Review Ombrellos Kitchen And Bar - Dunedin

Great atmosphere mixing bar and restaurant. Good for (large) groups - would probably not go alone. The staff was super friendly and the food was delicious. I had the fish and chips. Well located between the city and the University.

Nice friendly Bar and Restaurant. Loved the space, great use of old cottages. The service was efficient and friendly, the chefs even waved. Food was great. I enjoyed the mushroom risotto with chicken added. My wine was nicely chilled and probably explained why I spent so much at Kilt afterwards. Overall the atmosphere and space really made for a great lunch.

This is a lovely place, an endangered species in a city where the humble bar and pub has been heading to extinction. Really great location and set up, perfect for summer and the food was very, very nice. I enjoyed their sharing platters and the drink selection was abundant and served well. The staff are amazing people. Love them to bits! I am disappointed by some 'Karen-esque' muttering about the food and service, none of which holds any true relationship to the excellent experience which is this bar that has been enjoyed by myself and my friends on so many occasions. Maybe such unfair and unfounded negativity is a reflection of Ombrellos' convenient location to the institutions surrounding the restaurant and the apparatchik/nomenklatura office party culture? 45 minutes to scoff a burger, fix a smile, do secret santa and the head home for three hours of Netflix, chips 'n dip? Pay them no heed! Come eat and dine at Ombrellos! Great place!

Very pleased with food selections! Had a huge delicious steak with side of slaw and kumara chips. Super yummy! There is a great collection of beers on tap and in the bottle. You choose ! They are nicely accommodating food allergies and offering several options. Desert was also yummy! I recommend to visit this place . You wont regret it !

I really enjoyed Ombrellos. I got the Ombrellos big breakfast (picture 1), which was very filling. It was well cooked and the sauce on the potatoes was a good choice- light and spicy, but not overpowering. The bread was very nice as well. The coffee was a bit cold when it came out, however, and a bit underwhelming and lacking in flavour, unfortunately. However, it was a nice experience overall. Kid friendly and nice staff.

Such a tasty meal. I had venison, husband had steak. Both meals cooked to perfection. Very pleasant service too.

Some friends and I stopped in for a drink and a snack. Despite the rain it was cozy and comfortable. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and they had some great Kiwi beers on tap. Snacks were tasty too. We all agreed that we would gladly return. Also they have a really pretty patio that we didn't get to enjoy.

Pre match drinks before the big game at the stadium. Was packed but kept everyone fed and watered very well. I didn't eat there but the food I saw coming around looked and smelt delicious. Will try and get back next time in Dunedin

Quick friendly service. Shout out to this wonderful staff (not sure what their name was if it was Lewis or Louis) anyway, they were so very lovely and went above and beyond with service, 10 stars

We took friends of ours out for dinner to Ombrellos as a treat and we weren't disappointed. It was a lovely evening the food was great. Our waiter was very friendly and even went an asked the chef how he did his turmeric cauliflower which were really yummy. Not that he gave away his secret. Thanks for making it such an enjoyable night.

A restaurant is popular usually due to either it’s food or it’s service staff. Ombrellos Kitchen & Bar has both! We ordered Spicy Beef Salad, Crumbled fish of the day, kids steak and chicken burger. All were awesome. The service staff were so welcoming of us and were very attentive to detail, offering a cushion for my mother-in-law who is in her late 70’s. I would recommend this restaurant any day. Simply lovely!

Great food and venue - wonderfully friendly staff - BUT it isn’t wheelchair friendly. My suggestion would be to invest in a portable wheelchair ramp - it would be a cheaper option than widening the door from the courtyard. Also, when people ask if it is wheelchair friendly ... be honest. I don’t think they were purposefully dishonest - but showed a lack of awareness of the need for dignity and ease for wheelchair bound patrons.

Great beer on tap - huge plus for me. Very good for large groups of people. The shared foods are typically very good. Polenta fries are great. Pork belly is a little dry but tasty, as is the chicken. Not too much to complain about here - good safe bet. The atmosphere can get quite loud though, so not an ideal spot for a romantic date.

Note: menu on zomato is outdated, check their website

Just had lunch here today. We ordered the pan fried halloumi, lamb fettuccine and the market fish with chorizo and olives.

The market fish was monkfish and it was cooked perfectly! The chorizo and tomato was a good match with it. The fried halloumi salad was also very good and came with kumara pumpkin potato and spinach. I feel the lamb fettuccine was quite bland but the amount of lamb given was very good for the price.

