Review Thai Hanoi Restaurant - Dunedin

Straw berry
Nice food & quite a few things to choose from. This time I got the honey lemon chicken & it was great! Probably not authentic but the chicken was nicely battered & a little crispy & came with a salad (of mainly lettuce), parsnip chips & jasmine rice. The wait time was surprisingly fast as well & there are heaps of vegetarian options!

Love their take away service online counter and payment machine. Just a shame there is no where to wait. Food is awesome and I often go when I'm in town.

Super yummy food, they give great portion sizes and make sure to include lots of prawns in the seafood dishes. It is a bit on the pricier side though, at around $27 just for the pad thai with prawns.

Great meal, a wee bit slow for food coming out, Huge mess up on the bill.... tried to charge me double. Was sorted by the owner.

Lovely food. I had fresh springs and they were delicious. I was looking fir a cilantro flavour but maybe that's not a Thai thing.

I liked their foods at reasonable price. However, some staff were not approachable and friendly (wearing sad faces).

First time coming here. Was a lovely meal. Will be going back

I visited lunchtime and prices were $13.9 per dish. There are all reasonable prices and I felt chicken phat thai was better than beef. We also ordered spicy noodles, it was our favorite dish. I think phat thai needs more vegetables..

Was recommended this place by a work mate and have to say this place had great ambience, great service from the waitress and food came out on time.
Doing a solo dinner I was impressed by the prompt seating and service from the waitress. (Top notch)
But the dish itself (beef noodles) honestly lacked flavour alot. The portion size were huge and I was happy about that but honestly I hate to admit it really lacked flavour. Felt I was forcing myself to chomp it down.
Thai Hanoi is the same chain as Thai land restaurant on George! Guess Iโ€™ll only need to try one of their pork spare ribs then ๐Ÿ˜œ the server was friendly and there was a spacious seating arrangement.
The ribs comes as a 4 piece nibbles dish, (I got 6 yay), and is your typical Thai seasoned rib-not too salty. These ribs were comparable to the Hutong ribs, but slightly better as they were more crunchy and was crisp upon each bite. The meat was mostly tough and dry but I feel like this is what they are meant to be. It is accompanied with some leafy green salad, soy sauce and sweet and sour sauce on the side. 3/5

A very friendly staff and a welcoming environment. The food proportion was excessive for two of us, however we both have a great appetite to consume the wholesome Thai green curry with abundant veggies. My partner generally loves wantons so it ended up in ordering an extra one of it ๐Ÿ˜Š

Great Thai and Vietnamese food, very friendly service, reasonable price! Good sized meals. We had the Vietnamese salad, Pad Thai, Massaman Curry and Homey Chicken- all excellent

Very friendly staff and welcoming environment. The wait wasnโ€™t that long and the prices arenโ€™t too bad. The meal portion size was really good. Enjoyed it!

As far as Thai food goes, I would put this as a pass. I have been here a couple times and only really ever ordered stirfries. I have not had any unpleasant experiences with regards to food. Staff however seemed slightly inattentive.

Such awesome prices here! I had the mango lasso which was really nice and not too sweet. For entree I had the satay chicken which had a really nice sauce which had nice crunchy peanut bits. For main i had the tom yum soup it was nice and had 11 prawns! Ive never been given so may before. The soup was just a little bit too spicy for me. The meals were good value for money and both of my dishes cme with some jasmine rice on the side

I like the coconut cream soup! It is rich in taste. Spare ribs is okay too. I just didn't like the spring rolls. The place is small and cozy. The staff are friendly.

Service A+
Food time A++
Food +++

There was a bit of a hiccup with tables. I went with my family and we wanted to sit on the elevated area at the back but at first we were told no. It looked like it was empty so I asked again and the waitress told me the tables are dirty and she said there would be a 10 minute wait on that. We replied saying that that was no problem. She was fine with that.

Moral of the story: communication is ๐Ÿ—

We're vegetarian and we don't eat egg so everything was vegan anyways. We got the cashew stir fry, pad Thai, Tom yum, chili stir fry and guri puffs. Everything was great but I preferred the stir fry's over the rest.

