Review Formosa Delight - Dunedin

Irene Cheng
I went with a bunch of people to celebrate a friend's birthday one evening. The food was amazing and we got free bubble tea when we showed them or student IDs which was awesome too. The staff were so patient with our rowdy group and they stayed open for us past their closing hours because some of us arrived late. If any Formosa Delight staff are reading this right now, I'd just like to say thank-you again, from the bottom of my heart for making our night ♥️

Small cosy joint just next to the Library in Dunedin. Was pleasantly surprised that they had authentic ‘mala’ chilli to go with my chunk beef noodles. If you are around and miss having some Chinese food, head on down. Service was quick and the staff were efficient. Lots of parking around although I gather there is sometimes a crowd during lunch.

Great food and bubble tea to go with it. I've been visiting for years and find the quality to be really consistent. It's great to be able to go out and eat fresh, healthy food. The vegan dumplings are amazing. It would be nice to see more vegan desserts.

Delicious, flavourful food - consistent flavour and servings. Usually super fast service too. The owners grow a lot of the produce themselves. Indoors can feel a little cramped when busy, but nice outdoor seating. Good vegan/vegetarian options - recommend trying it out!

Pretty authentic Taiwanese food (according to my friend from Taiwan). They have heaps of vegan/vegetarian option. The reason why I rated this 4 star instead of 5 is because of the price/portion size. The medium portion felt it was like ultra small and the larger ones felt it was medium sized. It would be great if they can bump up their portion size. In terms of flavour and the taste , it is there. I have no complains about that , just that the price/portion size ratio could be improved

Food is extraordinarily tasty with all the organic ingredients. Boss lady is very kind, almost too nice

This quite a good place, on of the too few where you can eat outside on the sunny terrace in summer. Food is good, with the huge focus on healthy product but all the options are a bit the same and taste the same (cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage is the same side for everything). Price are more on the high range for a lunch. Inside the place is way too small, overpacked and a bit cold.

This is a lovely little restaurant inside the campus area. The staff there are very nice and friendly. I had an organic feijoa smoothie. It tastes very delicious. I will definitely go back and try other things as well. I am super happy with the service. Highly recommended for those smoothie lovers!

The place is clean and inviting with a large outdoor deck. The menu offers a variety of Chinese and Taiwanese dishes though the curries don't exactly taste like the typical Oriental curry and resemble rather Indian curry. The pork mince with stewed egg rice meal is a perfect comfort dish and the egg tarts are great too considering that there aren't many establishments offering the same kind of food.

Food is simple and close to original. No MSG, organic or home grown when possible: simple concept executed well.

A really nice little place in campus. I like all kind of the noodle soups , my favorite rice dish is the chunky beef. Also a good place for afternoon tea, they make really nice espresso coffee with organic beans. And I have tried their peppermint tea , I am so surprised that the tea is made with homemade peppermint leaves! So does the lemon verbena tea! They are the only cafe in town I have ever been to they dry their own tea! You must try! Highly recommended!

The food at Formosa Delight is so tasty and fresh and delicious I couldn't pick a favourite dish. Kale parcels maybe, or the summer noodle salad, or dumplings - YUM! I am so grateful that it's by my work. And the owners are lovely. The best :)

Had the chocolate and black lemon bubble teas with Eden curry delight, beef dumplings. All so tasty and left feeling satisfied but not stuffed and gross like some meals can leave you (ahem KFC).

lovely service and super good vegan dumplings! plus they offer free bubble tea for students if you spend $14 or more, which can also be made vegan :)

Been coming here for 5+ years always amazing food + lovely staff (summer noodle salad, dumpings and chive crepes are top tier)

"Delight" is a very apt name for this cute wee spot. I am never disappointed by my Formosa experience! The summer noodles once again filled me to the brim with happy peanutty-crisp-veges-and-noodles delight - see there's that word again! Be prepared to be squished in, it's a tiny wee place, but there are also outdoor options, which is again, delightful, on a warm day. Service is friendly and fast, even when busy you don't have to wait long. All in all, Formosa is a delight.