The service was super friendly and wasn't a long wait time :)

Truly beautiful food, friendly staff with relaxed service and good ambiance. Plenty of beers on tap too, allowing you to try something unique.

Went for the meat platter with my flat soda n whisky. Chicken arrived, think it was cooked a few days earlier. Service was good, deep fried everything basically. If i knew that i would have cooked at home

I've been twice to Ombrello's for brunch and have been relatively pleased. The first time I had a crumbed brill which was bland but the chips and tartare sauce made it slightly more worth it. The next time I had the smoked salmon and potato hash with capers (sooooo gooood!!!). If you love salmon and potatoes you would've loved this.

My friend got the French toast however the dough of her toast was still raw and gooey in the middle, but the rest of the cooked bits were tasty.

Will definitely return for brunch another time! This place is perfect for a cute date.

My husband and I have been to many restaurants in Dunedin and Ombrellos was superb! Our favourite so far and we will definitely be going back! The food was delicious, there were 9 of us and EVERYONE loved their meal, whether it was the lamb, pork, chicken, the risotto or steak... all the comments were positive :) The kids menu was also awesome - it was REAL food. Our children had the fish and the steak and demolished the lot. We can't forget the dessert, just heavenly. I highly recommend you try it for yourself :)

Great venue and excellent food for very cheap! Came in for the Wednesday pizza deal and were very happy. Pizzas came promptly, service was attentive and helpful, very good

Great food and a very nice atmosphere! Staff were attentive but not intrusive! Recommend for a group meal or small intimate lunch! Menu had lots of choice.

A group of six of us went for brunch on the weekend. The waitress was very nice and one of our party was late, so she apologised when she had to take our menus off us as they were short (??) We had to wait quite a while after our friend arrived for the menus to come back. The food was patchy. A friend ordered the steak sandwich which he had had previously and on that occasion he enjoyed it. Unfortunately this time his onion rings were hard and to demonstrate this he tapped them on the side of the plate and they made a very loud “ting”. The haloumi and the french toast were good and were much enjoyed. The breakfast burrito was unappealing visually and unfortunately not any better to eat. Avoid. The smoked salmon hash was good (hot smoked not cold smoked) but the poached egg was hard. The salt and pepper squid had separated from its crumb coating and had a strange taste (again this had been eaten before and was much better then). We were seated at a table by the kitchen and watched a group of young children continually enter and leave the kitchen which didn’t seem very safe or hygenic. We were outside (under a canopy near the bar) and a woman was smoking at a table next to us. She seemed to know the staff, I don’t know if this made a difference or not, but it seemed it should be classed as an inside area rather than outside. Really good setting though and staff were nice, just a shame about the food (and the smoking!!)

Outside courtyard is great, even in winter, but only if you are lucky enough to be seated near the outdoor fire. Brunch menu is not bad. Smoked salmon hash cake is very good and the poached eggs are cooked to perfection. Homemade baked beans are disappointing - too watery and overpowered by semi-cooked garlic. Pizzas are small and not very good, and one feels cheated even on half-price Wednesdays. Sole and chips is probably the best meal on the menu. Hand-pulled beer was a welcome change but it didn't last very long, which is disappointing.

Place is amazing. Great courtyard nothing like it in dunedin. We had the Haloumi salad and salt and pepper squid. Was the tastiest and affordable meals I have had in a long long time. Service was great. Friendly staff that know a lot about the wine\food menu and are extremely accommodating. 5 star restaurant and I must visit :)

Our first visit to Ombrellos and it was for Saturday breakfast. The location is not ideal - off the beaten track but great inside. There is inside and outside dinning and the area looks good for drinking and dinning. There were only two other customers on this Saturday morning but we had a very good breakfast and outstanding rostis.
Good coffee and good service and the brunch menu covers all tastes. This place is well worth a visit for brunch - due to its location it will be missed by many walkers but you won't be disappointed.

Love the courtyard with open fire, an amazing place to catch local music! The food is well presented and delicious, great selection of beers. Fantastic service and very sophisticated, friendly atmosphere.

A pleasant experience really. On the walk in it was a bit confusing as to whether we were supposed to order at the bar or wait to have our order taken.Furthermore, I thought the menu could have had a bit more choice. I eventually settled on the seafood chowder which was good. The courtyard was lovely made even nicer by the good weather that day. The staff were nice as well.