I definitely recommend to Thai Hanoi Restaurant to everyone!

We just arrived in Dunedin today from Auckland and decided to have thai again. Instead of dinning in we went for the takeaway option. When they said it will be ready in 15mins they were right Green curry and a red curry it was to die for, I would highly recommend going back again

Green curry with seafood was served with huge quantity of vegetables and seafood, but tasteless. Coconut milk soup was also tasteless. Luckily, the other two small dishes were nice. Friendly service.

Thai Hanoi is probably the most classy Thai restaurant in the Dunedin CBD. It is always hustlin and bustlin so try to make reservations if you can. The menu is rather extensive which is nice but everything is pretty expensive compared to your average Thai restaurant, in saying that you could tell everything was made fresh and the portions were rather large. I ordered the clay pot rice which ended up being glorified fried rice and for the price I was utterly disappointed. It lacked in the crispiness that you normally would get from a clay pot and I think it was just served in the claypot (not cooked in it like how I expected it to be). It was quite sweet because it was doused in sauce and made the rice quite gluggy which I wasn't too much of a fan of. My friend ordered a curry which he enjoyed however it was just a good standard Thai curry. Overall, not sure if I would return again because of how busy it is and because of the overpriced dinner meals.

Normally Thai Hanoi is great, I used to go there all the time, weekly even. I would always order similar dishes and today I ordered the same thing as usual but got a different meal. It would seem that either the menu and ingredients of meals have changed or the staff are not trained correctly. I was told to ensure I ask to not have certain things in my meal - but I never asked for them to be included in the first place so how am I know a staff member would add in extra things? Disappointed. The manager did say they would remake my meal but since the takeaway order already took 20 minutes I was not willing to wait.

Wow not only packed with diners for a Tuesday night but also packed with flavour - my meal that is!
Seated promptly, order taken within 5 minutes of arriving, 5/5 for starters.
My cider was worth $8 as in the size was great.
My entree was the combination: grilled chicken wings, pork spare ribs, guru puffs, spring rolls. Would feed 2 people comfortably and as I was dining alone tonight I had to ask for a doggy bag.
My main I asked to take out simply as the place was getting so full I felt terrible hogging a table for 4 plus it was extremely hot inside.
I ordered the Chicken Vietnamese salad. Wow! The best Vietnamese salad I've had in NZ. Chicken slices plentiful and tender. Veges sliced equally and an equal assortment of them also AND for a change the onions were not the same size of tomatoes or sliced so thick...!!! The delicate flavours all evenly balanced and not over powered with either hunks of red onion or what I've experienced in some Thai places in Auckland, 4 big tomatoes chopped in quarters to make the salad appear larger??
Perhaps I need to come back to Dunedin to taste more of its fare as first impressions is it seems prepared with love and pride rather than crowds and dollars.
Thank you for a lovely Thai meal!!! Defs come back here when back in town.

Last Saturday I called and ordered a takeaway vegetarian green curry with vegetables and tofu. When I walked in the restaurant smelt like they used a lot of fish sauce so I clarified with two front of staff that as I was vegetarian I would not eat anything with fish sauce in. The front of staff were very helpful and nice. They said that they think it did have fish sauce in but some vegetarians eat fish and that anything listed as vegan was definitely fish free (the definition of vegetarian is meat-free, fish is meat). One guy said he would ask the chef, who stated that it definitely had no fish sauce. When I got it home and opened it - it reeked of fish and my partner ate some and said it definitely tasted of fish. I think the chef just said it had none it to get rid of me.

I called and spoke to the front of house and told them what had happened and in his defence he did offer to try and fix it however I did not trust them and certainly did not want to eat food made there.

If you are vegetarian do not eat here. I wouldn't risk it! I do not think they understand or care about the vegetarian choice or how horrible it is to unwittingly eat meat.

