Review Nellies Restaurant And Bar - Dunedin

Entree.... Although only 3 scallops the entree was a taste explosion. Delightfully described on the menu you couldn't help but order and I was not disappointed. Tastefully sprinkled with "bacon dust" it was all over too soon. Mains .....The chicken enchilada was a disappointment. A feature of an enchilada is the savory tomato sauce with chili, there was none of that... The meal tasted like dry chicken in pastry, nothing like an enchilada. Very off-putting. Ribeye steak with garlic butter with chips and salad. Presentation and flavour was lovely.

Quite pricey but food and drink was great. Plenty of park. Got told $20 cake surcharge if we bring our own cake. Too expensive. Recommended the food there.

Our Waitress was lovely and helped with some good food recommendations. The food was tasty. It was very busy so seemed like a popular place on a Tuesday evening. This did put the serving staff under pressure but they still were smiley and helpful.

This place is massive, has a fantastic restaurant menu but the bar menu is amazing too so you won't be disappointed if the restaurant is closed. We went on a Sunday night so restaurant was closed but bar menu included bangers and mash (pictured...apparently people dont like their mashed potato crumbed but it was devine!), steak meal, fish and chips, and schnitzel. Service was really good, friendly staff and the food came out really quickly. Has a really big garden area to sit, lots of big screens to watch the sports. Would definitely go back to try the restaurant menu.

Great service as soon as you sat down asked if you wanted a drink & asked again just as glasses were almost empty. Food was great & quick. Highly recommended

Been here twice in the past month, & both times have had the lovely Jess as our waitress. She's very personable, courteous & efficient. Our party, both times, just wanted her to be acknowledged. She's a star. The food is pretty flavoursome, & there's a good variety for both mains & desserts. The salad accompaning is yum. There's portion options for some mels which is handy. Only negative is that their prices are a little more than what you'd expect for what is essentially a pub meal.

Comfortable set up, great service, amazing food, reasonably priced and generous servings. Whole family loved their meals here.

Not a bad place, bit of a let down in regards to caramelized onions were on the menu but chef literally wouldn't make them for me. Good steak though, wait was a bit long, one of our table of 4 had to wait an extra 10 minutes despite all meals being pretty much the same. The wait staff though we're great and appreciated a bit of back and forth banter. Too wish I could give them a 5 star review, but the chef dropped the ball.

Didn't like what my salmon description on menu was, asked if I could have the what I wanted and NO problem really appreciated and enjoyed my meal. Don't be afraid to ask for what you like/ they will try and accommodate you

Saturday night for dinner for 10. Was busy but not full. 2 hrs after arriving and many rounds of drinks we got to order our meal. Last people in the place to get food. We finished and pushed out. Not happy with the time taken and food size has been cut down, again! We love you Mosgiel but COME ON. Was unimpressed once again.

Two couples and one seven year old tried Nellie's Bar and Grill on a Tuesday night just before seven. We thought the menu was somewhat overpriced but ordered a variety of meals the waited a LONG time for the food to arrive (forty minutes at least) when the restaurant only had a few patrons other than ourselves. One of us had the blue cod, served on a platter, and at $28 was a disappointment. The rest of the choices were pricey and mediocre at best. It is the second time we have been disappointed with the entire experience and do not plan to return. It used to be exceptional, with the old management team several years ago, but has slipped to a level that is not worth spending dining dollars there1

I came here about a week ago, i wish i could remember the date, and was very disappointed. the waitress seemed to rush us, hounding us soon after sitting to take our order then twice more before we were ready to order. They took sometime to bring out drinks, and just put them on table and walked off. The food was average. I won't be back in a hurry, if at all.

Unfortunately Nellies food has deteriorated a lot since I last went there several years ago. I went with two others today and we were all disappointed. We won't be going back

We dined at Nellies on the 17th December, a group of nine of us. We had barely sat down and relaxed and were being asked for our orders. I would not recommend getting the Chicken Country Salad, it was terrible. The lettuce was all soggy under the cooked veggies, there was hardly any chicken or bacon and it was definitely a LIGHT meal served in a bowl but had an outstanding price of $25. We were never asked at all how any of our meals were and in the end we did complain about the salad. We used to come at least three times a year, a group ranging from 9 to 15 but we will not be going back. I did contact Nellies the day later and got no reply.