Nice little place with excellent and fairly priced Taiwanese food.

Been wanting to try this place out for ages! I like the idea of a vegan cafe, and their menu was interesting. What made me really want to come was the free boba drink included in the dinner meal!
I ordered garlic chive parcel, spicy mapo tofu and the taro milk bubble tea.
The garlic chive parcels definitely should be eaten whilst warm. I ate them as my finishing meal but I wish I hadn’t. Nevertheless, they were tasty enough, nicely pan fried outside with a vermicelli and beef filling. The sauce was a good accompaniment and gave the parcel a lot more flavor and worked well. Tasty but nothing amazing. 3/5
The spicy mapo tofu was served with rice and a decent portion, could’ve done with a bit more tofu but I was content. The flavor was mild, definitely not at all spicy, but I was glad as I didn’t really want anything too extreme tonight. The sauce was a good thickness and not soupy which I appreciated. The flavor went well with the rice. The cauliflower was a bit tough and I wasn’t really a fan, it it was in smaller bits I think that would’ve worked better for the dish. 3.5/5
The taro milk tea was delicious, definitely comparable to chatime although I think the portion is a wee bit smaller in comparison. The boba were chewy but not tough like in some boba, and there were taro bits in the milk which were a delight. The taro taste itself was not very strong and I could only really taste a generic sweetness which was the only drawback. Nevertheless I liked the drink. 3.8/5
Overall, the meal was good, I just wasn’t particularly blown away by anything, but I did enjoy and it was a good time. The price is also pretty good too, so no major complaints. Cute ambience, really clean furnishing. i also really like their little cabinet and the cabinet desserts looked really good, a wee little range of cakes and slices, some vegan friendly. Keen to try those next!
Absolutely delicious! Would definitely recommend! Nice and warm inside, friendly staff, food was fresh and flavoursome and delicious. Vego food is good but not sure about meat options

Nice and small place with variety of menus. Lamb dish was really good, however it was a little too dry for my liking. There was good variety of vegetables and good portion of rice to go with it.

My go to place for healthy and good quality Asian food. I've been frequenting this place for a good many years now,it being so close to the University.
They serve a wide range of yummy delights, with gluten free and vegan options available.
My favourites have always been the chive crepes with the family's locally grown salad, the vege rolls with beef or chicken, the stewed pork belly noodle soup, homemade dumplings, all topped with a good dose of hot chilli sauce.
It can get quite crowded around the lunch hour and popular amongst students and lecturers alike.
Formosa Delight is owned and run by a sweet Taiwanese couple that grow all their own vegetables so the salads are always amazingly fresh and crunchy. The service is good and you'll always get a smile.
Prices are good too.

Living close to this restaurant I decided I would give it a shot. I was expecting really tasty fresh food and sadly this did not happen. I got the chicken noodle soup and i was hugely disappointed. For over $12 the soup was tasteless and the chicken was more skin and fat than actual chicken.
Definitely wont be going back.

I've been various times in the past couple of years. The food is delicious, fresh, and tasty! It's consistently good too. They have a great range of vegetarian food, on top of having yummy meat dishes. The kale pockets are my absolute favourite, as are the dumplings. I also really love the bubble tea.

I love this place so much! beautiful food, and consistently excellent coffee. We ate here for the first time last night and were so happy to have such a wide range of vegan choices (= I recommend the chive crepe vege rolls, so delish! ohh and the dumplings.. and the vegan noodle soup!

This is my favourite place for lunch in Dunedin. The food is really good and unique, made from scratch with fresh ingredients. Their dumplings (for example) are exceptional, very different to what you get in any other Asian restaurant in Dunedin (where it all tastes the same, probably bought frozen). You get a very good meal for a reasonable price. The staff are really nice too.

Excellent value for money and I appreciate that the owners try to offer organic food, they even grow their vegetables. Taiwanese food served is really good but they should purpose more options because there is not much choice.
