed us that we could have two and one would be free and one would be complimentary. We then waited another 20 minutes for the garlic bread of which we received 3 loaves, as there was obviously a misunderstanding. (We were later charged for two anyway!) Pretty much as soon as the garlic loaves came out, the mains came out and it didn't get much better. I had the gnocchi, which was bland and tasteless. My Dad's partner had the fettuccine, which was also dry and bland. The others had the steak and pork belly which they said were quite nice. When it came to paying, the nightmare became even worse, as the waitress was unable to work out how to divide the bill so that we could pay separately. In the end, we all ended up paying too much, and we even ending up paying for the previous customer's mains and drinks who were seated at our table before us! We got our money back for that (I think) but it was all such a mess, who knows what we ended up paying for! I would never go back to Luna for dinner as the service was crap, the food was bland, it was so overpriced, and the whole experience was awful!

The decor and view are fantastic!! You feel like you are walking into a 5-star restaurant. Frech fries and the smoked hoki taste awesome!! But the portion is a bit small.<br/><br/>After all why would i give a 2-star? Here is the story.<br/><br/>My wife ordered a mocha. She almost swallowed a fly that was in the foam. She spatted out. I called a waitress. The only response I got was "oh sorry, that's gross!!"<br/><br/>She made another mocha for my wife. That's it!! No further apology! No notification to the manager! And they still charged me for the mocha.<br/><br/>If this happened in somewhere like Pier 24. You would get at least a couple of apologies and some sorts of offers for compensation. Seriously I don't care about the $4.5. They just did not rekon that was a serious mistake that deserves attention. It is the attitude that I can not stand!!

My husband took me here for my birthday. We had a table with a view that was really nice. The meal was great - very nice food. Service was friendly. My only complaint was that we ordered two sides - the chips and the greens - only to discover that my husband's meal (the steak) came with exactly that, chips and the greens. It would have been nice if the waitress had pointed this out to us so we could have chosen different sides. Otherwise a very nice evening.

Our group of 9 recently dined at Luna. We had a table upstairs and the floor to ceiling windows make for amazing views over Dunedin city and harbour. The food was delicious - I had the venison which was tender. The pork belly was popular and divine. Portions were generous. Loved the Luna Loaf! The kids menu was excellent - thankfully no frozen chicken nuggets here! For dessert the hot soft centred chocolate pudding was the definite winner. Our waiter had a friendly and helpful personality and ensured we enjoyed our evening. Will definitely go back there!

Perhaps the first reviewer went in when it first opened. Lots of the "new restaurant" problems have been corrected and the food, staff and setting are now superb. The steak truly can be cut with a butter knife and the pate is probably the best in town. Some items maybe a bit expensive, but the quality is high, the taste is great and the staff makes you feel welcome. On a pretty day, the outdoor patios and balconies have probably the best view in Dunedin. Hope the first reviewer tries it again! (And no, I am not part of the restaurant ownership or staff. Just a neighbourhood person who enjoys the lovely walk to a casual, but nice restaurant.)

Dont where that last person went but they couldn't be more wrong!!!!! Service is great, food is great and price is very reasonable. The menu is greatly varied and I'd love to try something different everytime I go as it all sounds soooo yummy!!!