Previously I have been to this restaurant every time I come to Dunedin and I have always maintained that the food would compare favorably to any five star restaurant elsewhere in the country with the food being fresh and using only the best ingredients and so on. Unfortunately I was quite disappointed this trip and I would describe the food as tasteless. We both ordered chicken stuffed with cranberry and brie, except there was very little brie and the ingredients used were clearly on the cheaper side. The salad consisted of a small handful of greens in a very small bowl. Again tasteless. We were told that we would get chips, but got a tasteless potato cake. The garlic bread previously was delicious, but they had even been stingy with the butter and garlic. The dessert was presented well as was the whole meal, but tasted of something factory bought. To top it off they were stingy with the wine. However, the meal was not cheap and the prices were on the high side. The decor also left a bit to be desired. Because we phoned up and booked we had the pleasure of being seated in a corner of the restaurant on something resembling garden furniture being sturdy and hard. After sitting for an hour or so on it I had a sore back. Moreover, my mother complained that the seats were low and she felt like she was eating with her chin on the table. Previously I had been happy to pay the high prices, but I will not be back and it is a shame as I had previously really enjoyed eating here.

My friend & I went to Nellies last week for lunch. I hadn't been in a few years so thought it would be a good change. Well alots changed.. food is good.. not enough... the salad? why does it have to be in another wee bowl on the plate? If you could call it a salad.. I find the size of the meals is ridiculous considering how much you have to pay ... Well they must be doing something right, got heaps of customers.

Service was good, food was good... just not enough.. :)
I will be back though am interested to try more of the yummy food

Had a business lunch with a colleague on a Monday which, understandably, is not their busiest day. I chose a dish described as beef & mushroom hotpot, which was a stew served in a vol-a-vent. Not the greatest stew, I didn't think. The steak was diced very small and was quite hard and tough. The creamy potatoes, carrots and broccoli were fine but the vol-a-vent was drowned by the stew and consequently very soggy. My colleague opted for blue cod & chips and said he enjoyed it although a bit on the scimpy side. The waiter was pleasant enough and the service was prompt.

Visited lunchtime today for their $12.50 Roast of the Day. Very well and originally presented, but actual quality disappointed me. The beef was stringy and tough, and parsnip (IS that what it was?) was wizened and tough like old boots. On the plus side I guess the carrots were cut in a cute way I've never seen, and the kumara and potato were ok!

I have been a regular here for the last 4 years or so. Recently since the menu and kitchen have been reworked I have been severely disappointed. The food has changed for the worse. I always get the chicken enchiladas with a variation to my liking. The new waitresses since the changes for the last 4 times I have visited have questioned my changes. It had never been a problem before! The salad that accompanies the meals has also changed. It used to be an enjoyable salad with a lovely dressing. Now it is a salad that does not suit everyone's tastes especially mine. The waitresses are also rude especially when they say my changes will incur extra charges every time I visit even though I am a regular and I know of the surcharges.

Overall the last 4 times I have eaten there since the kitchen and staff changes have been unsatisfactory and I have since stopped eating there. Disappointing as the chicken enchiladas used to be my favourite.

Have never been disappointed here. Excellent food, service and ambience make it the place we're most likely to frequent for special or casual dining out!

Great food, friendly staff and lots of choice on the menu. I'm a regular!

Food and service is always of a very high standard. Very family friendly and large portions mean pretty good value for money. Happy to tweak dishes to suit dietary requirements without any fuss.

The food here is delicious and is consistently great. Prices are not steep for such a huge portion and the waitresses are friendly and helpful.
I dined there last night in a group of 10 and all the mains came out together, there wasn't a long wait like you can sometimes get as a larger group.
Well done Nellies
