Review Poppa's Pizzeria - Dunedin

Alexandra Hawkhead
My dad used to rave about poppa’s pizza when we were growing up (as our family had moved away from Dunedin) but I was pleasantly surprised to return to it 20+ years later and find that they still make absolutely bomb pizzas. So delicious. Thank you for living up to 20+ years of personal hype 😂 The poppa’s special is especially great and so is the Parmesan covered garlic bread. We bought a pepperoni to reheat in the oven the next day which was also really good. Thank you!!

Delicious pizza, location is handy, decorations are on point and they embrace their role as the best scarfie pizza place. Have gone many times and they have never disappointed :)

Pippa's Pizza has been around since 1975. It was therefore around when I went to Otago University in 1977, but I have absolutely no memory of it. This is probably because I am of Scottish heritage and therefore avoided paying for anything as a student. Well, here we are in 2023, and we tried Poppa's on a wet Easter night. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The menu is interesting - I would call the pizza style "regional", by which I mean that it seems to be rather specific to Albany Street, but probably not to Italian pizza style. Having said that, it filled up the two students we had on hand, so that is saying something. You can even get a beer or wine there too - students these days are clearly more sophisticated than I ever was! So, overall, good solid food. Will fill you up, pleasant atmosphere, reasonable (if not cheap) prices, and great for a get-together between bouts of biochemistry or business studies at the information centre across the street. Just don't take your native Italian therefore a traditional pizza...

Love the pizza, the cheesy garlic bread is amazing, and the whole atmosphere is relaxed and cool!

Great little pizza place. Brilliant pizzas, some of the best in town and very reasonable. Small, basic seating but really good and an amazing selection.

Best pizza in Dunedin….maybe even all of NZ. Yes a bit more expensive than say Domino’s…but you get quality toppings.

Pretty good pizza and cost effective. Cheap drinks too. Nice windows which open to the north [ish]. Went there after an event at Forsyth Barr and it was one of the only open places.

Excellent and efficient service! Best 🍕 slices around especially at 10pm when you're a postgrade student trying to get ready-made food on the go.

Decently priced pizzas, definitely won't break the bank, but also won't be considered cheap compared to Pizza hut and Domino's. Selection is plenty and they're all well cooked not sure what kind of oven but very smokey in taste which is nice, though be wary of smelling a bit smokey should you stay a while or even tearing up.

Had fabulous Poppa's Special today...first time in about 25 years...and still the best pizza ever. Lovely light bases, and terrific toppings.

What a fantastic customer service! I mocked them up for hours and they still were nice with me. Great pizza and a fantastic service. As a first time client with Poppa's Pizza i will definitely put more orders through if they are in Hamilton or look for them when away. Thank you! 👍👍👍

Poppas Pizza is a staple in the Dunedin community. It's located opposite the University and lives up to its name by specialising in nothing but Pizza. Ironically, it appears this restaurant has priced itself out of the Student market.

I like the ambience of Poppas. It's flooded with O' week posters from as far back as the 1980s and perhaps earlier. It's entertaining to simply look around the restaurant at the history whilst your Pizzas cooking.

I went here in a quiet week night and our 3 pizzas took about 15 minutes. Not bad.
I chose one of the pizzas with heavy meat topping and it had good flavour and filled me right up. There was enough sauce on the pizza and the base had the right balance of not being too doughy or overly crispy.

Overall though there's not much more to say expect 'the pizza is good'. There's no other X Factor here. The posters in the restaurant are funky but won't be enough to make a students pay $20 for one pizza.

Enjoyed pizza here as it was cheesy and full of flavour. The service was great and the atmosphere was lively. Very conveniently across the university and the prices aren’t too bad either.

The pizza was really bad, totally different from few years back. Tasteless cheese, topping not so fresh. Taste just like the frozen ones you get from the supermarket. Not worth the money.

Poppa's Pizza is a Dunedin institution. The BEST pizza in Dunedin, I dined here when I was a student now my kids eat here- how awesome is that!. Cant beat the lunch deals, and even though my student days are far beyond me, I still drop in for old times sake. Prices maybe higher than the likes of Pizza Hutt Dominoes etc, but you get "real ingredients, not plastic tasting" substitutes on the pizzas.

The pizzas at Poppa's are far better than the cr*p you get at Pizza Hutt, Dominos, Hells etc, but are much more expensive. But if you're prepared to pay the extra cost then it's well worth it.

Can sometimes be hard to get a table.

Best pizza in Dunedin, as far as I'm concerned. The gluten-free bases available are really nice and the toppings on the pizzas are generous and so tasty. They offer simple combinations but trust me, they work well. It doesn't take too long at all to get your pizza - the size and quality are worth every cent you pay for.

Definitely the best tasting pizzas in town in a lovely (but small) restaurant. I went here once in 2005 and the pizza was absolutely terrible, but I went there recently and enjoyed a very nice cheese and tomato pizza. The only negative point about this business... No plates!! You have to eat off of napkins. I will take my own plastic plates there next time, LOL. Overall, a very good restaurant.

Lovely place, lovely atmosphere and lovely food. I would recommend this pizza place to everyone for their terrific service and pizza of the highest quality. I have been back to Poppa's Pizza several times and not once have I been disappointed. The only complaint I can make about this place is the sky-rocketing prices (though the quality of the food makes up for it) and the cramped environment.