I have to agree with the last reviewer. This place is under new management. I think they changed hands in about Feb/March 2012. I've been there a few times since then and it's great. It's possibly a bit pricier than it needs to be, but the food is really good and so is the service. The hand cut chips are the BEST. They need to get a water filter though (it's Dunedin, after all).

I've never written one of these before but felt I had to: this restaurant has changed hands since the poor reviews that were written earlier. I went there for dinner a few weeks ago, and was impressed. My steak was cooked to perfection and the service was friendly and relaxed, yet professional. Some minor improvements could be made, such as filtered water (not tap). A larger selection on the menu might also be good, but quality is always more important than quantity. I would highly recommend people try out this NEW Ombrellos for themselves.

FOOD QUALITY: 2/5
PORTION SIZE: 1/5
SERVICE & AMBIENT: 3/5
VALUE FOR MONEY: 1/5
OVERALL: 1/5

Was there on a work lunch and my first disappointment was the limited menu. I ended ordering a beef burger since there was nothing else even remotely appealing to my taste (there was also Seafood Chowder and Roast Kumara Salad, maybe another 1 or 2 dishes).

Was not at all impressed with the burger. Meat just didn't taste well (am not a beef fan and had to make myself eat this), caramelised onions (I can't believe I'm about to say this) were the tastiest part of the burger, with the bun being ridiculously hard (I just ate the bottom half, didn't bother with the upper crust). I had a slight digestion disorder the following few days, this was the only out-of-the-ordinary meal I had that week so I don't know what was with that food.

The portion itself (valued at $18) was disappointing, just the burger (half of it being inedible) and some fries.

Staff was friendly though and the place looked neat.

Overall, it's a disastrous value for money, a somewhat typical Dunedin restaurant with 'fancy' overpriced food. I definitely won't go back.

I regularly visit ombrellos for work lunches, and am always really impressed with the smooth fast service and delicious food! Decided to try their dinner menu, recently went with a group to celebrate my friends birthday and could not have asked for a better experience, and I have to disagree with "Mike M" as I'm a seafood fanatic, I ordered the fish and it was a fresh flavoursome sole fillet finished with a tasty caper mayo. Would definitely give this place 5 stars!!!

Went there for a coffee during the afternoon and it was awesome; not only was the service really prompt, but the barista was pretty good too. Also super quite so a good place to relax after uni or something.

Went recently after a few years (previously loved the place) only to find the service and meals have gone downhill...

The staff were obviously students (students do need jobs) but they didn't care and seemed to be waiting for closing so that they could go out and meet friends, as it was a Saturday night.

The meal.. where do I start - I had the fish as a main which was undercooked in the middle (grey)and tasteless...

The chef must have a lack of confidence in his cooking as EVERY meal was soaked in Balsamic vinegar! I ordered the fish esp because the menu didn't mention any vinegar (whilst all other options did) yet, I was still subjected to the overpowering dressing. Only ate 1/3 of the meal..

Too be honest I was surprised when desert didn't have any balsamic vinegar.

Gutting that Dunedin has lost one of its local and finest (once) eating establishments.

We had our Christmas do at Ombrellos and it was great. They set the table up beautifully for us and the service was attentive and helpful. The platters we ordered were beautiful.

Went in there Tues food I got was boring & bland! No complements to the chef.Wouldn't give this place a 1/2 a star!

Booked this place for our xmas function went down and talked with the owner about what we wanted and when. When we called to confirm the booking and numers we were told we had cancelled the booking (we had not) and it had been booked by someone else and was no longer available. We told them they should cancel the other booking as it was their mistake and response was they were a bigger party than ours and regulars so in short NO! Will never go there and would discourage anyone else from doing so!

I recently had lunch at Ombrellos with a group of work mates and felt cross and hungry when I left. We had pre-ordered meals for about half our group, since some had to return to teach classes by 1pm. However for some inexplicable reason the meals that had been pre-ordered the earliest came the latest, some arriving 35 minutes after we had arrived - with no explanation.

I ordered the Seafood Chowder at $13.50 which was enticingly described as a medly of seafood and vegetables on the the menu. Well I've never had such an unsubstantial and miserly serving of seafood chowder anywhere before! There was a scant 250 ml of thin soup with a couple of tablespoons of fish and about a teaspoon of finely chopped celery as the vegetable bit. When I told the staff at the desk to pass on my comments to the chefs the woman said (airily) something like "oh yes I will pass on that - actually I'm the owner". And that's it. No apology or anything. Obviously she was not concerned about word of mouth reputation and marketing. I hope she reads this and is aware that I have passed on my experiences to everyone I know!!