Thai Hanoi is my favourite restaurant of all time. I sparked my obsession with Thai food and it still makes the best Thai food I've tasted, despite the fact I've tried many Thai restaurants since.ย

The staff and service are great. The restaurant used to be managed by a friendly American guy who had outstanding customer service at all times. It seems he has since left, however the existing staff are still really friendly and the service is great.

The best thing about this chain of Thai restaurants is the food. The food is phenomenal. I've tried just about everything on the menu and nothing disappoints.ย
My favourite dish is the Yum Neua which is your typical Thai Beef Salad which a huge hit of flavour. I live in Auckland now, and whenever I come back to Dunedin I have to get Yum Neua at least 2-4 times. That is not an exaggeration. I have never tried a Thai Beef Salad as delicious as the one from here.

The ambiance of the restaurant is really nice with lovely decor and nice music. You feel comfortable and warm when dining here.

The pricing of the food has gone up slightly since I first started frequenting this restaurant chain 8 years ago. It's about $20 for a main meal which is rather steep for Dunedin, but for the quality of the food, I'm okay with it.ย
Lunch is around $12.50 and is of a very decent size.ย

Overall, this is definitely my favourite restaurant chain and I'm just waiting for the day that they open one up in Auckland.

First time I had been here, a group of 8. Love the BYO option. my friends were happy with their meals, and I totally recommend the chicken peanut satay kebabs entree. Be prepared to have a lot of rice on your plate, however the sauce was plentiful to go with it. Staff were friendly and service was good.

I booked a BYO dinner here on Saturday evening and it was fantastic!! I had fond memories of dining here as a student so after two years of traveling it was the obvious choice for a mini reunion. I had booked for 10 instead of 16 (silly me!) but the waitress and manager in charge were incredible at accommodating the extra 6. Not easy to do on a Saturday evening I know. Further more they were wonderfuly flexible with letting us choose five meals for the table. I got to choose my old favourite - Yum Neua Beef - which was just as brilliant as I remember it. I want to thank the awesome staff! Highly recommended!

This Thai place is one of the worst that I have tried. We have ordered 3 curries and 1 stir fry, ALL disappointing. I wonder if they just mix the curry paste into some hot water and add some meats because red curry, green curry = taste the same. Massaman curry was a total MISSED! Will not come back here again.

Bought takeaways - sweet and sour stir fry was disappointing. The pork was chewy and obviously poor quality - I didn't finish it. For $18 definitely not good value. Surprisingly these guys don't know how to make a real sweet and sour. Cannot recommend. My partner had Panang Curry. Overall flavour was great. Chicken was not really tender and tasteless - again poor quality meat. For $18 also not good value. We will not eat here again

One of my favourite chains a year ago and Hanoi outlet was consistently the best. However, the restaurant and the chain as a whole has declined since. The cooking these days varies in quality, with chefs tending to load everything with soy sauce and coriander at the expense of more subtle ingredients. The service is also very mixed depending on who you get. This chain has a lot of promise, but needs to work on getting back to its former glory.

We love this Restaurant, for eat in and take away. There is one lady in particular that has the best customer service! She is friendly, well rehearsed in the menu and also has a cheeky laugh or joke with you. Always giving a friendly wink. We love you! Food is always tasty, although the portions are so big! Thanks Thai Hanoi!

Delicious food, always love Thai day Friday, lunches are huge though, I wish they would a smaller, cheaper meal.
Ian Patterson
"$10 lunches" appear to nowadays be $11.50.
I had chicken fried rice - good service and good food, but too much for me. (I wish they'd offer "small" versions, for $8 or $9).
Pleasant atmosphere and surroundings, but was rather noisy, being a busy lunchtime.

Great spot for lunch or dinner. Good service and a menu which is extensive and well informed. The food comes out well presented and is always thaidelicious. Always neat and tidy. The $10 lunch meals are always a treat.

Fantastic food and service. The meals have so much flavour the resturant is very clean and for $10 for lunch you couldn't do better. Will be back!

The food here is amazing!! Have only been here for lunch...but the menu was really reasonably priced...everything was $10. I would highly recommend the garlic stir-fry!
